Spenser Reich, ACE, Shares How A Love for Storytelling Led Her to Film & TV Editing
In this phenomenal conversation with editor Spenser Reich, ACE, we learn how this early science enthusiast came to be a film and TV editor on series like STARZ's Power Book IV: Force and Power Book II: Ghost. Spenser proudly reps the South Bay, San Jose, and it was actually the conversations Spenser's parents made a point to have after going to the cinema when Spenser was young that may have offered an early inkling at what would become a professional interest. About the age of 17 or 18, she decided that she wanted to become a filmmaker because of a strong love for storytelling. After moving to LA for film school and through a process of deduction, she arrived at an interest solidly focused on editing, coming to recognize the adoration as a 'love thing.' When it comes to Black women editors, at that time, she was only familiar with one, a previous Post In Black guest, the great Terilyn Shropshire. Spenser notes there's a specialness in what Black editors and filmmakers capture, bringing honest experiences into their work, mentioning Spike Lee, Boots Riley and Ryan Coogler. Having edited features and episodic TV, we talk about her approach to working within both and whether or not it depends on the genre. Spenser talks about why organization is key in the editing space as well as the power of being able to work effectively in a collaborative setting with other people and why dedication to the work is so necessary. We talk the importance of building a community and helping others within the scope of networking and why Spenser says it's her mission statement. Some of her credentials include Diarra from Detroit for Paramount+, whose executive producers are Kenya Barris and Diarra Kilpatrick, which premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, the film, SAMSON, which won the Audience Award for Narrative Feature Film at the 2023 Asian American International Film Festival and the series, Physics Girl for PBS. Stay tuned for more episodes of Post In Black's fourth season as we continue to amplify the stories and experiences of Black professionals working in post-production. Award-winning Film & TV composer, Dara Taylor Talks Music, Movies and Her Latest Film, Strays
On this episode of Post In Black, we talk movies and music with film and TV composer, Dara Taylor. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, Dara grew up a little outside of Buffalo. We talk about how, between both of her parents, there was a mutual love of music that found its way to her. Hence, she thought every home had a 'record room.' Her mother, a church choir director, was the first person to teach her about music arrangement and instrumentation. So, how did Dara go from being a computer science major to composing for her latest project, the feature film, Strays? We get into it as well as the 'aha moment' when she decided that music in film and television was the adventure she was destined to take. In this really great and expanding conversation, Dara shares advice for those interested in film and TV composing. We get her perspective on starting out in the industry, navigating it through relationships and rejections, and the comedy, Strays, starring Jamie Foxx and Will Ferrell. Dara was nominated for a Society of Composers and Lyricists Award in 2023 for The Invitation. Her credentials include Tender Bar, directed by George Clooney, The Noel Diary, HBO Max's Little Ellen, Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar, Curious George: Cape Ahoy, Amazon's The Boys Presents: Diabolical, American Refugee, Echo Boomers and both Netflix series, Bookmarks and Trial By Media. From Silicon Valley to Hollywood, Composer Jongnic Bontemps talks new Transformers Movie and More
Just like a timeless melody, our conversation with composer Jongnic Bontemps, whose latest project is Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, was an unforgettable one. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Jongnic's musical journey began at an early age with a simple request. His mother really wanted to hear an organ in the house. The piano soon became Jongnic's best friend while his exploration grew to include performing in bands. Because the journey of a creative is often sinuous, we talk about how he ended up heading to Yale University to become a lawyer and after another pivot, landed what ended up to be a 15 year career in tech. He became one of a few Black chief technology officers in Silicon Valley until he heard a calling from a much higher source. We talk in-depth about the journey from law to music to software development and ultimately the world of post-production as he's composed for over 50 projects. We discuss the beauty of making and maintaining connections with other creators and the purposeful sustainability it can bring, which led Jongnic to composing for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. His impressive credentials include projects like, The Land, United Skates, Boomerang (TV series), The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel, Sharia, My Name Is Pauli Murray, Godfather of Harlem, Creed II, The Secret Life of Pets, Unbroken, The Imitation Game, Godzilla, Carrie and the video games, Call of Duty: WWII and Redfall. On this exciting new episode, we have the pleasure of chatting with Renard T. Jenkins, President of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers who's also the Senior Vice President of Production Integration & Creative Technology Services for Warner Bros. Discovery. Discussing the responsibilities within the role, we learn that it's both massive and multi-functional. With over 30 years in radio, film and television, Renard's early academic interest was in marine biology. Model-turned-Editor, Kat McAuley Talks Post-Production & Taking Risks
We were finally able to sit down with editor Kat McAuley, founder of Kemco TV & Film Productions, whose credits include Snowfall, Better Things, Twenties, BMF, Chicago Fire, The Nun, Black Lightning, Underground and The Amazing Race. As you'll see, it's been something we've been wanting to happen for a long time now and this conversation truly did not disappoint. This episode is so illustrative in many ways as to how magic happens when people, especially creatives, step outside of the bounds, take chances and in turn, find themselves in good company.
