If New York City ever sinks, please please make  Staten Island go first. - Asian Techpocalpyse is happening as tens of thousands of tech workers are being laid off. Think 90-day Fiance, but 60-day Visa. - FTX, a place where people go to buy and sell crypto, has collapsed, and we dive into all the players (many of whom are Asian) involved. Is this the end of cryto?? (fingers crossed) - Ticketmaster pisses off the Swifties. The Taylor Swift army is rallying to get the DOJ to split up Ticketmaster and Live Nation, and on our side, we talk about the best way to make Ticketmaster cave. - Mitch McConnell, Republican Senate Leader and rare white guy who doesn't constantly talk about his Asian wife, nevertheless votes against interracial marriage in a new Senate bill. -- WHAT'S POLITICALLY ASIAN PODCAST? 56. This Week in Asian American Politics: Rishi Sunak, American Samoan Citizenship Rejected, Paris Baguette Boycott, Asian-on-Asian Clownery in Orange County, Affirmative Action in Supreme Court
This week in Asian American politics: - The UK gets its first South Asian multimillionaire conservative Prime Minister! Woohoo? - American Samoans' birthright citizenship case doesn't even get considered by the Supreme Court. What happened to taxation without representation? - A worker dies on the job at Paris Baguette and in classic capitalist fashion, workers are asked to work the next day, leading to a boycott of the popular South Korean bakery chain. - Orange County gets a new district that brings together several Asian communities in a once-in-a-decade opportunity, with two Asian American candidates. Unfortunately, all that happens is one of them calls the other Communist, and the other keeps talking about how he served in the Army. - The Supreme Court might get rid of affirmative action real soon, and if so, buckle up Asian America! -- WHAT'S POLITICALLY ASIAN PODCAST? 55. This Week in Asian American Politics: Salon Workers' Reproductive Health, Shein Worker Exploitation, BTS Does Military Service, Anna May Wong on the Quarter, NY Law Banning Online Homicide Videos
This week in Asian America politics! - Lots of nail salon workers in America are Asian, and this week we talk about how their reproductive health is heavily harmed by the chemicals they work with for 8+ hours a day. In NYC, there are new regulations requiring better ventilation starting this year, but for many workers it's too late. - Shein is the Thanos of worker violations. In a new piece by the Cut, journalists cover the intense conditions of Shein workers. Will this be enough to stop Gen Z's love for fast fashion? - BTS' 2-year hiatus. Members of the K-pop boyband have to do South Korea's mandatory military service because.. geopolitics.  - Hollywood pioneer Anna May Wong is on the quarter. Is this the U.S. government's way of trying to placate East Asians in America after the last few years of anti-Asian violence? - In NY, the Attorney General Leticia James is calling on a ban on online homicide videos after the shooting in Buffalo, NY earlier in the year. 54. This Week in Asian American Politics: Trump Subpoena and Elaine Chao, U.S. Bans Huawei Phones, Seattle Scraps Shelter Expansion Near Chinatown, Adderall Shortage, NYC Delivery Workers Get Rest Hub
This week in Asian American politics: - Trump is subpoena'd by the Jan 6th. committee. Elaine Chao finally believes in democracy once rioters take over the capital. Will Trump finally go to prison, or is his plot armor too strong? - U.S. bans all new Huawei devices, proving they can tell Asian (devices) apart. - Seattle cancels plans to expand a 270-bed shelter in Sodo, just south of the Chinatown International District. Will they use this money to build some affordable permanent housing now for Kings County residents? - There's a nation-wide Adderall shortage and the company that makes the most Adderall for America is deep in shady shit. - NYC delivery workers finally get the bare minimum: a resting and charging hub they can stay at in between orders. -- WHAT'S POLITICALLY ASIAN PODCAST? 53. This Week in Asian American Politics: Constance Wu Returns, Southeast Asian Cities Sinking Faster, Migrant Crisis in Texas, YouTube Sued for Algorithms that Radicalize, Amazon Warehouse Fire
