The 2.0-liter sends 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque through a CVT, whereas the turbocharged 1.6-liter mill sends 190 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic.

Mazda is responsible for some of the most beloved sports cars, race cars, and powertrains to ever hit the pavement. While enthusiast cars have helped put Mazda on the map, and in the hearts of sports car fans around the world, crossovers sell. It only makes sense for Mazda to take its popular CX-5 and give it a slightly larger alternative. That’s exactly what the CX-50 brings to the table. The bones of the CX-5 stick around, but the larger shell comes with a longer wheelbase and slightly heavier curb weight. Powering this CX-50 is the same powerplant you’ll find under the CX-5’s hood. All CX-50s pack 2.5-liter I4s under the hood. Base powerplants breathe naturally and send 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. Mazda also offers a turbocharged version of this 2.5-liter I4, which cranks the power to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque with 87 octane fuel, or 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque with 93 octane gasoline.

The Acura Integra Type S might be the most talked about performance Acura now that the NSX is off the assembly line, but it’s not the only hopped-up Acura sedan in the company’s lineup. Acura’s TLX entered the Acura stable in ’14, with its second, and current, generation showing up in 2021. Adding to the second generation’s performance chops was a Type S model. The TLX Type S packs a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 under its hood that sends 355 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque through a 10-speed automatic transmission. Land Rover’s Defender might be carrying a lot of water for the brand, but the company’s luxe on-and-off roader Range Rover lineup is also putting in the work. Taking the space of Lincoln's discontinued MKC, the Lincoln Corsair works as an entry point into Ford’s legacy luxury arm. While the Corsair name was used as a highly-optioned Edsel, and as a sedan in other markets, Lincoln’s bite at the Corsair apple helps build on both the marques and the nameplates legacy. As part of the company’s push to do away with its Mark naming conventions, the Lincoln Corsair helps the company navigate the high seas of the luxury compact crossover market. Giving this reborn compact crossover a full name might help with brand appeal down the line, but it also helps separate the similarly navigation-themed products from each other in Lincoln’s lineup. While a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 powers the entry-level Corsair Premier and Reserve models, sitting atop the Corsair hierarchy is the plug-in hybrid Grand Touring model. This PHEV blends a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle I4 with a CVT and an electric motor to net 266 hp combined.

The Audi RS5 is closing in on two decades inside Audi’s coupe and sedan lineup. Based on the Audi A5, the RS5 follows the same formula as its competition: take a nice, compact executive sedan, and turn it into a brutal track machine. While this hopped-up Audi is traditionally competing with legends like the BMW M3 and the Mercedes-AMG C63, the move to crossovers has changed the A5 and the RS5’s scale. Still, this latest RS5 packs a 2.9-liter V6 under the hood that sends 444 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission and into the famed Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Making things even more interesting, Audi will sell this with a pair of doors, or as a four-door sedan that features a lift-back cargo opening.

The towing and torque wars are here, and we’re all in the trenches. Ford unleashed an updated PowerStroke diesel in 2020 and moved the production-grade heavy-duty diesel world into four figures worth of torque. Naturally, Ram punched back with a more potent Cummins that sent 1,075 lb-ft worth of torque to the driveline. Well, for ’23 Ford stuffed a high-output version of its PowerStroke diesel under the hood of its revamped Super Duty trucks and pushed the torque figure to the moon. The star of the latest-generation Super Duty’s show is that high-output, 6.7-liter PowerStroke V8 that sends 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque through a 10-speed automatic transmission and to the rear or all four wheels. In a special configuration, this latest Super Duty rig packs enough muscle to tug 40,000 pounds.

The McLaren 720S is a fascinating car. The aesthetically integrated aero in the nose, the gobs of performance from the 4.0-liter V8, and its minimalist interior all add up to a treat to drive. Though, as McLaren shows with the 750S, there’s always room for improvement. The 750S takes the 720S and squeezes 30 more hp out of the turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 bringing the total to 740 hp. Adding to the power are revised suspension pieces, redesigned bodywork, and a larger rear wing. According to the folks at McLaren, the 750S can sprint to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and 124 mph in only 7.2 seconds and runs through its seven-speed automatic transmission before hitting its 206 mph top speed.

The Ford Maverick might have been the answer for a lot of compact pickup fans' woes. The small pickup’s low price, small size, and useful bed have shaped up to create long wait times for prospective customers. Available on all-wheel-drive equipped and 2.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Maverick XLT and Lariats, this option package does limit your Maverick choices but makes up for it with a more capable rig off paved roads.

