Episode 53 – Third Week Throwback: Blessings
On the third week of each month in 2020 this podcast will include music from my previously recorded albums based on a particular theme. This month the focus is on God’s provision and how He blesses us in so many ways, even ways in which we sometimes don’t see, or think are not blessings because they may be causing pain in the moment. We don’t always see what God is doing in our lives in the moment, but if we trust Him we can be assured that eventually we will see the blessing that flows so freely from the “fountain of life.” This episode includes: 1. Forget Not All His Benefits (from previous podcast) 2. Willowherb—The Healer (from Flowers) 3. There is a Balm (from Prayerful Improvisations) 4. Fountain of Life (from Prayerful Improvisations 2) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 52 – Trust
On the second week of each month in 2020 this podcast will feature new original improvisations based on a thematic idea. This month the music is focused on trust. It can be difficult to trust someone or believe in something when we’ve been hurt. But God promises to always be with us (“Emmanuel” = God with us) even in the difficult times. And while it may be easy for us to put the blame on God and turn away in distrust, God reminds us that “in quietness and trust is our strength” and He can be One to trust since He never goes back on His Word. I hope you can put your trust in the Lord today, even if it seems far beyond your capacity. Trust Him to help you trust! This episode includes: 1. In Quietness and Trust – Isaiah 30:15 (new) 2. All Might Believe –John 1:7 (new) 3. Trust in the Lord – Proverbs 3:5 (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

I pray these musical meditations fill your soul with the “brightest and best of the stars” and give you peace in His presence. This episode includes: 1. Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence (new) 2. Brightest and Best of the Stars (new) 3. Songs of Thankfulness and Praise (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

This is the 50th episode of the Prayerful Improvisations Podcast and I am so grateful for all who have listened and supported this effort during 2019. I hope you’ll continue to listen in 2020 and be blessed by the music and sacred space created here. To close out the year I have included music this week that features additional instrumentation along with the piano, featuring guest musicians Tristan J. Butler on clarinet and Lindsey Sherman on flute. Enjoy and have a blessed New Year! This episode includes: 1. O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (from Prayerful Improvisations: Christmas) 2. Episode 48 - Silent Night
“Silent night, Holy night, all is calm, all is bright.” While this classic Christmas carol depicts a possible night when Jesus was born, it’s also an excellent picture of a healthy lifestyle. Take time to be silent and honor the One who is Holy above all else, and we will experience calm amidst chaos and light amidst darkness. “Silent Night, Holy Night; Mindful of mankind's plight, The Lord in Heav'n on high decreed From earthly woes we would be freed! Jesus, God's promise for peace. Jesus, God's promise for peace.” Amen. This episode includes: 1. O Holy Night (from Prayerful Improvisations: Christmas) 2. Hope Assured (from Notes of Comfort: Hope) 3. Come Let Us Adore Him (new) 4. Silent Night (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 47 - Winter
Winter can be bleak for many of us. I’m the first to admit it’s not my favorite time of year. But Christina Rossetti’s poem reminds us that even during the coldest and darkest times in our lives, there is hope—hope in a God who promises “Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18). If you are in a cold and dark place in your life right now, I pray you find solace and joy in the God who loves you more than you can imagine. This episode includes: 1. In the Bleak Midwinter (from Prayerful Improvisations: Christmas) 2. Whiter Than Snow (from Prayerful Improvisations 2) 3. Winter Bells (from Prayerful Improvisations: Christmas) 4. More Than You Can Imagine (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 46 - Advent
The season of Advent—the four weeks leading up to Christmas Day—is traditionally a time of reflection and anticipation. Have you been waiting for something to happen in your life? It’s difficult to wait, especially when we’re hoping for something better to come along and change our situation. As we wait and reflect may we never forget that there is Someone who waits with us and offers comfort and hope in Him—the best thing that could ever come in to our lives. This episode includes: 1. The Waiting (from Prayerful Improvisations: Christmas) 2. Waiting in Hope (from Prayerful Improvisations 2) 3. Comfort Now My People (new) 4. Episode 44 – Slowing Down
As the big holiday season approaches there is a danger in getting caught up in the unnecessary busy-ness and stress that accompanies this time of year. Take time to slow down and contemplate why we celebrate these holidays and savor each moment with family, friends and loved ones. Don’t let the world steal your joy and peace. Slow down . . . slow down . . . This episode includes: 1. Slowing Down (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 42 – Healing
