- Boba Guys becomes the first boba store to unionize. Look out for their next flavor, Union Ube!

- Sony researchers find that existing models for skin hue detection have trouble with yellow skin tones. Asians: 1. Terminator: 0.

- Portland white and South Asian couple become the main characters of the internet after creating a "non-GMO, healthy" boba brand called "Better Boba" which gave off the impression original boba is inferior, unhealthy, etc.

- Kevin McCarthy becomes the first Speaker of the House to get kicked out, and we have 45 days until another potential government shutdown.

- Bedbugs strut the runway during Paris Fashion Week and now they're spreading to all parts of the country, just in time to link up with COVID strains and the flu.

95. This Week in Asian American Politics: The New York Times Profile on "Saving" NYC's Chinatown, Auto Workers Strike, Asians Hiding Asianness, Hasan Minhaj Expose

This week in Asian American news:

We cover a NYTimes article that profiling some young Asian Americans in Chinatown. Aaron, an organizer in that same Chinatown, has some thoughts.

One of the country’s oldest unions, United Auto Workers, goes on strike! They get the big 3 manufacturers play whack-a-mole with the plants and boy do GM, Ford, and Stellantis miss every mole.

A new Pew study finds that among Asian Americans, those who are young, 2nd gen, and…Democrat? are more likely to hide their culture and identity. We try to figure out why peopl are still coming up with studies like this.

The New Yorker drops a bombshell of an interview with Hasan Minhaj that has the internet in an uproar: the man exaggerates in his stand-up! As comedians, we discuss the ethics of lying in one’s jokes.

94. This Week in Asian American Politics: Asian Am. Tech Company Exploits Asian Workers Online, Making Zines About ATL's Cop City Is A Crime, Oprah's Hawaii Donations, the IRS Goes After Millionaires

This week in Asian American news:

  • We cover Scale AI, an Asian American-founded tech company that outsources the AI training to workers in Asia (particularly Nepal, India, and the Philippines). Filipino workers speak out about these “digital sweatshops.”
  • In Georgia, RICO indictments seek to paint the Stop Cop City movement as a massive criminal enterprise. Police are citing use of words like “mutual aid,” “zines,” and “collectivism” as proof of criminal conspiracy. Ok, Sherlock Holmes.
  • Billionaire Oprah donates 10million to Maui relief efforts. Native Hawaiians point out that it’s only .5% of her wealth (roughly $16 for the average American) and that she owns almost half as much land as what was burned in the fires.
  • And finally the IRS plans to actually do something cool: go after nearly 1,600 millionaires who owe a loooooot in taxes—upwards $250,000 each.

93. This Week in Asian American Politics: Japan Releases Radioactive Water into Ocean, the Republican Primary Debate, NY Dept. of Labor is SO Behind on Stolen Wages, Asian Glow? Cancer Says Hello

This week in Asian American Politics!

Japan plans to release treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster. Japanese officials say the radioactivity is “negligible,” which is like your waiter saying they got “most” of the bugs out of your salad.

Our favorite circus was in town last week: the Republican primary debate! We discuss the performance of some of the candidates and who DEFINITELY did debate club in high school.

The NY Department of Labor has failed to recover $79 million in stolen wages. It’d be nice if we could get away with not doing 63% of our jobs.

And lastly, if you turn red when you drink alcohol, you’re 40-80% more likely to develop certain cancers. It’s like we’re human traffic lights, and our bodies are telling us to stop lol.

92. This Week in Asian American Politics: Changing Races to Asian through Lofi Music, Nikki Haley & Vivek, Viral Copwatchers on Youtube, Jollibee Wage Theft, Twitter Loses Advertisers and Sues CCDH

This week in Asian American news:

We dive into the world of people who think they can change their race, specifically to Asian. And they believe listening to certain Youtube videos can help. Has Lo-fi Hip Hop Anime Chill Beats to Study and Relax To gone too far?

Two Indian Americans, Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy, are running for President. We discuss how they handle the whole “running as a brown person when your party hates brown people” thing.

While most of us can agree influencers are kinda annoying and usually when you hear about YouTubers, it’s giving some kind of apology, we learn about the world of cop-watchers or “auditors” and how they’ve held police departments accountable. Praxis!

Jollibee in NJ is not so jolly after allegedly firing workers who asked for better working conditions. Those better working conditions? A mere $3/wage increase.

Champion of free speech, Elon Musk, sues a non-profit for posting facts about how hate speech is up 200% on Twitter since he took over the platform.

91. This Week in Asian American Politics: 70th Anniversary of Korean War, Challenges to Legacy Admissions Part 2, Florida "Both-Sides" Slavery, Netflix Looks For AI Product Managers to Exploit Actors

This week in Asian American politics,

  • Many Americans don’t know that the Korean War is still ongoing. On the 70th anniversary of the war, advocates push for a formal end, which seems like a fantastic birthday present.

