Popcorn & Books

By Karter J.

Karter Johnson, a 10yo literacy influencer from Detroit, MI. He is the CEO of Popcorn and Books, his goal is to encourage kids ages 5-10 to read more and to enjoy reading. After receiving a newsletter from the local school stating that if 3rd graders couldn’t read well they would have to repeat the third grade, Karter made it his business to help fight the literacy problem that some kids face and to be there for kids who need someone to read with. Knowing that some parents don't like their kids to watch YouTube, Karter decided to turn his Build A Kid's Library reading show into this podcast.

This book is a book about racial diversity explained in ways that kindergarten students understand. The premise of the book is that people aren't really different skin colors because we are all brown. The teacher would hold her hand over the pages with colored hands on them to show that her skin isn't any of those colors. If we can get young children to NOT see skin in different colors, they can change the future world's mindset.

These are just a few of the affirmations that you will read and explore with your child.   It’s Great to Be Me is perfect for teachers, parents and other caregivers who want to expose the children in their lives to positive thinking, self-love, confidence, and belief in oneself.   Packed with beautiful illustrations and easy to understand affirmations, these inspiring words will surely build on any young child’s confidence.   Have your child repeat all-caps affirmations (I AMs) and then let them enjoy listening to different ways they are special. It is my goal to encourage young girls to find their own voice in the sea of many voices. I want to strengthen young girls to be confident in their decisions and resilient in their efforts. Addy's Journey to her Forever Home by Nichole Schryer

Addy's Journey to her Forever Home by Nichole Schryer

19. Join Karter as he reads Addy's Journey to her Forever Home by Nichole Schryer. Addy’s story is about a 7-year-old girl (Addy) who is also a Porcupine that is removed from her home due to neglect. She goes through various foster homes, some terrible and some just leaving her more alone. As the story goes on you can see her spikes begin to form as she experiences more and more trauma. She ends up at her final foster home that happens to be armadillos. They are hard on the outside to withstand her spikes, but soft on the inside to warm and comfort Addy. They then bring her to therapy where colors more than brown begin to shine.

This story was created to help children in the foster/adopted system provide normalcy and hope for a brighter future. Addy goes through many homes and experiences trauma and loss in so many different ways. However, it is a story that provides resiliency in the face of adversity, and love when it’s hard to see. Follow Addy on her journey to find love and belonging.

Kwaheri Sandy Footprints, Habari Hiking Trails by Deborah Chambers

Kwaheri Sandy Footprints, Habari Hiking Trails by Deborah Chambers

17. Join Karter as he reads Kwaheri Sandy Footprints, Habari Hiking Trails by Deborah Chambers. Likizo is a boy who was born into a biracial family and enjoys sharing his love for exotic foods and adventures with his friends. One day, he learned from his father that his family would be relocating from California to Ohio due to work obligations during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The boy was hesitant to move due to various new changes that suddenly seemed so scary. He knew he would miss being away from his close friends, school, proximity to various beaches, great weather, extracurricular activities, and the wonderful life they were creating in California. The unforeseen future did not seem that exciting especially since it meant that new changes would disrupt his preferred routine. Will things ever be the same in the new home town? Would his new friends in Ohio want to learn more about Africa, his Mama's original homeland, or enjoy a taste of African food that Mama cooks? Will he fit in a small town and make good friends? Read on to find out. These are some of the questions children ask themselves when faced with uncertainties and changes, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The themes represented in this book include friendship, diversity, inclusivity, kindness, value, family, acceptance, generosity, persistence, and growing up. Biracial families will appreciate identifying with similar situations like Likizo's family and will find this book to be a gem in their collection. All families will benefit from learning through the eyes of a child who is being raised in the best of both worlds with African and American heritage while living in a small American town.
