Episode 7: PLCs with Scott Hundley

In this episode, Keith has a conversation about Professional Learning Communities with Scott Hundley, the principal at Northside Elementary School in Midway (Woodford County).

About Mr. Hundley:
Scott Hundley earned an Undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University followed by a Masters in Special Education at Georgetown College and most recently completed a Masters in Administration at EKU.  He served for 12 years as a high school special education teacher in Scott, Montgomery, and Woodford Counties. Three of those years he served as the Special Education department chair.  He then spent four years as the Assistant Principal at Woodford County Middle School and is now in his 2nd year as Principal at Northside Elementary in Midway, Kentucky.  He and his wife Torie have been married for 12 years.  They have a beautiful, brilliant 6 year old daughter named Adlee. You can connect with Scott by emailing him at
scott.hundley@woodford.kyschools.us

In this episode Scott mentions that he and Keith coached together.  They were both assistant coaches at Scott County High School when the Cardinals won the Boys Basketball State Championship in 2007.  They then took on a new adventure together, coaching Montgomery County High School for the next three years.  Scott didn't mention that he was Mr. Kentucky Basketball in 2000 and went on to play four years at Vanderbilt University.  Hundley and Griesser remain good friends to this day - which shines through in this conversation about PLCs.

We hope you enjoy Episode 7 of the P3 Podcast - PLCs with Scott Hundley.

Episode 9: The Purple Star Award Program

Episode 9: The Purple Star Award Program

In this Episode, Keith talks with Sarah Jemison - the Program Coordinator for the Purple Star Program and Brigadier General (Retired) Steve Bullard - the Executive Director for the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs about the Purple Star Award Program that recognizes and assists schools who make a special effort to support students of military personnel and the special challenges they face.

The P3 Website

Purple Star Award is a state-sponsored recognition for individual schools’ dedication and support of military-connected youth.  The Program started in 2016 in Ohio as a result of conversations with veterans, educators, military family members, students, service members and others about ways schools can better serve military students and their families.

The Purple Star Award designation lets military parents know, whether they are on active duty or in the National Guard and Reserves, that a school is dedicated to helping their child gain the educational skills necessary to be college-, workforce- and life-ready. According to a 2020 evaluation report by the Military Child Education Coalition, 77% of Military parents whose children attended a Purple Star School reported that their children had a satisfactory to very satisfactory socio-emotional experience compared with only  54% of military children at non-Purple Star schools. The program is supported by the US Department of Defense, Military Child Education Coalition, and the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission, and currently, 33 states implement the program in their schools and school districts.

Vision:   Every military-connected youth in Kentucky receives what they need to succeed.

Mission: Instill a sense of connection and strengthen resilience within Kentucky’s military- connected youth.

Goals:

  1. Create and sustain a statewide support system within schools and communities that work together to build resilience and support for military-connected youth in Kentucky.
  2. Increase protective factors to help prevent substance use and behavioral health challenges among military-connected youth in Kentucky.
  3. Partner with schools and communities to foster diverse, inclusive, and supportive environments for military-connected youth and families.
  4. Educate the schools and community on the challenges faced by military families

Episode 11 Restructuring PLCs To Better Reach ALL Students with Jill Angelucci

Episode 11 Restructuring PLCs To Better Reach ALL Students with Jill Angelucci

In this episode, Jill Angelucci shares strategies for school improvement through Professional Learning Communities.

From Jill:  "In a year of transition and change, we have found new energy though a refocused and restructured PLC process. This presentation will cover our new protocol, tips for collecting and analyzing data efficiently, and how to support teachers in this process. This process started at the high school level and is now being done at all levels across the district. We are excited to share our resources with you!"

About Jill Angelucci:
Jill is an assistant principal at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester, Kentucky. A cool fact about Jill - especially with PLCs being the topic at hand:  She graduated from Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, IL, and Dr. DuFour was her superintendent when she was a student there. She spent 12 years as a math teacher; first in Chicago and then in Lexington.  She became an instructional coach at GRC in 2017 and then moved into the role of Assistant Principal in 2019.  In this presentation, Jill begins with a clip from Lexington principal and everyone's favorite comedian Gerry Brooks.  She then dives in to the process used for PLCs at GRC and the protocol used to guide their work. (link to the protocol is below)

This episode is the audio from Jill's prestation at ECamp.  If you'd like to see the video of the presentation, here is the link.

Episode 13 - The Impact Survey: From Gut Punch to Growth Tool with Eric Thornsbury

Episode 13 - The Impact Survey: From Gut Punch to Growth Tool with Eric Thornsbury

About This Episode: Eric Thornsbury is the principal at Tates Creek Middle School in Lexington, KY.  In this episode, Eric and I discuss his process for collaborating with his staff using the Impact Survey questions to create a rubric that clearly defines the terms in an effort to get everyone, staff and administration team, on the same page.  Eric told me outside of the interview, "Keith I have to admit that for a long time I was hurt, put off, and even had a vindictive mindset when I saw the results of these Working Conditions Surveys, but then I dug in and found out that there was so much room for interpretation from one person to the next.  I needed to know what they (the teachers) really wanted and we needed to drill down deeper than the survey questions to really figure it out.  Through this process there have been quite a few realizations for our admin team. There have also been many realizations by our teachers as they talk to each other about what constitutes feedback, what frequency is realistic for each category, and by determining how the school defines various terms within the questions of the survey.  This is all still a work in progress, but it's been very much worth the time; not to just have a better survey score, but to have these important conversations."
