West Didsbury Comedy Festival 2020: New Act Heat 3
When lockdown hit and all shows were cancelled for the foreseeable we weren't too sure what to do next with West Didsbury Comedy Festival. After a few weeks of crying I dusted myself down and decided to get some shows out online and to make the most of the situation. This episode is the audio from our live streamed Heat 3 of the New Act competition and it is an absolute beauty.  I joined MC Chris Brooker throughout a lot of the show as we introduced some brilliant new-ish acts, plus the amazing Micky P Kerr who closed the show.  1) ALEX STRINGER 2) LEW FITZ 3) SILHAM SHAHZAD 4) TOM RHYS EVANS 5) ANDY QUIRK 6) LAURA K MCMAHON 7) PAUL CAMPBELL 8) NATALIE HUSDAN HEADLINER MICKY P KERR Watch the show here: Join us for the final here: Check out the festival page for loads more live comedy!

S2 EP13: TONY COWARDS Tony is a rapidfire gag merchant with an arsenal full of one-liners, for laughs-per-minute he's tough to beat! Renowned on the circuit for his quick wit and beautifully crafted material I am personally a big fan of Tony and his work! Something of a Twitter sensation, Tony's jokes turn up in all sorts of places, from greetings cards to The Times newspaper, even if you've never heard of him there's a good chance that you'll have laughed at one of his gags. We enjoy a lovely rambling conversation which takes us everywhere from dog walking, to family life, static electricity, corona virus, online comedy and bins...mainly bins. The best joke writer around - GQ Magazine  Check Tony out online: Facebook: Twitter: Website: 🤞🤞🤞When you have finished listening to this episode please do give PULL BACK REVEAL a subscribe on the podcast player of choice and follow and share across all social media:  Facebook:  Twitter:  You can also chip in and donate to help us continue making these by going to and just giving the cost of a coffee. LEE JONES is both the owner of ROFL comedy club and also the owner of both WBU and WBF World Boxing Titles.  Its a fascinating discussion about boxing (I know literally nothing about it, but how often do you talk to a world champion!) and how Lee ended up with first a comedy club in Burslam and now currently ROFL in Newcastle Under Lyme. Not too surprisingly Lee is a focused and determined man who likes things just a certain way, and it is that attention to detail and winning mentality that is gaining ROFL rave reviews from both comedians and audiences. A chat almost from the other side of comedy where we look at the impact of Lockdown on his business and what a club owner thinks about the circuit. S2 E10: Boothby Graffoe should have been performing a sold out on opening night of my comedy festival, WEST DIDSBURY COMEDY FESTIVAL. Now for obvious reasons the festival could not go ahead, so rather than be beaten completely we teamed up with and EVO Didsbury to put a mini version of the festival live and online. The audio here is from the live stream, so there are a couple of occasions when we are clearly chatting about something visual. However, this was just too good not share from one of the very best in the business. We even get some songs too! To fill in the gaps head to and watch this video plus other shows that went out over festival weekend. ENJOY! If you don’t know Boothby here are just a few quotes about his greatness! ‘A musical comedy act who is more musical than most musicians, and funnier than most comedians.' - Stewart Lee 'If I had to compare him to anyone, it would be Spike Milligan.' - Omid Djalili "Sings songs that are both beautiful and funny" - The Guardian "'s not fair to call them comedy songs, they are much more than that, there are some i would dare to call genius." -The Times "Buy two copies of his cd because you'll want to share but you won't want to give it away." -The Scotsman "No more music maestro, please!" -The Independent "It's gloriously entertaining and creative stuff, with surreal leaps of imagination, twists of language and intelligent and pithy one-liners all intertwined with poignant yet often hilarious songs and music."

S2 E9: VLADIMIR MCTAVISH! Someone who I consider a great friend through standup. Vlad is an award winning comedian who has been all over TV, radio and smashes it at Edinburgh Festival year after year. It’s a lovely chat with one of the nicest and most generous guys in comedy. Enjoy!

