124: Instant Review on CSM 2023 & Ramblings on Psychological factors in Physical Therapy
This was my instant review of the recently concluded APTA CSM 2023 held in San Diego. I talked about the CSM venue, exhibits, and programming. I also discussed connecting with fellow physical therapists, especially with the Academy of Filipino American Physical Therapists (AFAPT) reception. Lastly, I rambled my comments and hudge-podge of ideas I failed to convey in the forum I attended regarding psychological factors in physical therapy.

This is one of those solo podcasts I would do every now and then. In this episode, I shared the role a physical therapist plays in a forensic psychiatric hospital. I answered some of the questions colleagues usually ask me when they find out I work in this type of hospital. I described the types of patients I encounter and treat, and the common conditions I see them for. I also discussed what's unique about working in this type of setting.

Being a rock climber gives him an inside perspective on the sports and the physical demand of the athletes. In this episode, Jonathan Magpoc Eusebio, PT, DPT shares his physical therapy story and the process of becoming a physical therapist in Singapore. He discussed how he transitioned from personal training back to physical therapy. He described what it's like to work as a physiotherapist in Singapore and why he likes working there.
Jonathan Magpoc Eusebio is a physiotherapist working in a community hospital in Singapore. He graduated from Emilio Aguinaldo College and has experience delivering rehabilitative services across various settings including inpatient and outpatient facilities, nursing homes, and wellness centers. He earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Montana.

116: Recap on Unique Perspectives from the Other Side
Here's a recap for you with some highlights of their episodes. If you haven't seen or listened to these episodes yet, this is your sign to do so. Eleazar Tayag started us off with the roles physical therapists play in hospice care. In PT MEAL live Handaan, with Fretche Garcia Blair and Maria Consie Aguila, Ben Aguila shared horror stories by colleagues regarding employers' or recruiters' dark schemes. Eric Anthony Galvez a PT and brain tumor survivor shared lessons he learned as a patient that his fellow PTs can learn from as well as some advice to fellow brain tumor thrivers. Next, Marvin Zotomayor answered when he was ready to talk about or go about coping with failing in physical therapy school. Lastly, Riza Carlton, another PT turned patient story, shared what family members and caregivers do in providing awesome care to their loved ones or patients with dementia. Indeed this batch has given us first-hand experiences and unique perspectives coming from people who actually faced adversities in their life and showed us that we're not alone and that we can prevail and succeed.
115: Impact of Dementia to Patients and Caregivers with Riza Carlton
Riza Carlton, PT experienced a reversible type of dementia in 2019. Today, she speaks about her experience and how it made an impact on her life. In this episode, she described her ordeal in going through early signs of dementia without any clue of what was happening. She also shared how she and her son dealt with the changes she was experiencing. And after discovering the cause of her dementia and finding out it was reversible, Riza decided to advocate for the appropriate and effective care of people with dementia. She shared common questions family members and primary caregivers ask and advice on how to better take care of people with dementia.

114: Primary Care PT: Place or Mindset?
This episode was recorded live. Here I shared a discussion I've had with some other PTs in a course I am attending about Primary Care Physical Therapy. The take-home message here is that being a primary care physical therapist is not only applicable to those who are being seen in an outpatient clinic with direct access. Being a primary care PT and its philosophy can and should be applied by every physical therapist regardless of the practice setting or specialty.

112: Brain Tumor Survivor to Advocate with Eric Anthony Galvez
What happens when a PT becomes a patient after finding out he has a golf ball-sized brain tumor? In this episode Eric Anthony Galvez, DPT shared his story of diagnosis and rehabilitation from his brain tumor surgery. He talked about how the brain tumor impacted his personal and professional life, as well as, how being a physical therapist helped him navigate through his journey. He also described his advocacy for raising awareness about cancer in young adults, and his work with APTA Oncology and World Physiotherapy. Lastly, he shared the lessons he learn from his experience when the roles were reversed from being a PT to a patient, and how to thrive post-brain tumor.
Eric Anthony Galvez, PT, DPT is a physical therapist who was diagnosed with a golf-ball-sized brain tumor in 2005. A month later he underwent surgery to remove it. Now he's active in APTA Oncology and in IPT-HOPE or the International Physiotherapists for HIV/AIDS, Oncology, and Palliative care Empowerment. He also wrote two books about his journey first is entitled “Reversal: When A Therapist Becomes A Patient” and his latest book “Awakening: Becoming A Brain Tumor Thriver.” Without further ado, it's my pleasure to welcome Dr. Eric Galvez.

110: Hospice care and Physical Therapy with Eleazar Tayag
Catch this episode with Eleazar Tayag, PT, DPT, MPH to learn more about hospice care and what services physical therapists can provide in this setting. It's clear that hospice care mainly provides comfort care. but there are a lot more things to think about as well. Eli talked about the difference between hospice to home health and to palliative care. We also talked about the skills that PTs can bring to hospice service not just prescribing DME. Lastly, he shared considerations and practical tips when dealing with hospice patients and family members.
Eleazar previously guested in episode 12 where he talked about home health care in the US. He is the administrator of a home health agency and co-owns a hospice company.
BTR 2: Physical Therapists in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management | Behind the Research
Authors Francis Clarence Chua and Cheryll Didi Nellie Obra discussed further their research entitled "Framework for the Priority Actions of Filipino Physical Therapists in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management." They explained how even entry-level physical therapists can contribute to DRRM efforts and what it would entail to promote and raise awareness of the practice of PTs in this field. Ryan Rolliane Simon, a local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management officer, provided some background on the tasks of the local DRRM council and how physical therapists can participate in it.

Welcome to part two of our conversation with some of the Philippine Physical therapy association's board of officers, Michael Gabilo, PTRP, DHPEd, Juan Doco, PTRP, Christian Rimando, PTRP, MSPT, Lily Bautista, PT, DPT, PTRP, and Patrick Bonnevie, PTRP, MRS.
In this last part of the conversation, we focused on some of the issues that were raised and emerged in a physical therapy group forum. We asked about the boards' insights and stand issues like unlicensed practitioners hired in a physical therapy setting, physical therapy graduates providing physical therapy services, and fee splitting. The officers also emphasized physical therapy values that need to be embodied in our practice like active involvement, advocacy, being inspired, professional accountability and responsibility, and self-worth as a PT. 107: US immigration and visas to work as a PT
Here's another episode from a live podcast interview with Atty. Flomy Javier Diza of Reeves Immigration Law Group. In his episode, Atty. Diza talked about the different types of visas PTs from the Philippines, Canada, and Australia get to work as a PT here in the US. He described non-immigrant and immigrant visas and their eligibility. He also talked about concerns about migrating with the family or if a non-immigrant working visa expires.
