Sebastian Lelio's "A Fantastic Woman" (2017)
Merry Christmas Eve!
Why is it so important to have an authentic, positive representation of an underrepresented identity in film/media? Listen in as LINNA and Nic discuss “A Fantastic Woman”. Sebastián Lelio’s film follows Marina, a trans singer (played by the consultant to the film and all-around fantastic actress/singer, Dani Vega), as she runs the gauntlet of abuse all in the name of claiming the grief she deserves to express for her deceased lover. We discuss color theory, fantastical plot devices, and symbolism in this masterwork of a character study. We discuss why films like “A Fantastic Woman” are vital, how authorship can be interpreted, the new wave of queer women, and our season-long theme of water and femininity. Points to anyone who tallies up how often we say “fantastic”! Thank you for tuning in to this season, we love having all of you here with us, and stay tuned for more!

Desiree Akhavan's "Appropriate Behavior" (2014)
Can a toxic relationship at the center of a romantic comedy still make it romantic? Find out as LINNA and Nic discuss Desiree Akhavan’s debut, “Appropriate Behavior”. The film follows Akhavan as Shirin, a closeted bisexual as she finds her way to move on from a breakup. We discuss unlikeable characters, Lena Dunham comparisons, Bi and Iranian-American representation, and our theories on why comedy and queer women narratives shifted from the 2000s to 2010s. Thank you for tuning in, and stay tuned for more! Our final episode on this season of the new wave in queer woman cinema will be released on Christmas Eve this Thursday, 12/24.

Alice Wu's "Saving Face" (2004)
Do you know what saving face means? You’ll soon find out how deep that meaning goes and how it applies to family, honor, and tradition. This is “Saving Face”. Listen in as LINNA and Nic discuss closeted Wil, a Chinese-American woman finding love in New York City while also dealing with her scandal-riddled mom. We discuss representation, queer reclamation, and all things Alice Wu. Thank you for tuning in and stay tuned for more! New episodes released every Tuesday and Thursday.

Jaime Babbit's "But I'm A Cheerleader" (1999)
Conversion therapy! Coming out! Metaphors for AIDS and gender roles! Take a listen to LINNA and Nic discuss “But I’m A Cheerleader”, a film about cheerleader Megan (Natasha Lyonne), who comes to terms with her sexuality and finds love at a conversion camp. We’ll discuss the subversion of gender binaries, sexuality, identity, and the right balance of satire and seriousness when portraying gay conversion camps! Thank you for tuning in, and stay tuned for more! New episodes released every Tuesday and Thursday.
Graphic credit: @theflimsyartist
Cheryl Dunye's "The Watermelon Woman" (1996)
Who is the Watermelon Woman? Listen in and join LINNA and Nic to find out. Cheryl Dunye’s “The Watermelon Woman” tracks a filmmaker’s documentary exploits in finding out who the elusive Watermelon Woman is. Along the way, romance and comedy take form. Listen to us discuss the cishet whitewashing of history and the gatekeeping within academia. Also, we gush over Dunye and the work she has created. Thank you for tuning in, and stay tuned for more! New episodes released every Tuesday and Thursday.
Graphic credit: @theflimsyartist
Chantal Akerman's "Je, Tu, Il, Elle" (1974)
The first episode of season two has arrived! Listen in and join LINNA and Nic in their discussion of Chantal Akerman’s “Je, Tu, Il, Elle”. This film is all about a queer woman’s desire and reclaiming the queer woman’s body. We discuss eating sugar, isolation, and desire (quite topical right now), and why queer women should write and direct queer women love scenes. Thank you for tuning in, and stay tuned for more! New episodes released every Tuesday and Thursday.

