Lights Out - The Sea
This week, we have The Sea, an episode of Lights Out, written by Arch Oboler. This episode aired on March 2, 1943. Lights Out was created by Wyllis Cooper in 1934, first airing over WENR in Chicago. The show went national in 1935, broadcast over NBC. Oboler took over as the show runner in 1936. He left the show in 1938 and NBC cancelled the program in 1939. Suspense - The Big Shot with Burt Lancaster
This week we have “The Big Shot,” an episode of Suspense, one of the most popular shows of the old-time radio era. Suspense aired over CBS from 1942 to 1962. This episode first aired on September 9, 1948. It is based on the short story “Big Shot” by Davis Dresser, which first appeared in the October 22, 1938, issue of Argosy. Under his own name and his Brett Halliday pseudonym, Dresser wrote hundreds of stories for the pulps and crime digests. Adventures of Philip Marlowe - The Face to Forget
This week, we have an episode of The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, The Face to Forget. It first aired on June 14, 1950, over CBS. Gerald Mohr stars as Marlowe. The series ran from 1948-1950 on CBS. An earlier version, starring Van Heflin, aired as a summer replacement in 1947 on NBC. Philip Marlowe, of course, was the creation of pulp legend Raymond Chandler. Marlowe was introduced in the 1939 novel The Big Sleep, although Chandler would use many of his earlier Black Mask short stories as source materials for his later Marlowe books. X Minus One - Junkyard by Clifford D. Simak
This week, we have Junkyard, an episode of X Minus One that first aired on February 22, 1956. The episode is based on the short story of the same name by Clifford D. Simak, first published in the May 1953 issue of Galaxy Science Fiction. X Minus One was broadcast over NBC from 1955 to 1958, producing more than 125 episodes. The Sealed Book - Stranger in the House
This week we have “Stranger in the House,” the May 6, 1945, episode of The Sealed Book. The Sealed Book aired 26 episodes from March 18 to September 9, 1945. This episode was written by Robert Arthur, who wrote dozens of stories for the pulps. He was also a prolific writer for many radio series and scripted several episodes of television’s Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He also wrote mystery books for a young adult audience, most notably the Three Investigators series and was the editor of many of the short story collections credited to Hitchcock in the 1960s.
