Rolling Into Wellness: Jill Miller's Path to Body Connection

Rolling Into Wellness: Jill Miller's Path to Body Connection

This week’s podcast episode I had the honor of interviewing Jill Miller. Jill is a pioneer in forging relevant links between the worlds of fitness, yoga, athletics, massage, and pain-management, having studied movement and the human body for more than 30 years.

In this episode, we dove into her personal journey of not feeling grounded in her own body, battling disordered eating, and struggling to connect with her core. A pivotal part of Jill’s recovery was a practice she had every morning doing self-abdominal massage by lying on towels which opened up a space for her to connect with her emotions and discern what her body truly required.

Jill is the creator of Yoga Tune Up®️ and The Roll Model®️ Method, one focused on movement biomechanics, and the other on self-massage & soft tissue recovery/precovery. Both formats support regenerative and performance-based functions to help your body erase pain, reduce stress and improve mobility no matter your stage of fitness or health.

During the podcast, Jill shares the surprising amount of feedback she received from The Roll Model, of how many folks experienced some sort of emotional release from rolling. Jill breaks down how and why this happens from a physiological level. We also unpacked the incredible journey of writing her latest book, "Body by Breath," which took a whopping eight years. Jill breaks down the three zones of breathing and more.

This episode is like a treasure trove of information – packed to the brim with insights and knowledge.

Embodied Living with Suzanne Picard: A Journey of Connection and Slowdown

Embodied Living with Suzanne Picard: A Journey of Connection and Slowdown

This week’s Radical Embodiment podcast brings you my teacher, mentor, colleague, office mate & friend, Suzanne Picard. One of the last things Suzanne shares is an offering for anyone who wants to make the daily choice to be more embodied, do anything that helps ‘your velocity to settle’; inviting your velocity to settle, slowing down, connecting within.

In the interview, Suzanne shares a bit on her life journey, sharing her experience as a mom of two and now as a postmenopausal woman. Embodiment is a practice, some folks find it easier to connect ‘skin in’ = interoception, closing your eyes and connecting within, what sensations are coming from my whole system? Some folks find it easier to connect ‘skin out’ = exteroception, eyes open and looking out. There is no wrong or right way.

Listen to the interview for plenty of golden nuggets.

Suzanne is a Certified Advanced Rolfer and Rolfing Movement Therapist, in practice since 1992. Over the past 30 years she has deepened her studies with several styles of movement modalities, cranial sacral therapies and osteopathic inspired trainings in the nuero, vascular and visceral systems. She is a practicing visual artist with an MFA in sculpture. Suzanne cultivates the technical and the art of her manual therapy.

Journey with a Somanaut: Theology, Rolfing, and Human Dissection a conversation with Gil Hedley

Journey with a Somanaut: Theology, Rolfing, and Human Dissection a conversation with Gil Hedley

I was moved multiple times during this interview. This week’s podcast episode brings you Gil Hedley. Gil has profound reverence and insight on the human body, anatomy, and embodiment. Over the past 27 years, he has spent hundreds of hours of Hands-On Human Dissection Workshops in the laboratory. He has a background with a Ph.D. in Theological Ethics, Rolfing, and psychodynamics and energy healing. Through his combined interests and training, he has developed an integral approach to the study of human anatomy.

It was a tremendous honor to get to interview Gil for the podcast. I have been following Gil’s work for years. As many of you know, earlier this year, I participated in a cadaver dissection lab. One of the primary motivating factors behind my decision to pursue that experience was from listening to a handful of interviews with Gil and being taken aback by his deep reverence and amazement for the human body as he speaks.

Gil is currently on his Nerve Tour, which I was fortunate to attend here in Boulder, Colorado just this past weekend. He is likely coming to a city near you. Check out the tour dates here, if you’re someone who is curious to better understand the nervous system, I highly encourage you to check it out.

At the very least, take a peek at Gil’s website and consider becoming an Explorer member. He has an abundance of dissection videos and more so that you can better understand your own anatomy.

Embodiment with a Professor, Dance Movement Therapist, & Dissector

This week’s Radical Embodiment episode is bringing you the intelligent, kind, brilliant Lauri Nemetz. Lauri is a professor, dance movement therapist, and Author of the book, The Myofascial System in Form and Movement.

Outline of our conversation:

Embodiment, dance movement therapy, and personal growth.

◦ Lauri shares her diverse wealth of knowledge on the human body, including her background as a dance movement therapist and adjunct professor at Pace University.

