¿Quién Tú Eres?

¿Quién Tú Eres?

By Plurawl

Our mission is to redefine the word "professionalism" by empowering Latino/ Latina/ Latinx communities to be their authentic selves. When we are told to be professional, in many ways we are told to not be ourselves. On this podcast, we have candid conversations and explore the conflict that we often face between being our authentic selves & "professionalism". The podcast is named ¿Quién Tú Eres? because that’s the question that we want each guest to answer. Listen to find out who we really are...when we stop code-switching.

Psychedelics & Authenticity with Victor Alfonso Cabral

Psychedelics & Authenticity with Victor Alfonso Cabral

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Victor Alfonso.

Victor Alfonso Cabral, LSW (He/Him) is a collaborative and strategic Afro-Latinx leader who is committed to making an impact in his community and beyond. Victor serves as the Director of Policy and Regulatory Affairs for Fluence Training. Victor works to center BIPOC voices in the field of psychedelics by highlighting BIPOC stories in policy & advocacy efforts, art, and science.

He is currently working on a documentary film titled We Are The Medicine which explores the re-emergence of psychedelics from the perspective of Black, Indigenous, and people of color. Victor is listed on Students for Sensible Drug Policy’s list of “40 Under 40 Outstanding BIPOC Leaders in Drug Policy in the United States” for his work in psychedelic policy and received the 2022 Emerging Social Work Leader Award from the National Association of Social Workers.

Because of Victor’s ADHD, he struggled to pay attention in class and absorb the knowledge he was reading. As he got older, he learned the tips and tricks that he needed to work the educational system and continue his education on his terms. This week on the podcast, Victor tells us how working with his diagnosis, rather than against it, encouraged him to pursue a future he’d only dreamed of.

Invest in Yourself with Jonathan Mentor

Invest in Yourself with Jonathan Mentor

“You’re never gonna get a job if you're an entrepreneur.”

That’s what this week’s guest said on the podcast and I have to admit, I was shocked. That’s a very bold statement. But I was even more shocked when I realized that he was right.

We’ve seen it too many times. We are told to quiet our voices and make ourselves smaller. Even if we know what we’re talking about and we are the best person on the team, some people will do anything they can to keep us in “our place.”

So what happens when you become bigger than your job?

That’s the question that we tackle on this week's episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast. And this week’s guest is none other than the incredible Jonathan J. Mentor.

Jonathan J. Mentor is a revenue growth expert that provokes the economic growth and visibility of disadvantaged humans in B2B tech.  He is proud to be a Latinx, Black, Queer father. He is the Founder & CEO of Successment, a revenue growth partner for diverse tech startups where he developed BOOM®,  a 4-step growth process that uncomplicates RevOps Science®. His inspiration for Successment is his commitment to the success of disadvantaged humans. Success + Commitment = Successment.

When he went from being a cashier to a corporate broker, the culture shock was overwhelming. However, Jonathan was able to listen and learn from his peers. His ability to adapt and excel at his work made him way bigger than career as a broker. He very quickly became LinkedIn famous and started moonlighting on his own.

And even though Jonathan was earning the company millions of dollars in revenue, his co-workers felt threatened by his success outside of his corporate job. In the end, they offered him a severance package and told him it was his last day. From there he decided to invest in himself and start his own business. This was the birth of Successment.

This week we talk about

  • How Jonathan was able to excel at his career without a degree

  • How he was able to battle imposter syndrome during his time as a broker

  • Why Jonathan works with the clients that he does

  • Why he now refuses to code switch or hide his tattoos during meetings

Self Confidence with Vanessa Correa

Self Confidence with Vanessa Correa

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Vanessa Correa.

Vanessa Correa recently took the role of Vice President and DEI Marketing Strategy Lead at JPMorgan Chase & Co. after five years at Freddie Mac, where she was the marketing lead for equitable housing initiatives handling content strategy, brand development, paid media, and marketing events. Vanessa hails from The Bronx, was born to two Puerto Ricans, and is a quintessential 80s baby.

