Ep. 199 Alexa Givens
Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Alexa Givens wants to make music that lasts. Raised on jazz standards and vocal powerhouses like Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande, Givens strives to create "vibrant colors" with her music, exploring dissonant harmony, crunchy chords, and vocal stacking. "Music is a time capsule for different eras of life," Givens says. "I want to be able to teleport people." Growing up in the suburbs of Maryland, Givens got her start singing in church, eventually becoming a vocalist for the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Youth Orchestra. Her varied influences, combined with her natural instinct for harmony, create the timeless sound of her first single "Broken Record": A featherlight pop song with hints of R&B and a youthful glow. "I’m trying to chase that tingly feeling I get from hearing certain pieces of music," Givens explains. In 2022, Givens was a featured artist on a Grammy-nominated project and was accepted into Berklee College of Music on a full Presidential Scholarship. The 18-year-old singer-songwriter-instrumentalist makes music with unabashed joy, and breathes new life into the genres she grew up on.

Ep. 197 Bella Rios
At only 18 years old, Bella Rios already has a musical past life. After years of exclusively performing covers, she spent her high school years releasing rock-leaning originals, inspired by the classic records she was raised on. “My parents would wake me up by playing Led Zeppelin, Heart, Fleetwood Mac,” Rios says. “It brought my family together.” At the same time, she traveled and performed with professional children’s choirs; all while receiving classical training in both voice and piano. However, her diverse musical background led to a bit of an artistic identity crisis, which inspired her to attempt songwriting in every imaginable genre, determined to find her sound. Bella's upcoming singles are the successful products of that process: moody, powerhouse pop songs with an edge.

Ep. 194 Archpalatine
Archpalatine - One of the freshest new artistic voices standing out amongst the backdrop of the City of Brotherly Love’s many multi-faceted and musically talented artists. Archpalatine the singer, songwriter, pianist, performer, and charismatic band front-man Derek Anthony Wilson is poised to not only create a lane for himself and his bandmates (Anthony Pompey - vocals, Aaron Wolf - percussion, Ben High – bass, and John Palmer - Synths/Direction) but also blaze a trail for creative risk-takers, soulful storytellers, and theatrical musicians who challenge the old guard of musical gatekeepers. Wilson is a classically trained concert vocalist, National Marian Anderson Historical Society scholar artist, and internationally touring musician whose accolades both on and off-stage are only rivaled by his desire to use his musical platform and gifts to initiate and support social change, engaging spirit, and talent, and course ambitions within the musical landscape. With a penchant for beautifully and seamlessly blending genres, Archpalatine sires a sound that is just as difficult to pigeonhole into one category as it is to forget. Archpalatine breaks down the genre to create a new sound that may eloquently and appropriately be called “Histrionic Cosmic Soul”.  The feel-good music gifted to the audience at an Archpalatine show offers a long-time abandoned experience that can be enjoyed by every group of people from all walks of life, every taste in entertainment, all preferences and interests, and moves the soul, be it in the form of smiles on faces to dancing out of your seat. Archpalatine infuses his musical presentations with theatrics traditionally reserved for stage shows and are reminiscent of large-scale Broadway features — be they performed on a grand scale, in intimate rooms, or at the trendiest outlets.  Performances by this musical powerhouse develop a rapport with the audience, encourage audience participation through call & response, and incorporate danceable rhythms. Ep. 192 Rubber
Rubber creates an intricately balanced soundscape combining their R&B, Funk, Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Soul influences like Frank Ocean, Thundercat, Patrice Rushen, and Amy Winehouse while maintaining that hot-pink, dynamic feeling of pop music, anthemic and universal. The group is a Philly-based, writing-producing duo made up of singer-lyricist, Andrew Loper, and producer/multi-instrumentalist, John Della Franco formed during their time studying at Temple University in 2018. They started out writing music for fun, but after performing for the first time together in a campus coffee shop, they were signed to the Temple University Record Label and released their first single to critical acclaim sending them up and down the East Coast. Ep. 174 Ruffin
Born and raised in West Philadelphia, Ruffin (Joseph Ruffin) had always been deeply drawn to creative expression and almost entirely self-taught. At a very young age, Ruffin had explored artistry in the sketchbook as well as the family computer, where he got to work experimenting with music production. As a teen, he attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts. This environment encouraged and nurtured the creative process. PAPRIKA: Released 6/1/21 Ruffin’s latest album, “Paprika” is a tonal and harmonic continuation of Ruffin’s prior album “Prisma”. It is recognizably Pop/R&B and unmistakably unique with its blend of jazzy vibes, funk elements, and an underlying City Pop tone. You can expect to hear keys and guitar solos, as well gentle vocals that will send chills down your spine. “Paprika” is an entirely self-produced, deeply personal project, with a self- illustrated album cover as the cherry on top. Ep. 173 Ben Dehan
Ben DeHan creates a unique sound somewhere between Machine Gun Kelly and Angels & Airwaves. His meticulously programmed beats, LoFi keyboards, and singalong choruses have drawn comparisons to artists like the 1975 & The Band Camino, while the use of acoustic guitars and a “wear your heart on your sleeve” vocal performance will feel right at home for fans of 90’s pop/rock and New Alt in the vane of Valley or THE WLDLFE. Melancholically optimistic lyrics and the haunting swells of a cello accompaniment make it easy to connect with a litany of catharsis, joy, & introspection. The distorted guitars of his pop-punk influences have been traded for atmospheric string arrangements and the intentional space left in production is filled with a vocal performance oozing with a pop sensibility. Whether it’s a trip to the beach or driving through the mountains, these are songs to roll the windows down, sing out loud, and make memories too. Something nostalgic but new, his music becomes a life soundtrack. As a member of the Baltimore-based pop-punk band American Diary, Ben cut his teeth playing the 2008 Warped Tour. Feeling despondent in a broken scene, line-up changes, and upside-down record deals, Ben took a hiatus from the music business before re-emerging as a solo artist. Equipped with a DIY work ethic and a decade more of life experiences, Ben came out the other side with a greater appreciation and love for the records he grew up with and the process it took to make them. What had started with an acoustic guitar and hundreds of voice memos became fleshed out arrangements with the help of girlfriend/collaborator/cellist Lauren White. Together they enlisted the help of producer Sam Pura (The Dangerous Summer, The Story So Far) to help find the sound that would bring their ideas to life. Littered with Catharsis, Joy, and Introspection, his songs connect on an emotional level. Something nostalgic but new, his music becomes a life soundtrack. Ep. 171 Victorian Death Photos
Houston, Texas outfit Victorian Death Photos consists of two anonymous artists, one man, one woman, both shrouded in mystery and known only to us as He and She. The duo has collaborated on many different creative projects in the past, with designs on creating a metal album. Fate had other plans, however, and once the pair started working together, they ended up zeroing in on a “haunted, synth, post-punk electronic” sound, culminating in the upcoming The Basement Tapes LP. “We went with it,” said She. While music is their primary focus at the moment, both members have an extensive wrap sheet of projects that have gained a bit of traction in the art and film community. This is a fascinating release from Victorian Death Photos that leaves us breathless for more in the coming months. - Alice Teeple ( Links:

Ep. 146 Dante Mazzetti
Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Named one of the Top 20 Prospects by Music Connection Magazine, Dante Mazzetti delivers a unique brand of alternative roots music.  Described as a “standout songwriter” (New Music Weekly), "multi-talented musician" (The Independent), and "the next big thing" (Keep Walking Music), Mazzetti is known for his gravelly vocals and fearless creativity.  As a multi-instrumentalist, Mazzetti plays most of the instruments on his albums.   Mazzetti plays several instruments simultaneously during his live performances while switching between guitar, mandolin, upright bass, banjo, and piano. Mazzetti has been featured on radio stations worldwide, including New York's Country 94.7 out of New York City, USA, Cambridge 105 out of Cambridge, the United Kingdom, and CILU 102.7 out of Ontario, Canada.  He has opened for several major artists, such as Ben Folds, Guster, and America, and was chosen to star in Levi's "What's True" national television commercial campaign. Growing up in New York City's vibrant cultural landscape has influenced Mazzetti's eclectic musical style.  Mazzetti notes, "New York City is a place where happiness, tragedy, anger, and love intersect on street corners daily.  It’s the ultimate experiment.  Thousands of people from all walks of life, all the cultures of the world.  Lyrical and musical inspiration is everywhere." Mazzetti began his music career with the release of his self-titled debut album. After exploring the genre of Americana, Mazzetti experimented with his sound by releasing his rock album, Lost and Drifting. This album showed off his ability to capture different genres through his songwriting. After the terror attacks of September 11th, music took a backseat when Mazzetti decided to serve the people of his city by joining the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).  After a deadly apartment fire, the FDNY awarded Mazzetti one of their highest medals of honor in recognition of his heroic actions on that day. In July 2019, Mazzetti made his official return to music by releasing a string of singles and EPs.  This culminated in the 2020 release of Hotel, his third full-length album.  The record brought together gritty acoustic folk and alternative blues, laced with lyrical storytelling.  Mazzetti says, “The music on this album is a mixture of accessibility and wild imagery. I’ve always enjoyed making music that goes off on a tangent but doesn’t fall off the cliff.  The songs are doors that open easily into bizarre worlds rather than places of comfort.”  With this release, the press predicted big things to come for Mazzetti, stating "Dante will be a legend" (Yellow & Black Music) and "Mazzetti has a big future...a multi-talented man with fire in his voice." (The Sound Sniffer) Mazzetti is still an active FDNY firefighter.  He also organizes fundraisers for First Responders Children’s Foundation which supports the children of firefighters, police officers, and EMTs who have died in the line of duty. Mazzetti has started releasing a string of singles through all the digital music platforms.  He is currently hosting free Live Stream concerts straight from his New York City balcony each Thursday at 7 pm EST on Facebook.

