De Eik: Supporting internationals and their families after a cancer diagnosis

Unfortunately, these days it is unlikely to meet someone who has never been affected by cancer in some way. Whether being diagnosed themselves or knowing a loved one who was diagnosed. "De eik", a centre for living with and after cancer, focuses on providing peer support to the person and their family affected by cancer.

We explore this topic further with Jacqueline Selbeck- coordinator of de eik and Ineke Coremans- Volunteer and Host of the meetup group for internationals.

Peter Kentie in Ralu on Board, Ed. 9.1: Would you dare to make your brand "open source"? Eindhoven did!

Ralu on Board, Edition 9: What is your brand? What is the brand of your organisation? Does a city or a country have a brand? And how should you safeguard the identity of that brand and the logo? Actually, in this first episode of the full interview, Peter Kentie reveals how initially it was highly controversial when he proposed to make the city logo available as open source.

In this episode and in the upcoming two epsiodes, Ralu Nistor Lustermans hosts an astonishing, or shall we say #estonishing, creative and open-minded person; someone who was at the heart of creating an impactful brand. He was most busy with the Eindhoven brand the last plus 12 years.

Peter Kentie, Director of Eindhoven365, joins us in Ralu on Board, to share his inspiring and insightful story on how the Eindhoven brand was built in the last 12 years. He also shares the #estonishing story of building a pro-bono brand for Estonia, as a country/nation, and his contribution to the newly launched the Netherland brand. In fact, a re-branding of the nation from “Holland” to “The Netherland! Inspiring stories, and food for thought on where to start if you want to build a brand and how to make make it impactful.

We left the interview with lots of food for thought, as Peter’s stories are very insightful. As an example, we heard "think of your job like a project". What do you want to achieve from doing it? Also Peter’s views is that for the future work place we shall not focus on developing skills: but on curiosity and on an open mindset.

Join us in listening to Edition 9 of Ralu on Board, in conversation with Peter Kentie, about the importance of purposeful branding and marketing.

How to explain Dutch Carnaval to internationals?

How to explain Dutch Carnaval to internationals?

Salaai! Welcome to Lampegat! Every year during Carnaval, Eindhoven changes its name to Lampegat, the hamlet of the lamps. Festivities take place all over the Southern part of the Netherlands, but with differences between cities and regions. In Eindhoven it started as a catholic tradition to kick of the period of Lent, six weeks before Easter. It puts hierarchy in society upside down: everyone can dress up to assume any role, be it the major, fairy queen, a musketeer, rock star, football hero, whatever. To internationals, Carnaval often is a culture shock. The smartest city suddenly becomes “de gekste”, the craziest, the wildest. As an ex-stadsprins, Joep Verheijen had the experience of leading the town into threes days full of cultural events, a parade, but maybe most of all the vibrant nights in the many pubs and out in the street. Parag Gupta, of indian ethnicity but born and raised in the U.S., believed that he got into some kind of New Orleans Mardi Grass when he experienced Carnaval. Geisa Barra Cordeiro knows Carnaval in her home country Brazil, but she now lives in Den Bosch which hosts a very traditional Brabant-style Carnaval. On Radio 4 Brainport, Jean-Paul Linnartz kicks of a cross-cultural Vodcast. Many thanks to Olaf Koenen en Mike Weerts for the support from Studio 040. Recorded January 26, 2024 in the Eindhoven Parktheater.

Lampegat for Internationals, Carnaval in Eindhoven

February 3rd, “Lampegat” will announce its new prince.  Eindhoven, the city of light will be emersed in a vibrantCarnaval, just one week later. Joep Verheijen had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of being stadprins in 2007. For many internationals it is a weird experience to see the city go wild, young and old dressed up and joining in the festivities. But what are the cultural roots, and what is it beyond just drinking lots of beer? He will give a longer interview about the ins and outs of Carnaval. Join Jean-Paul Linnartz at Radio 4 Brainport for brief preview.

When temperatures drop in the Netherlands

The second week of 2024, we see a drop of temperatures in the Netherlands. To all the Dutch this brings back memories of cold winters with lots of skating outdoors. Pretty dangerous if you try skating on the thin ice now, unless the skate track is artificially  created by pouring water on a parking lot. But anyhow, for Radio 4 Brainport a reason to replay a program from a couple of years ago.

Ralu on Board, Edition 7: Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem, bridgebuilder between Eindhoven communities and cultures

Ralu on Board, Edition 7: Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem, bridgebuilder between Eindhoven communities and cultures

RaluonBoard gives a stage to leaders to share their stories and inspire others. On our next special edition we have an incredibly inspiring leader on board! Already a decade ago he was named "the politician of the year" by the Dutch parliamentary press. He is known as a "bridgebuilder" who does not shy away from talking about the "pink elephant". He is a proud Eindhovenaar, who embraces and supports the diversity of the Brainport area and made it his mission to ensure that the growth of Eindhoven does not make us fall apart. When John Jorritsma came into office with a statement that "Eindhoven is a collection of villages". Jeroen Dijsselbloem also talks about Eindhoven as a collection of nationalities and sees it as his task to integrate these better.