To Lauri, embodiment is being present in your own body system and how it's becoming increasingly difficult for her yoga students to be embodied due to distractions in their daily lives.

Body image and trauma recovery through movement.

◦ Lauri reflects on her personal experience with car accidents and how it affected her perspective on movement and expression.

Fascia health and its impact on emotional well-being.

◦ Lauri discusses the importance of self-care and making time for nature, citing its ability to soften and ground them in the present moment.

Anatomy, dissection, and movement with a focus on fascia.

◦ Lauri shares insights on dissection techniques and artistic choices in preserving body donors' dignity and how donor bodies inspire new sense of embodiment in yoga practitioners.

Anatomy, dissection, and personal growth.

◦ Lauri reflects on her own relationship with her body through dissection and teaching, noting a shift towards curiosity and appreciation for the stories behind the body

◦ She encourages her students to have a similar curiosity, recognizing that a person's story extends beyond medical facts and can be inferred from their body.

◦ Lauri emphasizes importance of honoring the body's resilience and growth towards wellness, rather than focusing on diagnoses and what's wrong.

Myofascial system and its impact on movement and health.

◦ Lauri emphasizes the beauty and resilience of the human body, and how attitude and perception play a significant role in maintaining balance and health.

◦ She discusses the importance of myofascial connections in the body, particularly in relation to muscle and fascia, and how they change with age and hormonal shifts.

Embodiment, anatomy, and art history.

◦ Lauri discusses her PhD research in contemporary human anatomy, focusing on the intersection of art history, dissection, and visual literacy.

◦  She is interested in exploring how perception and visual representation have evolved in medical education and anatomical drawings throughout history.

Lauri’s suggestions for someone who is wanting to live a more embodied life:

-  Start small with doable practices like morning trail runs or short meditation sessions to prioritize embodiment and self-care

- Set time aside for yourself, even if it's just a few minutes a day, to maintain a more embodied life

Resilience and Adaptation: Venus Lau's Path to Empowerment

Welcome to Episode 1 of Season 5 of Radical Embodiment the podcast.

In this episode, sit down with the incredible Venus Lau, a dynamic mover and an inspiring human being. We delve deep into the meaning of embodiment and Venus's journey through life, from her early days as a shy child to becoming a D1 college golf athlete. Her story is one of resilience and adaptation as she navigated the loss of both her parents to cancer while in college.

Venus shares her insights on embracing vulnerability, the importance of making mistakes, and the courage it takes to listen to your internal compass. We explore the idea that being okay doesn't mean avoiding pain or failure but accepting it as part of the human experience. Join us as we discuss the transformative power of embodiment and the beauty of acknowledging our complex emotions in the journey of self-discovery.

Here are some of the pain points we cover in the interview:

Embracing Uncomfortable Emotions: In order to feel higher-vibration emotions like joy and love, it's essential to be open to uncomfortable ones. Embracing the full spectrum of emotions, even the uncomfortable ones, can lead to a deeper and more authentic experience of life.

Avoiding Perfectionism: Struggling with perfectionist tendencies can be limiting. Learning to recognize when you're being too hard on yourself and embracing imperfections can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Celebrating Small Wins: Celebrating even the small victories and moments in life can add up to a sense of accomplishment and happiness. It's about appreciating the little things and finding joy in everyday tasks.

Creating Safety: Feeling safe is crucial for enjoyment and growth. Whether it's physical, emotional, or mental safety, creating an environment where you feel secure allows you to explore new things and experiences with more confidence.

Trying New Things: Venus shared on the importance of trying new activities and being a beginner. It's about being open to experiences you haven't tried before, even if they initially feel uncomfortable or challenging.

Mindset Shift: Shifting your perspective and attitude toward tasks you might consider mundane or challenging can turn them into enjoyable experiences. Finding the joy in everyday activities can lead to a more fulfilling life.

Venus has an upcoming Super Beginner Strength + Flow Intensive program that is a wonderful opportunity for people to start their fitness journey in a safe and supportive community. Learn more about the program here.

Embracing Fall: Grounded, Graceful Letting Go

Embracing Fall: Grounded, Graceful Letting Go

Tis the season of letting go, as the trees begin to lose their leaves, holding the question of, ‘what am I ready to let go of?’

Listen to the entire episode to receive a guided practice where I walk you through a Grounded Graceful Letting Go embodied practice.

Steps to the practice that I take listeners through:

  • Stand barefoot (outside on the earth if possible)

  • Imagine roots growing out from your feet

  • Begin to gently bounce, keep your knees soft, just let yourself gently jiggle

  • Slowly allow the bounce to expand into more movement, little by little beginning to shake your entire body

  • As you feel ready, let the bouncing come to a pause.