This week on the podcast, Vanessa shares how her upbringing shaped her self-confidence as an adult. Her childhood prepared her to stand her ground and enforce her boundaries the first time they’re breached. Which happened a lot, considering how often people in majority white spaces felt entitled to her intelligence.

Listen to Vanessa’s episode to hear how she let her haters know that her middle fingers still work.

Agua Bonita with Kayla Castañeda

Agua Bonita with Kayla Castañeda

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Kayla Castañeda, who is the founder of Agua Bonita. Here's a quick bio...in Kayla's own words...

Much like the aguas frescas we make, my family history starts in Mexico and settles in the fruit fields of the Central Valley of California. My ancestors immigrated to the states pursuing the opportunity for a better life and following the migrant farm work as field workers, which led us here – where we grow 60% of the nation’s produce!

Growing up here, my grandpa would bring us home super ripe fruit from the fields that he couldn’t just stand to let go to waste. This fruit would be sprinkled with chile powder or made into aguas frescas for the whole family to enjoy.

When I lost my job mid-pandemic, I took it as “when life gives you lemons, make aguas frescas.” I decided to create something that is reflective of my culture, my family, and my grandpa’s teachings of never letting food go to waste (and not too much sugar – he was diabetic), and Agua Bonita was born. We’ve carried on the tradition of taking real fruit from the fields and creating a delicious drink to share with everyone, from our home to your hands.

$ isn’t a requirement to be your most authentic self at work. It sure does give you a boost of confidence knowing that when your savings account is stacked. If you’re disrespected at work, you can quit and let that savings account and investments hold you down for a while.

Palo Santo with Antonio Morales

Palo Santo with Antonio Morales

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves.

Antonio Morales is a licensed clinical social worker and the founder of The Liberated Self Therapeutic Services, LLC, a private practice dedicated to serving the mental health needs of Black and Brown folk, across communities. Our mission is “to disrupt and dismantle the psychological chaos and confusion of white supremacy, as we facilitate a transformative healing process that will allow Black and Brown folk to transcend the adverse impact of our current and historical, intergenerational, complex racial trauma.”

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Antonio identifies as a mixed race Afro Boricua and honors his indigenous African and Taino ancestors through his work, while grappling with the dilemma of knowing that European blood runs through his veins. As a product of the European colonization of the Western Hemisphere, Antonio understands the importance of addressing the historical, intergenerational, complex racial trauma that exists within him, as well as the communities he serves.

Antonio believes that healing from and transcending the adverse impact of white supremacy is, by default, revolutionary. The process of Black and Brown folk becoming self-actualized, whole and complete human beings, while giving ourselves permission to express our divine greatness, in the face of white supremacy, is the ultimate act of rebellion and a radicalized expression of liberation.

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves.

Illianna Acosta is no stranger to community-building and her leadership with ERG’s, with a focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, goes hand in hand to help people and organizations amplify their connection to community, leadership and belonging. With an infectious positive perspective, confidence, compassion and layered high energy, Illianna draws inspiration from humble beginnings that taught her a great deal about choosing a future outside of what she saw in front of her.

With 20 years of experience in AdTech, partnerships, and sales, Illianna is a Senior Manager at LinkedIn, managing Global AdTech Partnerships. Her work focuses on accelerating innovation, revenue, and customer growth.

As a speaker and subject matter expert in the art of showing up, she not only knows how to connect with a crowd, but she also elevates them to visualize their potential. With crowd pleasing topics such as “No longer a seat warmer” and “You’re an ERG Leader, Now What?”, she captivates audiences and takes them on a journey to owning their voice, embracing their superpower, and building a positive, inclusive motivated ERG team.

“I engage willingly in the work that it takes to create long term, sustainable change so that future generations of Latinos never have to feel or go through the same things I experienced in life and in my career. “

Though grateful to have the opportunity to work in corporate America, she faced challenges and at times felt alienated, tokenized, or excluded. It was imperative to find her way, voice, and the support that would lead her to feel empowered enough to show up as herself. Joining LinkedIn was the first corporate experience where Illianna saw others that looked like her and spoke her language. A master in the art of making something out of nothing, she saw opportunities to make a difference. “I saw that I could help create safe spaces - places where people felt a sense of community and belonging, and where someone could feel empowered to do good work and be a part of something bigger than we could imagine.”