Kat's career in editing didn't start in post-production, it began in modeling and acting in New York City, although she's from Portland, Maine. It was an early encounter with Leander Sales, (Leander's a season one guest of Post In Black) that got her interested in post-production.
We really get to delve into the nuances that help make one successful in the industry and talk about why helping Black people get into post-production is an objective Kat has made a part of her life's work. We also get to talk about taking risks and how that created Kat's chance encounter with Prince, how she met Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese and more notables and why you should tell your heroes when you meet them, why you love them.

Animation Editor, Calvin O’Neal Jr. Discusses How Defaulting Loans and a Tax Credit Got Him an Oscar
The director, producer and editor always had a love for film and pursued his dreams at a film school in Chicago. But defaulting loans due to the recession in 2008 forced him to leave Columbia College Chicago, and he and his family moved from his hometown on the outskirts of Detroit to Shreveport, La. Far away from his comfort zone, Calvin forged a unique way into the post-production industry. Taking advantage of Louisiana’s tax credit, Calvin would have an opportunity to cut his teeth on multiple independent films and participate in an assistant editing class that would shift his trajectory and put him on the path to joining the team who edited the Academy Award-winning animated short, The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore. Since then, he has edited several Emmy Award-winning branded content pieces such as Chipotle’s The Scarecrow, and Dolby Laboratories’ Silent & Radio Flyer’s Taking Flight. Most recently, Calvin’s ability to pivot and consistency in the following up moved him west to Los Angeles, where he would serve as the Editor for Disney+’s critically acclaimed reboot of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. Editor, Producer, Writer Ri-Karlo Handy on Success, Diversity and Giving Back
Having began his career in the entertainment industry at the early age of 14, writer, producer and editor, Ri-Karlo Handy's pathway into post-production is largely due to a television production class offered at his school while he was in the ninth grade. This early learning opportunity gave him the skills he needed to jump-start a professional path. Sadly, those programs lost funding and weren't even in existence a decade later.
In this conversation, Ri-Karlo talks about his early beginnings directing music videos. He's worked with artists, Too $hort, En Vogue and E-40 and later directed music videos for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Mack 10, Master P and many more. It was at the age of 22, during the reality TV boom, that he began editing for television.
Ri-Karlo's currently the showrunner on the series NBC's Play It Forward: Harlem Globetrotters and just recently signed a deal with A3 Artists Agency. He's executive produced for Making of a Black Tech Company, Greenwood: When Finance meets Literacy, Hope Village and Saints & Sinners, which he also created. While having edited for the series Love Island, MTV Floribama Shore, Jersey Shore Family Vacation, Hell's Kitchen and College Hill, this is just a short list of a wider, broader professional career, as he's the CEO of his own multi-platform media company, Sunwise Media.
He attributes his 'secret sauce' as an editor to having grown up in Germany and then moving to Oakland, California and also discusses a pivotal moment sparked by his message in a private Facebook group that read, “I NEED AN EDITOR,” adding, “Looking for black Union editors, please DM” which went viral and led to a firestorm of reaction that prompted a larger, bigger discussion around diversity in the industry. It also led to his creation of Handy Foundation, a nonprofit whose apprenticeship level training aids many in job placement for positions in film and television. The nonprofit recently partnered with the California Film Commission. The training program's diversity initiative is to help create a more accessible pathway into the industry.

Peabody Award-winning editor, Dominique Ulloa, founder and chair of Ujima Entertainment Coalition, takes us on an awe-inspiring and brilliant journey as she shares how her unconventional pathway into post-production led her to creating her own company. Editor & Director James D. Wilcox, ACE, on How His Fascination with Storytelling Led Him to Working with Ron Howard
We learn that it was a series of ambitions and dreams that didn't happen, that helped steer James D. Wilcox, ACE, into a vastly successful career as an editor and director. Hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and later, going on to attend Clark Atlanta University, James secured a series of internships that helped usher him into a career as a news editor. It was at that moment that James insists that editing found him and he later relocated to California.
In this conversation, James talks about what it was like coming from Pittsburgh and having no linkage to Hollywood and yet, his journey led him to work with legendary director, Ron Howard and edit projects like Genius and Hillbilly Elegy. We get to discuss his latest film, also directed by Ron Howard, called Thirteen Lives, based on the real-life international story about a group of young soccer players and their coach who were rescued after being trapped for over two weeks in an underground cave in Thailand after a massive flood. James' other credits include My Wife and Kids, Soul Food, Dark Angel, Everybody Hates Chris, Reno 911!, CSI: Miami, Roots (2016) and Raising Dion.
