Episode 39. The Valley Below, collective voices, sharing experiences of postnatal anxiety & depression through song with Oneewa McDowell & Shara Hala'api'api from Blackbird Songwriting

Episode 39. The Valley Below, collective voices, sharing experiences of postnatal anxiety & depression through song with Oneewa McDowell from Blackbird Songwriting

For national PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia) week, this episode is a little bit different. Oneewa McDowell joins me to share how her sister Shara Hala'api'api and herself came together with 12 other women to create a song, a collective voice for others who may be experiencing or have experienced postpartum mental health challenges.

The raw and real, yet inspiring song is woven throughout Oneewa sharing. The song goes deep and touches on the very real aspects of postpartum mental health experiences. Please reach out for support if you are feeling sad, depressed, anxious and alone, as the voices within the song did and slowly found healing and connection. See links to hotlines to call below.

For the project, Oneewa and Shara spoke with 12 women about their experiences of postnatal depression & anxiety. The aim was to honour and acknowledge the stories of these mothers, and to give a voice to their experiences through song.

A song that we hope will reach a mother who will find she is not alone in her journey;

A song that we hope will bring some comfort and understanding to a mother who is struggling;

A song that may inspire a mother to tell her own story.

Listen and let the song speak for itself.

Oneewa and Shara want to express our deepest gratitude to the 12 mothers who have been involved in the project, for sharing their story with such honesty and openness, and for making this project possible.

Also to acknowledge PANDA and the Gidget Foundation for their support in connecting us with the women involved in this project.

The song was released and shared during PANDA/Perinatal Mental Health Week, 8th-14th November, 2020.

If you would like to share the song also, that would be wonderful and you can share the link to the youtube video - website page - facebook

Song written and performed by Shara Hala'api'api on vocals and harmonies and Oneewa McDowell on piano/keys and harmonies of Blackbird Songwriting

Ep. 35 Matrescence, the history, rite of passage, understanding and role in today's world with clinical psychologist Aurelie Athan PhD

Ep. 35 Matrescence, the history, rite of passage, understanding and role in today's world with clinical psychologist Aurelie Athan PhD

Aurelie Athan PhD is a clinical psychologist and faculty member at The Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. Aurelie has dedicated much of the last 15 years of her career in Reproductive Identity, understanding and revival of the term Matrescence, originally coined by Anthropologist Dana Raphael in the 1970’s. In fact the popular TED Talk by Alexandra Sacks on Matrescence, was inspired by one of Aurelie’s conference talks. Aurelie’s working definition of the term Matrescence is: “The process of becoming a mother, coined by Dana Raphael, Ph.D. (1973), is a developmental passage where a woman transitions through pre-conception, pregnancy and birth, surrogacy or adoption, to the postnatal period and beyond. The exact length of matrescence is individual, recurs with each child, and may arguably last a lifetime! The scope of the changes encompass multiple domains --bio-psycho-social-political-spiritual-- and can be likened to the developmental push of adolescence. Increased attention to mothers has spurred new findings, from neuroscience to economics, and supports the rationale for a new field of study known as matrescence. Such an arena would allow the roundtable of specialists to come together and advance our understanding of this life passage.”

- Aurélie Athan, Ph.D.

Listen in to this super interesting and thought provoking podcast to hear us discuss:

- The history of Matrescence

- The importance of reviving an understanding in this area of Matrescence and creating new language for a greater understanding across many professions and amongst our communities

- Aurelie’s 15 years of dedication in this area, the how, why and discoveries

- The spiritual aspect of Motherhood

- Creating a wholistic cross-disciplinary approach

Ep. 29 Introduction to nourishing foods for preconception, pregnancy, postpartum and beyond

Ep. 29 Introduction to nourishing foods for preconception, pregnancy, postpartum and beyond

My inaugural solo podcast! Recorded while we're all in lockdown, I was inspired to jump on and share an introduction to nourishing foods at this time. Partly as I had prepared for a talk local online support group and had my notes ready and partly because it has been harder for me to get free time to record with others. However I found a moment. I'm hoping to jump on and do more about this topic, home herbalism, the pillars of postpartum care etc.

I discuss:

- A short intro about me, my passion for traditional postpartum care and background studies

- The pillars of traditional postpartum care

- Weston A Price and the Wise Traditions Philosophy

- Key nutrient dense foods and some key vitamins

- A basic run-down of how to make bone broth

- A list of just some of the common postpartum foods found in various cultures

This is really just scratching the surface. I hope you enjoy!