  • With the death of Affirmative Action, many now turn their attention to legacy admissions. The Education Department has opened a civil rights inquiry into Harvard’s, positing the question: what will happen to all the Asians that DID make it in?

  • Speaking of education, Florida passed some new standards to teach Black History, but skipped over consulting a literal volunteer force of Black educators, which probably explains why the standards say “[enslaved people] developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”

  • And last, as the WGA/SAG strikes wage on against AI, Netflix posts a product manager role for AI and machine learning with a salary band of $300-900k. We lay out an argument for why you probably shouldn’t apply for this.

90. This Week in Asian American Politics: Asian Am. Tech Worker Sues for $20 Mil, Voter Restriction Laws Affecting Asians, Hindu Nationalism in USA, Chinese Scientists Leave America, Writer's Strike!

ANNOUNCEMENT: We’ll be moving to a bi-weekly cadence in regards to episodes because life has gotten very busy and we want to make sure that we keep this sustainable for us. THANKS!

This week in Asian American news:

An Asian guy sues his company for discrimination after they fire him despite his 22 years working there and developing a $1 billion product. He claims they banned speaking Mandarin and made rice jokes.

Republicans get creative with laws to target people who assist others in voting. Asian Americans who help grandpa read a ballot or hand an aunty some water can now fear a fine as big as $50,000.

Hindu nationalism isn’t on the rise in just India, it’s also on the rise in the United States. We discuss the parallels between Hindu nationalism and Christian nationalism.

Chinese scientists are fleeing America thanks to the fallout from the China Initiative, an effort that sought to “weed out” (non-existent) Chinese spies. Relatedly, China overtook the US in most-cited publications. Hm.

And lastly, Hollywood execs say they hope to wait out writers until they lose apartments and houses. Meanwhile, SAG-AFTRA announced actors are now on strike with the WGA, the first strike together since 1960.

89. This Week in Asian American Politics: Supreme Court Supports Discrimination of Same Sex Couples, Affirmative Action, Legacy, and Military Academies, Asians and Gun Control, Shein Influencer Trip

This week in Asian American news,

  • The Supreme Court has had a busy summer making multiple rulings! We discuss the case from Colorado where a website designer who didn’t want to make a website for a gay couple that doesn’t really exist.
  • Fun fact, Affirmative Action is still alive! But only if you’re willing to die for the country overseas. Also, a civil rights group feels inspired to challenge the practice of legacy admissions.
  • A new study found that people of color overwhelmingly support gun control laws. However, it also found that the number of POC gunowners is also going up. Representation matters?
  • Lastly, several influencers flew out to a SHEIN factory on a sponsored trip, and one came back telling everyone to not believe the “propaganda” about their labor practices or environmental harm like it’s not her job to influence people.

88. This Week in Asian American Politics: Modi Visits the White House, Profiles on the Typical Japanese Millennial, the Titanic Submersible, the Lack of Vietnamese News Videos, Asians & ADHD Diagnoses

This week in Asian American news,

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits the United States, hosted by President Joe Biden. (Possibly) on the discussion agenda: the human rights violations!

Business Insider interviewed multiple millennials in Japan about the state of their lives, from finances to outlooks on marriage. We compare to our own and reflect.

Of course, we have to talk about the guillotine ride disguised as a submarine and watch how the Titanic continues to add to its body count despite being a sunken ship.

The community out in Oakland discusses the need for more news sources in Vietnamese. Grandma just wants local news, not propaganda, thanks!

It’s one of Gerrie’s favorite topics: ADHD. We talk about underdiagnosis in Asian Americans, metrics for diagnosis, and more.

87. This Week in Asian American Politics: Indian Men Marrying and Leaving Wives Behind, the Asian American Affirmative Action Cases, AAPIs Have Limited Knowledge abt Abortion Medication, Trump Arrest

This week in Asian American news,

  • Men in India are getting married, using their dowries to get citizenship in Western countries, and leaving their new wives behind. Some of the stories get worse, with one woman being stuck with her bedridden in-laws for 24 years.
  • As the fight over Affirmative Action heats up even further with the Supreme Court set to announce its decision, a new survey reveals that most Asian Americans actually support Affirmative Action (just not based on race)
  • A study by @napawf found that most Asian Americans would flop if abortion medication was a Jeopardy category, including us (Gerrie and Aaron).
  • Donald Trump finally gets arrested, and it’s Florida that catches him after all?? What a strange timeline. We also discuss his seemingly infinite supply of fall guys.