British playwright and poet William Congreve wrote the often misquoted line, “Music hath charms to sooth the savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.” At the core of this sentence is a truth that music has a healing and restorative power like no other. If you are suffering from pain or heartache today, or perhaps feeling a bit lost, I pray “the Lord who heals you” (Exodus 15:26) reaches out to you today and soothes you through this music. This episode includes: 1. Willowherb – The Healer (from Flowers) 2. There is a Balm in Gilead (from Prayerful Improvisations) 3. Rest for Your Soul (new) 4. Episode 41 – Shine Like Stars
“Do everything without grumbling or arguing . . . Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life” (Philippians 2:14-15). Imagine how our attitude can turn the darkest of situations into shimmering light! You don’t have to imagine. You can shine like the stars and bring “the light of all” into the world. I pray this week’s music helps you shine! This episode includes: 1. Shine Like Stars (from Prayerful Improvisations 2) 2. Joy from “Spirit Suite” (from Glimpses of the Spirit) 3. Episode 40 – Friends
The beloved film It’s a Wonderful Life reminds us in the end that “no man is a failure who has friends.” This week’s music is a tribute to friends, to give thanks for the gift of friendship. All of this music I recorded at various times to bless my friends. “Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God” (Philippians 1:3). This episode includes: 1. The Joy of Friends 2. Rainy Day Prayer 3. Gratitude 4. A Wonderful Life (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 39 – New Life
Life isn’t always what we hope for. I recently finished working on a new theatrical adaptation of The Book of Esther, which is full of unexpected twists and turns. Yet it shows how God continues to use and bless His people for His good purpose even when things don't go as expected. While this life may not be what you hoped for right now, there is a new life waiting . . . something MORE than you could ever hope for; “more than you could ask or imagine.” Be reminded that in Christ, “you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God” (1 Peter 1:23, NLT). This episode includes: 1. A New Day (from Notes of Comfort: HOPE) 2. Have Thine Own Way (from Prayerful Improvisations) 3. Manifold Wisdom (from Impressions) 4. Raised to New Life (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 38 - Where Are You Going?
We all make plans. It’s inevitable. We’ve been given minds that can extrapolate future possibilities based on knowledge, experience and the heart (or gut). Sometimes we get too caught up in getting every step right that we forget to keep our eye on what or who we’re heading toward. This week’s music reminded me to not worry so much about the actual path but WHO the path is leading to. “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand” (Psalm 16:11). This episode includes: 1. I’ll Set a Course to You (new) 2. The Path (from Prayerful Improvisations: Worship) 3. How Great Thou Art (from Notes of Comfort: HOPE) 4. Devoted to You (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 37 – Quiet
Being quiet seems to be antithetical to today’s society and culture, at least in the United States. So many things tug on our attention and it can be difficult to ignore the numerous distractions in our lives. I encourage you to take the next 15 minutes or so just to be quiet. Quiet your heart, mind and soul, and breathe in peace from the music on this week’s podcast. [Special thanks to Gail Dorey for giving me permission to include her song. Be sure to check out her latest album!] This episode includes: 1. In the Quiet (piano solo version from Risky Prayer, music by Gail Dorey) 2. Gentle Whisper (from Impressions) 3. This week’s music is in dedication to all those who have gone before us. May any sadness we feel today be exchanged for joyful memories of our loved ones. As the scriptures say, “You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing praises to you and not be silent.” (Psalm 30:10-11) This episode includes: 1. In Remembrance (new) 2. Episode 33 – Classical Tribute
I apologize for being a day late in getting this episode out. On Monday I said goodbye to my Uncle Ron, the patriarch of our family, a wonderful gentleman, brilliant writer, mentor, and avid pianist and music lover . . . especially classical music. He always supported me in my musical endeavors, and challenged me to strive to do my best. I will miss him. So this week’s podcast is in tribute to him—all classical selections from my album Peaceful Classics. Mizpah, Uncle Ron. This episode includes: 1. Grande Sonata Pathetique, Op. 13, Mvt. 2 (Beethoven) 2. Nocturne in Eb, Op. 9, No. 2 (Chopin) 3. Intermezzo, Op. 118, No. 2 (Brahms) 4. Episode 32 – Making All Things New
This morning my wife asked me what I thought heaven looks like. I didn’t know how to answer her. Of course there is all the imagery found in scripture of a beautiful place beyond description, where God will “wipe away every tear and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” There are also scriptures that point to a day when God will make a “new heaven AND a new earth”. So what do you imagine heaven to be like? Whatever our vision may be, one thing is certain: “As high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is My (God’s) love for YOU.” That is a hope and a truth we can cling to now and forever. This episode includes: 1. As High as the Heavens (from Prayerful Improvisations: Worship) 2. Heavenly Father (from Prayerful Improvisations 2) 3. Making All Things New (new) 4. Episode 30 - Assurance
