Bonus: Guest Spot on "Stand Up with Pete Dominick, Episode 750"

Bonus: Guest Spot on "Stand Up with Pete Dominick, Episode 750"

Barry had the opportunity to spend some time with the man who introduced him to podcasting, comedian Pete Dominick.

For a dozen years, Pete hosted a fabulous public affairs show on Sirius XM Radio. His unique and humorous perspective on current events coupled with his great long-form interviews made this Barry's primary source of news for many years.

In October 2019, Sirius XM made the awful decision not to renew his contract, due in large part to his resistance to the rehiring of Steve Bannon as a Sirius XM host.

With nowhere else to turn, Pete started his own daily podcast, relying on subscribers as his sole source of income. Shortly afterwards, the COVID-19 pandemic afforded Pete the opportunity to create a weekly social hangout for subscribers. This quickly became an important means of connection for people isolated during the pandemic. This community quickly became a new group of virtual friends from all across the country. As the world has reopened from the pandemic, many of those newfound friends have met in person.

Our podcast has benefited greatly from this community. We have had a number of guests from among the many musicians in this community, and you can spend some time with our new friends, including Jon Carroll, Matt Carlson, and Nick Martino in these episodes:

Bonus: A Christmas Day's Eve! Original Songs by Our Friends

Bonus: Today (with Jon Carroll)

Bonus: R(ank).E.M. Again, Matt Carlson!

Bonus: Friends Are Inclusive (Harborcoat & Bell's Brewery)

Bonus: Guest Spot on "Beer In Front"

Barry and Abigail had the opportunity to sit down with Dave Zalatoris from the Beer In Front podcast! This episode originally dropped on July 31, 2023. We discussed the origin of the Pops on Hops Podcast, shared some of our favorite albums and episodes, and talked about the Florida beer scene. Most importantly, Barry used his "phone a friend" option to solicit an album from Dave, and he selected "11" by The Smithereens. That episode dropped on September 15, 2023, and you can listen to it here.

Bonus: Guest Spot on "What Am I Making Podcast #006"

Bonus: Guest Spot on "What Am I Making Podcast #006"

We had the pleasure of joining our friend, and frequent guest, Matt Carlson on the podcast portion of his new project, What Am I Making, back on March 27, 2023.

Matt is a talented musician and songwriter from East Lansing, Michigan, whom Barry met as part of an online community created by Pete Dominick, the host of the Stand Up With Pete Dominick podcast. During one of their weekly hangouts, Matt shared the name of his latest band, Harborcoat. Barry caught the R.E.M. connection, which led to a Pops on Hops episode to discuss the album Joy is Elusive. The outtakes alone from that conversation also led to a Pops on Hops bonus episode to discuss Matt's Top Five R.E.M. albums. Matt has also contributed songs to our Christmas bonus episodes in both 2021 and 2022.

So, obviously, when Matt asked Abigail and Barry to chat about the Pops on Hops podcast, they jumped at the chance! It is a fabulous discussion of the origin story of the Pops on Hops podcast!

If you want to check out other episodes of the What Am I Making podcast, here are a few of our favorites!

WAIM #044 - Kevin Alexander's Ten Best Albums Of 2023

WAIM #031 - Matty C & Rockin' The Suburbs - Live at The Lost Rhino

A detailed history of Jack’s musical projects and collaborators is available in our episode Bonus: Friendship Wins (Jack Cornell and Tripping Animals Brewing).

Clips shared on this episode are:

  1. Willie Mays by Terry Anderson & The Olympic Ass-Kickin Team (Barry’s favorite song off of National Champions)

Chainsaw Repair Shop debuted on Mojo Nixon’s The Loon in the Afternoon on SiriusXM Outlaw Country.

Striped: Legend of the Green Zebra (Bryan Adams and Hans Zimmer and Founders Brewing Co.)

