April 23. Is the USA a Failed State? Plus, I Get Mad.
Today I get a little cranky again on the podcast. It makes me nervous. I make an inappropriate joke and take it back. I talk about the literal sh*t in my yard. I say What the FORK?! a couple of times. Oh well. I read an article that made me angry. It made me think people expected the USA to save them, to be perfect, to be paradise, and that they are surprised to discover it won't, isn't and never will be (and never was). Jessica Gardner. Training Local Women in Business During a Pandemic
Jessica is amazing. What a joy to have her on the podcast, from across my neighborhood right here in Djibouti. She offers practical tips for raising littles during this lockdown. She talks about her worries for family in the USA and what it feels like to be stuck here. And, we have a really honest conversation about how to keep our work here going. She made me cry. Again. After our conversation, Jessica's father passed away and she is unable to leave Djibouti. She wrote about the grief and trauma on her Instagram. Abigail Munday. Prayer Walking in Japan and from Isolation
Today I share an interview with Abigail Munday. We talk about going through an earthquake at this time, understanding Covid 19 from a cultural perspective, her heart for fighting human trafficking, and ancient bedrock wisdom. Abigail ends the episode with a beautiful prayer for healing and hope. After we spoke, Abigail shared an update with me: Rachel, as of today our city has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Japan per 100,000 people, with no lockdown. My husband Stephen wrote this for Facebook just now: Please pray for our city of Kanazawa. We now have the highest rate of infection of anywhere in Japan at 13.7 per 100,000 people. Our city is not taking this seriously, and could well be on the verge of an exponential explosion. The leadership here has been actively understating this threat and people are acting like it is not real. Please pray for our leaders, our friends and neighbors and our city. Please pray for us also. Please pray that God would hold back the tsunami. Please pray there is no other natural disaster at this time, which would result in people being displaced to crowded evacuation centers. April 11. Light in the Darkness, an Easter Homily by John O'Donohue
"No matter how assured or competent we may feel, there is none of us who has not large territories of fear in our hearts, fear of sharing ourselves, of opening ourselves, of entering life. That is why we come to an ancient holy place like this, before the dawn, to let the new tender light of the Resurrection touch our helpless fear and transfigure it and open it into courage." In this episode, I offer a reading by John O'Donohue. It is a homily that I cannot read without crying, though I do make it through this episode in one piece. *update: just after I recorded this, I got the Djibouti press update. There are now 187 cases and 2 deaths. Our biggest increase so far, sadly.
