190 A Simple Technique to Quickly De-Stress and Activate Your Parasympathetic Nervous System (Rest & Digest Mode)

Yoga practice doesn't end when you leave your yoga mat, in many ways, it's just beginning. 

How do you apply yoga when you need it the most, outside of your practice space? 

This breathing technique comes from the source texts of yoga over 2000 years ago as one of the simplest, yet most powerful ways to regulate your mind and body in the moment. 

This is called langhana breathing and it works by activating your parasympathetic nervous system - the rest, digest and relax mode of your central nervous system that is necessary to relieve physical stress and calm mental duress. 

I share a short practice that you can do (almost!) anywhere, anytime you need a quick reset, as well as options to practice longer if you find it helpful. 

As always, I encourage you to listen to your body and notice how it feels for you. If something works, keep it and use it when you need it. If it doesn't work or resonate, find what does. I have found this technique to be incredibly helpful and useful for myself and countless students. I hope you find it helpful too!

We'll do some work to release tension in the legs and hips and some work to strengthen your upper body. Time with Inversions, what i called a "mindful balancing sequence," wheel, crow, eka pada galvasana and other level 2 to level 3 poses. No props required but a block may be helpful.

157 Yogic Breathing - The Most Important Part Of Yoga Practice

Today I share a simple 20 minute meditation on the most important part of yoga practice: yogic breathing. This is great for beginners or anyone who wants to deepen the fundamentals of their practice. Yogic breathing may seem really simple - and it is - but It can have profound benefits. The average person breathes 12-20 breaths a minute. These are often shallow and emphasize the upper lungs. Breathing that way creates a Sympathetic Nervous System response - a stress response. Just by how you breathe! With yogic breathing we slow this down and breathe deeper into the lower belly using the diaphragm. As a former singer I learned this is where the power to sustain your breath comes from. This slower, deeper belly breathing also creates a Parasympathetic Nervous System response - a rest and relax response - which was very helpful to come back to throughout the week Ive had with power outages, water being shut off and food shortages here in Texas. As we move into the darkest week of the year here in the Northern hemisphere this is a great time to do this slower, gentle practice and give your body and mind time to rest and recharge. Of course, we always want to find balance of yin and yang / stirha and sukha (effort and ease) so come back to this class anytime you need a slower practice.
