#9 - Always learning with Samuel A. Livingston

Samuel A. Livingston was born in Chicago in 1942 and grew up in the Pittsburgh area. During 1966 and 1967, he was a member of the U.S. 4th Armored Division Band; except for that, he has never been a professional musician. Since 1974 he has lived in central New Jersey, where he plays the clarinet in a community band, traditional jazz groups, and chamber music groups.  As a composer, he is entirely self-taught.  His recent (21st century) compositions include works for concert band, a quintet for clarinet and strings, and chamber music for wind instruments.

#8 - Working as a professional composer in China with Addison Wong

Born in Macau, Addison (Kei Hong) Wong came to the United States when he was sixteen. After graduating with a Master of Music degree in composition from the University of Oregon, he served as the musical director at the Northwest Christian University, Eugene Oregon. Besides teaching music composition and theory classes at the college, he also directs and composes music for the Jazz Band and the University Choir and Orchestra, in which he writes and arranges more than 45 minutes of music every year.

Beside writing music for live performances, he also works with filmmakers as a film composer. His music score for the short film “Short Alone” was nominated for the Best Score Award at the Great Lakes Christian Film Festival 2018 in Buffalo, New York. The score was also presented in the following festivals in 2018: Hollywood vine International Film Festival, Inspired Faith Film Festival and International Christian Film and Music Festival.

​Wong is a keyboardist and jazz pianist who performs regularly in town. He attends the Eugene Chinese Christian Church where he served as the choir director and worship bandleader prior teaching at the University. While enjoying hiking beautiful trails in Oregon, he treasures spending time with his wife on movies and sharing Chinese culture with his two sons the most.

#7 - Composing after college with Cody Myre

Born in Gaylord, Michigan in 1997, Cody Myre is a composer of large ensemble, chamber, and vocal music. His music focuses on evoking images from the world in the form of short narratives. Cody takes inspiration from countless styles of music, from abstract hip-hop to Appalachian folk music, to create humorous, often oxymoronic stories. His pieces have been performed at numerous festivals, sessions, and concerts around the world, including new music festivals in Washington, New York, and Italy.  

Cody spends much of his time editing scores and making parts as editor for T.U.X. People’s Music Publishing. As a proud alumnus of the Gamma Theta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, Cody is committed to the advancement of music in America.

Cody completed his undergraduate studies in music composition at the University of North Texas, where he studied under composers Andrew May, Kirsten Broberg, Louise Fristensky, and Michael Smith. His goals are to continue to study the art of music engraving, librarianship, and publication during his postgraduate studies. He currently resides in Denton, Texas with his wife and two cats.

#6 - Nurturing your compositional voice with Smee Wong

Smee Wong started playing the piano at the age of four. In 2003, with top music major scores for the entrance exam, Smee was admitted into the Composition Department of Shanghai Conservatory of Music. As a conservatory student, Smee was invited twice as guest composer to the Beijing Modern Music Festival. He published two articles, appearing in Art Review and Journal of Xinghai Conservatory of Music. Smee was awarded in The Symposium 2010 of the 4th Annual Meeting of China Music Review Society. In 2014, he completed a Master’s degree in vocal jazz performance at the University of Denver. Smee is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in composition at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa. In 2018, Smee translated a book titled Who Killed Classical Music? by Norman Lebrecht to be published in 2019.

#5 - What it means to be a percussionist with Travis Rigby

Travis Rigby (b. 1991) is a composer, arranger, and educator based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Having grown up in San Antonio Texas, he attended Trinity University where he made the decision to pursue a degree in composition. Under the instruction of Brian Bondari, he developed a strong understanding and passion for large ensemble writing. In 2012, he won the Tennessee Valley Music Festival Young Composers’ Competition with his first orchestral composition, Overture to a Cinematic Adventure. Continuing his focus on large ensemble writing, Travis attended the University of Kansas, where he earned a Master’s degree in composition under the instruction of James Barnes and Ingrid Stölzel. During his time at KU, Travis won the 2015 Robert E. Foster Prize for Sonoran Splendor, which was premiered by the KU Wind Ensemble under the direction of Paul Popiel the following year. Travis was also a finalist for the 2016 Anthony B. Cius Award. Travis’s music is often tonal, tuneful, and inspired by nature. He has written for orchestra, wind ensemble, choir, handbells, chamber ensembles, voice, piano, and organ. He currently holds a position at Westinghouse Arts Academy in Wilmerding, PA where he teaches music theory, history, and composition, and directs all instrumental ensembles.