This week in Asian American politics:

  • Wildfires in Canada turn skies in NYC orange and send a thick smoke cloud to travel across the United States. We discuss the implication of this first draft at a day of dystopia and what a throwback to 2020 it is.
  • We gossip about the spiciest event in the climbing community involving a Malaysian man nearly freezing to death on Everest, being rescused by a Sherpa, and then blocking said Sherpa on all social media.
  • It’s an old article (2019), but thanks to a recent viral Tiktok, an LA Times article about Vietnam War veterans moving to Vietnam is back in the forefront of culture.
  • An ex-NYPD cop/detective is charged with helping robbers specifically target Asian American families and businesses. Law and Order: Hate Crime just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
  • And lastly, TikTok blows up over a graduation stole. Mainland Filipinos accuse the diaspora of wearing culture as an aesthetic, Filipino diaspora accuse native Filipinos of not knowing what it’s like to grow up in a Western society.

85. This Week in Asian American Politics: Vivek Ramaswamy Says Raise Vote Age, Tech Fires Misinformation Teams, Chinese Am. Scientist Held at Gunpoint, Met Museum Reparation, Asian Startups Less Money

New Tuesday, new episode!

This week in Asian American politics…

  • Republican Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy announces that he wants to raise the voting age to 25 or have 18 year olds take a civics test to opt out. Even his own staff reportedly hated the idea and begged him to wait on announcing it until they had more research.
  • Layoffs at the companies society has grown dependent on impact online safety and misinformation teams. We’re talking entire teams disappearing and the tools they developed going right with them into the Thanos snap. If you thought misinformation was bad during C*VID, buckle up for the 2024 election.
  • A Chinese American scientist is suing the FBI after they threatened him with 80 years of prison, $1 million in fees, and holding his family at gunpoint. If he wins, the case would be a landmark victory in holding the US government accountable for rampant Sinophobia.
  • The Metropolitan Museum announced they will do a better job of making sure they aren’t showcasing illegally stolen art. What measures are they implementing to ensure they are displaying the most legal of the stolen art?
  •  AAPI startups and non-profits experienced a wave of funding during the Stop Asian Hate movement. We discuss the implications of this momentum and what that means for the future.

84. This Week in Asian American Politics: Uber's Asian Head of DEI Defends White Women, Taiwan's Last Comfort Woman Dies, Asians and Hospice, Motel Patel History, Filipino Nanny Home 30 Years Later

This week in Asian American politics:

Uber’s Asian American head of diversity hosts a panel called “Don’t Call Me Karen.” Wh*te supremacy? In my APAHM? It’s more likely than you think.

Taiwan’s last comfort woman dies at 92. We discuss the history of comfort women and why a lot of Asian countries hate Japan.

Apparently, Asian Americans think a lot about dying, more so with COVID and racism, but don’t do anything to plan for that? It gets a little existential in here.

A white model posts a TikTok about how her undocumented, Filipino nanny gets to return to the Philippines for the first time in 30 years to see her actual kids. What could possibly go wrong?

82. This Week in Asian American Politics: South Asian Takes on King Charles' Coronation, Pew Research Study on Asian Americans, Asian Am. Evangelicals, Therapy Alternatives for Asians, Simu Liu Drama

This week in Asian American politics:

  • King Charles is coronated. “Coronated” is such a foreign word to us that even typing it felt funny. Anyway, we discuss the implications of the surviving UK monarchy and the response from South Asian diaspora in context of Partition. Is the monarchy even relevant anymore? Or is it simply a relic of crusty crackerness?
  • Pew Research conducts a massive survey involving thousands of Asians over the course of nearly a year, while asking about if Asian Americans choose to actually identify ethnicity-first or how well we feel like we know our own history. We discuss this temperature check on Asian American identity in 2023.
  • While still a minority, Asian American leaders are challenging the predominantly white and conservative image of evangelicalism. To be fair, someone in this article is for racial justice but implies they’re against abortion, so don’t expect leaps and bounds of connecting dots quite yet. We discuss the future of Christianity and where does Christianity play in regards to leftist politics.
  • While like Steven Yeun famously said in B**F, “Western therapy doesn’t work on Eastern minds.” Interestingly enough, it seems many Asian Americans already knew that, supplementing or flat out replacing talk therapy with good ole tai chi, yoga, and more. Aaron flexes how he’s never had a wh*te therapist, while Gerrie discusses some of the Wh*te things their previous therapist would recommend.
  • Lastly, we discuss the Asian American pop culture moment that is Simu Liu’s ego. An article written by an Asian American pointed out that other Asian American men could have been in the upcoming Barbie movie, which at its worst could be construed as pitting Asian men against each other, but is mostly simply a fact: other Asian American men exist. However, Simu replies, prompting a response from a Tiktoker (who happens to be a previous guest on this pod! Shoutout cookie!) that comments on his inability to handle criticism, and Simu replies to THAT too.

WHAT'S POLITICALLY ASIAN PODCAST?

Two Asians talking about politics and the Asian American community to get more Asians talking about politics! Join comedians Aaron Yin (he/him) and Gerrie Lim (they/them) for 45 minutes-ish each week as they discuss current topics and events related to Asian Americans through the lenses of history, class, and advocacy. Think John Oliver's show, but there's two of us, and we're Asian.