The era of the crossover is here. Once the sedan was king, then the wagon became the family hauler, and then the minivan. Now, it’s time for crossovers. Naturally, that means automakers will keep finding spaces to throw new models and leverage existing names. When it comes to Toyota, it’s hard to find a name that resonates more than Corolla or Camry, which makes one of them a perfect addition to the crossover lineup. Toyota’s Corolla Cross leverages the existing love for the Corolla’s legacy, but gives shoppers, well, a crossover.

Mazda approached its crossover and SUV naming conventions from a different angle. The company stuck with its alphanumeric system that its customers have grown to learn. Of course, the CX-5 is no spring chicken when it comes to the crossover sales sheet and has been in Mazda’s lineup for over a decade.

The Morgan Motor Company discontinued its legendary 3-Wheeler a few years back, but it would be hard for Morgan to move on without a three-wheeled machine in its roster. After nearly a decade, the Scion FR-S or Toyota 86 saw a successor. Now planted formerly under the Toyota banner, the sports coupe has formally entered its second generation. The second-gen Toyota 86 adopts the Gazoo Racing naming conventions and fixes some of the problems customers felt with the first-generation models. The team at Toyota and Subaru increased engine displacement and massaged the tuning to help overcome the older model’s lack of midrange power. The Dodge Challenger is officially gone. Celebrating its departure, Dodge and Chrysler rolled out special Last Call models of its popular Challenger, Charger and 300 models to celebrate what was and put an exclamation mark on a run of reborn muscle machines. Spread across the R/T Scat Pack and Hellcat models, Dodge is sending away its Charger and Challenger in style, with the packages nodding at popular models of yesteryear. One of the models slated for the Challenger is dubbed Swinger, which packs a special stripe, limited colors and an array of special styling features. While this limited production Swinger added some interesting features to the wide-body Challenger Scat Pack, the bones were the same. Under this Challenger’s hood is a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 that sends 485 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque through either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic. Like the Cadillac Escalade from a few weeks ago, GMC’s body-on-frame SUV is predictably posh on its upmarket trim variants. Also like Cadillac’s Escalade, the GMC Yukon is based on the General Motors body-on-frame platform that underpins a Chevrolet analog. Like the rest of this GM family of SUVs, the Yukon entered its fifth generation in ’21 and ditched its rear stick axle. Now sporting an independent rear suspension, the Yukon Denali’s air suspension makes for an even smoother ride. The Yukon Denali comes with 6.2 liters of V8 power under the hood, which sends 420 hp and 460 lb-ft through a ten-speed transmission. Of course, the entry-level Yukon models come with the smaller 5.3-liter V8 as standard equipment, but the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel I6.

The low-priced car is all but dead. However, taking its place is the low-priced compact crossover. At least, relatively low priced -- the days of the $6,000 brand new car are all but memories. Starting south of $25,000, Buick’s Envista takes the spot of Buick’s new entry point. Sharing hardware with the similarly new Chevrolet Trax, Buick’s latest crossover separates itself from its low-priced stablemate by offering a coupe-ified shape. Leaning more on exterior styling, the Envista borrows some styling elements from the aptly named Wildcat concept car, like the front fascia design. Though, like the Trax, this Envista packs a 1.2-liter turbocharged I3 that sends 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque.

Honda’s Civic Type R made a big splash when it launched in the late 1990s. The Civic Type R gave sport compact buyers around the world a potent front-wheel drive hatchback and fueled the growing interest in Japanese imports. The only problem: It didn’t come to the United States. No, instead Honda decided to shuffle its sport compact onto U.S. shorelines under the Acura banner. This low-production Integra Type R was obviously popular and now commands a premium as a collector’s piece. Fortunately, in 2017, Honda did bring the Civic Type R to the U.S. and finally gave Honda fans the option to easily and legally own Honda’s hot Civic. When Acura brought back the Integra, it was only a matter of time before the company ushered in its Type R analog, and it’s finally here. The 2024 Acura Integra Type S borrows the powertrain and hard points from Honda’s Civic Type R but gives it a more road-friendly makeover. The Integra Type S doesn’t have the heavily bolstered seats or large rear wing, but it does have more power than its Honda counterpoint.

The Kia EV6’s been around for a couple of years, with its debut taking place a couple of years ago. In fact, we’ve already taken the EV6 through the Quick Spin wringer a year ago. Well, if the base-power EV6 doesn’t cut the mustard, Kia’s has a battery-electric hot rod in its stable. Dubbed the Kia EV6 GT, this GT variant does share most of the sheet metal with its more pedestrian sibling but does have different front and rear fascias. More importantly, the EV6 GT sends 577 hp to the wheels with a pair of electric motors. This dual-motor GT comes standard with all-wheel drive because of the front- and rear-mounted electric motors. The EV6 GT shares the battery with its less powerful counterpart, which does affect your real-world range, and offers the least amount of range in the lineup. Though, the brutal acceleration might make up for the lack of range.