  • Sit on the ground in a comfortable position.

  • Take a few deep easy full slow belly breaths.

  • Bring your attention to the center point of your pelvis & the center of your heart, breathe from here.

  • Staying connected with yourself ask the question, ‘What am I ready to let go of?’

  • Remain curious and open as you invite the answer to come to you.

  • Journal and reflect on your answer/s.

Hope, Faith, & Trust

Hope, Faith, & Trust

In this episode I share a perspective on hope, faith, & trust that was recently shared with me from my therapist, Jeffrey Howard. https://www.threeleavescounseling.com/

I relate the three to how you relate to your line (if you haven't yet, go listen to the episode titled, The Line). The way I am talking about hope, faith, & trust is by no means 'the way'. It is simply a perspective that has been interesting and curious for me to explore personally, and so I thought sharing with my listeners could also be of value.

Faith : leaning back, different than surrender, giving up, saying ok do it & leaning back out of self/ off of Line

Trust : integrated in your Line, in your power, in your sovereignty (more on that in next episode dropping tomorrow)

Hope: leaning forward from your Line, up & out of yourself, grappling

What do you desire to experience?

What do you desire to experience?

In today's episode, I share on the power of intention. You cannot know what you want, what you truly intend to experience until you first know how you feel. I share a deep practice on how to connect with how you really feel underneath the surface. From there, I give guidance on how to map what you desire to experience in all areas of your life: physical, emotional, mental, spiritually, & in relationships. Then I give a tangible practice that you can easily integrate into your daily life that will create a dramatic difference in how you experience yourself, your life, & others.

My Week in a Fresh Cadaver Dissection Lab

My Week in a Fresh Cadaver Dissection Lab

In this episode I share about my experience in a fresh cadaver dissection lab. It was a unique opportunity and incredible experience, so I wanted to share some of the highlights from the week with you.

Before the first day, I was almost certain I’d pass out or get queasy. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to participate but have been intrigued by this type of learning experience for years to actually get to see and feel the layers of the body.

I ended day 1 feeling exhilarated and like I had a phenomenal experience. Beginning to feel a significant internal shift in regards to how I relate to the body on all levels, physically, energetically, emotionally, mentally, & spiritually.

Day 2: I was astounded at how beautiful the fascia is with this blue reflective property almost similar to mother of pearl. My relationship to the superficial fascia and adipose tissue (fat) changed, seeing the deep importance of those layers and how, once the main adipose tissue is removed, the form no longer looks like the person they were. Recognizing that my own adipose and superficial fascia is what gives me my shape, robustness, and protection.

Day 3: Rolling on the floor is awesome. It’s regulating, nourishing, and seems to help reestablish internal equilibrium.

Day 4: What a day. We saw so much. Seeing directly the relationship and interplay between the psoas, diaphragm, heart, and lungs.

Day 5: Visualizing to a level I couldn’t have even imagined, the tissue underneath me, going into a profound body state meditation, with for the first time some better semblance of my own inner layers of my body. Feeling my protective superficial fascia and adipose shell that gives my body its shape and robustness. Imagining what my muscles encased in fascia might look like, feeling around my head and skull and visualizing how that superficial layer might be after just seeing it gently removed from a human body. Doing some self palpation massage where I felt and visualized my own heart, lung, diaphragm, psoas into my leg connection.

It really was astonishing. Phenomenal and exhilarating.

Takeaways : there were a lot but here are a few that stick out:

- It’s not ‘variation from the norm’, instead, ‘variation is the norm’

- the importance of tissue hydration, move your body in all ways all day and give your body/ receive lots of loving intentional touch

- The more you learn, the more you realize just how much you don’t know, it’s a beautiful thing

- How truly beautiful and remarkable the muscle fascia layer of the body is and the blue iridescent quality of the fascia

The donors (the bodies we worked on) were held with deep reverence and respect, making sure every part of them stayed together so that the entire body could be returned to the family.

This week, if you notice unkind, judgmental thoughts towards yourself or your body for being weird, not the 'correct'/'ideal' shape, etc, take a breath, and remind yourself there is no 'normal', your own unique variations are what make you YOU, variations are the NORM, and your adipose tissue (your fat) is what protects some of your most vulnerable parts of your body, it is what make YOU look like you, holding everything together, instead of trying to constantly get rid of it / see it as bad / shameful, please keep in mind also, it's importance. Notice if that invites you to come into a state of more love, gentleness, and acceptance.