Ep. 19 . Well woman care, menstrual cycles, postpartum wellness & seasons of a woman's life with Janelle Gullan - The Wild Orange Tree

Janelle Gullan from The Wild Orange Tree is an occupational therapist with a strong interest in women’s health and the ways we experience feminine rites of passage. Her passion is in nurturing and empowering women to listen to their own body so they can navigate conception, pregnancy, birth and ongoing mothering experiences with self-love, confidence and vitality. Janelle believes that our internal cycles and rhythms are a potent road map for these transitions; and the knowledge we have about, and the way we connect to, our pelvic space is another powerful tool for guiding us on our mothering journey. Our body, mind and spirit cannot be separated from each other and the challenges that arise through rite of passage need a holistic approach if we are to find healing and strength for our pelvic, menstrual and emotional wellbeing.

Also a practitioner of the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®, Holistic Pelvic Care™ and Holistic Pelvic Energy™ training with Tami Kent. Pregnancy and postpartum body work training with Lynn Schulte at the Institute of Birth Healing

Ep. 10 Empowering Sacred Feminine Visionary Leaders with Avalon Darnesh ~ Blossoming Woman

Avalon, a Midwife of transformation, Empowering Sacred Feminine Visionary Leaders to do their soul work, assisting them to reclaim their wisdom, beauty & power, to weave the threads of life together, clarify purpose and share magical gifts with the world.

It's a long but interesting conversation as we take a deep dive and simultaneously soar high to explore:

- Avalon shares some of the influential life events that have led her to who she is now

- Rites of passage of the feminine from menarche ~ motherhood ~ menopause and how we can optimise these for positive growth, fulfilment and to birth our visions and purpose into the world

- Avalon shares her birth journey's, her experience of a truly heart opening ecstatic birth and how that has inspired her path and to change the current popular & negative narrative that Women so often hear. How this can influence the major transition into Motherhood. In turn I share a little of my story that was quite different* and how while it comes with extra challenges, healing can still occur to embrace this rite of passage fully

- We discuss why it is so important to prioritise finding, expressing and actioning your purpose and gifts in the world. How to strike a balance and find time as a Mother and how you & your family will actually benefit from you doing so

- Our integral connection and role in contributing to and co-creating a sustainable thriving culture

- Sex as a Woman and after Motherhood

- Avalon's ancestral lineage and inspiration from exploring this

Ep. 9 Well Woman Care and the Wisdom of Traditional Postpartum Care Culture with midwife Rachelle Garcia Seliga ~ Innate Traditions

Ep. 9 Well Woman Care and the Wisdom of Traditional Postpartum Care Culture with midwife Rachelle Garcia Seliga ~ Innate Traditions

Rachelle Garcia Seliga's work is dedicated to midwifing a cultural shift- based upon our innate wisdom, personal authority and the sacredness of Life. Working in the field of traditional midwifery care for the past 15 years, Rachelle's work as a ‘midwife’ embraces the original meaning of this word, which is caretaker of women’s health from ‘womb to tomb.’

‘Innate’ is that which is natural and inherent. ‘Traditions’ are those teachings that are passed down from one generation to the next. Our innate physiological design offers us a map to health and wellness. We THRIVE when we follow that which has been laid out for us. Traditional medicinal knowledge is stored within our blood memory, within the Earth, Air, Water and Fire. The more we heal ourselves from the destructive programming we have received, the more -access- we have to this knowledge. It is from these understandings that ‘Innate Traditions’ was born. All of Rachelle's work is dedicated to this Remembrance. Rachelle runs a Holistic Well-Woman Care practice, which tends to the health of our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies.

I have been drawn to Rachelle's work as I feel she has a strong gift at articulating and giving language to these important topics, in turn helping us turn inner knowing into understanding and inspire cultural change through action and embodiment.

We discuss:

  • The traditional wisdom of postpartum care and the importance to reconnect to these practices within the current modern yet dis-functional context.
  • Ancestral grief, the subsequent disconnection from each other, the world we a a part of, the complexities of healing and crucial need to do so
  • The  inherent physiology underlying Rachelle's work, teachings and postpartum care overall. How understanding this allows us to be informed to better nurture Mothers and therefore babies, children and communities at large.
  • The remembrance that while we may feel and act disconnected, we can never actually be disconnected from that which we are inherently a part of.

Rachelle has a Webinar on Ancestral Grief & Ancestral Healing 14th April, MST, that will be 15th April AEST but if you sign up you will receive a recording available for 72hours after webinar.