We all need assurance. It’s a key ingredient to our humanity. We have been created with the capacity to love deeply, to strive through the most difficult of circumstances, and to have faith in that which is unseen. Yet we have also been created with mind, heart and soul that need nurturing, nourishment and care. We need to be loved deeply, we need support when we go through the most difficult of circumstances, and we need assurance from a God who promises to strengthen our faith in Him even when it seems impossible. May you find assurance, healing, mercy and grace—to be fully assured—in the One who loves you beyond measure as you listen to today’s musical offering. This episode includes: 1. Blessed Assurance (from Notes of Comfort: HOPE) 2. Willowherb—The Healer (from Flowers) 3. Mercy and Grace (from Impressions) 4. Be Fully Assured (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 29 - Quieted with Love
Hear the Lord speak His words of love over you: “I am the Lord, your God, and I am with you. I am mighty to save you. I take great delight in you! I rejoice over you with singing and quiet you with my love” (Zephaniah 3:17, personalized). It’s incredible to think that the God of the universe would take the time to sing over each one of us and calm us—comfort us—with His love. This week’s music is one improvisation straight through focused on quieting your heart, mind, body and soul with love. This episode includes: 1. Songs of thanksgiving will fill the air” (Isaiah 51:3, NLT). This past Sunday the church celebrated Pentecost, the day when the Holy Spirit first came upon the apostles (Acts 2). Episode 21 - What is Good
“He has shown you . . . what is good” (Micah 6:8). How do we truly know that we are doing good things in life? What do we use as our gauge? God, who IS good, reveals to us “what is good” in this passage from Micah 6:8, “…to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” May this music prepare your heart for the day set before you and encourage you to do these things that are good in God’s sight. This episode includes: 1. What is Good (new) 2. The Lord is Good (from Impressions) 3. Kindness from "Spirit Suite" (from Glimpses of the Spirit) 4. Episode 19 - Prayer
I have been reading a book recently about prayer. Many authors contributed their understanding and practices of prayer to this book. One thing that struck me is that everyone prays differently—different ways, different routines, different places, different atmospheres. Yet we all pray to One God who tells us that He listens to our prayers. He doesn’t just hear them, but He intently listens and cares about what we pray. The music in this episode is about prayer and for your prayer time. As the wonderful hymn says: “Sweet hour of prayer Sweet hour of prayer That calls me from a world of care And bids me at my Father's throne Make all my wants and wishes known In seasons of distress and grief My soul has often found relief And oft escaped the tempter's snare By Thy return, sweet hour of prayer.” This episode includes: 1. Prayer (from Glimpses of the Spirit) 2. Contemplation (from Impressions) 3. Sweet Hour of Prayer (from Prayerful Improvisations 1) 4. Episode 18 - "Good Morning!"
“Good Morning!” This common greeting has come to be used as a simple acknowledgement of another person . . . just another way of saying “hello”. But what if we were to think of this greeting as a prayer of blessing? In fact, when we are wishing someone a “good” morning, we are essentially praying that they would experience God’s presence since He alone is truly “good.” And when we are in His presence, we have the opportunity to enjoy His blessing and benefits throughout our day. So I pray this music will lead you into God’s good presence today and that you enjoy a “good morning” with Him each and every day. This episode includes: 1. Mercy Morning (from Prayerful Improvisations 1) 2. Pear – The Mother (from Flowers) 3. Good Morning (new) 4. Gentleness (from Glimpses of the Spirit) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 15 - Holy Week
As Holy Week begins we are drawn ever closer to the pain and agony our suffering Messiah endured on his last days with His disciples. Yet in the midst of darkness we are reminded of Jesus’ own words: “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” May these musical reflections today comfort and console you, bringing light to your heart and mind, and give you hope in the resurrected Light of Christ. This episode includes: 1. Remember Me (from Prayerful Improvisations) 2. Gethsemane (from Prayerful Improvisations 2) 3. O Sacred Head Now Wounded (new) 4. Episode 14 - Faith
“Have Faith.” “Keep the faith!” “All you need is a little faith.” These are common aphorisms one might hear during crucial life moments when faith is being tested. And while these sayings are surely meant to provide comfort, they tend to lack a foundation on which we can plant our feet. After all, what is “faith” and where or with whom does our faith rest? Hebrews 11:1 tells us that “faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Throughout all four Gospels we read time and time again Jesus saying things like, “Your faith has made you well” or “Your faith has saved you.” And in every instance that “faith” is directed in one place: Jesus Himself! So continue to be forever faithful, for there is “confidence in what we hope for” in our Lord and Savior. This episode includes: 1. Faithfulness from “Spirit Suite” (from Glimpses of the Spirit) 2. Hope Assured – Hebrews 11:1 (new) 3. Forever Faithful (from Prayerful Improvisations) 4. My Faith Has Found a Resting Place (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 12 - The Invitation
