West Didsbury Comedy Festival 2020: New Act Heat 3

When lockdown hit and all shows were cancelled for the foreseeable we weren't too sure what to do next with West Didsbury Comedy Festival.

After a few weeks of crying I dusted myself down and decided to get some shows out online and to make the most of the situation.

This episode is the audio from our live streamed Heat 3 of the New Act competition and it is an absolute beauty.

I joined MC Chris Brooker throughout a lot of the show as we introduced some brilliant new-ish acts, plus the amazing Micky P Kerr who closed the show.

Tony is a rapidfire gag merchant with an arsenal full of one-liners, for laughs-per-minute he's tough to beat! Renowned on the circuit for his quick wit and beautifully crafted material I am personally a big fan of Tony and his work! Something of a Twitter sensation, Tony's jokes turn up in all sorts of places, from greetings cards to The Times newspaper, even if you've never heard of him there's a good chance that you'll have laughed at one of his gags.
We enjoy a lovely rambling conversation which takes us everywhere from dog walking, to family life, static electricity, corona virus, online comedy and bins...mainly bins.

LEE JONES

LEE JONES is both the owner of ROFL comedy club and also the owner of both WBU and WBF World Boxing Titles.
Its a fascinating discussion about boxing (I know literally nothing about it, but how often do you talk to a world champion!) and how Lee ended up with first a comedy club in Burslam and now currently ROFL in Newcastle Under Lyme.
Not too surprisingly Lee is a focused and determined man who likes things just a certain way, and it is that attention to detail and winning mentality that is gaining ROFL rave reviews from both comedians and audiences. A chat almost from the other side of comedy where we look at the impact of Lockdown on his business and what a club owner thinks about the circuit.

S2 E10: Boothby Graffoe should have been performing a sold out on opening night of my comedy festival, WEST DIDSBURY COMEDY FESTIVAL. Now for obvious reasons the festival could not go ahead, so rather than be beaten completely we teamed up with Jokepit.com and EVO Didsbury to put a mini version of the festival live and online. Pope Lonergan is a comedian, Quaker, drug addict and creator of ‘Pope’s Addiction Clinic’ (“From fearless and funny to heart-stoppingly raw" Evening Standard) and ‘The Care Home Tour’ (“The comedians taking slapstick into new territory” ~ The Guardian).

MICK FERRY

MICK FERRY describes himself as ‘A jobbing stand up comedian that is too old for TV’. Of course he is much more than that. A ridiculously talented standup, Mick is admired and respected by everyone from the newest open spot to the biggest names in comedy. Able to switch from surrealism to anecdotal story telling to topical to on the spot observations in a flash, it’s no surprise that he is one of the most in demand comics in the UK. He should also be a household name. As genuinely one of all my all time favourite comedians, I was a bit nervous before this and was determined not to mess it up! I nearly managed it...but sadly not quite. We cover a lot, I’m not going to list exactly what, you will just have to listen. All I will say is if anyone knows who did the material about the frog stuck in ice please let me know. JOHN SCOTT

JOHN SCOTT has been a pro stand up comedian for 15 years and it’s all been going very well: Gigging all over the world, hugely respected in the industry for his satirical and topical humour, award winning and arse kicking festival shows. Behind the mask though John has had his struggles. His misdiagnosed mental health condition labelled him schizophrenic for five years before he took himself to hospital. There he came face-to-face with psychologists who had seen his comedy and had decided the performer they were watching was definitely bipolar.
The chance encounter meant John was correctly diagnosed and treated. From here John has gone on to get a first class honours degree at the age of 49, found a passion for writing plays that is going ridiculously well and rekindled his romance with live performance. JUNIOR SIMPSON

With his infectious energy and huge stage presence, it is easy to see why Junior Simpson is a circuit favourite. Simpson has a boundless joy and exuberance that has audiences hooked with hilarity. CRAIG DEELEY is a stand up comedian, actor, improviser and tweeter extraordinaire! Not only does he leave live audiences delighted but he also has the knack of crafting the perfect twitter gag - often gaining thousands of likes and retweets.

For my sins, and feel sorry for Craig here, I try out some hastily written jokes of my own on him (mainly on the subject of Rocky films - there is no reason for this) for feedback and critique. Craig discusses the art of writing one liners, his comedy career to date, the comedy he loves and his improv and acting, which brings us round to our mutual adoration for all things Carry On.

ATHENA KUGBLENU

ATHENA KUGBLENU is a BBC New Comedy Awards finalist and 2017 nominee for the 99 Club Female Comedians’ Bursary. She writes for BBC Radio 4, regularly appears on BBC radio and in 2017 represented the UK at the Johannesburg International Comedy Festival. She has also taken two acclaimed hours to the Edinburgh Fringe, KMT (2017) and Follow the Leader (2018). A brilliant standup that you must watch if you get the chance!
In this conversation we have a really interesting chat about the (mis)representation of black comedians in the media, the black comedy scene, prejudices and stereotyping that limit opportunities for black and female comedians and writers and how Athena tackles the issue of racism in her material. It sounds heavy, but it isn’t really and it’s a nice companion piece to the last episode with Conrad Koch. I learn a lot, and she is hilarious, what’s not to like!

CONRAD KOCH is South Africa’s top comedy ventriloquist, and possibly the only one. He is a double International Emmy nominated comedian, most famous for the puppet Chester Missing. Chester Missing has his own TV show, 300k twitter followers and has won numerous awards in his own right, including being the first recipient of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Anti-Racism Award. Known for his biting satire, Chester Missing has interviewed most of South Africa’s elite from President down, and has held a number of regular radio and TV slots, and even wrote an award-winning book. JOHNNY WHITE REALLY- REALLY is difficult to describe, even in his own words. A knot of low self-esteem, self doubt and worry collided with an at times beautifully creative introspection and dreamlike honesty. The laughs at times are in the nuances and sit in the places that laughter should not sit, but it just makes it all the more fascinating. All of this combines for a unique performance and as Chortle put it ‘Quite possibly the most underrated act at this years Edinburgh Fringe’. I am delighted we managed to make this happen and it’s a longer than usual Extras episode.

CONNIE WOOKEY is a musical comedian who has spent time performing both in the US and the UK. Described as ‘one to watch’, she has a quite incredible story to tell at this years Edinburgh Fringe. We chat about her Edfringe show, The US circuit compared to the circuit in London and how she goes about writing for a festival. It’s a really lovely chat with the backdrop of an horrific and scarily coincidental real life event. More than one to watch, she is one to go and see as soon as you can.

SEYMOUR MACE is a legend of the UK standup circuit and Edinburgh Fringe. Hugely admired amongst his peers, Seymour is renowned for his brilliantly offbeat routines and flights of fancy. He has won a tonne of awards and was nominated for the Fosters Comedy Prize in 2015.