81. This Week in Asian American Politics: The Philippines Gives 4 More Bases to the US, US Debt Ceiling (we are poor), the Writers Guild of America strike, Tou Thou convicted in George Floyd case

This week in Asian American politics:

  • The United States wants to add more military bases in the Philippines as the relationship with China deteriorates. It’d be like if you got your friends to follow your current partner on social media because you’re about to break up with them and you’d like to block. Except instead of social media, it’s military bases. Also your friends are the offspring of a former dictator.

  • Do you have a bad credit score? Maybe your credit card bill is kinda lengthy? You’re not alone—so does the United States! Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warns that the government needs to figure out if we’re going to raise our own credit limit or just default on our national Amex.

  • We discuss the Writers Guild Association’s (WGA) strike. It’s the first one in 15 years or 2007. Roughly 11,500 writers across the industry have put down their pens and picked up picket signs. What are their demands? How will this affect you? And what’s different this time?

  • Tou Thou, the last cop involved in George Floyd’s murder has been convicted and sentenced to jail. Thou’s defense was claiming he didn’t know Floyd had stopped breathing. Thing are not great when your defense is that you’re bad at your job.

80. This Week in Asian American Politics: Biden's Re-election Announcement, Asian American landlord movement, Climate Change in Asia, and Streaming's AAPI Representation

This week in Asian American politics:

  • Biden announced he is running for re-election despite an NBCNews study that says 7 in 10 Americans don’t want him to do that. Biden cites the Big Bad Orange as good enough reason to run again as the oldest president America has ever had, begging the question, when will the evil be defeated?

  • We discuss an article from a conservative publication about Asian American landlords and how weirdly a bunch of people our age want to be landlords? The article cries rivers about who will stick up for the little guy small business landlords, as if we all don’t know that it’s giant corporation landlords that these regulations are about

  • Asia is hit with a “monster” heatwave—we’re talking about climate impacts across India, Pakistan, China, and the Philippines. While the US is running in circles about debating whether climate change is real, the climate catastrophe is already impacting parts of Asia that don’t have the infrastructure to protect the people.

    • And lastly, we cover a report that points out streaming has better AAPI representation than traditional broadcast cable television. Gerrie has to use their college degree for once and explain to Aaron what broadcast television is. Netflix pumps $2.5billion into South Korea content, and more.

    78. This Week in Asian American Politics: Affirmative Action, Republicans Block Gender Affirming Care, Philly Chinatown Arena, LAPD Roster Exposed by Journalist, and Julie Su Nomination Roadblock

This week in Asian American politics!

    • We discuss the history of Asian Americans and Affirmative Action, which dates back to the 1950s, before conservatives stole the narrative and molded it into one about victimhood. Apparently, Harvard admitted more Asian Americans for the class of ‘27 than ever before—related fact: they still have Affirmative Action so…
    • Republicans score gold in legal loopholes to deprive transgender people of care and to go the distance on blocking abortions. For people who claim to care about human life, they sure know how to make sure everyone else’s is hell.
    • Developers in Philly continue to push forward with the Sixers arena plan, despite all the overwhelming evidence that it would gentrify Chinatown into extinction and that there is nearly zero community support for it.
    • Los Angeles files a lawsuit against a journalist and community watchdog group to censor a public database of LAPD officer headshots the city willingly and freely gave to said journalist. Sorry, LA, no takesie backsies!
    • Joe Biden has nominated Julie Su as the Labor Department Secretary. She would be the first Asian American to hold the position, but as always, Joe Manchin has other ideas.

    77. This Week in Asian American Politics: Recent "Illegal Immigrants" from Mexico Are Chinese, N.C. Dem Turns Repub, Modi + Twitter Censors Critics in India, Angelo Quinto, 3 Nashville Dems Expelled

This Week in Asian American Politics!

    • There's been a huge increase (2x) in the number of undocumented immigrants at the Mexican border, but a lot of these immigrants are... Chinese? Send this to your politically conservative Asian network and watch them break down.
    • A North Carolina Democrat switches to the GOP and gives the GOP supermajority control of state legislature. When are Dems also gonna play dirty??
    • Elon Musk promised to reduce censorship when running Twitter but so far has just helped Indian's Prime Minister Modi censor anyone who criticizes him
    • Asians and the continued struggle against police brutality, as we remember Angelo Quinto on the 2 year anniversary of his killing by police
    • 3 Tennessee Democrats (the only 3) are ousted from their spots after joining students in protest for stronger gun control laws. "Why would China do this?" Oh wait, this is America.