Today, she is the Global Co-Chair of LinkedIn’s Hispanic ERG. Illianna is on the National Board of the 100 Hispanic Women Organization, the Co-President of the Cornell Johnson School NY Alumni Organization and author of Lost In Translation, a newsletter focused on highlighting challenges and limitations for historically excluded groups, with experiences that have shaped who they are on how they show up in their personal and professional lives. She’s also joined the Chief network, where is continuing to invest in her own development and working with fellow women executives who are paving the way for more diversity in leadership.

Conviction with Hector Carvajal

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves.

The first episode (from years ago) was so good, we had to run it back with Hector Carvajal, who's founder of Don Carvajal Café. He's actually the first guest that has been featured twice on this podcast.

Hector is an Afro-Latino entrepreneur on a mission to reimagine the specialty coffee market. He was born on a small farm in the Dominican Republic and returned there often while growing up in the Bronx, an experience that gave him a unique perspective on the coffee supply chain. After pursuing his education at CUNY-Guttman and the University of Rochester, Hector has returned to the Bronx to build a coffee business model that is both fair to producers and inclusive to consumers. In just two years, he’s taken the brand from operating out of a dorm room to a city-wide distribution network that roasts 500 pounds of beans each week.

Sex Work to Cornrows: It's Not Unprofessional

Sex Work to Cornrows: It's Not Unprofessional

On July 7, 2022 Arielle Egozi posted “sex work” as a work experience on her LinkedIn. It went viral on the platform and across world news, sparking global debate about what is considered “professional” for a professional platform.

On the heels of the Great Resignation, this session will explore and unpack what “professionalism” really means, why code-switching and assimilation is bad for mental health and for business, and how creating work environments that are inclusive and celebratory of all identities is not only the future, but is the right now.

From neurodivergence to the politics of hair and code-switching body language, this conversation will be real, unapologetic, and demand a new perspective from its audience (but, like, in a fun way).

Daniella earned a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Central Florida. Before the inception of Zulu Pods, Daniella worked at a leading American aerospace manufacturer.

Dove co-founded the CROWN Coalition to advance anti-hair discrimination legislation called The CROWN Act. The CROWN Act, which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, is a law that prohibits racial discrimination based on natural textures and protective hairstyles including braids, locs, twists, and bantu knots.

According to their research, Black women’s hair is 2.5x more likely to be perceived as unprofessional. Read that again.
Race-based hair bias and discrimination remains a systemic problem in the workplace, disproportionately impacting
Black women’s deserved employment opportunities and professional advancement – and it has to stop.

Play the Game with Lexie Perez

Lexie Perez - Global Planning Director

Here's a quick bio...in her own words.

As an Afro-Latinx Bronx-raised woman - I bring the intersections of gender, class, and race to my strategic and marketing practice. My specialties include: Advocate for unheard voices, speak truth to power, interrogate binary ideas and assumptions, identify humanity beyond data, translate insights into actions, look inward and outward for fresh perspectives. As a natural outsider, I bring the outside in. I help brands see the world through the eyes of real people and real-world culture - not only consumers, not only data points, not only users. I bring an entrepreneur mindset & spirit to every project.

Before diving into agency planning 12 + years ago, I was a TV producer in broadcasting, telecommunications marketer, entrepreneur, and hip hop music writer.  These experiences shaped my passion for human behavior, storytelling, technology, and culture. They also helped me translate my non-strategy skills into strategy skills.  Today my credentials span across CPG, B2B, consumer tech, retail, and entertainment, fintech - at both global and regional levels.

I started out my career as a content creator, specialized into social /digital, and now live in the worlds of brand strategy and research. Draw Hope with Cloud Kent

Draw Hope with Cloud Kent

This week's episode features Kenneth Jeremiah Gomez aka Cloud Kent, who is a Contemporary POP artist who grew up in the streets of New York City. His rough beginnings as a kid enabled him to survive the concrete jungle.

His creative spark came in the form of art that his father would send from jail. Through an innocent mind, he channeled his empathy for his father as fuel to power and grow his love for art.