Any Matthews is a stand up comedian living in Edinburgh, based in Glasgow during lockdown and originally for Leigh-On-Sea. We actually manage a fairly normal chat about comedy in the most part, how she got into, some brilliant Edfringe tips, her style and how she writes. We obviously stray into ‘C Word’ territory now and again, but not too much! It’s a really fun episode, Amy is a charming guest and I am on brilliant form haha. Sit back relax and enjoy! Check out Amy on twitter and don’t forget our amazing sponsors

S2 E7: HOLLY BURN is an exceptional comedian, actress and writer. Her mix of stand-up and surreal character work has seen her excel in all mediums from stage to screen and social media sensation. Eddie Izzard has described her as ‘Sexy and bonkers like twin peaks’. You may recognise her from stand out performances on Harry Hills Clubnite and from the viral hit she achieved with her take on ‘73 questions with Victoria Beckham’. Infectious with her energy, enthusiasm and talent Holly was generous in her conversation providing some insight into her own lockdown experience and what the future may bring. I hope you get as much out of this episode as I did recording it! HOLLYS WEBSITE: TWITTER: FACEBOOK: INSTAGRAM: YOUTUBE:

With approaching 30 years experiencing on the circuit, a host of TV credits to his name and the love of his peers, I was confident that this would be a delightful hour in the company of one of the best - and it was! S2 EP5: MILO EDWARDS An episode that doesn't centre around lockdowns or viruses (OK there is a bit of it still!), and where I learn that my vocabulary is slowly diminishing. I chat with Milo about his foray into Russian standup, both on the circuit and on TV, what he would have been doing at Edfringe 2020, his book, the UK circuit and a bit more in between. A really fascinating guy and I hope a welcome escape return to standup chat for all of my beautiful listeners! S2 EP2: POPE LONERGAN - THE LOCKDOWN TAPES This episode I am joined by the marvellous POPE LONERGAN! Pope Lonergan is a comedian, Quaker, drug addict and creator of ‘Pope’s Addiction Clinic’ (“From fearless and funny to heart-stoppingly raw" Evening Standard) and ‘The Care Home Tour’ (“The comedians taking slapstick into new territory” ~ The Guardian). We have a good old natter like two old friends that have never actually met and are both locked in their houses (In Popes case, his parents house) which is exactly what this conversation was. Touching on the virus obviously, how we are coping, will this change peoples material and styles of stand up, a little bit of politics and how keen Pope is to get back out there. Check Pope Lonergan out online at the following: FACEBOOK: TWITTER: TWITCH: If you can give us 5 stars, a positive rating or a following too that would be amazing! Thanks x

S2 EP1: SADIA AZMAT - THE LOCKDOWN TAPES Season 2 launches in style as I am joined by the exceptional stand up and podcaster SADIA AZMAT! As I predicted in the trailer for season 2, the conversation is dominated by Convid-19 and the societal, cultural, political and economic impact it is having and could have in what this could mean for the future of live comedy and the current trend of 'gigging' online.  Its a fascinating chat with one of the most relevant voices currently on the circuit and I can't  ABOUT SADIA AZMAT Sadia Azmat is a British Asian Stand-up comedian and writer from East London.  In 2011, Sadia performed a short show ‘Please Hold - You’re Being Transferred To A UK Based Asian Representative’, featuring on BBC Front Row. In 2014, she followed this with her short performance ‘I Am Not Malala’ nationwide. In 2018 Sadia launched her critically acclaimed BBC podcast “No Country For Young Women” which has enjoyed global success and consistent reviews from audiences and critics alike including 'Best audio 2018' as featured by Miranda Sawyer for the Observer and Apple's Top picks for 2018. The podcast explores Sadia and her friend discovering their roots and where to call home when your place of birth differs from that of your family. MICK FERRY describes himself as ‘A jobbing stand up comedian that is too old for TV’. Of course he is much more than that. A ridiculously talented standup, Mick is admired and respected by everyone from the newest open spot to the biggest names in comedy. Able to switch from surrealism to anecdotal story telling to topical to on the spot observations in a flash, it’s no surprise that he is one of the most in demand comics in the UK. He should also be a household name. As genuinely one of all my all time favourite comedians, I was a bit nervous before this and was determined not to mess it up! I nearly managed it...but sadly not quite. We cover a lot, I’m not going to list exactly what, you will just have to listen. All I will say is if anyone knows who did the material about the frog stuck in ice please let me know. Follow Mick Ferry on twitter: and if you haven’t seen him live right that wrong as soon as you can!

