RACE22.com Weekend Wrap-Up for August 23-24, 2019

RACE22.com Weekend Wrap-Up for August 23-24, 2019

Things heated up this past weekend in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Championship battle and the CARS Tour championship battle got flipped upside down on lap three of the Mid-Atlantic Classic at Orange County Speedway.

As we continue to watch the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship battle it was a big weekend for Mike Looney, who over the last couple of weekends had struggled in appearances at Kingsport Speedway and Southern National Motorsports Park, but returning home to Motor Mile Speedway he gained a lot of valuable points on points leader Peyton Sellers. Looney won both races over fellow National title contender Philip Morris.

Sellers for his part finished second in a green, white, checkered finish at South Boston Speedway behind Lee Pulliam, who has won the last five races in a row there. Sellers gained a couple points on the night as did Morris but here in this region Looney was the big gainer gaining nearly 20 points on the night and closing the gap.

In the CARS Tour action, Bobby McCarty survived a lap three crash that involved around half the field at Orange County Speedway when championship points leader Josh Berry had his flywheel break and cut his oil filter as cars behind him crashed. This changes the dynamics of the championship battle with just one race left.

We'll also recap racing around the region in this week's Weekend WrapUp with Doc Love.

After another big weekend around the region, the Weekend Wrap-Up takes you around the Late Model Stock Car region. With four big races at Southern National Motorsports Park this weekend and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National title contenders converging on the tricky 4/10 mile track it was feast or famine. Ryan Repko feasted on two wins while Brian Vause picked up a win in his second start on the track and Bradley McCaskill was a model of consistency but it took to the last race of the weekend to find victory lane.

Over at Bowman Gray Stadium, Burt Myers was crowned the champion for the 10th time in the Modifieds while Tommy Neal won the Sportsman finale. Plus Ace Speedway held the Rodney Cook Classic Prelude race and paid out $5,000 to Ryan Millington after the young driver preserved his tires early and swapped the lead late with Justin Carroll before pulling away to victory. Plus much more around the region in this weeks Weekend Wrap-Up.

Back on the Air (Sort of) - Episode 18 of RACE22 Radio

After a handful of technical difficulties on Monday and Tuesday, we didn’t have a live RACE22 Radio show but we were able to get something recorded for you guys. Langley Austin and Corey Latham jumped on the phone and talked about the weekend of racing including a wild finish to the CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car race, some smack talk from the CARS Tour Super Late Model race and some viral content from Bowman Gray Stadium.

They also recapped the racing from around the region and looked ahead to the Memorial Day weekend up ahead. We also still plan to connect with the scheduled guests from Monday night and create a podcast with them in the coming days.