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
R&B singer/songwriter Bairi (a.k.a. “Bairi the Siren”) developed her voice and love for music within the confines of her small hometown Hershey, Pennsylvania, a.k.a. “The Sweetest Place on Earth”; ironically fitting, given the singer’s sweet, angelic tone. Bairi contradicts the softness of her voice with vivid, often explicit lyricism to tell stories of the typical 20-something journeying through love, lust, and life. Toward the end of 2016, Bairi (formerly known as Bri Marie) independently released her 6-song debut EP Beginnings, including the sex-playlist track Bedroom Eyes which surpassed over 176k plays within the first 2 weeks on YouTube with little promotion. Since then, Bairi has consistently left audiences with a strong impression, performing on notable stages alongside rising east coast talent, and opening for artists such as Isaiah Rashad, Nitty Scott MC, Jesse Boykins III, Ari Lennox, and more. Bairi has shown promise, versatility, and progression through every addition to her discography. From her debut in 2016 to releases such as ICNU, Permission, Medu$$$A, and now Brat, the siren has prepared to make the world fall in love with her journey– as well as its own– through her music.

Ep. 139 Sophie Coran
Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Sophie Coran’s sonic world is crafted with firm intentionality, effortless poignancy, and imagistic seduction. The genre she feels the most at home in, her signature Noir & B style, is a blend of R&B, jazz, and classical composition, tied together with a ribbon of hyper-sentimentality. Her forthcoming release, S P A C E, details the struggle of unrequited love and learning to balance the imperative nature of self-worth with desire. Inspired by high-profile artists like Fiona Apple, Nick Hakim, and Amy Winehouse, she pulls contemporary swells from pop music and overlays them with intimate string and piano arrangements. Pair that with her affinity for classic films, vintage landscapes, and the romanticism of Europe, and you have a uniquely visceral experience that only she can so masterfully deliver. She is joined by longtime producer and engineer Michael Cumming of Treacle Mine Recording in Philadelphia, PA, and is backed by her band, Logan Roth (keys), Arjun Dube (drums), and Mike Morrongiello (bass). Tipped as one of 10 Artists You Should Know from Philadelphia on NPR music, “Singer-songwriter Sophie Coran fancies her aesthetic Noir & B, which is a clever way of packaging an artist who boasts both a faux-fur coat vintage Hollywood look, and a smoky-voiced after-hours lounge sound. Below the surface, though, Coran’s songs are complex studies of human connection — between lovers, between parents and their children, between strangers.” INSTAGRAM: ~sophiecoran // YouTube: Sophie Coran // Website:

Ep. 137 Des Audain
Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Des Audain, an NJ native who grew up in NC, is a musical artist who discovered her love for the piano at the age of 9 when she heard Ludwig Van Beethoven’s “5th Symphony” played on her father’s stereo system. She was so adamant about learning how to play piano, that her mother bought her a piano and arranged piano lessons.  At the age of 11 yrs old, she was writing songs where a high school beauty pageant contestant sang her original song and won the talent portion of the competition. It was then when she realized that she had talent. Des list some of her musical influences: Carol King, Roberta Flack, Karen Carpenter, and Carly Simon. Her approach to song-writing and singing is reminiscent of the influences listed; no-frills, direct, pure, and inviting. Des Audain has opened up for artists such as the group, "Escape," the incomparable "Tina Marie" (R.I.P.); and has shared the stage with "Brian McKnight" to "Kut Klose" at various outdoor concerts in Raleigh, NC in the '90s. It was upon a chance meeting and receiving praise from 90’s heartthrob, Malik Yoba, (from “New York Undercover”), that Des relocated back to New Jersey to pursue her singing career. She signed with the indie label “Urb N’ Flo” (now defunct), where she penned 3 original songs from her 1998 compilation cd titled, “Eric Meets Destini” and released a Christmas cd titled, “Destini & Friends.” But her music career was abruptly halted when her then 4 1/2 yr old daughter was abducted in 2005. Embroiled in court battles that spanned over a decade, she all but gave up on having a music career. It wasn’t until after the loss of her best friend in 2015, her Nana, Adoris Pierce, that she believed "God" literally moved her to deal with her pain thru song. She affirms, that losing her Grandmother was the catalyst to finding her way back to music again. Fast forward to 2019, Des Audain has started her own production company, DesGirl Productions, and is completing her debut EP, “The Archer”, with a tentative release scheduled in Fall of 2019. A new chapter has begun for this artist, and she believes it’s going to be her best one yet. Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Nicole June is an emerging artist from Philadelphia, PA. She dubs her musical style as “Adventure Pop", looking to disrupt her typical songwriting instincts by incorporating electronic production into her sound. June’s new single, “Glad I Tried”, combs through her background as a singer-songwriter while experimenting with the sounds of hip-hop and indie rock heard here in Philly. June self-produced “Glad I Tried” in the solitude of her home studio. The track embodies her explorative spirit and encourages us to let go of the things that haunt us. "I wrote this song to purge negative feelings I had about an old job so that I could get back to feeling centered," says June. The single is accompanied by an audacious music video in which Nicole can be seen creating and igniting a scarecrow. The video was produced and directed by Bad Monkey Productions and was filmed in June's childhood home. “I wanted to make the video to be as cathartic as creating the song was. I hope that translates to viewers. My friends in Bad Monkey Productions and I had a lot of fun working on it." Link Tree // Nicole June Website // Glad I Tried - Nicole June Video //

Ep. 131 Darius West
Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Darius West made his directorial debut this past fall in Nashville, TN with MIC DROP: The Culture of Christian Hip Hop, the first documentary of its kind. While the concept might be new to the mainstream, Christian Hip Hop (CHH) has been an underground presence since the 1980s. MIC DROP provides insight on CHH's origins and challenges the modern definition of Hip Hopentirely. "Hip Hop is the product of people using their voice to speak out and speak their truth," Director Darius West asserts, "Christian Hip Hop is the product of people wanting to preach their truth. It just goes to show that words can be heard, but never truly listened to." Hip Hop is not a genre; Hip Hop is history. Using spoken word to personify anger, oppression, perseverance, and real-life experience, Hip Hop transformed a source of expression into a culture all its own. Ignorance built a flawed perception around Hip Hop, barring its association to Christianity, and MIC DROP highlights the pioneers who broke that barrier down. Featuring Stephen Wiley, Fred Lynch, and more,  MIC DROP: The Culture of Christian Hip Hop reframes history to include the pioneers of a movement that no one genuinely understood, until now. West goes on to say, "You see rappers today 'converting' as if they're the ones who brought Hip Hop to the church, but after MIC DROP, you'll know who the true founding fathers are." Ep. 122 Coleman Rigg & the Ridge Runners
Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Started as a solo project in 2018, Coleman Rigg released his self-titled EP to launch himself into the Philly music scene. Shortly after release, Rigg began to form a band to take his songs to live audiences in Philly, thus bringing The Ridge Runners to life. Throughout 2019, the band took stages all across the city, honing in their live performances, and developing their own sound and identity. As the band continued playing shows, Rigg began working on new material with the band and blended it with each member's sounds. These efforts first came to fruition in late 2019 when the band recorded their first EP, Characters Living in Screens, at Miner Street Recordings in Philadelphia, working with local legend Brian McTear to produce the record. McTear and the band also worked with Matt Poirier as the engineer on the record. The EP was released at the height of the pandemic in 2020, but still was received favorably, despite the band not being able to support it with shows. Lead singles Too Close and Followers showed promise for the group, creating a powerful guitar rock sound with melodic hooks – a sound that was unique to the Philly music scene. Through the rest of 2020, the group worked together virtually on new songs, enough to round out a full-length record. If You Really Wanna Know, the album's lead single will be released on March 26, 2021. The full-length album is due out later in the spring of 2021.

