Purple Radio - Housing Crisis Investigation Trailer

Purple Radio - Housing Crisis Investigation Trailer

This trailer summarises the main themes we explored, and the groups we interviewed, during our investigation over the past year. If this trailer intrigues you, please look out for our following episodes on Spotify or Apple Music, which go into greater depth on each particular area explored.

This investigation began on Halloween Night 2018 after we discovered Durham students were queuing for over 13 hours for student housing for the following academic year.

The investigation was to provide a platform for Durham students to voice their opinions and experiences with the housing situation.

The student body opinion showed a general consensus that a change was desperately needed, but they were unsure of how to alleviate the issue. We contacted all the estate agents within Durham and  J. W. Wood, Frampton and Roebuck, and Bill Free Homes agreed to interview with us.

We explored the situation from their angle, and from these interviews, we learnt of a 'Residential Landlord Association' which had been formed in York to tackle a similar student housing issue. This scheme brought the majority of landlords in the city to agree upon moving their student housing release date till second term, allowing students more time to form social groups and avoid the stress of the 'house hunt' from the first few weeks of university.

We proposed this concept to the three estate agents who agreed to speak to us, who all gave their verbal confirmation that this is something they would be in favour of.

We approached the Durham MP, Roberta-Blackman Wood, who provided her insight from a local and legislative perspective on housing within Durham. Ultimately, she agreed that she would also support action to move the student housing release till second term.

Our investigation is still very much on-going. One year on, Halloween Night 2019,  and things have only gotten worse. Students were now queuing for over 20 hours and one flew 600 miles from her year abroad in Paris to sign for a house.

We will be forwarding our investigation to the University board soon. Also, we will be following up on the estate agents to encourage them to initiate discussions to actively alleviate the housing crisis.
