Podcast #5 – Modern-Day Systems in Latin America
This podcast is an analysis of modern-day systems in Latin America. It starts with a review of the Left turn and ends with an analysis of the Puerto Rican Island of Vieques. This podcast will cover the governments, the economics, gender roles, and the general effects of colonialism in Latin America. The first section on the Left turn explores the political motivations of the leaders of multiple countries, as well as cases of corruption. The second section discusses the impact of coloniality on the economy from the post-independence period until the modern day, specifically focusing on how these colonial legacies perpetuated poverty in the region. Next, the following section discusses the role of women in society, and how these shaped women’s participation in modern, economic political arenas. Lastly, the podcast ends by describing how many of these themes manifest in Vieques, an island occupied by the United States Navy for decades and has been the site of many protests. Today, the island lacks access to resources and health care.

Episode #1 - The Mexican Revolution
This episode is an analysis of the Mexican Revolution. The first section will be a brief overview and cover the aftermath between the 1920s and 1940s, examining the most crucial events and figures. The next section assesses Porfirio Díaz and his influence in Mexico during his regime known as the Porfiriato, which lasted 35 years from 1876 until 1911. Then, we will go over a brief history of mestizaje and how it was a foundation for the construction of post-revolutionary Mexican identity, as well as the implications of José Vasconcelos’ “raza cósmica” ideology. Last is an inspection of post-revolutionary Mexico through the lens of Lázaro Cardenas, including the precursors and aftermath of Cárdenas’ rule and how he implemented his platform throughout the country.