When we receive an invitation to an event, it often makes us feel good for two reasons. First, it gives us something to look forward to, perhaps something we may not have expected to be a part of. But secondly it tells us that the sender of the invitation cares about us, that they want us to be present for their special event. Episode 11 - Be Strong
In the apostle Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, just before he describes what it means to “put on the full armor of God” (Chapter 6), he reminds us to “be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” When faced with life’s unexpected difficulties, we quickly forget that God provides us with the strength we need to endure. I hope this music encourages you to stand firm in the ways of the Lord—in His mighty power—and find strength within yourself that only He can provide. Take heart, dear friends… This episode includes: 1. Take Heart (new) 2. Steadfast (from Impressions) 3. Strength Within (from Prayerful Improvisations) 4. Finding Courage (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 10 - Peace, Be Still
“Quiet, be still.” In that one moment, Jesus spoke and the storm and sea calmed (Mark 4:39). Our days fill up so quickly with noise and clutter. Maybe today we need to hear Jesus say to the storms in our own hearts and souls, “Quiet, be still…” This episode includes: 1. What a Blessing was that Stillness* (new) 2. Borage (from Flowers) 3. Be Still My Soul (from Prayerful Improvisations 2) 4. Peace, Be Still (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter *Based on Psalm 107:28-31, NLT: “Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor! Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.”

Episode 9 - Hymns of Jesus
Hymns. It’s easy to discount hymns of the past because they are old and “out of date.” But I have always loved hymns and especially enjoy improvising on hymn tunes. Here are some hymns about Jesus that I hope will remind you of “the author and perfecter of our faith” and provide a moment of peace and comfort in your day. The music closes with an original improvisation giving thanks to our Savior. This episode includes: 1. Fairest Lord Jesus (from Prayerful Improvisations) 2. My Shepherd (from Prayerful Improvisations 2) 3. My Jesus, I Love Thee (new) 4. Thank You (from Prayerful Improvisations 2) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 8 - Hope
Hope is vital to our lives as human beings, particularly in times of difficulty and despair. Thankfully we have been given the greatest hope ever in a person. The apostle Peter writes, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3). As we wait in hope, may we trust in the hope God has given us in our “Living Hope”. May you find hope today in Him. This episode includes: 1. Waiting in Hope (from Prayerful Improvisations 2) 2. Trusting in Hope (new) 3. Living Hope (from Prayerful Improvisations, concert version) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 7 - The Presence of God
“Be still in the Light of My Presence while I communicate love to you…” (Sarah Young, Jesus Calling). Life can get so busy that we forget to take time to be still. God wants us to be still so that we may become more aware of and enjoy His Presence all the more. Then we can be refreshed by His unconditional love! I pray this music helps you find time to be still and be drawn into God’s presence, as Brother Lawrence experienced: “The King, full of mercy and goodness, very far from chastising me, embraces me with love, makes me eat at His table, serves me with His own hands, gives me the key of His treasures; He converses and delights Himself with me incessantly, in a thousand and a thousand ways, and treats me in all respects as His favorite. It is thus I consider myself from time to time in His holy presence.” (The Practice of the Presence of God). This episode includes: 1. His Presence (new) 2. More Than a Baby (from Prayerful Improvisations: Christmas) 3. White Yarrow—The Hero (from Flowers) 4. My Heart’s Delight (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 6 - Light
Light. It’s something we can see, explain with science, and experience its natural benefits. But what if “Light” is also a person? The author of John’s Gospel writes that Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12)”. May the light of Christ reveal His goodness and grace to you today and shine brightly in the darkness to lead you to “everlasting light.” This episode includes: 1. O Gracious Light (new) 2. Revealing Light (from Impressions) 3. Light in the Darkness (new) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter

Episode 3 - This is the Day the Lord Has Made
As I write this from my New England home, our house is surrounded by icy snow, temperatures in the single digits, and a general gloominess from the lack of color in the sky or on the ground. But I’m reminded that no matter what our circumstances, “This is the day the Lord has made! So let us rejoice and be glad in it!” (Psalm 118:24). The Lord surrounds us with the warmth of His love and brings light to the darkness. So I pray today’s music will encourage you to press on and enjoy this day, the day God made just for you. This episode includes: 1. A New Day (new improvisation) 2. Patience, from Spirit Suite (from Glimpses of the Spirit) 3. Sunflower (from Flowers) 4. For the Beauty of the Earth (new improvisation) God bless you and thanks for listening! - Peter
