1.10. Simplicity on the Sabbath

So many of our rhythms of life are overwhelming. Instead of being sweet and simple, they end up being stressful and jarring.
Christmas, for instance. There is so much potential for peace and calm, but instead we run around crazy, busying ourselves with many things that don’t matter all that much.
The same is true of holidays off and vacations. We could relax and spend time with our families, but we spend a lot of money and stress out with a lot of planning. Could we camp in the woods instead of going to Legoland again? Yes. Could we stay home and play board games instead of planning a trip or throwing a neighborhood bbq ? Yes.
This is true of the Sabbath too, friends.

1.09. Save Money on Sabbath

1.09. Save Money on Sabbath

I was surprised to find that finances are the leading cause of divorce litigation.
This is one thing I love about taking a Sabbath every week. It’s one day out of 7 that you’re taking the pressure off yourself to be a consumer.
It’s not that you can’t spend money on Sabbath, but rather you don’t have to.
This is the one day every week that you take the pressure off yourself to please the family with an outing. It’s the one day you don’t have to go grocery shopping or worry about how high the gas prices are. If you get gas on Sabbath, you’re probably spending extra money anyway.
Anything you do on Sabbath will be extra because it is an extra day--a holiday.
Listen for tips to save money by spending less on Sabbath.

1.07 Beginning the Sabbath

1.07 Beginning the Sabbath

Taking a day off each week and being intentional about rest and relationship on this day is great. It will help you be a better version of yourself. Have you heard of living your best life? Sabbath does that for you. But I also want Sabbath to benefit the rest of your family.
What would remind you to slow down when it’s time to slow down? If you made a giant cookie in a cast iron skillet? What about lighting candles around the house? Could you play calming music and do some stretching on the living room floor? Could you read together with blankets and hot cocoa?
Many cultural traditions throughout history observed rhythms and traditions like the Sabbath. They were a means of worship or relationship, sometimes a connection to the natural world, a coming of age practice, or a holiday or festival.

1.03 Rest in Relationship

If you have a particularly great relationship, you can use that to find peace on your Sabbath. The seeds planted in that relationship can become a beautiful garden to share in on a Sabbath rest day.

We’ll talk about those rough relationships another day. Today, moving closer to February and Valentine’s Day, we’re going to focus on the good relationships in your life.

1.01 Sabbath is for Everyone

1.01 Sabbath is for Everyone

Our way of life in modern America has become about one thing: production.
What can we produce, how much can we produce, and how efficiently can we produce it? The idea of taking time off seems insane when you consider the value we place on our time, but the world is catching on. Sabbath practice makes us more productive, more healthy, and more happy. It’s not just for the religious anymore. The Sabbath is for everyone.
