A Body Apart with artist Amie Pascal

A Body Apart with artist Amie Pascal

Surrealist artist Amie Pascal brings a queer lens to portraying and challenging representations of the body, blurring lines between reality and imagination while juxtaposing abject body horror with beauty. Her work expresses a universal rawness from a queer woman’s disabled embodiment in her new series ‘A Body Apart.’

Some of the things we discussed

  • 00:10:11 - How the pandemic and long COVID changed her art
  • 00:18:21 - The use of vintage anatomical illustrations as reference material and the reclamation of marginalized bodies
  • 00:20:56 - Inspiration from filmmakers and women surrealists
  • 00:27:03 - The "real world" as a liminal and surreal space
  • 00:33:07 - Music pairings for each painting

Portrait of a SURVEY on Fire

Portrait of a SURVEY on Fire

Who makes up Portrait Nation? Where do we live? Why did this movie resonate with us and in what ways? How has it affected our lives? Baby Djojonegoro, Heather Petrocelli, and Amie Pascal have put together what they hope will be a far-reaching survey of the Portrait community in order to let the entertainment industry, other institutions and decision-makers, and the rest of the world know we exist and that we have voices and opinions that matter. Listen in on our conversation with Baby and Heather, and then please join us in filling out the survey, and help spread the word to others!

Bad Portrait Fan Art Interview!

Bad Portrait Fan Art Interview!

One of the things we've loved most about Portrait of a Lady on Fire as a phenomenon has been the fan art, and some of the most delightful fan art has come from Teryn, a.k.a. @badportraitfanart who, in their own words, has "never liked visual arts" and yet has made over 100 artworks to date, 99 of which are scenes from Portrait and are now available as a book. On top of that, they've donated all of the profits from their sales to queer non-profits, including the most recent, Lavender Library. Listen to find out more about how Portrait has impacted their life and why they are not a hot dog.

SEASON ONE FINALE! Women Who Love Women Really Love Women: the Future of Queer Media

For the last episode of the season, we asked for your ideas about what queer media should be now that we're living in a post-Portrait world, and, in true Portrait Nation style, you answered very thoughtfully and generously. So, here's nearly an hour's worth of things we want more of (as well as some things we'd like less of) and a bunch of FANTASTIC new story ideas. Thank you all very much for sharing these with us and, as always, thanks for listening. We'll be back soon! À bientôt!