Barry and Abigail discuss Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (Music from the Original Motion Picture) by Bryan Adams and Hans Zimmer and sample Green Zebra Watermelon, Green Zebra Peach, Green Zebra Pineapple, and Green Zebra Mango from Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Barry revealed that the first song in the end credits of a film is eligible for an Oscar nomination. The David Byrne song This Is a Life that we briefly discussed in Byrned-Again (David Byrne and Lincoln & South Brewing) was nominated based on its presence in the end credits of Every Everything Everywhere All at Once. Barry and Abigail discussed the tendency of Disney animators to recycle various scenes in multiple movies. Watch some examples! Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron was directed by Kelly Asbury, whose monochrome books were staples in the Hummel household when Abigail was a child. Barry entered Get Off My Back into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with Windy by The Association. Don’t Let Go reminded Abigail of the Xanadu soundtrack, particularly Suddenly. Listen to our discussion of Xanadu in our episode Can I Do (Xanadu Soundtrack and English Beers). Run Free reminded Abigail of Stampede, the song played over the wildebeest stampede scene in The Lion King (also composed by Hans Zimmer!). Barry saw zebras “in the wild” at Hearst Castle. The woodwinds in The Long Road Back reminded Abigail of the music of R. Carlos Nakai, a Native American flutist with Navajo-Ute heritage. We Talk. We Drink. We Make Podcasts. (Jason Mraz and Petty Thieves Brewing Co.)

Barry and Abigail discuss We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. by Jason Mraz and sample Lucky Strikes, Echoes of Sacrificial Voices, and Basking In the Glow from Petty Thieves Brewing Co. in Charlotte, North Carolina. We want to thank Barry’s college and medical school colleague, Dr. Michael McCrohan, for helping us obtain this fabulous beer, and for his “contribution to the arts.”

Lucky Strikes is a collaboration with Cabarrus Brewing Co in Concord, North Carolina.

The names of the beers we sampled today reminded Abigail of the names of the beers we sampled at Burial Beer Company in Asheville, North Carolina: Prophetmaker, A Canvas of Fragmented Memoirs, A Space For Sacrilege, and Of A Fading Season. Listen to our full episode at Burial, Consumers of the Barley (The Raconteurs and Burial Beer Co.).

We make a lot of comparisons to Andy Grammer by Andy Grammer, which we reviewed in our episode Mind Your Grammer (Andy Grammer and Deadwords Brewing).

Watch one of the TikToks Abigail referenced poking fun at artists including “raw audio” in their songs. Your Love is My Drug by Kesha is a great example of this phenomenon.

Lucky features Colbie Caillat, whose song I Do appears on our family playlist of favorite love songs from 2011. Abigail’s choice on that playlist was The Bird and the Worm by Owl City, and Barry's was Maybe I'm Amazed by Paul McCartney.

Abigail contends that Butterfly is no more explicit than Swimming In Your Ocean by Crash Test Dummies. Listen to our full discussion of Crash Test Dummies, Pops Shuffled His Feet (Crash Test Dummies and Toll Road Brewing).

Details in the Fabric features James Morrison. We shared a little bit of his song Under the Influence.

This album was submitted to our Virtual Jukebox by Paul Zawacki [The Procession, previously discussed on Musique Marécageuse (The Procession & Swamp Head Brewery) and interviewed on A Dozen Updates (The Procession Reunion Special)].

Oggy is named after Ogopogo, a lake monster said to inhabit Okanagan Lake in British Columbia, Canada.

Listen to Paul’s previous Jukebox episode, Abigail Battles the Pink Goblets (The Flaming Lips).

Read the jambands.com article about MGMT’s performance on the Live on Letterman concert series, which introduced Paul to the band!

Of Moons, Birds & Monsters reminds Abigail in mood and tone of Space Oddity by David Bowie and The Commander Thinks Aloud by The Long Winters. There is a fantastic episode of Song Exploder focused on The Commander Thinks Aloud, which was written about the Space Shuttle Columbia.

Our next Jukebox episode will be Thriller by Michael Jackson, submitted by Todd Sider. This episode is scheduled to drop on September 29, 2023.