The skill to bring together many national financial interests in Europe is a skill that now helps to bring together the local interests and solve the challenges of cities and villages in the region.

Will Brainport continue to grow? what if the economy cools down? Jeroen Dijsselbloem sees it as his responsibility not only to consider the growth scenarios but also oversee the risks of not so gloomy scenarios, including economic down turn. His ambition is to serve at least two terms of six years each, which require also long term strategies. As an ex-minister of finance, he openly critizes political parties that do not produce a solid financial a plan to back up their promises to the voter.

Jeroen Dijsselbloem takes strong positions. The migration crisis is just not the hardest issues of the moment. According to the mayor it rather is a consequence of a housing crisis.

Ralu on board, Ed 6: The power of weak and strong connections to become successful - an insightful conversation with Bert-Jan Woertman

Did you know that to be successful you need to build “weak” and ”strong” connections and relationships, as both are equally important to develop and progress in life? In Ralu on Board, Edition 6, I have the pleasure to be in conversation with a very well-known connector, elevator, and promoter from the Brainport area.
He has been involved in the development of the smarter square kilometer in Europe, the High Tech Campus, and in this podcast, you will hear about the importance of creating environments where people can collaborate and connect in many different ways.
The conversation gives many insights into what does it takes to build trust, challenge the system when it does not give the results you want, to build a new system more appropriate, and how can you do that? I more collaboration and more building trust the answer to our current problems.
Bert-Jan Woertman, definitely thinks that we need to surround ourselves with people who can challenge us in the right way and help us ask the right questions, before we can finds the adequate answers.

Jamboree on the Air: Shortwave radio retains its magic for Meerhoven scouts

Scouting Burgemeester Welschen Meerhoven (SBWM) in Eindhoven will again participate in the annual JOTA-JOTI, the Jamboree on the Air and Jamboree on the Internet. This event will take place from Friday 20 October 8:00 PM to Sunday 23 October 2023, 1:00 PM. Since its founding in 2003, SBWM has participated in the JOTA. This year they celebrate the 20th anniversary. An FM transmitter will be active all weekend, so the Meerhoven area can listen on a portable or car radio. Programs are on air on 103.3 MHz in the FM band. Rob Hardenberg explains the set up and the plans for 2023 and gives an impression of previous JOTA's.

The JOTA – JOTI is the largest global scouting event in which 2 million scout members from 174 countries participate annually. The purpose of JOTA – JOTI is to get in touch with other scouts. Here ideas are exchanged but also communicated with friends. The exchange of ideas is known in the world of scouting as Jamboree. Communication traditionally takes place via radio, but for several decades now also via the Internet. JOTA is an abbreviation and stands for Jamboree on the Radio and was first held in 1957. To be able to talk to each other, the help of licensed radio amateurs is called in who have a license to use some frequency bands and can therefore communicate worldwide using of transmitters and antennas. In addition to the JOTA, the JOTI was organized for the first time in 1995. JOTI stands for Jamboree on the Internet and has since been held together with the JOTA as JOTA– JOTI. During a JOTI, communication takes place via the internet, for example through chatting or online video conference.

LoLiPoP-IoT: Prolonging battery life for sensor systems to use scarce resources more efficiently.

LoLiPoP-IoT: Prolonging battery life for sensor systems to use scarce resources more efficiently.

To save energy and to efficiently use resources, we often need to monitor and to sense, we need to communicate and to process data. To make this possible the Internet of Things promises the realisation of dense sensor networks. But sensors consume energy and cannot always be wired for power. In the EU project LoLiPoP-IoT, 38 partners from across Europe develop Energy Harvesting and micro-power management solutions for Wireless IoT edge devices that enable long battery life sensors to be retrofitted on, in or near equipment and infrastructure. Wireless sensors are the key technology platform to enable us to collect data that will be used for anomaly detection, efficiency and performance monitoring. LoLiPoP IoT creates an ecosystem of developers, integrators and users to develop these platforms thinking about power/battery life, ease of installation and maintenance. The project is driven by 12 laboratory- and field-based use cases to initially demonstrate their technical viability and then potential impact.

Jean-Paul Linnartz interviewed Mike Hayes of Tyndall, one of the main thought leaders in this EU project.

Silvia Lenaerts, Rector TU Eindhoven: creating value requires a close connection to the real world

Silvia Lenaerts, Rector TU Eindhoven: creating value requires a close connection to the real world

She was responsible for valorization at the University of Antwerp. She came to TU Eindhoven, world leading in industry-academic valorisation. Her research is Sustainable Energy, Air and Water Technology, while energy, the environment and sustainability are key innovation areas to TU/e. Now, as the new rector of TU/e, Silvia Lenaerts puts forward "valorization" as the main theme for the Opening of the Academic Year 2023.