#4 - Nicolas Smith's undying love for Anime, Games, & Gospel

Mr. Smith is from Mansfield, TX, where he graduated from Mansfield High School in 2015. While at Mansfield Mr. Smith was involved in the Tiger Marching band as a trumpet player and electronic keyboardist. Other ensembles Include the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band I, Men's Chorus and Chamber Choir/ Honor Choir. He is also a graduate from the University of North Texas, where he obtained his undergraduate studies degree in Music Education. His primary instrument, while attending UNT, was the piano and was a part of a plethora ensembles, where he studied with Dr. Nicholas E. Williams, Denis Fisher, Mark Ford, Eugene M. Corporon and Pamela Mia Paul. These ensembles include: The UNT Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, The UNT Green Brigade Marching Band, and the 2 'O Clock and 8 'O Clock Steel Bands. While on Campus he was an active member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity and served on the leadership of the Green Brigade Marching Band as a trumpet section leader. Along with these organizations Mr. Smith Created a music program through the Oak Gardens Church within the inner-city Dallas area where the primary objective was to bring instrumental music to under privileged children. During his time at the Oak Gardens Church he was in charge of teaching as well as creating the curriculum.

#3 - Michael Goodman on artistic rebirth

The composition faculty of Michigan State University has described Michael Goodman’s music as dramatic, humorous, and energetic. He views composition as a communicative tool that enhances his musical and philosophical ideas. Michael’s music stems from personal, neurodivergent experiences of his own or close friends. He creates music that is organic by including acting, speech, humor, and drama. He is also known to combine various genres such as rock, jazz, and classical music to create a musical space that is uniquely expressive and authentic.

Michael’s compositions have been performed throughout North America, U.K., Portugal, Hong Kong, and Croatia by musicians, ensembles and festivals such as Sarah Lewis - 2nd oboist at Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Eddie Goodman - assistant professor of saxophone at University of Arizona, Cacophonie, the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, Musique 21, University of the Pacific, The Great Noise Ensemble, ensemble mise-en, Mise-en Festival, and Charlotte New Music Festival. Michael’s Test Drive was the winner of the New Music Ensemble Category in the Michigan State University Honors Composition Competition and his Piano was nominated as a finalist for the Keene State College Call for Scores event.

Michael received his Master of Music degree and his Bachelor of Music degree in music composition at Michigan State University while studying under Ricardo Lorenz, Jere Hutcheson, Charles Ruggiero, and Mark Sullivan. He has also had lessons under Joel Hoffman, Armando Bayolo, William Bolcom, Michael Daugherty, David Dzubay, Kieran MacMillan, and Marc Mellits. In addition, he received his Master of Arts degree in Arts Administration at Florida State University. Michael has also interned with Eighth Blackbird, Third Coast Percussion, and Ensemble Dal Niente.

#2 - John Kosch on developing a musical narrative

John Kosch is a composer based in Kearney, Nebraska. His work as a composer and arranger reflects his diverse musical interests, exploring an array of media and styles ranging from music for jazz orchestra to art song, a cappella arrangements, marching band shows, and electronic music. He particularly enjoys writing music for school and community ensembles, combining his love of composition with his passion for education. His works have garnered several honors, including a Student Downbeat Award, a Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award, first place in the NAfME Young Composers Competition, and a merit award from the Tribeca New Music Young Composer Competition. A Lincoln native, Kosch received his bachelor's degree in music education from the Glenn Korff School of Music at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He graduated summa cum laude from the university honors program and was named a Chancellor's Scholar. Kosch is also an active performer and educator. He has appeared with groups such as the Bobby Layne Orchestra, the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, as well as the Kearney Area Percussion Ensemble, Kearney Community Band, and Platte River Singers. He currently instructs 4-12 instrumental music at Elm Creek Schools, where his bands have received several superior ratings.

#1 - Lee "Sparky" Thomason on Jazz & Concert Band

Lee “Sparky” Thomason is a trumpet player, composer, arranger, and educator from Rockdale, Texas. A frequent performer in Austin, Temple, and Waco; he is currently playing with the Temple Jazz Orchestra, the Tonic Big Band and Small Group, the N.O.W. (New Original Works) Jazz Orchestra, Duck Soup, and the Urban Achievers Brass Band, and subbing with anybody else whenever the phone rings. He has been arranging and composing big band jazz charts for the past thirty years. His charts have been performed by numerous high school, college, and professional bands all over Texas and Utah, where Thomason lived for seven years.

He has arranged charts for the Latin groups Mambo Jumbo, Latin Breed, Gilbert Alba, and the Super City Band. Thomason wrote and performed his first full orchestra arrangement of "Someone To Watch Over Me" four years ago with the Temple Symphony Orchestra and wrote his first concert band piece, "In the Days of Royal and Old" as a tribute to his high school band, the Big Blue Band from Tigerland of Rockdale, TX. He has written jazz arrangements for trumpet player Keith Fiala, Austin-based jazz trombone group, the Jazzbonez, and a brass quintet arrangement of his own tune, "Ludis Blues" for the brass quintet, the Brass Connection. Thomason has also recently began writing music for the British brass ensembles, as well.
