The Bonus Army from Portland to D.C.
In the summer of 1932, during the great depression, approximately 17,000-25,0009 U.S. World War I veterans, their families and affiliated groups marched to Washington, D.C for a peaceful protest. This was the Bonus Army- they gathered from all around the country to demand an early cash redemption of their service certificates.
The story of the bonus army underscores the power of grassroots organizing- and what happens when people come together to fight for justice. In this podcast we'll dive into the origins of the Bonus Army, learn exactly what it was they were demanding all while painting a clear picture of the political, social and economic circumstances of the times. We’ll also explore the systemic changes that followed the actions of the Bonus Army and examine the US government's handling of the veteran activists. All this and more on Popular Education Radio!

The Battle at Adwa: African Triumph Against Colonialism
In this episode, we delve into the Battle of Adwa, fought on March 1, 1896, between the Ethiopian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy. Despite being vastly outgunned, the Ethiopian forces were able to successfully repel the Italian colonialists, defending their independence and sovereignty. We discuss the roots of the conflict, including the Scramble for Africa, the Berlin Conference, and the Treaty of Wuchale. We explore the impacts of the Battle of Adwa on modern anti-fascist movements, pan-Africanism, black and African solidarity, and anti-imperialist resistance. We also highlight the ongoing issues of poverty, conflict, and inequality in Africa that stem from European colonialism. In this interview Richard speaks about how the Covid 19 pandemic has been affecting the Israeli and Palestinian populations in the region. We talk about the health disparities, how this virus is being monetized by governments and we also talk about Israeli politics and a possible 4th election!

Don't Ask Don't Tell- Nathaniel Boehme
This week on Popular Education Radio: Nathaniel Boehme (he/him/his) is an LGBTQ Veteran, activist, and social worker. Boehme has served over 18 years in the U.S. Air Force and was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Today we'll talk about the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy. The DADT policy was established by Clinton in 1993 and stated that LGB service members are allowed to serve as long as they did not disclose their sexual orientation, or openly speak of homosexual relationships including marriages or other familial attributes while serving in the United States armed forces. On September 20, 2011 the Obama Administration repealed this policy but unfortunately as we find out in this episode, change takes time. Today Nathaniel will share his experiences.
Currently, Nathaniel is an active service member at the Portland Air National Guard and in 2017, he was the first in Oregon and Washington to participate in a Pride parade in uniform with his Command’s approval. To read about Nathaniel's work or contact him please go to: www.nathanielboehme.com

The Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) was founded by Tipper Gore, wife of Senator and later Vice President Al Gore; Susan Baker, wife of Treasury Secretary James Baker; Pam Howar, wife of Washington realtor Raymond Howar; and Sally Nevius, wife of former Washington City Council Chairman John Nevius.
On September 19, 1985 members of PMRC, known as the "Washington Wives" attended a Senate hearing. During the hearing Frank Zappa. Dee Snider and John Denver testified against the Recording Industry Association of America's decision to place a “Parental Advisory” sticker on album.

Jomo Kenyatta and Huey P. Newton
Kenyatta was one of the leaders who liberated Kenya from British Rule. He was a political activist, who traveled to the U.K. to protest the mistreatment of the Kikuyu people (ethnic group in Kenya) and all Kenyans.
He presented his case to Parliament but soon learned that he had to get within the system in order to change it. Once Kenya was liberated, Kenyatta become the first President (although he was PM while Kenya was under British Rule.) Popular for his progressiveness, vision and four wives, Kenyatta coined the term "Harambee" which still the phrase used for community.
On August 22nd 1989, the founding fathers of the Black Panthers, Huey P. Newton dies in Oakland after being shot by a rival organization. Huey stood up against oppression and formed the Black Panthers Self Defense organization to inform black people of their rights and education black people all together.

Interview with Mohamed Alyajouri
In this episode Mohamed share the story of his family members that are still suffering in Yemen as a result of the current warfare. Mohamed speaks about the efforts to help his immediate family and the displacement of many others in the process of finding a safe haven.
Mohamed is originally from Yemen and currently lives in the Portland area where he manages two OHSU healthcare clinics.