This week in Asian American Politics! - Constance Wu is back online and shares stories of how not all skinfolk are kinfolk, even in the entertainment industry.  - Coastal cities in Southeast Asia are sinking faster from rising sea levels compared to other metropolitan cities due to differences in soil composition. Are we gonna get climate change reparations for smaller countries suffering the most from larger countries' - Democrats in El Paso are sending more migrants to New York City than Republicans. Greg Abbott is punching the air rn. - Families are suing YouTube for actively promoting content that radicalizes people. These are families who have lost someone due to white supremacy, ISIS, etc. who argue Youtube should be held accountable because its algorithms were actively recommending more radical videos from QAnon, ISIS, etc. Tech companies are not the "passive" third parties they claim to be, - Amazon's JFK8 warehouse caught on fire, and Amazon suspended 50 workers who didn't want to get black lung by going back to work immediately after. -- WHAT'S POLITICALLY ASIAN PODCAST? 52. This Week in Asian American Politics: Federal Bill to Stop Southeast Asian Deportation, NY Mag Interviews Christina Yuna Lee's Landlord, Asian Nannies Speak on Class and Race, Seattle's Chinatown
New episode out now! And maybe one of our best? This week in Asian American politics: - You know what they say, third time's a charm for ending Southeast Asian deportation! There's a new bill introduced by Congress Members in California to end deportations for Southeast Asian refugees who fled to America before 2008… which includes many people who came to America because America destroyed their country. - NY Mag interviews Christina Yuna Lee's Landlord and let's just say we weren't expecting the fight that happened? We share our opinions on Asian Americans and how they view the police and whether they think jails make people better or worse.  - NY Mag did some great profiles on Asian immigrant nannies who had to deal with Asian hate at home from their abusive Asian host families in addition to Asian hate happening outside in the city. A masterpiece in illustrating how not all skinfolk are kinfolk. - Seattle's city government proposes a new "mega-shelter" and a light-rail project all in Chinatown, threatening displacement of exiting residents and businesses. If there's one thing to take away from this, it's to stay involved with local politics because city governments will do the most minimal outreach and then acted surprised when you're angry.  - New programs to teach Cantonese are popping up all over the US and UK as most programs that exist focus on Mandarin! Maybe it's time to feature a sequel to Shang Chi where he learns the Legend of the Nine Tones. (We also didn't know Cantonese has nine tones). -- WHAT'S POLITICALLY ASIAN PODCAST? 51. This Week in Asian American Politics: Ohio Candidates Try to Make Ohio Great Again with Asian Racism, Protests in Iran, Adnan Syed Released, Philippines Pres. Visits U.S, More Cameras in NYC MTA
This week in Asian American politics: - Like a 40 year old dad who tells everyone he played varsity football, Ohio Senate candidates nostalgically cling to the idea of Ohio being a manufacturing state. Despite Ohio having a large nursing industry that makes up most of its economy, these candidates are stoking anti-China flames to bring back manufacturing and get elected, even if this spells Ohio's economic collapse. - Many protests start in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini by Iran's "morality police", and as expected, every cringy US politician comes out of the woodwork.  - Adnan Syed, who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Hae Min Lee, was finally released from prison as prosecutors find new evidence, investigate other suspects, and no longer have enough confidence in their original conviction. Adnan was the subject of the first season of Serial (the podcast), and his case drew national attention to how self-serving attorneys, shady cops, and clunky 1999 technology is a recipe for disaster for accused POC. - Ferdinand Marcos Jr. arrives in the US to rekindle things with Biden and is welcomed by large crowds of protesting Filipinos who want him to pay for the war crimes his father did and the money his father stole. - NYC plans to install 2 subway cameras in every subway car because reacting and documenting crime is all NYC is good for. This Week in Asian American Politics - Cambodian refugee Sophea Phea, who was deported by ICE 11 years ago, finally returns to the U.S. and is reunited with family. - "Aesthetic" Asian activists jump on the #StopAsianHate bandwagon for a year and are now trying to solve racism with NFTs. People will think twice about committing hate crimes knowing I have a picture of an ape. - Columbia University was exposed by its own Math professor of manipulating its data to get higher on US News' college ranking. So much for Ivy Leagues being strict about cheating. - Almost 100 members of Congress have been doing stock trades with high conflicts of interest i.e. they're on a committee judging a company that they also own a lot of stock in. - Patagonia billionaire founder gives away his company. 49. This Week in Asian American Politics: CA Says #ContinueAsianHate & Keeps Prison-to-Deportation, SF District Attorney Reviews Hate Crime Cases, Anti-Asian Hate Bill, No Masks on MTA, Queen Dies