Although art was always a part of his life, he was put down and bullied for his passions growing up. In 2015, at the age of 25, Kennth underwent life saving open heart surgery.

After this rebirth, his heart illustrations gained new meaning … vulnerability … the expression of a child-like self.  Calling on the imagery of a superhero's flight, Cloud Kent emerged as an alter ego to save him from himself - his fears, depression, and emotional incarceration.

These days, his work embodies the freedom and child-like innocence that connects the audience back to that pure part of themselves.

Why Are You Surprised with Judge Victoria Pratt

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves.

This week's guest is Judge Victoria Pratt.

Driven. Innovative. Inspiring. These are a few of the words used to describe Judge Victoria Pratt who has gained national and international acclaim for her commitment to reforming the criminal justice system. During her tenure as the Chief Judge in Newark Municipal Court in Newark, New Jersey, she spent years gaining a deep understanding of how justice could be delivered to court participants in a manner that increased their trust in the legal system and changed their behavior. While presiding over Newark Community Solutions, the Community Court Program, she used creative problem solving to provide alternatives to jail to low-level offenders. These alternatives included community service, individual and group counseling sessions, and her signature assignment of introspective essays. Called a pioneer in procedural justice, her respectful approach, and treating individuals with dignity has had a positive effect on court participants’ court experience, how the community viewed the court and how court players viewed their roles. Her TED Talk, How Judges Can Show Respect, has gone viral.  It has been translated into 11 languages, received over one million views and the Facebook clip has received an astounding 21 million views.

A fierce advocate committed to reform, Pratt has worked with jurisdictions across the nation, and as far as Ukraine, England, Trinidad and Tobago, and Mexico. In that role she facilitates workshops and presentations on alternative sentencing for juveniles and adults, as well as procedural justice.

As a nationally recognized expert in procedural justice and alternative sentencing, Judge Pratt has been asked by numerous professional organizations to share her story and philosophy. Pratt’s work has been featured in The Guardian newspaper, The Simple Idea that Could Transform U.S. Criminal Justice, and Rutgers Magazine, Asking for a Little Respect, both written by Pulitzer prize winning author Tina Rosenberg. She has also appeared on MSNBC’s the Melissa Harris Perry Show, the Emmy-award winning PBS show Due Process- Community Court: A Kinder, Gentler Way? and National Public Radio’s WBGO: Conversations with Allan Wolper.

Now, a Professor at Rutgers Law School in Newark, New Jersey, she teaches Problem Solving Justice and Restorative Justice. She also continues to champion criminal justice reform through her consulting firm Pratt Lucien Consultants, LLC, by sharing her skills and approach with others. As well as speaking to leaders of institutions and organizations about how to heighten and restore respect into their day-to-day operations so that their mission can be better achieved.

Pratt is licensed to practice law in both New Jersey and New York, and is admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court. She also facilitates Mountain Movers empowerment sessions to help individuals live their best lives.

Unfiltered Rates with Odalys Jasmine and Pabel Martinez

Unfiltered Rates with Odalys Jasmine and Pabel Martinez

During this episode, we are sharing the monthly live streamed conversation that we host on LinkedIn and YouTube

You'll be hearing our  observations and thoughts on all things Salary Transparency including the below

Let's keep it a buck, most companies are not in favor of Salary Transparency. If they were, then they wouldn't have waited for a Law to be passed. - That said...as of 11/1, the new Salary Transparency law is now active in NYC.

So far...I’m not seeing these ranges on the LinkedIn job posts…but I am seeing them on the company website though. Go on any company career page…search for a job that’s located in NYC…and you’ll see a range for the annual base salary.

During the episode, Odalys and Pabel will explore this and...
- What does all this mean for us?

- How to have productive & healthy Salary transparency conversations

- Personal experiences when these conversations have been awkward

- What do we want to see companies do next?

A Host on a Mission with Pabel Martinez

A Host on a Mission with Pabel Martinez

This week's episode is featuring an interview that our host Pabel Martinez had on the Sound Judgement podcast.

