How To Fix a Toxic Workplace: An Interview with Richard Hawkes

How To Fix a Toxic Workplace: An Interview with Richard Hawkes

Is workplace drama standing in the way of productivity? Do colleagues fight over petty issues? Are teams more concerned about protecting their territory than getting the job done? Is bad behavior being tolerated? These are just a few of the signs that a toxic workplace is impeding organizational success, says Richard Hawkes, author of NAVIGATE THE SWIRL and CEO of the consulting firm Growth River. These behaviors are part of “the Swirl” — the daily mix of problems, turf battles, and drama that block an organization’s ability to focus on the real issues that result in transformation and growth.

In his forthcoming book, Hawkes presents a step-by-step guide for building highly engaged, high-performing teams and organizations, despite the Swirl. His playbook centers on Seven Crucial Conversations, a series of ongoing, intentional conversations that help people align and re-imagine the “social systems” in which they work.

In this podcast, Jim Stroud, VP of Marketing at Proactive Talent interviews Hawkes on...

• What the Swirl is, and how it holds companies back
• The signs of a toxic workplace
• What leaders should do to “detox” a toxic workplace
• The Seven Crucial Conversations that help organizations build highly effective teams and workplaces
• How to build high-performing teams in today’s hybrid workplace

Hawkes’ insights in NAVIGATE THE SWIRL will help organizations break free of unnecessary constraints. The book provides a roadmap for wielding influence in the complex, adaptive social systems of today’s workplace.

Richard S. Hawkes, author of NAVIGATE THE SWIRL, is the Founder of Growth River, an international consultancy that guides leaders and teams to create higher performance in businesses and organizations. Donna Cutting is our Emotional Support Human

Donna Cutting is our Emotional Support Human

Today, I interviewed Donna Cutting and have unofficially proclaimed her my emotional support human because of her cheery, positive vibes. We discussed employment branding, the great resignation and how to put employees first. I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation and this you will too.

- Jim Stroud

NOTES AND QUESTIONS ASKED IN THIS PODCAST

The past two years have been extraordinary in the world of work. Due to the pandemic and now this post-Covid world, a lot of workers are trying to find themselves. I think that's why this phenomenon of The Great Resignation is taking place. In this atmosphere, I've been told that the best thing a company can do is instill a sense of purpose in their team. If that's true, what would you say are the benefits of defining purpose for your team? How do you define your team's purpose - and use it in practice?

A growing trend in the world of work is "location-agnostic pay" where people are paid the same salary no matter where they are in the world. I know several companies are offering this to be competitive. It makes me wonder, what is the best way to insure fair compensation?

Many companies have moved to a WFH (work from home) model when the pandemic hit and although the trend now seems to be a hybrid office (some days at home/some days at the office), new management challenges are surfacing. People who work from home may be more favored because of the close interaction causing remote workers to feel less valued. Do you have any suggestions on how companies can keep remote teams connected? Should remote workers be handled differently than those who regularly come into the office? And how can companies encourage diversity and inclusion in these situations?

We spend so much of our lives at work. According to the website - ReviseSociology, we will spend 92,120 hours in our lifetime at work; assuming you work full time from age 18 to 67. That's a lot of time to spend with people you may or may not like. I would think a little bit of kindness at work would make those years feel more rewarding. Can you offer any tips on how companies can cultivate kindness and compassion at work?

Building an Authentic & Scalable DEI Strategy

Building an Authentic & Scalable DEI Strategy

"Building an Authentic and Scalable DEI Strategy" is the first in a special series of podcasts for Founders, Talent Acquisition Leaders and HR Leaders who are in a rapidly growing and evolving organization and are constantly looking to elevate or even build their DEI strategy and culture. What makes this event special is that it is being programmed, in part, by you. What do I mean by that? The presentation is based on questions posed by the panel moderator and by questions submitted by our network.

Topics explored in this podcast event include how business leaders and executives can:

  • Foster environments of cultural relevance and responsiveness so that the work of DEI does not become performative and outdated.
  • Create a value-driven DEI brand that doesn’t focus solely on program-driven initiatives, but people-centered initiatives that drive cultural transformation.
  • Identify critical need areas to inform company-wide policies and solutions. By understanding the pain points and areas of growth, organizations are positioned to develop sustainable DEI strategies that have realistic metrics of success and accountability across business units.
  • Foster environments of learning where training and coaching allow for an increased awareness of unconscious bias, microaggressions, and other forms of discrimination in order to promote a workplace where people can continue to have fearless dialogue while gaining practical tools of inclusion.
  • Serve as allies and advocates against all of discrimination in order to demonstrate that your company is committed to going beyond a statement and willing promote diversity and acceptance internally and externally as the core to its business success.

Speakers during the event are:

Greg Fontus - Lead Consultant for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Proactive Talent

Seema Daryanani - Global Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leader at Google

Marissa Huang - Head of Talent at Playground Global

In Search of Perfect Feedback: An Interview with Dale Rose

In Search of Perfect Feedback: An Interview with Dale Rose

In this episode, Courtney Lane interviews Dale rose, a nationally recognized expert in leadership development, 360 Feedback and assessment-based human resources solutions. 360 Feedback is likely something you have experienced in corporate environments. However, the way organizations implement the assessment might be less than optimum. So, what is the best way to give and receive 360 feedback? Find out here.

ABOUT DALE ROSE

As an advisor to senior leaders for over 20 years, Dale S. Rose brings a deep expertise in organizational and individual effectiveness to his coaching. He coaches leaders to achieve their goals by focusing them on practical behaviors that generate tangible results. The best leaders articulate a compelling organizational vision and create a high performance culture that allows employees to achieve that vision. To attain these goals, leaders who work with Dale learn to communicate with impact, engage employees, empower their team, and inspire their peers. Dale is particularly adept at getting leaders to understand and accept difficult feedback using assessments of personality, workstyles, and behavioral 360 Feedback. He helps leaders see a path for improvement on their highest priorities and then holds them accountable to their goals for change.

Dale works primarily with C-suite leaders and boards of directors. He has extensive experience working with leaders navigating role transitions. Transitions such as entering a new role, preparing for a promotion, or adapting to major organizational change pose significant challenges to even the best leaders. Dale focuses on the critical shifts in behavior and job requirements that will help leaders adapt. To make a big transition successfully, leaders must level up their own capacities efficiently, focusing on the most important skills and responsibilities, without getting caught up in what was needed in the past. Additionally, understanding the shifts in expectations of key stakeholders is essential to leaders trying to make a significant change in their roles, responsibilities, and sphere of influence. Dr. Rose co-founded 3D Group in 1994 in Chicago, Illinois. He is an expert in leadership development and organizational effectiveness and has authored over a dozen commercial assessments for identifying and developing talent. Dr. Rose’s coaching clients have come from a wide range of companies including Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Brown and Toland Physicians, DoCoMo Laboratories, Fiserv, GE Digital, GlobalScape, Irvine Companies, Juniper Networks, NORCAL Mutual Insurance Co., PwC, Samuel Merritt University, Service Master, Singulex, Stanford University, and Teach for America. He received his Doctoral degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Chicago’s DePaul University with a minor in Organizational Effectiveness Technologies.