Ep. 121 FL!P
Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Fl!p (real name Filip Todorovski) is a Philadelphia-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Dubbed as “Mayer mixed with 80s pop” and "if Prince and Vulfpeck had a Macedonian baby" by Philly scene connoisseurs, his versatile music explores styles and genres ranging from pop, rock, jazz, funk, R'n'B, dance, all the way to a couple of lo-fi projects -- all created with the sole purpose of sharing good vibes and good times through the power of music. Fl!p began his musical journey at a very young age, taking music theory and classical piano lessons since he was 7. Since then, he lives and breathes music. He wrote his first song when he was 9 and continued to get a high school music education as a music theorist and classically trained pianist. During those years in his little hometown in N. Macedonia, he discovered his love for creating and playing modern music, looking to artists like John Mayer and Sting for storytelling and inspiration. He taught himself the guitar, bass, and music production and picked up a job as a music producer and songwriter for a local hip hop label, under which he released his first album H.O.P.E. (Hopefully Open People's Eyes) in 2011. In 2013, his name made the history books as the youngest songwriter to have a composition chosen to be performed at the most prestigious national music festival in N. Macedonia: Skopje Fest. He continued to release several singles and videos both in Macedonian and English and collaborated with local bands and artists as a songwriter, vocalist/instrumentalist, and producer. After his move to the US in 2017, his childhood dreams started to become reality, as he discovered the music scene in Philly through open mics and gigs in every possible local bar where he met like-minded musicians to jam and collaborate with. Shortly after, he formed the band Fl!p with three of his coworkers from a local music store and began seriously writing and recording music. They released their first single "All Wrong" in 2019 and the self-titled EP in early 2020. As with many other things, 2020 got in the way of the band's survival, and Fl!p is flying solo again, more motivated than ever to explore new genres and venues to take his music. His latest single, “You’re one of a kind” took the simple approach of appreciating the blessing that is meeting a person that is a kindred spirit. The simple melodies, catchy lyrics, and positive energy are more than enough to grab your attention and not let go. With the decline of live performances, he has taken his philosophy of spreading good vibes online, where an ever-growing number of Twitch viewers and like-minded streamers devoutly watch his weekly musical streams. It is the support of his lovely Twitch community that has kept him going to create and release music through this whirlwind of a year and he is determined to never stop doing so for as long as it brings a smile to someone's face. I just try to write honest music that comes from my experiences being Catholic and feminist, being a passionate and curious person, and ultimately from being more interested in finding common ground with others than drawing the distinction, while respecting our individuality and diversity."  YouTube

Ep. 108 Mia Mormino
Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Mia Mormino is more than just a Pop Star in the making. Look a little closer past the Los Angeles native’s massive pop anthems, 450k+Spotify streams, and 5M+ Youtube views, and you’ll find what every artist hopes for but few ever achieve: authenticity. What cuts through most in Mia Mormino’s impossibly catchy and heartfelt music is a singular message of self-empowerment. It’s an easy theme for lesser artists to pantomime unconvincingly, but for this singer/songwriter/dancer, her difficult journey to get to that place of self-love is exactly what makes her message so genuine, and her music so compelling. Mia’s vulnerability and unwillingness to shy away from controversial topics is undeniably one of the qualities that makes her such an important and relatable artist to her fans. Beyond the bravery that underpins her confessional songwriting style, it is also Mia’s unabashed exploration of an ever-widening array of genres and musical influences that further positions her as an artist whose name you ought to know. Mia’s versatility is given ample opportunity to flourish thanks to her prolificity as a songwriter. In 2020, a year that brought the world to a screeching halt, Mia’s songwriting was an unstoppable force. She released six singles last year and is already gearing up to release seven more in 2021. The collection, entitled “The Seven Deadly Singles”, marks an ambitious project for Mia, as she captures the essence of each deadly sin across seven genre-spanning songs. Be sure to keep your ear out for Mia Mormino as she truly is changing the world with her art. Mia Mormino Youtube Channel Mia Mormino Website Mia Mormino Spotify

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
“We want our sound to be love. Our sound is a love sound. We want that love, the vibration of love to sound through the airwaves into the listener’s ears and hopefully reverberate and wake up their love vibration, too.” — Rahimah Wright, Red Flower Lake This straightforward and monumental intention is the mission for Red Flower Lake, a musical partnership between Abel and Rahimah Wright, who happen to be husband and wife. Since they were teenagers they have been making music together, but after more than two decades of collaboration, Red Flower Lake marks a newfound clarity and confidence, a coming into being. Red Flower Lake is lush, heady electro-pop. Aloe vera for our dried-out hearts. Sweeping melodies and understated yet complex soundscapes. These songs are open doors to a relationship: two people who know each other about as well as two humans can, singing to the other, about each other, offering a brave and heartfelt depiction of the territories they have survived and navigated together. It’s all here: intimacy and distance, heartbreak and ecstasy. Vulnerability, insecurity, and courage. Not only is this music about love and partnership; it is the sound of love and partnership, in all its highs and lows. It is a love sound.