This week in Asian American politics: - California lawmakers say #ContinueAsianHate and vote to keep the prison-to-ICE deportation pipeline, something that affects many Southeast Asians (see Phoeun You). - SF District Attorney Brooke Jenkins takes California back to the 1990s by being "tough on crime." Her team is reviewing past cases to see if hate crime labels can be applied to them retroactively. Will this actually do anything to solve the root issues leading to crime in SF? - Two noncontroversial Anti-Asian Hate bills pass in CA, just not the ones actually actively harming Asian peoples' lives (see ICE deportation issue above) - Kathy Hochul makes masks optional on all public transit in NYC. The only places masks are required now are hospitals and nursing homes. We hate it here!! - Queen Elizabeth said Cheerio and every colonized person in the world said Finally. -- CHECK US OUT ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Our memes are so good Asian people will mention them when they meet us in real life. ➤ Instagram: https://instagram.com/politicallyasianpodcast/ ➤ Twitter: https://twitter.com/politicasianpod ➤ Website: https://politicallyasianpodcast.com -- INQUIRIES: politicallyasianpodcast@gmail.com -- SUPPORT US ON PATREON (currently fundraising for episode transcription services and a video editor): https://patreon.com/politicallyasian -- ALGORITHM? 48. This Week in Asian American Politics: Low-Income Asians Affected by Roe vs. Wade, the Rise of South Asian Studies, NYC's Gun-Free Zones, Starbucks' New Asian CEO, Oli London Half Apologizes
This week in Asian American Politics: - Many low-income Asian women live in conservative states where abortion is now illegal, with one of the main states being Texas. Contrary to what Texas says, it's time to mess with Texas so they stop messing with basic rights. - South Asian Studies programs are being created at more universities. The twist? They're mainly offered at Ivy League$ and there are plenty of white professors teaching it who probably say "chai tea" - NYC Announces Gun-Free Zones, and we get to see another example of taxpayer money being wasted on big signs that no one reads. - Starbucks has a new CEO! He's South Asian and very likely a union buster. I can already see the Nextshark article that ignores the second point. - Oli London finally apologies for trying to be Jimin but also still identifies as Korean? 47. This Week in Asian American Politics: Chinese International Students Say Bye to U.S. Universities, Biden Cancels Some Student Debt, Gang Chen and the China Initiative, Trader Joe's Union Busting
This week in Asian American Politics - Chinese international students have poorer views on America and American universities (finally!) - Biden cancels some student debt. Is this moment a "We did it, Joe" or not? - Gang Chen, a natural US Citizen and MIT Professor, discovers groundbreaking battery with fellow MIT researchers after being terrorized for years by the FBI and Department of Justice for being a "Chinese spy" - Trader Joe's? More like Traitor Joe's. The company union busts its workers who were organizing at the famous NYC Union Square wine shop. - NYC looks into congestion pricing for drivers, so the City can repair the MTA that we all love and hope does not collapse beneath our feet. 40. How to Represent Your District feat. Shahana Hanif (New York City Council Member, District 39)
This week we have NYC Council Member Shahana Hanif! Shahana represents District 39, which includes parts of Kensington, Borough Park, Windsor Terrace, Park Slope, Gowanus, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, and the Columbia Waterfront. She's also the Co-Chair of the Progressive Caucus and Chair of the Immigration Committee. We ask her questions about working with our NYPD-loving Mayor Eric Adams and how to get him to think about community safety in ways that don't involve more police officers and homeless encampment sweeps. After that, we go into some lightning rounds about other work that Shahana does as a Council Member. Sorry for the shortness of this episode! We were on a very tight schedule and tried to pack as many question as possible in the amount of time we had together for recording. This week we talked with two amazing people Vivi Le (she/her) and Kris Chan (he/they) from Chinatown Community for Equitable Development aka CCED! If you haven't heard of CCED before, check them out on their very active Instagram @ccedla. They do amazing work related to tenant organizing, small business organizing, and general organizing against displacement in LA Chinatown. We talk about Asian art gallery gentrifiers pushing out existing Asian residents in LA Chinatown, how to organize across generations and different ethnicities, and how to define success when organizing efforts and wins can take years! Unfortunately, we had some internet issues while recording so this is about 70% of the original audio, which is why Kris disappears towards the end. 31: How to Talk to Your Republican Parents feat. Cookie Duong (Asian Americans with Republican Parents Support Group on Facebook, the Interpreter)