The Toyota Supra has become a Japanese performance icon since it formally spun off from the similarly iconic Celica in the 1980s. Most notably, the fourth-generation or A80 chassis Toyota Supra has cemented itself as a cultural icon with its starring role in The Fast and the Furious, its inclusion in racing video games, and its success on the race track. The Supra did fall out of the Toyota lineup before the new millennium but was reborn after more than 20 years on the backburner. Honda is ushering in the 11th generation of its famed Accord with the 2023 model year, and this might be the year when the hybrid finally takes the reins. Honda’s 11th-gen Accord brings a totally restyled exterior that follows the styling direction seen with the new Civic and CR-V, with thin lamps and a more minimalist design. Inside the Accord, you’re met with a similarly redesigned interior, which follows the same clean and wide styling seen, again, on the new Civic. Though, unlike the Civic, under the Accord’s hood is a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle I4 mill that works with a dual-motor hybrid system. This system is good for 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. Of course, the 1.5-liter turbocharged I4 is also available, which mates to a CVT, if you want to forgo the hybrid system. The turbocharged mill does make less power at 192 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque, though.

Mercedes-Benz isn’t joking with its battery-electric endeavors. The company is rolling out a full line of battery-electric products that are analog to its internal-combustion portfolio. The ’23 Mercedes-Benz EQE and its AMG equivalent fill the battery-electric space for E-Class devotees to make the step toward electric motors and away from internal combustion. Launched last year, the EQE sedan borrows the same styling conventions as the more expensive EQS and follows the established trend of having a hopped-up AMG variant. Starting at the EQE 350+, you’ll get a rear-drive battery-electric E-Class. Moving up to the EQE 4Matic nets you two motors, and the EQE 500 nets you even more power from those motors. Topping the range is the AMG EQE, which throws 617 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque to the wheels and launches you to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds.

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe follows the formula the company has laid out with these luxe-performance crossovers that eschew utility for style. Mercedes has updated the GLE 53 for ’24 and brought some fresh sheet metal to the 53 models, with a new front fascia and side intakes. The ’24 GLE 53 also gets new tail lights, the selectable AMG exhaust, and the most recent AMG steering wheel. Mercedes-AMG also squeezes more torque out of the 3.0-liter turbocharged I6 hybrid powertrain, and now shoves 429 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque through the nine-speed automatic transmission. While the horsepower figure is the same as the current GLE 53 model, that torque figure adds another 29 lb-ft to the sheet.

While Toyota jumped to the front of the pack with its hybrid Prius when the company launched it in Japan in 1997, the company hasn’t been as quick with battery-electric vehicles. Well, that tide is slowly shifting with the wildly named bZ4X. Toyota’s battery-electric crossover is giving ‘Yota fans a battery-electric option in the dealership, and giving the company valuable lessons in churning out EVs. This battery-electric crossover is powered by either a 201 hp motor in the front for front-wheel-drive models or that same 201 hp motor in the front and an 80 hp motor in the rear to give the bZ4X an all-wheel-drive variant. Feeding this powertrain is either a 71.4 kWh battery for front-wheel-drive models or a slightly larger 72.8 kWh battery for all-wheel-drive bZ4X models.

It’s hard to believe that Subaru’s Crosstrek is entering its third generation when its first generation kicking off as a 2013 model year. If you can do the math, that shows that this compact crossover has had a lot of growth in a few short years, but hasn’t followed the traditional expansion you’d find with small-but-growing cars. No, Subaru has kept the footprint fairly consistent over three generations, with this most recent example spanning only an extra inch in length. The third-generation Crosstrek also sticks with standard all-wheel drive and a pair of boxers under the hood: 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter flat fours are available, and make 152 and 182 hp respectively. Though, some things did not make the transition into the crossover's third generation. Lost are the manual transmissions and, currently, hybrid powertrains. Though, you can almost expect a hybrid Crosstrek down the line.

Mercedes-Benz is all-in on its BEV efforts and is almost constantly expanding its battery-powered portfolio. While most pay attention to the higher-end EQ models like the EQS or are waiting to see what the EQG will look like in production trim, the entry point to the battery-electric ‘Benz lineup is its EQB. The ’23 Mercedes-Benz EQB is split into three models, with the most affordable 250 variant giving you a single motor and 245 miles of range from its 70.5-kWh battery pack. This single-motor variant sends 188 hp and 284 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels. Jumping to the EQB 300 and EQB 350 nets you more power and all-wheel drive from the dual-motor drivetrain. Of course, those models also will set you back more money.