    • Investors start gossiping about Silicon Valley Bank collapse. This is the level of gossip that would make Asian aunties proud
    • Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan win big at the Oscars, but unfortunately still believe in the American Dream
    • Biden once again proves he is only marginally better than Trump because he approved Trump’s oil drilling project, but only 90% of it. We did it, Joe!
    • Native Hawaiians get 6 years in prison for beating up a white guy who bragged about redeveloping their lands in a case of “reverse racism”
    • East Asians and Southeast Asians have a much higher risk of going blind because their parents don’t let them go outside

    73. This Week in Asian American Politics: NYC South Asians Get Divided, Chinatown Megajail Displacement, South Korea's 4B Feminism, No Scholarships for Undocumented CA Students, NYC Mayor Says No Mask

New episode out now! This week in Asian American politics

    • South Asians in Queens, NY have been gerrymandered by the new NYC City Council district lines, losing a lot of political power, and they are suing the Commissioner. One of the few times where you can unironically say representation matters.
    • An interview with one of the restaurant owners who was pushed out by initial fencing from the Chinatown megajail in NYC, which is not a done deal yet but already has terrible impacts on Chinatown
    • Don't let Kpop and Physical 100 fool you into thinking South Korea is all peachy. We talk about South Korea's patriarchy and the growing 4B feminism - no straight marriage, no dating, no child-rearing, no sex.
    • California universities do a really bad job of telling undocumented students that they can get scholarships. This is what happens when your state governor focuses too much on deportation.
    • Mayor Eric Adams in NYC wants people to remove their masks temporarily before entering a store, because COVID will pause for 5 seconds while you do so.

New Tuesday, new episode! This week in Asian American politics:

    • Republicans whistle a different tune this week saying Chinese non-citizens can still buy land in Texas, but there's still lots of room for false accusations and bans for people "associated with" the government
    • Julie Su is nominated for Department of Labor Secretary and we talk about her red flags and green flags
    • Racist Dilbert creator (white guy) complains about how black people are a hate group and Elon Musk brings Asians into the talk since he and the creator are besties lmao
    • Justin Lin is going to direct a movie about the Chinese American missionary who went to this isolated island near India to convert the natives and got unalived. Why
    • Fox News complains about people shutting down Victims of Communism day, but isn't every day in America already talking about that?

    • We made enough "Ohio" jokes on Tiktok and now a train derailed. Why should Americans who have never been to Ohio/will never go to Ohio care? How will it impact YOU? Because spoiler, it does!
    • The NYTimes asks 12 Asian Americans a couple of questions. We thought the questions were basic af and didn't allow for nuance in conversation—what did y'all think of this interview?
    • Child labor? In MY American country? It's more likely than you think!
    • The company that handles the country's election devices sues Fox News for defamation. Fox News says the first amendment lets them say anything even if it's false, as long as its newsworthy.

    66. This Week in Asian American Politics: K-Pop group Omega X is freed from its abusive managers, Rikers Island May Not Close, China COVID Updates, Lower Minimum Wage for Restaurant Workers, Chat GPT

New Tuesday, New episode! This week in Asian American politics:

    - K-Pop group Omega X wins its lawsuit against Spire Entertainment, its abusive management company.

    - Rikers Island may not close, even though the whole plan in NYC was to close Rikers to build "smaller" jails in Chinatown and 4 other locations. But now Eric Adams is saying not only is Rikers closing up in the air, he still wants the 4 new jails. Cop city!

    - Workers in China lose their jobs and protest. The catch is these jobs are the essential ones.

    - Restaurant workers have to pay for training, and many of them get their certificate through Servsafe. The twist? Servsafe uses that money to lobby against minimum wage increases for restaurant workers

    - ChatGPT is not racist. Yet.

    62. This Week in Asian American Politics: Biden Protects Same-Sex Marriage, Okinawans Tell U.S. Troops to GTFO, China-Hong Kong Conflict via Song, Indonesia Protects Sexpats, Asian VICE Panel

This week in Asian American politics:

    - Joe Biden signs the Respect for Marriage Act, which sounds like something conservatives would make up to support a "traditional marriage" but it actually protects same-sex marriage and interracial marriage. All it took was Joe Biden's entire life for him to come around on gay people!

    - Okinawa is home to 75% of US military bases in Japan, and there are many Okinawans who have protested against the troops for years for leaving military waste in the country, on top of multiple acts of gendered violence. If there's one country where you shouldn't leave trash, it's Japan.

    - China has been pushing Google to remove Glory to Hong Kong, a song written during the Hong Kong protests a few years ago. Google, surprisingly, says no!

    - Indonesia published a new Criminal Code, and one section provides protections to sexpats (gross). Tourists' marital status won't be checked at hotels, spas, salons, etc. and for them, having sex outside of marriage is not a crime. tfw when you hate sexpats but need the money from tourism.

    - VICE published a 45 minute panel with Asian Americans of different ethnicities and political leanings. The panel was on the model minority myth and Stop Asian Hate, and we watched it so you don't have to worry about your blood pressure.

This week in Asian American Politics!