James has also worked with James Cameron, Mario Van Pebbles and Damon Wayans and is also a member of the Directors Guild of America and on the diversity committee of the Motion Picture Editors Guild.
Jesse Dodd, ADR and Foley Re-Recording Mixer Discusses Decades-Long Career in Hollywood
Born and raised in South Central, Los Angeles, ADR and Foley Re-Recording Mixer, Jesse Dodd has an astonishingly long list of credits that span decades. The California State University, Northridge grad's earliest projects were huge films, The Bodyguard and Thelma and Louise. Later on, Jesse's body of work expanded to include Abbott Elementary, Hacks, Bel-Air, Nope, Angelyne, Interview with the Vampire, Us, Black Panther, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, P-Valley, How to Get Away with Murder, Jurassic World and more.
From an early age, Jesse knew all along that the entertainment industry was an area of interest. Couple that with the inherent desire to 'pull things apart and put them back together again,' Jesse self-describes as a tinkerer, hence the perfect combo for the vast arena that is post-production.
During this interview, we cover technical aspects of ADR and what a foley mixer does, including how the pandemic ushered in a whole range of expanded and accessible technologies. We discuss older and newer barriers of entry and ways around those barriers for those interested in the work as well as the lack of people of color in these kind of post-production roles and why awareness is crucial.
Emmy-nominated Supervising Sound/ADR Editor Bobbi Banks Talks About Her Extensive Hollywood Career
Supervising Sound and ADR Editor Bobbi Banks' extensive career working in post-production in the entertainment industry has spanned 3 decades and her credits include over 120 films and series, like The Batman, Women of the Movement, Coming 2 America (2021), Coming to America (1998), Men in Black: International, The Best Man Holiday, The Incredible Hulk and Ghost Rider. For her work on “When They See Us,” Bobbi was Emmy-nominated in 2019 and she's also the past president of the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE).
On this episode of Post In Black, we discuss the technical side of ADR (automatic dialogue replacement). Bobbi also shares how her journey started as an assistant to the executive assistant at Sound One in New York and how a subsequent series of experiences and opportunities led her to where she is today. While she credits the film Desperately Seeking Susan as her introduction into sound, she also talks about how the motivation for what she does lies heavily in wanting the audience to feel what they're watching through sound.
Emmy-winning Sound Designer/Re-recording Mixer, Ken Johnson Talks About His Musical Journey
On this episode of Post In Black, we talk to 3x Emmy-winning sound designer and re-recording mixer, Ken Johnson, whose credits include Netflix's First Kill, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, Bigger, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Black Lightning, American Soul, The Quad, It, Ballers, Mission: Impossible III, The Amityville Horror and a long list of eclectic films and series that span decades.
During this conversation, Ken shares how his love of music at an early age and the technical side of it, manifested into an expansive career in the sound and mixing aspect of post-production. In 2005, out of frustration in feeling limited by what the industry was offering him as far as opportunities, Ken started his own company, Artistry In Sound, Southern California's only Black-owned post sound facility.
Dig into this conversation! Also, nestled within is valuable advice to those who might feel that talent and talent alone will unlock access in the entertainment industry and how Ken's company is doing what it can to help the post-production space in Hollywood be more inclusive.

Hoorae's "What Say What?!" EP & Editor Discuss Their International Editing Process
Rare that you get two powerhouses in one episode but we managed. We got to chat with two multi-hyphenates about how they began working together in post-production despite being continents apart. Their pathways into filmmaking and editing are different but that didn't deter them from still managing to work together for the first time on “What Say What?!”, a wildly popular YouTube Originals series, executive produced by Issa Rae's HOORAE Media company and Zero Fatigue, a collective and music label founded by Smino.
Director, cinematographer, creative producer and editor, Jeredon O'Conner is a Howard University grad from Memphis, Tennessee. While at Howard, the wealth of academic and artistic creativity in film and fine arts helped drive Jeredon to push the envelope of creativity inside and outside of class especially when it came to celebrating and uplifting Black voices and artistry.
Hailing from Houston, Texas, Life Garland's journey into film began when he moved to Hollywood after graduating from high school. Purely by a sort of hard knocks education coupled with unwavering ambition, he became a production assistant at Propaganda Films working alongside the likes of David Fincher, Antoine Fuqua and Michael Bay.
In this conversation we talk about how it was that Life was later approached by Jeredon for “What Say What?!” while living in Australia and how the catalyst of it all was out of a need to employ Black professionals in post-production in a way that's reflective of what is lacking. The two share insightful tips for inspiring editors and much more.
