This is a "podcast" made to supplement the philosophical readings for World Philosophies (Online) at the University of Cincinnati.

This week I am joined by Dr. Johnathan Flowers to discuss Chapter 14 of Japanese Environmental Philosophy edited by J. Baird Callicott and James McRae. The chapter Nondualism after Fukushima? Tracing Dōgen’s Teaching vis-à-vis Nuclear Disaster was written by Dr. Masato Ishida. Dr. Flowers is a philosopher who specializes in Japanese aesthetics, American pragmatism, and the affective grounding of experience.

Part 1 begins with some brief introductions, an overview of some of the key concepts of the chapter in relation to other ideas covered this semester, and the first Toolkit Quotes and Questions. Part 2 continues our exploration of Toolkit Quotes and Questions and wraps up with a few notable takeaways from the chapter. Ugoretz is an anthropologist who specializes on Japanese religious movements both in and outside of Japan. She has a new YouTube series Eat, Pray, Anime, where she talks about the intersection of Japanese culture, religion, and society.

Our conversation begins with brief introductions and some discussion of some basic Shinto concepts and proceeds to explore select quotes from the text using the Good Thinker's Toolkit developed by Dr. Thomas Jackson

This is the first episode prepared for the World Philosophies AIST/PHIL 1005 course at the University of Cincinnati for Spring 2021.

Here I, Jonathan McKinney (he / him), introduce the basic ethos of the course with the help of Dr. Melissa Jacquart (she/her). This involves a brief discussion of teaching methodology and an exploration of the first text of the semester found on Canvas. It is a very short reading about how to approach ideas from another discipline or culture.