    - Country with the most amount of people (China) listens to its protesting people and loosens up COVID restrictions. Asian Americans in Georgia overwhelmingly vote for Raphael Warnock, helping him beat Herschel Walker, the latest Trump supporter to run for Senate.

    - WW2 explosives are still buried in Native Hawaiian ancestral lands, preventing Native Hawaiians from building housing while billionaires like Oprah (?!) buy out Hawaii.

    - Brown University becomes the first Ivy League to establish caste protection. No one can experience unequal treatment because of their caste while on campus (hypothetically).

    - NYT goes on strike for 1 day. Does anything.. happen?

    - Asian Republican in Orange County talks about racism being a public health crisis and a white Republican calls him a slur LMAO the irony..

    60. This Week in Asian American Politics: NYPD Hospitalizes Mentally Ill People w/o Consent, Hate Crime Grant Recipients A Mystery, COVID Protests in China, Railroad Strikes, Asian Voters in Georgia

This week in Asian American politics!

    - The NYPD can now involuntarily hospitalize any mentally ill person on the street who appears "unable to take care of themselves". What could possibly go wrong?

    - 2 years ago, NYC launched a $1 million fund for innovative solutions to hate crimes that don't involve the police. The fund was split into many $20k grants, but none of that money has been given out, and no one knows what happened to it. Did someone in NYC cash in a huge Christmas bonus??

    - COVID protests in China. If there's any place for mass change, it has to be the country with the most amount of people.

    - Joe Biden goes from "Union Joe" to "Anti-Union Joe" as he tries to shut down the railroad worker strike and force them to accept a shitty bargain. So not "We did it, Joe"

    - Very important Senate election going on in Georgia today (Raphael Warnock vs. Herschel Walker), and Asian voters may make the difference between a progressive (at least on paper) and a Trump clone. Go vote!

    59. This Week in Asian American Politics: Pacific Island Tuvalu Moves to Metaverse, Asian Tech Workers Scramble for New Visa Sponsors, FTX Collapse, Ticketmaster Lawsuit, Mitch McConnell lmao

New Tuesday, new episode! This week in Asian American Politics

    - Pacific Island Tuvalu is rapidly sinking underwater, so they're making plans to digitize the entire nation. If New York City ever sinks, please please make  Staten Island go first.

    - Asian Techpocalpyse is happening as tens of thousands of tech workers are being laid off. Many tech workers are H1-B visa holders and if they can't find another company to sponsor them in 60 days, they will get deported. Think 90-day Fiance, but 60-day Visa.

    - FTX, a place where people go to buy and sell crypto, has collapsed, and we dive into all the players (many of whom are Asian) involved. Is this the end of cryto?? (fingers crossed)

    - Ticketmaster pisses off the Swifties. The Taylor Swift army is rallying to get the DOJ to split up Ticketmaster and Live Nation, and on our side, we talk about the best way to make Ticketmaster cave.

    - Mitch McConnell, Republican Senate Leader and rare white guy who doesn't constantly talk about his Asian wife, nevertheless votes against interracial marriage in a new Senate bill.

    58. This Week in Asian American Politics: Chinese Am. Scientist Accused of Spying Settles $2M from US, World Cup Exploits Nepalese Workers, Asian Americans & Abortion, Kenneth Mejia Wins, NY Elections

This week in Asian American Politics:

    - Chinese American scientist Sherry Chen, who was falsely accused of spying and arrested in 2014, wins her legal case. She's settled for $2 million from the US Government and more importantly, a formal meeting and apology from her boss (also the US gov).

    - The FIFA World Cup is happening this week, but behind the scenes, the organization is exploiting and k-wording workers who helped build its stadiums, many of whom are Nepalese, Indian, and Filipino.

    - Study finds Asian Americans have the "highest rate of support for abortion" but the study also did not include any Asian person in America who doesn't speak English.

    - Kenneth Mejia becomes the first Certified Public Accountant to hold the title of LA Controller (LA's Accountant)

    - Democrats barely win NY against Trump clones

New Tuesday, new episode! This week in Asian American politics:

    - The Supreme Court is deciding whether to get rid of affirmative action or not and it's the one of the few times where almost all Asian people have an opinion on something related to politics

    - LA Chinatown slumlord Don Toy seeks to profit from abusing Asian elders by selling Cathay Manor, one of the last low-income apartment units in Chinatown.

    - Boba Guys record employee audio without consent and use it to fire them

    - Elon Musk buys Twitter. Everyone, it's time to go to Tumblr.

    56. This Week in Asian American Politics: Rishi Sunak, American Samoan Citizenship Rejected, Paris Baguette Boycott, Asian-on-Asian Clownery in Orange County, Affirmative Action in Supreme Court

This week in Asian American politics:

    - The UK gets its first South Asian multimillionaire conservative Prime Minister! Woohoo?

    - American Samoans' birthright citizenship case doesn't even get considered by the Supreme Court. What happened to taxation without representation?