Yet, valorization for her is broader than a commercial transfer. Silvia Lenaerts wants to orient TU more towards society. Dissemination requires us to stay connected to the real world. Getting input from outside in. Reaching out to a broader audience. For that, TU needs "Cognitive diversity" from a broad range of disciplines. Academics do not only educate and not only do research, but also need to work on valarization, and that can be in many different forms.

ASML CEO Peter Wennink calls for a better vision on global challenges to stay relevant

ASML CEO Peter Wennink calls for a better vision on global challenges to stay relevant

"Huge global transitions are ongoing". Peter Wennink sees the global issues as big challenges, but not only as a isolated problems to be solved. The value generation opportunities from these shifts and changes are huge. The US and East Asia are positioning themselves as new leaders in a new world order, with visions on how to dominate in automotive, in technology for the energy transition, in digitization. Will Europe still have a role? Will we stay relevant? Will the Netherlands be able to safeguard welfare if we may loose our negotiation position in a global economy?

ASML says it wants to take co-responsibility in creating a safe environment for employees and other citizens, including access to affordable housing, faster international hiring, good infrastructure. To Jean-Paul Linnartz on Radio 4 Brainport that sounded like the early days of Philips taking care of the entire life of employees, but Peter Wennink does not want be paternalistic. He makes a plea for a grant vision, with collaboration among industry, academia and the government.

Also, global crises need a system vision, and strong cooperations, not point solutions. Starting a lab at the university is an example to setting up collaborations. Yet, proprietary knowledge is highly critical to keeps ASML's leading role. Can open innovation work for ASML? Or, is it a must in a global race to pre-sort as a leader rather than becoming irrelevant?

"I collect colours". But Stella Verdult goes beyond that: she shares her passion for colours. She gives a meaning to colour. A new exhibition runs in Albert van Abbehuis: "A conversation starter" is a suggestive and heedful approach in which the diversity of colour is made visible.

Wilfried Gradus at STE Languages: Understand the culture? interact socially? Learn Dutch

What does it take to get in touch with the Dutch culture or to interact socially? Learning the language can make a big difference. 25 years ago Philips had its own "talen afdeling", and that langaugae department has been split off as STE Languages. Wilfried Gradus is a director at STE. Jean-Paul Linnartz interviewed him. How steep is the learning curve to learn Dutch?

Mathilde Lageman, director STE Languages: Many ways to learn Dutch. It is not one-size-fits-all.

Learning Dutch? Language courses are not a one-size-fits-all. Learning for your Dutch inburgerings-examen may not teach you the Dutch that is most effective in your job. Some people like to quickly engage in a convesation, other like to understand the grammer of the language before they feel comfortable. We interviewed Mathilde Lageman, director at STE languages, Eindhoven.

Ralu on Board: The most influential leaders are not always highest in hierarchy

Ralu on Board: The most influential leaders are not always highest in hierarchy

Ralu Nistor-Lustermans reflects on the IIA Global conference 2023 in Amsterdam. One take away was that the most influential leaders are not necessarily in the board room. Employees in lower ranks often have strong leading impact. Often these defacto leaders underestimate the ripple effect that they have.

Do you have the courage to lead with empathy and purpose? Dr. Kamel Hothi spoke about the power of defining your purpose, finding your allies, mentors and supporters, the courage to be vulnerable and the wisdom to be empathic. I dare to say that many of us in that packed room had a tear or two as Dr Kamel Hothi OBE shared her very personal leadership story packed with many moments of vulnerability and immense courage! We need more leaders who have the courage to lead with a clear purpose, be vulnerable and empathic!

The question to all internal auditors out there is: what’s your purpose?

Vlad Niculescu-Dinca: You can explain "hypothesis testing" to a four year old

Vlad Niculescu-Dinca: You can explain "hypothesis testing" to a four year old

Getting kids enthusiastic for science and technology is a challenge. Are physics and math boring? How can you make it exciting? At the Eindhoven Roumanian school, Vlad Niculescu-Dinca goes a step further: bringing a scientific mindset to young kids is not so hard as it may seem. Kids can understand what hypothesis testing is. Just let them find out whether some assumption is crazy or in fact is true.

As the Brainport region is asking schools and universities to make a scale jump on educating engineers, Jean-Paul Linnartz interviewed Vlad about his experience in making science attractive and in promoting a curious and investigative mindset.

Una Paloma Blanca is a language "hub" in Eindhoven

Learning the local language also means being emersed in Dutch culture and in Dutch habits. Una Paloma Blanca had a grand opening of their new facilities at the NRE Area on May 11, 2023. Antonio Gutiérrez Rubio explains how for instance Dutch course uses real examples of experiencing the Netherlands, including learning how to ride the bike and the need to protect your bike from it getting stolen. But UPB teaches many languages, we may even call it a language hub.
