Marine Veterans Jim Bottrell and James Conway Discuss Transitioning Out Of The Military in San Diego - PROJECT : CONNECT - Episode 002

Marine Veterans Jim Bottrell and James Conway Discuss Transitioning Out Of The Military in San Diego - PROJECT : CONNECT - Episode 002

On our second episode of PROJECT : CONNECT,  Josh White (VP/County Manager) interviews marine veterans Jim Bottrell and James Conway about the transition from military to civilian life.

San Diego is home to the largest concentration of military personnel, with military veterans making up more than 13% of the population. While the volume of service men and women is quite high here, it is not always known where to turn for resources when they are transitioning out into civilian roles.

Jim Bottrell and James Conway bring two perspectives to the topic of veterans transitioning back into civilian life. Jim Bottrell is a veteran marine officer that now owns a successful real estate business, and has dedicated himself to hiring veterans and service personnel. James Conway spent 20 years in the marines before transitioning out, and now helps train other veterans transitioning for the organization Veteran Transition Support (https://www.veteranstransitionsupport...). Veterans Transition Support is a non-profit in Southern California dedicated to helping veterans transition from military to civilian, by providing no-cost training programs that can build upon their skills, career counseling, and more.

The key takeaways from this conversation include...

- Adjusting from rules and regulations in the military is a hard transition into civilian

- No one organization can fully transition out a service member

- There are resources, but you must seek them out and utilize them

- Finding a job that builds upon the skills you had in service is key in your success

- PTSD is real, and it can make it very difficult to cope with transitioning