    - A worker dies on the job at Paris Baguette and in classic capitalist fashion, workers are asked to work the next day, leading to a boycott of the popular South Korean bakery chain.

    - Orange County gets a new district that brings together several Asian communities in a once-in-a-decade opportunity, with two Asian American candidates. Unfortunately, all that happens is one of them calls the other Communist, and the other keeps talking about how he served in the Army.

    - The Supreme Court might get rid of affirmative action real soon, and if so, buckle up Asian America!

    55. This Week in Asian American Politics: Salon Workers' Reproductive Health, Shein Worker Exploitation, BTS Does Military Service, Anna May Wong on the Quarter, NY Law Banning Online Homicide Videos

This week in Asian America politics!

    - Lots of nail salon workers in America are Asian, and this week we talk about how their reproductive health is heavily harmed by the chemicals they work with for 8+ hours a day. In NYC, there are new regulations requiring better ventilation starting this year, but for many workers it's too late.

    - Shein is the Thanos of worker violations. In a new piece by the Cut, journalists cover the intense conditions of Shein workers. Will this be enough to stop Gen Z's love for fast fashion?

    - BTS' 2-year hiatus. Members of the K-pop boyband have to do South Korea's mandatory military service because.. geopolitics.

    - Hollywood pioneer Anna May Wong is on the quarter. Is this the U.S. government's way of trying to placate East Asians in America after the last few years of anti-Asian violence?

    - In NY, the Attorney General Leticia James is calling on a ban on online homicide videos after the shooting in Buffalo, NY earlier in the year. Will this stop all those aspiring shooters on 4chan?

    54. This Week in Asian American Politics: Trump Subpoena and Elaine Chao, U.S. Bans Huawei Phones, Seattle Scraps Shelter Expansion Near Chinatown, Adderall Shortage, NYC Delivery Workers Get Rest Hub

This week in Asian American politics:

    - Trump is subpoena'd by the Jan 6th. committee. Elaine Chao finally believes in democracy once rioters take over the capital. Will Trump finally go to prison, or is his plot armor too strong?

    - U.S. bans all new Huawei devices, proving they can tell Asian (devices) apart.

    - Seattle cancels plans to expand a 270-bed shelter in Sodo, just south of the Chinatown International District. Will they use this money to build some affordable permanent housing now for Kings County residents?

    - There's a nation-wide Adderall shortage and the company that makes the most Adderall for America is deep in shady shit.

    - NYC delivery workers finally get the bare minimum: a resting and charging hub they can stay at in between orders.

    53. This Week in Asian American Politics: Constance Wu Returns, Southeast Asian Cities Sinking Faster, Migrant Crisis in Texas, YouTube Sued for Algorithms that Radicalize, Amazon Warehouse Fire

This week in Asian American Politics!

    - Constance Wu is back online and shares stories of how not all skinfolk are kinfolk, even in the entertainment industry.

    - Coastal cities in Southeast Asia are sinking faster from rising sea levels compared to other metropolitan cities due to differences in soil composition. Are we gonna get climate change reparations for smaller countries suffering the most from larger countries'

    - Democrats in El Paso are sending more migrants to New York City than Republicans. Greg Abbott is punching the air rn.

    - Families are suing YouTube for actively promoting content that radicalizes people. These are families who have lost someone due to white supremacy, ISIS, etc. who argue Youtube should be held accountable because its algorithms were actively recommending more radical videos from QAnon, ISIS, etc. Tech companies are not the "passive" third parties they claim to be,

    - Amazon's JFK8 warehouse caught on fire, and Amazon suspended 50 workers who didn't want to get black lung by going back to work immediately after.

    52. This Week in Asian American Politics: Federal Bill to Stop Southeast Asian Deportation, NY Mag Interviews Christina Yuna Lee's Landlord, Asian Nannies Speak on Class and Race, Seattle's Chinatown

New episode out now! And maybe one of our best? This week in Asian American politics:

    - You know what they say, third time's a charm for ending Southeast Asian deportation! There's a new bill introduced by Congress Members in California to end deportations for Southeast Asian refugees who fled to America before 2008… which includes many people who came to America because America destroyed their country.

    - NY Mag interviews Christina Yuna Lee's Landlord and let's just say we weren't expecting the fight that happened? We share our opinions on Asian Americans and how they view the police and whether they think jails make people better or worse.

    - NY Mag did some great profiles on Asian immigrant nannies who had to deal with Asian hate at home from their abusive Asian host families in addition to Asian hate happening outside in the city. A masterpiece in illustrating how not all skinfolk are kinfolk.

    - Seattle's city government proposes a new "mega-shelter" and a light-rail project all in Chinatown, threatening displacement of exiting residents and businesses. If there's one thing to take away from this, it's to stay involved with local politics because city governments will do the most minimal outreach and then acted surprised when you're angry.