Sound Judgment has become a quest to identify the universal qualities and skills of "hostiness." If I’m on a quest, Pabel Martinez is on a mission—in his case, to redefine professionalism and to empower members of Latinx community to be their authentic selves 100% of the time. He’s sharing stories of Latinx professionals who are tired of playing the assimilation game in corporate America. Like him, they are rebelling against it, after lifetimes of pretending to be other than who they actually are. And we discover a new hostiness quality: That who we are as human beings has everything to do with how we show up on the mic, and whether—or not—we connect to our audiences.

Takeaways from Pabel Martinez, host of ¿Quién Tú Eres?
  1. Interrupting is often helpful and we need to learn how to do it deftly. Interrupting is cultural – it’s governed by what we consider polite, which is different everywhere. My husband, from Ohio where everyone is awfully nice, used to be horrified by what I see as my enthusiasm, which means I interrupt far more often than he does. I grew up in Boston and, later, New York.

The skill of interrupting may seem pretty small, inconsequential, even, but it’s not – it’s about being a host who can create a good flow to a conversation, and stay in control of it so you can serve your listeners.
  2. Is there an injustice you see, one that isn’t being addressed? You can use a podcast to fill that need, both by having the courage to share your own difficult story, and by encouraging guests to share their untold stories on your show. Representation matters. We know this, but Pabel is showing it. Listeners tell Pabel that because of ¿Quién Tú Eres?, they no longer feel alone. And that gives them strength to make changes they didn’t have the courage to do before.

That response says a lot about the connection a host on a mission can create with their audience. Could you help your audience know they’re not alone?
  3. While I believe there are universal qualities and skills to hostiness – I’m on that quest to uncover them – I also believe there is no single definition of a “great” or “best” host. Because, like my mother used to always say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That said, we can certainly know when a host is beloved. Not everyone will love you. But your ideal audience will, if: you understand who you’re talking to.

Are you serving that person? Do you know what they need to hear, and are you willing to go there? Pabel admitted that it’s hard for him to share episodes like the one he did about his salary, and the one he did about quitting his job at TikTok – but that they were among the most popular of all of his episodes. So get to know your ideal listeners very well. Care for them. Let your work speak to them. And, depending on your goals, speak out FOR them.
  4. Who we are as a human has everything to with who we are on the mic.
And what I realized is that who we are as human beings has everything to do with who we are on the mic.If we are courageous, it shows. If we know who our listeners are and love them, it shows. If we are ashamed of something in our lives and that holds us back from expressing our full selves as hosts, it shows. If we are making our podcast (or giving our speech or writing our story) solely to support our business and make money – purely for our own ends – it shows. It doesn’t matter if we’re actually sharing personal stories or not: listeners hear and respond to our character in our voices, regardless of the format. So Pabel’s question — Quién Tú Eres? — applies to all of us.

Before you turn on the mic, spend some time with his question.

    Who are you?

Ride Alongs With Giovanna “Gigi” Gonzalez

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves.   This week's guest, Giovanna “Gigi” Gonzalez, teaches financial literacy and career readiness to first-generation Latinas. Through educational workshops and her TikTok account (@thefirstgenmentor), she's built a community of over 195,000+. She holds a BA in Economics, a certificate in investment performance measurement, and 10 years of experience in financial services.

Here's a bit more about her...in her own words..."As a first-gen Latina myself, I’ve experienced the discomfort and overwhelm that comes from attempting to manage, invest, and grow my income as the first in the family to enter these spaces. I’ve experienced reaching the level of success my family dreamed of me and having the desire to give back and uplift the same people who sacrificed so much to help get me here. I remember how it felt to be lost and want guidance on how to support my loved ones and while planning my financial future and not find it. I set out to change that by paving the way for those who come behind me through guidance, mentorship, and financial education."

Most recently, at the CA Secretary of State he managed outreach campaigns engaging over ten million people in different target markets, including Latinx, Black, Asian and other underrepresented communities.

In his spare time he does stand-up comedy as an artistic outlet. Through his comedy, he shares his experience as an immigrant navigating US culture and laughs at the inequalities in society that are hidden in plain sight. As an actor he is currently signed to perform in the 2022-2023 season with the Sacramento Theater Company.