JOHN SCOTT has been a pro stand up comedian for 15 years and it’s all been going very well: Gigging all over the world, hugely respected in the industry for his satirical and topical humour, award winning and arse kicking festival shows. Behind the mask though John has had his struggles. His misdiagnosed mental health condition labelled him schizophrenic for five years before he took himself to hospital. There he came face-to-face with psychologists who had seen his comedy and had decided the performer they were watching was definitely bipolar. The chance encounter meant John was correctly diagnosed and treated. From here John has gone on to get a first class honours degree at the age of 49, found a passion for writing plays that is going ridiculously well and rekindled his romance with live performance. It’s a brilliantly open and honest interview that inspires and takes in all of this remarkable story plus much more. Check out John on social media! TWITTER: WEBSITE:

With his infectious energy and huge stage presence, it is easy to see why Junior Simpson is a circuit favourite. Simpson has a boundless joy and exuberance that has audiences hooked with hilarity. A true observational comic, Simpson finds his humour in the everyday and humdrum with anecdotes of his world travels as a comedian adding a personal originality to his set. Although mischievous and daring, Simpson is never crass or crude and can tailor his set to suit any audience making him a favourite for warm up, TV and corporate work. This is a great conversation with a really intelligent and experienced stand up. We go through the early years, a tragic event that gave him the push and a comment at a wedding that was the final nudge he needed. We explore his career and what he wants to achieve next. We also talk a little politics. It’s a great show and Junior is candid and open all the way through. Be sure to check out Junior on TWITTER: FACEBOOK:

TOBY HADOKE is a stand up comedian, writer, actor, voice over artist, presenter, blogger, podcaster and Dr Who expert and super fan.  Held in high regard in every circle he mixes, Toby has forged a career through diversity. The brilliant (annoying) thing is that he is pretty darn good at everything he does.  From how you pronounce his name, end of the world fantasies/survival strategies, his famed and adored award winning comedy club XS Malarkey, through his career, views on the comedy circuit and current state of the art form, obsessions, insecurities and hopes. An absolutely captivating guest, whose passion for and commitment to all forms of creativity, is abundantly clear and inspirational. A wonderful listen - even if I do say so myself. CRAIG DEELEY is a stand up comedian, actor, improviser and tweeter extraordinaire! Not only does he leave live audiences delighted but he also has the knack of crafting the perfect twitter gag - often gaining thousands of likes and retweets. For my sins, and feel sorry for Craig here, I try out some hastily written jokes of my own on him (mainly on the subject of Rocky films - there is no reason for this) for feedback and critique. Craig discusses the art of writing one liners, his comedy career to date, the comedy he loves and his improv and acting, which brings us round to our mutual adoration for all things Carry On. ATHENA KUGBLENU is a BBC New Comedy Awards finalist and 2017 nominee for the 99 Club Female Comedians’ Bursary. She writes for BBC Radio 4, regularly appears on BBC radio and in 2017 represented the UK at the Johannesburg International Comedy Festival. She has also taken two acclaimed hours to the Edinburgh Fringe, KMT (2017) and Follow the Leader (2018). A brilliant standup that you must watch if you get the chance! In this conversation we have a really interesting chat about the (mis)representation of black comedians in the media, the black comedy scene, prejudices and stereotyping that limit opportunities for black and female comedians and writers and how Athena tackles the issue of racism in her material. It sounds heavy, but it isn’t really and it’s a nice companion piece to the last episode with Conrad Koch. I learn a lot, and she is hilarious, what’s not to like! Check her out online! CONRAD KOCH is South Africa’s top comedy ventriloquist, and possibly the only one. He is a double International Emmy nominated comedian, most famous for the puppet Chester Missing. Chester Missing has his own TV show, 300k twitter followers and has won numerous awards in his own right, including being the first recipient of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Anti-Racism Award. Known for his biting satire, Chester Missing has interviewed most of South Africa’s elite from President down, and has held a number of regular radio and TV slots, and even wrote an award-winning book. Conrad’s live shows have received wide political acclaim. The material has an edge and challenging issues like race and apartheid are tackled head on. In a fascinating, entertaining and educational chat we discuss the South African comedy scene, the current political climate and the role of comedy within it, how some very powerful people have tried to shut Conrad down, what it’s like to be a white South African challenging stereotypes and punching up against the system, and, we discover what Conrad really thinks of his creation Chester Missing. JOHNNY WHITE REALLY- REALLY is difficult to describe, even in his own words. A knot of low self-esteem, self doubt and worry collided with an at times beautifully creative introspection and dreamlike honesty. The laughs at times are in the nuances and sit in the places that laughter should not sit, but it just makes it all the more fascinating. All of this combines for a unique performance and as Chortle put it ‘Quite possibly the most underrated act at this years Edinburgh Fringe’. I am delighted we managed to make this happen and it’s a longer than usual Extras episode.  UNENDING TORMENT: When I was a child, I tried out having an imaginary friend for one afternoon. We went to the park, myself and my imaginary friend, and played chasing games. But soon enough I tired of their company — they were really boring! And so I left them there in the park and came home alone. If you're ever in the park, say hello from me. But enough about all that! Come and see my brand new show, Unending Torment! CONNIE WOOKEY is a musical comedian who has spent time performing both in the US and the UK. Described as ‘one to watch’, she has a quite incredible story to tell at this years Edinburgh Fringe. We chat about her Edfringe show, The US circuit compared to the circuit in London and how she goes about writing for a festival. It’s a really lovely chat with the backdrop of an horrific and scarily coincidental real life event. More than one to watch, she is one to go and see as soon as you can.  DENIED: In February my cousin died in a plane crash. I flew to the funeral. My plane stopped working mid-flight. Good... This is a true story. Not sponsored by Air Canada. Award-winning music-comedy. Part stand-up, part musical parody, part storytelling, Wookey covers US visa immigration issues, men who wink at waitresses, and malfunctioning planes. ***** ( **** ( **** ( **** ( This five-star, fresh and inventive music-comedy is 'superbly performed' ( and promises to make you laugh, cry and build your own miniature plane.  TICKETS:  TWITTER:

EDDY BRIMSON is a one off. A reformed former football hooligan he is one of the most in demand comics on the UK circuit, an actor of small and big screen (he torched Frank Butchers car lot on EastEnders), author of 7 books, documentary maker, TV presenter and now a playwright...with one of THE hits of this years Edfringe, his one man play NAUGHTY BOY.  It’s a fascinating chat that takes us from hooliganism to comedy to theatre. Eddy has some brilliant advice for newer comics on how to approach the industry, plus some views on reviewers. He doesn’t hold back.  NAUGHTY BOY: 'He's a wrong 'un that Joe, a proper wrong 'un.' Still, if you fling enough shit... Nature, nurture. Excuses and secrets. Us and them... A hedonistic weekend brings a chilling conclusion. Maybe Joe is more alive then we'll ever be. This one-man play will pose as many questions as it offers answers. Sometimes there are no excuses. To truly be oneself is both a brave and dangerous thing.  TICKETS:  LIFE COACHING FOR ARSEHOLES: Hi, I'm Eddy Brimson. That's right, I coach life. To losers. Like you. And I do that by cutting through the Bullshit They say "There's no 'i' in team"... But what does that even mean? That's just basic spelling. Let me help you discover your unique individuality, so that you can become exactly the same as me. Oh f*cking yeah. 'Sure-fire laughs, breath-taking confidence and more. This is as close as you can get to the perfect Fringe hour' (Associated Press). SEYMOUR MACE is a legend of the UK standup circuit and Edinburgh Fringe. Hugely admired amongst his peers, Seymour is renowned for his brilliantly offbeat routines and flights of fancy. He has won a tonne of awards and was nominated for the Fosters Comedy Prize in 2015.  It was an honour to speak to him in what was an extremely open and honest conversation covering his latest show, his depression, quitting the comedy circuit, heading to University and his plans for the future.  Seymour Mace is My Name Climb Up My Nose and Sit in My Brain: Join me inside my own head for an all-singing, all-dancing exploration of my f*cked-up brain. I'm going in sane, will I come out insane? All I know is it'll be proper funny alternative comedy, not some mediocre bag of shite mainstream middle-class virtue signalling pile of wank... Anyway, come, don't come, I'm past caring. 'As if the conjoined souls of Vic and Bob have been poured into the body of a tattooed Eric Morecambe' **** (Scotsman). ***** (Times). ***** (  TICKETS:  TWITTER:  *NOTE FOR LISTENERS: The sound is not the greatest! Things were really muffled at Seymour’s end of the line. I’ve done my best to clean it up, but as this is such a raw and frank chat I decided it should go out still. You might need to tinker with the volume whilst you listen but I think it’s worth it. When I’ve got some money to up the production quality I will get this remastered!