    - New programs to teach Cantonese are popping up all over the US and UK as most programs that exist focus on Mandarin! Maybe it's time to feature a sequel to Shang Chi where he learns the Legend of the Nine Tones. (We also didn't know Cantonese has nine tones).

    51. This Week in Asian American Politics: Ohio Candidates Try to Make Ohio Great Again with Asian Racism, Protests in Iran, Adnan Syed Released, Philippines Pres. Visits U.S, More Cameras in NYC MTA

This week in Asian American politics:

    - Like a 40 year old dad who tells everyone he played varsity football, Ohio Senate candidates nostalgically cling to the idea of Ohio being a manufacturing state. Despite Ohio having a large nursing industry that makes up most of its economy, these candidates are stoking anti-China flames to bring back manufacturing and get elected, even if this spells Ohio's economic collapse.

    - Many protests start in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini by Iran's "morality police", and as expected, every cringy US politician comes out of the woodwork.

    - Adnan Syed, who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Hae Min Lee, was finally released from prison as prosecutors find new evidence, investigate other suspects, and no longer have enough confidence in their original conviction. Adnan was the subject of the first season of Serial (the podcast), and his case drew national attention to how self-serving attorneys, shady cops, and clunky 1999 technology is a recipe for disaster for accused POC.

    - Ferdinand Marcos Jr. arrives in the US to rekindle things with Biden and is welcomed by large crowds of protesting Filipinos who want him to pay for the war crimes his father did and the money his father stole.

    - NYC plans to install 2 subway cameras in every subway car because reacting and documenting crime is all NYC is good for.

    50. This Week in Asian American Politics: Cambodian Refugee Sophea Phea Undeported, "Aesthetic" Asian Activists, Columbia U. Goes From #2 to #18, Congress Does Suspicious Trades, Patagonia Given Away

This Week in Asian American Politics

    - Cambodian refugee Sophea Phea, who was deported by ICE 11 years ago, finally returns to the U.S. and is reunited with family.

    - "Aesthetic" Asian activists jump on the #StopAsianHate bandwagon for a year and are now trying to solve racism with NFTs. People will think twice about committing hate crimes knowing I have a picture of an ape.

    - Columbia University was exposed by its own Math professor of manipulating its data to get higher on US News' college ranking. So much for Ivy Leagues being strict about cheating.

    - Almost 100 members of Congress have been doing stock trades with high conflicts of interest i.e. they're on a committee judging a company that they also own a lot of stock in.

    - Patagonia billionaire founder gives away his company. Is this our first ethical billionaire?? (No)

    49. This Week in Asian American Politics: CA Says #ContinueAsianHate & Keeps Prison-to-Deportation, SF District Attorney Reviews Hate Crime Cases, Anti-Asian Hate Bill, No Masks on MTA, Queen Dies

This week in Asian American politics:

    - California lawmakers say #ContinueAsianHate and vote to keep the prison-to-ICE deportation pipeline, something that affects many Southeast Asians (see Phoeun You).

    - SF District Attorney Brooke Jenkins takes California back to the 1990s by being "tough on crime." Her team is reviewing past cases to see if hate crime labels can be applied to them retroactively. Will this actually do anything to solve the root issues leading to crime in SF?

    - Two noncontroversial Anti-Asian Hate bills pass in CA, just not the ones actually actively harming Asian peoples' lives (see ICE deportation issue above)

    - Kathy Hochul makes masks optional on all public transit in NYC. The only places masks are required now are hospitals and nursing homes. We hate it here!!

    - Queen Elizabeth said Cheerio and every colonized person in the world said Finally.

    48. This Week in Asian American Politics: Low-Income Asians Affected by Roe vs. Wade, the Rise of South Asian Studies, NYC's Gun-Free Zones, Starbucks' New Asian CEO, Oli London Half Apologizes

This week in Asian American Politics:

    - Many low-income Asian women live in conservative states where abortion is now illegal, with one of the main states being Texas. Contrary to what Texas says, it's time to mess with Texas so they stop messing with basic rights.

    - South Asian Studies programs are being created at more universities. The twist? They're mainly offered at Ivy League$ and there are plenty of white professors teaching it who probably say "chai tea"

    - NYC Announces Gun-Free Zones, and we get to see another example of taxpayer money being wasted on big signs that no one reads.

    - Starbucks has a new CEO! He's South Asian and very likely a union buster. I can already see the Nextshark article that ignores the second point.

    - Oli London finally apologies for trying to be Jimin but also still identifies as Korean?

    WHAT'S POLITICALLY ASIAN PODCAST?

Two Asians talking about politics and the Asian American community to get more Asians talking about politics! Join comedians Aaron Yin (he/him) and Gerrie Lim (they/them) for 45 minutes-ish each week as they discuss current topics and events related to Asian Americans through the lenses of history, class, and advocacy. Think John Oliver's show, but there's two of us, and we're Asian.
