This month we speak to Dr Salman Qureshi who is a Consultant Head & Neck Radiologist at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City/Mayo Clinic in Abu Dhabi, having formerly held consultant posts in Qatar and Manchester. We discuss his enthusiasm for medical education and how this takes him all over the world delivering lectures on the global conference circuit. We also take a slight detour from our usual theme to discuss Salman's newfound passion for walking, which has sparked a lifestyle and body transformation that he hopes to share with the world through social media.

This month we chat to Dr Dan Fascia who is a Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist, Regional Clinical Director of the Yorkshire Imaging Collaborative and Chair of the RCR Informatics Committee. We discuss the ideal tech set-up for radiologists, the current state of AI adoption in the NHS and beyond with tools like Chat GPT. We also discuss his various entrepreneurial/educational ventures including Pacsbin and Radiology Masters.

This month we chat to Dr Rahil Kassamali, a British Interventional Radiologist who in 2020 quit the NHS and took up a post at Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar. IR is often neglected in discussions around Radiologists working abroad so he gives us a great insight into how made the switch and whether he would recommend it to others. His experience of working in a public healthcare system in Qatar also provides an interesting contrast to our episode 52 guest, Umi's, experience of working in private healthcare in Dubai.

In this episode we speak to Dr Michael Bernstein who is an Experimental Psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic imaging at Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown University, USA. Along with team at the Brown Radiology Human Factors Lab, he conducted a fascinating study that reveals how radiologists have a tendency to follow AI prompts, even when they are incorrect. We discuss the implications of this for patient care as clinical AI adoption increases, and what can be done to mitigate this phenomenon. This month we catch up to discuss how Uzi is dealing with the strikes in the UK, the joys of the consultant appraisal process and overcoming setbacks after the unforeseen technical issues that affected the RadCast Roentgen Prize last month.

In this episode we speak to Dr Benjamin Hunter, a Clinical Oncologist and PhD student at Imperial College London. He is part of a research team at the Marsden who recently made headline news for their work on using radiomics and AI to detect lung cancer. We discuss the research behind the headlines and the implications of research being picked up by the media, both positive and negative.

In this episode we speak to Dr Jim Zhong who is an Academic Interventional Radiology Trainee in Leeds, currently completing a Cancer Research UK funded PhD in Prostate Cancer reirradiation techniques. He gives us an overview about the rapidly evolving field of Interventional Oncology and its potential to revolutionize cancer therapy. We also discuss his life as an academic interventional radiology trainee and the importance of conducting more high level research in IO to generate evidence to justify its use in the face of competition from other more established cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Advice to new consultants - By Dr John Curtis

1. Under-promise, overdeliver

2. Seek a trustworthy, emotionally intelligent mentor

3. Don’t be afraid to declare your limitations - ask colleagues, radiographers and even trainees!

4. Don’t take on too much, too soon

5. Do what you like, like what you do

6. Develop strong relationships with your clinical colleagues. It is often these colleagues who know your true worth.

7. Teach the trainees – they will never forget the time and expertise you give them (this also applies to clinical colleagues). “Medical Education = saving lives in slow motion”

8. Never compromise on your standards and if asked for a “quick” opinion always provide that opinion as if you are issuing a formal report.

9. Have a list of colleagues (not necessarily within your own department) who will listen to you, keep matters confidential, offer sound advice in cases of conflict, doubts, confidence and for 2nd opinions. These colleagues can be specialty specific radiologists, any radiologist, clinicians or colleagues outside your Trust

In this episode explore 3D printing in radiology with one of the leading experts in the field, Dr Leonid Chepelev, Cardiothoracic Radiologist and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. In 2018 Dr Chepelev was lead author on the RSNA Special Interest Group paper outlining the clinical applications of medical 3D printing. We discuss the current and future use cases of the technology, how radiologists add value to the process and the challenges of setting up a 3D printing practice. 

In this episode we speak to Jade Scott-Blagrove, Founder of the Widening Participations Medics Network and Co-Founder RadReach, an RCR collaboration aimed at increasing access to radiology to individuals from under-represented groups. She tells us about her own life experiences that motivate her, gives her assessment on the current state of diversity in radiology and explains the tangible steps her and the RCR are taking to make radiology as inclusive as possible.

This month we have the 2nd instalment of our fellowship series as we speak to Dr Jehan Ghany, MSK consultant at Royal Liverpool Hospital, who spent a year as an MSK Fellow at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia from 2018-2019. We discuss what makes MSK the best specialty (apparently), the fellowship application process, the dreaded USMLE and her day to day experience working within an American Radiology department.

This month we're in celebration mode as we (Jamie and Uzoma - sorry Muhammad) have finally completed training. To mark the occasion we're releasing a rambles episode where we recap on the last 5 years as registrars, give our top tips for the trainees of the present and future️, discuss post CCT life and consider what the future has in store for RadCast.

In this episode we speak to Dr Sam Dumonteil and Dr Amy Davis, two of the co-founders of Hexarad, a teleradiology company set up by a group of radiologists who met as registrars on the St George's training scheme. They tell us about the proprietary tech systems that give them a competitive advantage and how they have become the most peer referred teleradiology company through really prioritising the health and well-being of their reporters, even sending everyone a monthly box of healthy snacks! As all of the Hexarad co-founders have "portfolio careers", we also discuss entrepreneurship in Radiology more generally.