Pops Shuffled His Flight (Crash Test Dummies and Toll Road Brewing Company)

Barry and Abigail discuss God Shuffled His Feet by Crash Test Dummies and sample The Crowd Pleaser, Lowest Common Denominator, Mike's, St. Pete Parkour, and Sun Ryes from Toll Road Brewing Company in Ocoee, Florida.

Many thanks to Duane Morin and David Strickland, co-owners and brewers at Toll Road Brewing, for sitting down with us to chat about the history and future of the brewery!

Toll Road features two offerings, Choose Your Own Adventure (a hard seltzer) and Kayfabe (a Berliner Weisse) that can be customized with different flavors using beverage infusions!

Barry recommended Superman’s Song from Crash Test Dummies’ first album, The Ghosts That Haunt Me.

Canities subita, also called Marie Antoinette syndrome or Thomas More syndrome, is an alleged condition of hair turning white overnight due to stress or trauma.

This Los Angeles Times article from April 1994 discusses how the success of Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm as a single drove the success of the entire album.

Mind Your Grammer (Andy Grammer and Deadwords Brewing)

Barry and Abigail discuss Andy Grammer by Andy Grammer and sample Bridge, Proeza, Soft Pivot, and Harvest Moon from Deadwords Brewing in Orlando, Florida.

Many thanks to Jack Henning, brewpub manager at Deadwords Brewing, for sitting down with us to chat about all the fun things going on at the brewery.

Abigail played a sample of Honey, I’m Good. from Grammer’s second album to demonstrate the continuation of the misogyny displayed in his lyrics on this album.

Abigail had her “Let’s Dance” moment with this album. Listen to our episode Let's Drink (David Bowie and Cultured Collective Brewing) to learn what exactly we mean by that!

Flight of the Daft Cow (Béla Fleck and the Flecktones and Daft Cow Brewery)

Barry and Abigail discuss Flight of the Cosmic Hippo by Béla Fleck and the Flecktones and sample The Brangus, Bull Ring, Sour Patch Kegs - Watermelon Sour, and Brambles BlackBerry Hazy IPA from Daft Cow Brewery in Alachua, Florida.

Barry first heard Flight of the Cosmic Hippo on an episode in the third season of Northern Exposure called Jules et Joel.

Barry stunned Abigail with the information that Steve Martin is a GRAMMY-winning banjo player for his album The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo. He has two albums with Edie Brickell, Love Has Come for You and So Familiar.

Abigail heard We Three Kings in Star of the County Down. Béla Fleck and the Flecktones have a Christmas album called Jingle All the Way, but, unfortunately, We Three Kings does not appear on it.

Barry and Abigail discuss The World from the Side of the Moon by Phillip Phillips and sample Sticky Puddles - Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Blissful Ignorance, Unchecked Hedonism, and Polarnattens Paradis from Lupulin Brewing Company in Big Lake, Minnesota.

Barry had previously heard Home when the Florida Panthers used the song in their 2012-2013 fan video.

Jukebox: Francepants (Mutemath and Ginger’s Revenge)

Barry, Abigail, and guest Frances Walton discuss Mutemath by Mutemath and sample Original and Cranberry Herb from Ginger’s Revenge in Asheville, North Carolina. Frances and Barry met as Patreon subscribers of Stand Up! with Pete Dominick, and Frances has appeared on Pete’s show numerous times as part of his special segment “The Hue.” She has also appeared on her brother’s podcast Phrankly Speaking, most recently joining him for a two-part series about Tom Cruise. Friend of the podcast Jon Carroll will be touring with Mary Chapin Carpenter this summer! You may be able to catch Barry and Abigail (and Frances) at the Charlotte show on August 11, 2023! Frances discovered Mutemath at a college concert where they opened for Switchfoot. She purchased the Teleprompt version of the album at the concert. We reviewed the Warner Bros. version. Read about the differences between the two releases. Ginger’s Revenge created a character for each of their four core beers. Meet the band and check out each of their customized Spotify playlists! Abigail heard similarities between this album and Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto. Frances compared the vocals in Collapse to Joga by Björk. The “reverse back masked” music video for Typical reminded Frances of the creativity and artistry of OK Go’s music videos. You can hear more about backmasking in our episode Tripping Walruses (The Beatles & Tripping Animals Brewing Co.) or in the Omnibus entry dedicated to the topic. Frances compared the syncopated drumming of Darren King, Mutemath’s drummer, to the drumming in Take Five (Take Another Five) by Grover Washington, Jr. Abigail got U2 vibes from Plan B; Frances heard elements U2 in Control (she mentioned Elevation as a possible comparison). Barry contributed to his Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music thesis by comparing Control to Times Like These by Foo Fighters. Stall Out reminded Frances of Ride by Bond. Our next Jukebox episode will be Time to Pretend by MGMT, submitted by Paul Zawacki. This episode is scheduled to drop on July 21, 2023. Byrned-Again (David Byrne and Lincoln & South Brewing Company)

