In this episode Daniel and Thomas get retrospective on student mental health and the modern university. We rant a bit (more than a bit) about the issues facing the modern university that create a façade of help for students and may not help as much as they seem. Episode 130: Even the Psychics Hate Mediums: Paranormal Pseudoscience

Episode 130 of our book read/podcast covering major topics in various fields of psychology moves us into a continuation of the Year of Clickbait with PSEUDOSCIENCE! This Spring we are going to be talking about pseudoscience. Who believes it? Why do they believe it? Is there a kernel of truth to some of the pseudoscientific beliefs people have? And more…

In this episode Daniel and Thomas discuss Ghost hunting as maybe the least harmful pseudoscience, the people who want to study the supernatural for real, and mediums, who might not be that harmless. It’s a casual episode to kick off the season on pseudoscience

This harmful practice is used today to a wide degree and legal in practice in 30 states. We also discuss the issues where psychology could push back and why it still exists.

Episode 128 of our book read/podcast covering major topics in various fields of psychology moves us into a continuation of the Year of Clickbait with PSEUDOSCIENCE! This Spring we are going to be talking about pseudoscience. Who believes it? Why do they believe it? Is there a kernel of truth to some of the pseudoscientific beliefs people have? And more…

In this episode Daniel and Thomas shift from things you shouldn’t drink to things you shouldn't eat. The raw meat diet, the carnivore diet, and breatharians all fall into our crosshairs as pseudoscience. Are they as bad as the last things we’ve discussed? Are they as weird as urine therapy? Probably not as weird, but just as potentially harmful as the rest. So, just like with bleach, there are some things we shouldn’t be consuming.

In this episode Daniel and Thomas talk about spectrum of medical history to naturopath pseudoscience religion through a number of poisonous substances that some people say drinking can cure all your maladies. From the history of turpentine as a cure to the rise of industrial bleaching agents as a miracle supplement and “sacrament”, to the spirituality of Shivambu or urine therapy where people consume, wash, and engage in other practices with a dangerous natural waste product.

Episode 126: Don’t Give Boys Lavender Oil and Other Lessons About Essential Oils

Episode 126 of our book read/podcast covering major topics in various fields of psychology moves us into a continuation of the Year of Clickbait with PSEUDOSCIENCE! This Spring we are going to be talking about pseudoscience. Who believes it? Why do they believe it? Is there a kernel of truth to some of the pseudoscientific beliefs people have? And more…

In this episode we discuss the secret world of essential oils while testing new equipment live at the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association. Daniel and Thomas talk about the bit of truth behind some oils, the rise of religious multi-level marketing companies pushing their oils to cure everything under the sun, and the dangers of over exposure and misuse of these ‘cures’. We also use the c-word (cults…) and whether or not they apply and muse on the claims by some past members on whether or not one of these MLMs is secretly run by the devil!

Warning: This episode may contain some graphic information and all season we will be talking about some less than savory topics.

While on one hand you have vitamins and herbal supplements that can offer some benefits the placebo market of homeopathic cures runs the spectrum of inert sugar water to harmful poison. Is there some science to support these wild claims? Do you really need that much vitamin C? How much does something have to be diluted in order to still be effective? This Spring we are going to be talking about pseudoscience. Who believes it? Why do they believe it? Is there a kernel of truth to some of the pseudoscientific beliefs people have? And more…

In this episode Thomas and Daniel discuss psychology related pseudoscience: parapsychology, pseudo-belief, and handwriting analysis. Psychology is rife with things that seem to make sense but have no merit in research or actual reality. On one hand we discuss the history of parapsychology and attempts to codify the unknown in grounded research. On the other hand we examine graphology, a field that, like the Meyers-Briggs, just isn’t valid in modern psychology but is still used today. Both as well, are super popular in the U.K. compared to the U.S.