Isaac Julien's "Young Soul Rebels" (1991)
Can punk and funk go together? The answer to that question is answered in our final episode of the season. Listen in as LINNA and Nic discuss “Young Soul Rebels”. Isaac Julien’s film follows two disc jockeys, Chris and Caz (Valentine Nonyela and Mo Sesay), as they try to break into mainstream London radio, as well as solve the murder of one of their friends, TJ. We discuss all things British in 1977, the power of tender male friendships, gatekeeping, and the importance of representation in New Queer Cinema. As we near Election Day here in the United States, we urge our listeners to use their voice to vote and create positive change in the world. Thank you for tuning in, and stay tuned for more!
Gus Van Sant's "My Own Private Idaho" (1991)
Have a nice day. That’s how “My Own Private Idaho” ends, but we probably shouldn’t get too ahead of ourselves! Listen in as LINNA and Nic discuss one of the most well-known New Queer Cinema films. We follow Mike Waters (River Phoenix) and Scott Favor (Keanu Reeves) as they bond and traverse the streets of the Pacific Northwest as hustlers. Their friendship takes them not only across the country but also to Europe as they search for what home means to them. Is “My Own Private Idaho” high art or mainstream New Queer Cinema? Find out! Thank you for tuning in, and stay tuned for more! Our final episode on this season of transgressive gays in New Queer Cinema will be released this Friday, 10/30.
Derek Jarman's "Edward II" (1991)
Historians will say they were roommates. You may have heard of Christopher Marlowe’s play “Edward II”, but did you know that the long-ago King of England was a bit queer? Derek Jarman retells the ill-fated king’s story through a queer lens, reclaiming queer identity not just for King Edward II, but for all queer royalty. Listen in as LINNA and Nic discuss historical accuracy, queer anachronisms, and all things Tilda Swinton, the ultimate queer muse. ALSO, we have a surprise guest: Nic’s cat! Thank you for tuning in, and stay tuned for more! New episodes released every Wednesday and Friday.
Tom Kalin's "Swoon" (1992)
Gay sex! Murder! You’ve seen the films based on the infamous Leopold and Loeb trial, but what did those films fail to mention? The killers were gay?! Listen to LINNA and Nic discuss "Swoon", the film that doesn’t hold back in its queer depiction of the infamous killers who also happened to be lovers. We’ll discuss what queer identity reclamation looks like and the complexity of queer relationships. Don’t forget sadomasochism! Thank you for tuning in, and stay tuned for more! New episodes released every Wednesday and Friday.
Todd Haynes' "Poison" (1991)
Who’s ready for a little Poison? Join LINNA and Nic, and listen in. Todd Haynes’ Poison is a film told in three separate stories: “Hero”, “Horror”, and “Homo”. Each story is an homage to a different genre, and each story meditates on queer identity and how mainstream, heteronormative society views this identity. What are the effects of society on a queer person? Listen in and find out! Thank you for tuning in, and stay tuned for more! New episodes released every Wednesday and Friday.
Gregg Araki's "The Living End" (1992)
First episode has arrived! Join LINNA and Nic in celebrating their inaugural episode with a listen. Gregg Araki’s The Living End follows a drifter and a film critic as they hit the road as gay lovers who meditate on their HIV positive status and hatred towards mainstream, heteronormative society. Hailed as the gay Thelma and Louise, The Living End embodies the anger and apathy towards a society and a life that did not care for queer identity. Thank you for tuning in, and stay tuned for more! New episodes released every Wednesday and Friday.
What is New Queer Cinema?
If you haven’t heard of New Queer Cinema, then lucky for you! Listen to LINNA in "What is New Queer Cinema?" to learn more about the film movement that is considered one of the most vital to modern-day queer representation in film, as well as one of the most essential to the media landscape we have today. And stay tuned for our first episode to be released Wednesday, 10/14.
QUEER QUEUE PROMO
Welcome listeners! LINNA and Nic are proud to announce their new podcast and its first season. For those interested in all things queer film-related, this is the new podcast for you. For our first season, we will be diving deep into the film movement known as New Queer Cinema -- specifically the prominent, transgressive gay films of New Queer Cinema. Join us as we critically analyze films such as Todd Haynes' Poison and Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho. Stay tuned for our first episode, Gregg Araki's The Living End, which will be released on 10/14.
