Dominic “Nerd” McDonald is a young Black Entrepreneur and Spoken Word artist from various cities in Los Angeles, California but currently living in the Southeast sector of Washington D.C. giving him the self-proclaimed name of the "Bi-Coastal Poetry Playboy". He has put his views on growing up in the inner city between two households, Hip Hop music, being a social outcast, college experiences, and more on paper and created everything from screen plays to magazine articles. His passion comes from serving the community, especially through the arts. By writing from his heart and what he sees and hears, he hopes to be a “change agent” to the unheard. He plans to travel spreading his creativity and influence to those who may receive his messages as well as manage and mentor others who decide to walk the same path. He was the winning Finalist of the 2022 D.C. Poet Project sponsored by Day Eight Publishing and hosts his own open mic called "Refresh Open Mic" here in the District.

Brandon Douglas, a product of the land known as Washington, DC, began writing raps when he was 12. He later fused poetry and hip-hop to form his secret weapon as a tool of self-expression. Since then, he has opened for Maxwell and the late Gil Scott Heron, and graced stages at the Woolly Mammoth Theater, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Atlas Performing Arts Center, the Phillips Collection, and Howard Theatre. With his artistry, he works to guide others toward positivity, encouraging them to strive to be whole. He is constantly working to grow as an artist as well as a person so that others may be moved to do the same.

In our closing episode of #PrideMonth - Our host Dwayne Lawson-Brown is joined by Arlington County Youth Poet Laureate, Amasa Maleski!

Amasa Maleski is a writer, musician, and filmmaker attending high school in Arlington, VA. Their first spoken word performance was at an open mic for their middle school; since then, they have returned to this school to lead poetry workshops. In 2019, they qualified at the countywide level for the Optimist International Oratorical contest. They are an alumna of the University of Virginia’s Young Writers’ Workshop, and their poetry was recognized at the regional level of the 2021 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Currently, they are serving as Arlington’s Youth Poet Laureate of 2021. They was also a member of the 2020 DC Youth Slam Team.

Dwayne and Amasa discuss identity, the joy of the DC Youth Poetry Slam Team, and the power of youth voices leading our present and future.

Sarah D Lawson is a DC-based queer writer whose poems are rooted in self, exploring themes of body, love, sexuality and gender. Her work has been featured on Button Poetry and Everyday Feminism, and published by Write Bloody Publishing, FreezeRay Press, and Drunk In A Midnight Choir. She is the founder of the Beltway Poetry Slam in Washington, DC and served as the slam master from 2010-2015. She represented DC on the 2012 Treat Yo Self team at the Southern Fried Poetry Slam, competed at the 2015 Women of the World Poetry Slam, and was the coach of the Madeira High School Louder Than A Bomb team from 2012-2015.