EDFRINGE EXTRAS BONUS 5: Another bonus episode chatting with acts on the ground in Edinburgh! This time I speak with 3 very different performers, but with 3 equally amazing shows!  JAY BENNETT: AN AUDIENCE WITH YASMINE DAY. Failed 80s diva and Dorking's most successful pub singer Yasmine Day boldly attempts to revive her flagging career with a last ditch concert extravaganza. Expect unique renditions of 80s power ballads, world-famous originals you've never heard of and (definitely true) celebrity anecdotes. Debut character comedy from Jay Bennett. Playing to ever increasing sold-out shows around the country, Susie is fast becoming one of the hottest tickets in the UK. 'Delivers plenty of chuckles' (Scotsman).  TICKETS: TWITTER: ‪@susie_mccabe ‬ TOM MAYHEW: I, TOM MAYHEW.  Tom Mayhew (BBC New Comedy Award semi-finalist 2018) was unemployed for three years from the age of 18. DAVE JOHNS is a standup, writer & actor and he chats with me about comedy, strange gigs, humour, Edinburgh Fringe, life, meeting movie stars, oh and some little ‘fillum’ called ‘I, Daniel Blake’ that he was in that won him the Palme d’Or.  As one of the most respected and loved comics on the circuit Dave's place in comedy royalty has long been guaranteed. He has given a leg up to some of the biggest stars in comedy. His story is fascinating and inspiring, but throughout Dave remains grounded and real and its a bloody delight. CALLY BEATON is a comedian that I was so excited to talk with! A natural storyteller full of intelligent, distinctive and punchline-rich material, she is currently on top form with an Edinburgh Fringe show already creating a buzz during preview season. Coming to the craft later than most, Cally has an extra dimension to her material and writing and a unique voice on the circuit. During the podcast we cover this along with the theme of her new Edfringe show, the menopause, aging, ambition, balancing a high powered and successful career with creativity, the legend of standup that inspired her to take the leap, comedy and the circuit. It really is a joyous episode, covering some serious topics, but packed to the rafters with baby makes her 2nd ever guest appearance on the podcast! Can you change the world without offending anyone? We talk about her brilliant new Edfringe show 'Knee Jerk', where her humour comes from, how she started out and more. Tony Law is a  genuine legend of alternative comedy. Often discussed in terms of being a 'cult' comedian, he is by his own admission, making up for lost time, but now producing some of his greatest work ever. We have a big chat that was actually spread over 3 phonecalls due to other commitments and really a desire to just keep chatting! There aren't too many stones that we don't kick at, if not completely turn over. This was a tricky one to edit and I have been pretty ruthless to get it down to an acceptable length, whilst not ripping the heart out of it! Therefore  please feel free to attack this in chunks!  Get ready for us talking about his Edinburgh Fringe show "Tony Law Identifies", comedy, standup, sobriety, alcoholism, history, DNA, woke, identity,  plenty of name dropping and some good laughs too. Craig Campbell is a Canadian standup based out of Devon UK. Lauded for his free flowing story telling style Craig has played all over the world to audiences who never quite know what is going to happen next. His career has seen him sword fight Jim Carey, support Frankie Boyle on tour, appear on Russel Howard’s Good News, Michael McKintyre Roadshow and Dave’s One Night Stand. Craig takes us back to the early days, Canada as a new comic, white water rafting as a career, his views on the circuit. Craig by his own admission is a bit of a nightmare on social media, but I am glad actually that we stayed on track talking about him and his background and comedy, rather than feeling a need to be controversial and push buttons. It was a tricky episode to edit down into a show as there was so much content and I had enough to go a few different ways with the theme - we have some bonus material from this one that I will definitely release at a future date.  You can check Craig out at this years Edinburgh Fringe Festival where he will be performing his show Joyful Pain and tickets can be found here:  Also, do give him a follow on social media. Phil Ellis is an award winning standup comedian who excels in delivering the unexpected. A gifted and naturally funny performer with a penchant for the obscure. He is a star of BBC Radio 4. The hit Edinburgh Fringe show Funz & Gamez won him the Fosters Panel Prize, which later went to BBC3. Phil’s TV appearances include The Russell Howard Hour (Sky), Drunk History: UK (Comedy Central), as well as writing and performing credits on BBC Three’s The Tapeface Tapes. Phil also co-wrote three comedy shorts- Phil’s Ill- for Dave.  Phil is without doubt a rising star and he has just finished series 2 of his very own BBC Radio 4 sitcom, Phil Ellis Is Trying. Phil and Kev are old friends and the conversation flows from memories of each other’s early material, to how Phils anarchic style fit the comedy club circuit, his big break, BBC Radio 4 recording with heroes like Johnny Vegas, Alexi Sayle, Lee Mack and others, and plenty of giggling. We even talk about Leanne. You can catch Phil at Edinburgh with his show Au Revoir. Tickets here:  Hunt him down on Twitter: Series one of Phil Ellis Is Trying is up on BBC iPlayer Radio.