Barry and Abigail discuss Uh-Oh by David Byrne and sample Wheel Man, Afterglow, and Island Drive from Lincoln & South Brewing Company in Hilton Head Island, Florida.

Barry and Abigail spoke briefly about Renée Richards while discussing Now I’m Your Mom. Renée is a transgender woman who competed professionally in tennis in the 1970s. She also fought and won a landmark case in transgender rights in the New York Supreme Court after being barred from numerous women’s tennis competitions in 1976 for refusing to take a genetic test to verify her chromosomes. Barry recalled Renée’s story as being one of the first instances of widespread media coverage of transgender issues.

Abigail heard vague similarities between Girls on My Mind and various songs from The RaconteursConsolers of the Lonely (most notably Old Enough).

David Byrne performed at the Oscars for his nominated co-written song from Everything Everywhere All at Once, This Is a Life. Read more about the performance.

Dorks on Corks: The Winey Imposters (The Masked Marauders and Island Grove Wine Company)

Barry and Abigail discuss The Masked Marauders by The Masked Marauders and sample Blueberry Moscato and Sunshine State Berry Sangria from Island Grove Wine Company in Hawthorne, Florida.

Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry’s condition.

Abigail first learned of this “prank” album from the Ridiculous Crime episode The Battlin' Fleetwood Macs. The Masked Marauders band was made up of members from the Cleanliness and Godliness Skiffle Band. Chicken on a Unicycle has an amazing illustration of the genealogy and history of these two bands.

Read the original fake review of The Masked Marauders that appeared in Rolling Stone on October 18, 1969!

Abigail shared that she recently watched Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, which has a similar backstory to that of The Masked Marauders. The Wikipedia entry for the movie and the original Funny or Die trailer that inspired the movie are both worth a look. You can watch the film for free on The Roku Channel!

I Can’t Get No Nookie, featuring a Mick Jagger impersonator, frequently gets mislabeled as an outtake from The Rolling StonesJamming with Edward sessions.

The version of I Am the Japanese Sandman (Rang Tang Ding Dong) that appears on The Masked Marauders is a cover of The Cellos’ Rang Tang Ding Dong (I Am the Japanese Sandman) (and includes the same racist music and lyrics). In trying to locate the origins of the song, we also played Paul Whiteman’s The Japanese Sandman (instrumental) and Nora BayesThe Japanese Sandman (with lyrics).

Bonus: A Christmas Day’s Eve (Original Holiday Songs by Friends of the Podcast)

We are excited to share this bonus episode with all of you. Several musicians who have appeared on the podcast or will be making their debut in early 2023 were kind enough to share their Christmas greetings… and their Christmas songs… for our Pops on Hops fans! Some of these are older songs, and some were recorded specifically for this episode.

First up is “The Christmas Song” performed by Connie and Nick Martino (feat. Daphne Martino). Nick will be joining us next season to discuss his work with New York Funk Exchange.

Our second entry is from Matt Carlson of Harborcoat. Matt produced a new Christmas single for 2022, a cover of Valley Winter Song by Fountains of Wayne. Listen to Matt’s interview in our episode Friends are Inclusive.