We're back with Season 4! To start things off, we talk with Cookie Duong (she/her, @parisbynightcore on Tik Tok) who is the cofounder of Asian Americans with Republican Parents Support Group on Facebook (10k members), and the Interpreter, an ethnic newsroom that translates English-language articles from credible news outlets into Vietnamese. We talk about the history of the group, why she thinks so many Asian Americans have right-wing parents, and how she put together an impressive 22-slide deck to successfully convince her dad to note vote for Tr*mp in 2020! So many graphs! Hope you enjoy, and as always, please support us by leaving a 5-star review on Apple or Spotify. -- WHAT'S POLITICALLY ASIAN PODCAST? 30: Don’t Go To Ivy Leagues: Asian American Data Disaggregation and Ivy League Professors Who Hate Asians
This is the last episode for Season 3! In this episode, we talk about Asian American data disaggregation happening in New York, Eric Adams' rocky start as Mayor, and some Ivy League racism! We dive into this more in the episode, but just because a professor teaches at an Ivy League and has a resume that is most Asian parents' wet dream does not mean that professor will be progressive and anti-racist. We have some exciting guests for Season 4, some of whom you've definitely heard of if you pay any attention to news related to Asian Americans, so stay tuned! 29: So Much Beef between U.S. and China
This week it's just us, but there's so much to talk about. We start by talking about the China Initiative, and how the first person found guilty of being a "Chinese spy" is a WHITE GUY HARVARD PROFESSOR (lmao). We then go into Joe Biden's new AANHPI advisory group (Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander) and how we feel about this roster, which includes Daniel Dae Kim. We wrap it up unpacking how we feel about all these celebrities coming out of nowhere who are making China their whole personality. 26: Boba Liberal to Professional Asian feat. Jenny G. Zhang (Gawker)
This week we talk with Jenny G. Zhang about her Identity Fraud piece on Gawker! We're not talking Identity Fraud in the traditional sense (e.g. scamming elderly folks for their SSN), but in a different way involving POC who use race as disingenuous defense when they're called out for doing something bad. Think corrupt Asian landlords who, when called out for being shitty towards their tenants, deflect criticism by saying we're being racist because they are Asian (??). We also talk about white people and POC reactions to Jenny's piece, as well as some of her earlier work. Aaron accidentally calls out one of Young's sponsors in his hot take for Hot Take Hot Pot, Gerrie stirs the hot pot with Sandra Oh, and Young talks to us about his time on Tik Tok educating/correcting K-Pop stans and Koreaboos who try to explain Korean culture to him. Fun fact for this episode, Kai is actually a pseudonym for our guest because they’ve been arrested at protests, which we thought was cool because it shows they are extremely down for the cause. 17: The 2020 Census Said No More White People feat. Julie Kim (Queens Borough Lead for the NYC Census 2020, Asian American Feminist Collective)
The 2020 Census data is out, baby! This week we talked with Julie Kim (@julieaekim), who was the Queens Borough Lead for the NYC Census 2020 and is also the cofounder of the Asian American Feminist Collective (@aafcollective)! We break down how the Census is not just a fun tally of the US population, but a tool that determines how much money is allocated to different states. cities, and counties every decade. Fun (potentially depressing) fact: due to the pandemic, this was the first time the Census went digital. Julie also talks about how she got started with organizing and teaches us the term grass-top organizing! Tune in to hear how we’re going to celebrate white people no longer being the plurality in Queens!  WHAT'S POLITICALLY ASIAN PODCAST? This week we’re talking with Esther Tseng (@estarla, LA Times, Eater, Bon Appétit, Time Out) , a food journalist who writes about food and culture and food justice. We talk with Esther about food access and income inequality, outrage against white chefs inventing “superior” Asian food (e.g. Lucky Lee’s, Congee Karen), and how to move from outrage to action when seeing these pieces designed to make us mad.
