In this new episode of Timmy Talks, our host, Ella Domingo, has a discussion with Amy and Ananya about the role of music, art and the humanities in the fields of medicine and global health. 


Bios:


Amy Brandfonbrener

Amy has a BM in viola performance from The Curtis Institute of Music and a MM in performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. She is originally from Chicago and has lived in West Lafayette since 1997. She was a member of the award winning Harrington String Quartet for 12 years in residence at WTAMU and in addition to being adjunct faculty at PU maintains a private teaching studio and an active free-lance career in  chamber, solo and orchestral music.

Ananya Tadikonda

Ananya is a senior currently studying Nutrition Science at Purdue University. She is originally from Carmel, Indiana and was involved as a violinist in orchestra throughout high school. While continuing the arts in college, she focused on advocating for the arts and their importance for understanding healthcare throughout her involvement during Timmy Global Health. Currently, Ananya works as a medical scribe in the Emergency Department and hopes to dedicate her career efforts towards practicing medicine. Ananya will be starting medical school at the IU School of Medicine this upcoming Fall.

Ella Domingo:

Ella Domingo is a second-year honors pharmacy student in the Purdue College of Pharmacy and serves as Timmy Global Health’s Global Health Roundtable Chair. She recently completed a national association management internship with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists this summer and is involved in Purdue's Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists as the President-Elect for the 2020-21 academic year. Through Timmy, she is a Get Onboard Active Living team leader for Indiana University Health where she teaches young students about healthy living through nutrition and exercise. She is an outpatient pharmacy intern at Franciscan Health, a member of Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society, a Presentation Lead Ambassador for Purdue's Honors College Ambassadors, and a Purdue Student Advisory Board Vice Provost for Student Life At-Large Representative. Outside of school, she is a vocalist at St. Thomas Aquinas, enjoys singing and playing different instruments, and loves running and fitness. After pharmacy school, Ella plans on pursuing a residency and is interested in cardiology and health-system pharmacy. She looks forward to serving her future patients and colleagues through interprofessional collaboration and patient-centered care, fulfilling her passions for science and human connection.

In this episode, we discuss stories and perspectives on day-to-day experiences, culture, and connection from the Purdue Timmy Ecuador Medical Brigade with trip leaders Anne Marie and Max. We also dive into the importance of sustainable healthcare and how we can continue applying this model in the future.


More about Anne Marie:

Anne Marie is a senior at Purdue this year studying Global Studies and Spanish with plans to attend medical school after undergrad. She is also pursuing a Medical Humanities certificate through the College of Liberal Arts which she especially appreciates for keeping her in touch with the human side of medicine. Anne Marie hopes to earn her Masters in Public Health alongside an MD or DO to work in community and/or global health with an emphasis on women’s reproductive health. She plans to spend the following academic year in Spain continuing to master Spanish before beginning medical school. Anne Marie has been involved in Purdue’s chapter of Timmy Global Health since her sophomore year, acting as a general member, an Ecuador trip goer, and an Ecuador trip leader. Outside of her academic pursuits, Anne Marie enjoys meeting new people, trying new foods, and traveling to new places whenever she has the chance.


More about Max:

Max is a junior at Purdue studying Medical Laboratory Sciences. He plans on working in medical research while gaining experience to head to P.A. school. Max has been involved with Timmy Global Health at Purdue for three years, serving as a general member, an Ecuador trip goer, and an Ecuador trip leader. Outside of Purdue, Max enjoys snowboarding, traveling to new places, and reading.

More About Dr. S-S:

Dr. Servaty-Seib is a licensed psychologist and Professor in the Doctoral Program in Counseling Psychology.  She is currently serving as Interim Associate Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning and Associate Dean of Student Life in the Honors College at Purdue University. She is well published in the areas of young adult bereavement and suicide, social support and grief, and the use of loss as a broad model for conceptualizing significant life events.


More About Meghan:

Meghan Tucker is a Junior in Industrial Engineering here at Purdue University and serves as the Director of Development for Timmy Global Health. Through Timmy, she has also participated in a service brigade to Atlanta, GA and been involved with various committees. Outside of school, she is a member of Phi Mu fraternity and enjoys painting in her leisure time. Meghan is passionate about utilizing Industrial Engineering principles in healthcare systems to better serve those seeking health services. She is particularly interested in using lean strategies to optimize the production of health products as well as eliminating barriers in distribution to improve access.

More about Dr. Jason Parry:

Jason Parry earned a PhD in Comparative Literature at the State University of New York - Binghamton in 2017 before joining the faculty of the Purdue University the following year. Beyond teaching courses in the Honors College at Purdue, he is also the assistant director of a new learning community called R1: Research Accelerator that aims to fast-track Purdue students’ involvement in research on campus.

More about Dr. Gonzalvo:

Jasmine D. Gonzalvo, PharmD, BC-ADM, CDCES, FADCES is a Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice in the College of Pharmacy at Purdue University. She is the Director of the Center for Health Equity and Innovation at Purdue. Her practice for Eskenazi Health involves the provision of Cardiovascular Risk Reduction services in an underserved population with mental illness and for those who primarily speak Spanish. Her research interests relate to community health workers, cardiovascular risk reduction in underserved populations, integration of the Spanish language into practice and academic settings, and diabetes self-management education and support in the pharmacy setting. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists. She is the current Chair for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education Specialists. She is active in advocacy efforts at the State and Federal levels. In 2018, she was appointed to the National Clinical Care Commission.