Up next is Jack Cornell, who shared an old Olympic Ass-Kicking Team song, “Christmas on the Faces.” Listen to Jack’s interview in our episode Friendship Wins.

Rounding out our special is a song by Grammy-winning artist Jon Carroll, formerly of Starland Vocal Band. Jon shared his recording of Going Home For Christmas, a song he has long played at the Annual Jingle Jam Concerts in Leesburg, Virginia, to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Listen to Jon’s interview in our episode Today (With Jon Carroll).

We will see everybody when season three begins in March 2023. We will kick things off with a discussion of Xanadu by ELO, submitted to our Virtual Jukebox by Greg Jong of The Procession. This episode will be released on March 3, 2023.

A Sampler Platter (The Platters and Christmas Beers)

It’s time for “Pop’s Pop on Pops on Hops!” Barry, Abigail, and special guest Barry Hummel, Sr. (Barry’s pop and Abigail’s pop-pop) discuss A Christmas Album by The Platters and sample three Christmas beers: Merry Monkey from Victory Brewing Company in Downingtown, Pennsylvania; St. Nikolaus Bock from Penn Brewery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Peppermint Porter from Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. in Lexington, Kentucky.

Barry put in a plug for A History of Rock Music in 500 SongsEpisode 31: “Only You” by the Platters.

Barry, Sr.’s favorite song by The Platters is My Prayer, as canonized in our series of Hummel family favorites albums. (His favorite Christmas song is The Greatest Gift of All by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.)

Barry loves The Beach Boys’ version of Auld Lang Syne. The Platters included a version of For Auld Lang Syne on their original Christmas record.

The Platters appeared multiple times on American Bandstand, music-performance and dance television program that aired in various versions from 1952 to 1989. Watch their Bandstand performance from 1959 and their Bandstand interview from 1967.

Twisted Tasters (Tori Amos and Twisted Trunk Brewing)

Barry and Abigail discuss Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos and sample Gardens Gold, Papa Pump, and Beer:30 from Twisted Trunk Brewing in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Before her solo career, Amos was in a band called Y Kant Tori Read. Their eponymous debut album was a commercial failure and the band disbanded shortly after. However, Amos still had to comply with her six-record contract. Early versions of Little Earthquakes were rejected by the record company before the album was reworked with a new producer and eventually released.

Bonus: Pink Floyd Leftovers (Pink Floyd and brewLAB)

Barry, Abigail, and special guest Jeff “Jafo” Shettler discuss some Pink Floyd songs and some beers that were “left over” after Jafo’s Jukebox episode, Wish There Were Beer. We sample Uncertainty Reigns and Sweet Zombie Jesus from brewLAB in Carpinteria, California, as well as one of Jafo’s own homebrew creations, Ukrainian Imperial Stout.

At the time of recording, Wish There Were Beer was tied for our fifth-most-listened-to episode.

Tracks we discuss include Hey Hey Rise Up, a single featuring Andriy Khlyvnyuk of Ukrainian band BoomBox. The vocals are lifted from a viral video of “Khlyvnyuk singing Oi u luzi chervona kalyna (Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow)”, a Ukrainian patriotic march written in 1914 to honor the Sich Riflemen. Proceeds from the single support the charitable organization Ukraine Humanitarian Fund.

We also discuss When the Tigers Broke Free and What Shall We Do Now?, two tracks that appear in the film Pink Floyd: The Wall but do not appear on the album The Wall by Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd, the main character in Pink Floyd: The Wall was played by Bob Geldof of The Boomtown Rats. He later wrote Do They Know It’s Christmas? by Band Aid and organized the Live Aid concert held simultaneously in London, England, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Chats About Beer (Maroon 5 and Brewery Leftovers)

Barry and Abigail discuss Songs About Jane by Maroon 5 and sample “leftover” beers from previously reviewed breweries: Eau Melon from Intracoastal Brewing Company in Melbourne, Florida; Fall Shakecation from Mastry’s Brewing Co. in St. Pete Beach, Florida; and Double Vanilla Scoop Shake from 3 Sons Brewing Co. in Dania Beach, Florida.

