In today's episode, we sit down with Professor LaKisha Brown to discuss the historical implications of trauma on Black people and their relationships. LaKisha is a Historian, Researcher, Certified Sales Funnel Copywriter, Copyeditor, & Writer. Her expertise in history contributes to the conversation on Black people and intergenerational trauma and the historical implications. 

The effects of trauma on Black people and their relationships is one of the most under-researched subjects in psychology. Psychological trauma is defined as a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that is outside the range of usual human experience. Traumatic events are invasive experiences that are sudden, violent, overwhelming, and cause feelings of helplessness. The damaging effect of traumas is frequently attributed to the actions of other people like physical or sexual assault, unexpected natural disasters, or war.

Coming to terms with the historical impacts of trauma on Black peoples' lives and relationships has a direct correlation with being able to experience healing in order to have healthy relationships. 

For at least five generations and often beyond, trauma has followed the black population of America. This has created a common thread of fight or flight, a survival mechanism that underlies the psychology of many Black individuals and communities. Ask yourself this question: How did slavery or racism affect your current relationships and your life in general?