Abigail and Barry recognized similarities in the stories told in This Love and Twice as Hard by The Black Crowes.

Abigail compared the chorus of The Sun to some of the lyrics in What I Did For Love from the musical A Chorus Line.

The imagery in Must Get Out reminded Abigail of Love Comes Tumbling Down by Matt Nathanson.

Barry and Abigail discuss Hindu Love Gods by Hindu Love Gods and sample Porch Pineapple, ...and There's Your BFF, Enough Space - Collab With Hilton Head Island Coffee Roasters, and Rocket Emoji from Side Hustle Beer Company in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Hindu Love Gods was a side project of Bill Berry, Peter Buck, and Mike Mills of R.E.M. with Warren Zevon (whose most famous song is Werewolves of London).

This album contains a cover of Battleship Chains, a song written by Terry Anderson for The Woodpeckers. We covered this story in detail during our interview with Jack Cornell, Friendship Wins (Jack Cornell and Tripping Animals Brewing). The Woods’ recording of Battleship Chains is not available on the internet, but The Georgia Satellitesrecording is.

Bonus: Today (with Jon Carroll)

Barry, Abigail, and special guest Jon Carroll (Starland Vocal Band) discuss Jon’s musical past, present, and future and review three of his recent singles: Today (Not Tomorrow), (You Gotta) Stand Up!, and Rich Man’s Daughter.

Jon and Barry met in the wonderful Patreon community of Stand Up! with Pete Dominick.

Jon recalled some of his favorite tracks from his youth: Mahalia Jackson’s If I Can Help Somebody and The Chimes’ Let Your Hair Down, and the track that made his mother appreciate soul music: Brook Benton’s Rainy Night in Georgia. Jon also remembers where he was the first time he ever heard Dire StraitsMoney For Nothing.

Jon suggested we listen to Harry Nilsson’s Nilsson Sings Newman… so we added it to our Virtual Jukebox!

Barry and Abigail discuss Shake Your Money Maker by The Black Crowes and sample Nefarious Nebulas, Norwegian Wizard Crisis, I Ain’t Afraid of No Roast, Sourmanjaro, and The Desert Spoon from Deviant Wolfe Brewing in Sanford, Florida.

This album reminds Barry of 70s Rolling Stones albums such as Exile on Main Street (you might know Happy), Beggars Banquet, and Let It Bleed, as well as the single Bitch. Barry introduced Abigail to a new genre term, roadhouse blues, encapsulated by The Doors’ song Roadhouse Blues.

The Black Crowes originated as Mr. Crowe’s Garden, a name based on Johnny Crow’s Garden, a children’s book written and illustrated by Leonard Leslie Brooke.

Ageusia is the loss of the sense of taste.

Barry, Abigail, and third-time guest Zachary Hummel, brother to Abigail and son to Barry, discuss Under Pressure by Logic and sample Burton’s Best, Seaside Sour, Windtalker, Baltic Porter, and Brew Club 9th Anniversary Ale from Community Brewhouse in Sanford, Florida.

Many thanks to Gary Holmes and Aaron Libera, Co-Owners of Community Brewhouse, for sitting down with us to discuss the fascinating story behind Community Brewhouse and the Sanford Homebrew Shop.

Zach has seen Logic twice, once on the Bobby Tarantino vs. Everybody Tour in Tampa (setlist), and once on the Confessions of a Dangerous Mind tour in Orlando (setlist).

Zach noted that Under Pressure contains a sample from Eazy-Duz-It by Eazy-E.

These lyrics deserve your attention. We got a lot of the information shared on this episode from the Genius annotations for each song.

Bonus: Niagara Triangulation (Becker Brewing Co.)

Due to a scheduling issue, we had to delay our regular music episode this week! We should be able to drop it next Friday, but we didn’t want to leave the regular listeners hanging! So… Barry, Abigail, and a few extra guests sample Almond Cherry Cider, Concord Grape Cider, Summerset Shandy, and Becker Farms Raspberry Wheat from Becker Brewing Co. in Gasport, New York, from their AirBNB in Niagara, New York, mid-family vacation.

Follow Def Poppa Gaming, Zach’s YouTube channel. Learn the meaning of def.

Darby “Momma Darbs” Sider previously appeared on Bar'nSider (Paul Simon & Barn Door Ciderworks), recorded on our last family vacation to Asheville, North Carolina. On that trip, we enjoyed cider both from Barn Door Ciderworks in Fletcher, North Carolina, and from Urban Orchard Cider in Asheville.

Abigail’s favorite wine is Creekbend Catawba from Oliver Winery and Vineyards in Bloomington, Indiana.

Ziggy Barley (Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers and Walking Tree Brewery)

Barry and Abigail discuss Conscious Party by Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers and sample Franz With Benefits, Daily Chores, Grass and Flower Series, Nitro Babycakes, and Your Roots Are Showing from Walking Tree Brewery in Vero Beach, Florida.

Special thanks to Mike Malone, Head Brewer of Walking Tree Brewery, and his son JT, for sitting down with us to discuss the history of the brewery!

Babycakes won gold in the oatmeal stout category at the 2021 Great American Beer Festival.

JT met Ziggy Marley at a fundraiser for Ocean Research and Conservation, Inc. (ORCA), a Fort Pierce-based organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of aquatic ecosystems and the species they sustain.

The lyrics on this album are deeply steeped in the Rastafarian religion and the Wikipedia article on Rastafari is worth a read.

Barry recommends The Imbalanced History of Rock and Roll’s episode on Bob Marley & The Wailers: Kingston To The World.

How to Rate a Beer (The Fray and Pareidolia Brewing Co.)

How to Rate a Beer (The Fray and Pareidolia Brewing Co.)

Barry and Abigail discuss How to Save a Life by The Fray and sample Mel's Gold Ale, 32958 Hazy IPA, Dubbeldolia, Slow Paddle Porter, and Voluntold Oatmeal Stout from Pareidolia Brewing Co. in Sebastian, Florida.

Special thanks to Pete Anderson, Co-Owner and Head Brewer of Pareidolia Brewing Co., for sitting down with us to discuss the history of the brewery!

Mel’s Gold Ale is named for Mel Fisher, a world-famous American treasure-hunter. Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum is located just up the street from Pareidolia in Sebastian.

Sales of Knee Deep in Peaches Smash Beer raised money for StacheStrong, an organization that supports brain cancer research. Knee Deep in Peaches was also a collaboration with Waycross, Georgia, band The Pine Box Dwellers. The band designed the beer’s logo and can art.

When Barry was recently in Asheville, North Carolina, he visited White Labs Brewing Co., who are known for brewing beers of nearly identical recipes, only altering the yeast, to produce noticeable differences in flavor and aroma.

How to Save a Life was once certified as the best-selling digital album of all time at the time, beating the record previously held by Coldplay’s X&Y.

Abigail saw The Fray live at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, California, in July 2007.

Slow Paddle Porter was modeled after Deschutes Brewery’s Black Butte Porter.

The Twosome Drinking Spree (John Cougar Mellencamp and Mastry’s Brewing Co.)

Barry and Abigail discuss The Lonesome Jubilee by John Cougar Mellencamp and sample Just Like Old Times, Spring Shake-Cation, Acai Juliet, and Ambient #7 from Mastry’s Brewing Co. in St. Pete Beach, Florida.

Many thanks to Matt Dahm, Owner-Founder of Mastry’s Brewing Co., for sitting down with us to discuss the history of the brewery!

Although she did not visit the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly about Music this time, Abigail did hear similarities between The Real Life and Light the Fuse by Jack Cornell [previously interviewed on Friendship Wins (Jack Cornell and Tripping Animals Brewing Co.)]. The message of the song and the specificity of the storytelling reminded Barry of Growing Older But Not Up by Jimmy Buffett.

Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes is reminiscent of an O. Henry tale.

Ambient #7 is brewed with hops grown by the UF/IFAS Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Wimauma, Florida.