Thank you for joining me on the Radical Embodiment podcast.

Building Emotional Resilience through Fascia Health

Building Emotional Resilience through Fascia Health

Welcome to Season 4 of the Radical Embodiment podcast! In the first episode, titled "Building Emotional Resilience through Fascia Health," I dive into the fascinating world of fascia and its potential role in our emotional well-being. This episode is perfect for women who desire to love their bodies more, feel confident in their physical selves, and seek a deeper sense of embodiment.

Fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds and interconnects every structure in our bodies, is a crucial network that provides structural integrity and facilitates communication. Recent research has also explored the possibility that fascia may play a role in storing and containing emotional stress.

To better comprehend the impact of emotions on fascia health, I explore the concept of emotional holding patterns. These patterns suggest that unresolved or unprocessed emotions can become stored in the body, leading to physical manifestations and tension. Suppressed emotions, due to societal conditioning, traumatic experiences, or a lack of emotional awareness, can create "holding" patterns in the fascia. This can result in chronic tension, stiffness, and restricted movement in specific areas.

To further understand the relationship between emotions and fascia, I delve into the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS, responsible for regulating our body's responses to stress and emotions, can activate the stress response, causing increased muscle tension. Prolonged exposure to stress can even lead to the development of adhesions or restrictions within the fascial network, resulting in pain, decreased flexibility, and compromised well-being.

In the episode, I also share practical techniques and exercises to help manage and release overwhelming emotions. Mind-body practices, such as mindfulness, breathwork, meditation, and movement therapies, have been found to positively influence both emotional well-being and fascia health. These practices promote relaxation, release emotional tension stored in the fascia, and support the overall health of this vital system.

I emphasize the importance of approaching the exploration of emotional holding patterns with gentleness, self-compassion, and, when necessary, seeking guidance from trained professionals such as therapists, bodyworkers, or somatic practitioners. Acknowledging and releasing stored emotions can promote greater emotional well-being, restore natural movement and flow within the body, and nurture a deeper sense of embodiment.

As I wrap up the episode, I summarize the key points discussed, highlighting the significant connection between emotional health and fascia. I encourage you, the listener, to incorporate the shared techniques and practices into your daily life, offering practical suggestions such as breathwork exercises, body scan meditations, movement practices, and journaling prompts for emotional exploration and release.

Remember, by nurturing emotional resilience through fascia health, you can cultivate a deep sense of embodiment and discover a greater love and appreciation for your body.

Loving Your Way Through

Loving Your Way Through

This is a very special episode as I get to share with you an incredibly loving woman who is the very reason I have the domain for Radical Embodiment, Coco Rosenblatt-Farrell. Coco and I met because she was the former domain owner of RadicalEmbodiment.com.

Coco defines embodiment as the combination of presence in your body, the awareness of your body, and the pleasure of aliveness. In the episode she shares on, unconditional love and radical embodiment, her journey of coming out of body negativity, the turning point in her health, the importance of not weighing yourself every morning, viewing your body as a Sacred garment, and loving your way through.

Coco is a former women’s empowerment coach and group facilitator who supported individual clients and led women’s circles and retreats for over 15 years with a focus on unconditional self-love and joyful embodiment.

Growing up Catholic in a small New England town with early and ongoing exposure to body negativity as well immersion in the diet culture, Coco worked for many years to unwind the familial, religious, and societal conditioning that had shaped her relationship with herself, her body, her sexuality, and food, ultimately leading her to discover a deep & abiding love for her body, or what she calls her “sacred garment.”

In the spring of 2019, Coco was diagnosed with invasive, multi centric breast cancer. With her body as her sanctuary, she knew that she could not adopt the familiar battle mentality of “kicking cancer’s ass” that would have her view part of her body as the enemy and bring the energy of fear and fight into her already taxed system. Instead, she decided to love her way through the experience, cultivating a soft, relaxed body, and an open, undefended heart that ultimately made her cancer journey one of the most profoundly beautiful and transformative adventures of her life.

Coco is currently at work on a book about her experience entitled “loving my way through,” and when she is not writing she nourishes her body and spirit by spending quality time with her beloved family & friends, playing in nature, cooking her favorite foods, and dancing sensually to a wide variety of music.

Progress over Perfection: A Shame-free Approach to Self-Improvement

Progress over Perfection: A Shame-free Approach to Self-Improvement

Often, when we're focused on personal growth and healing, we tend to be harsh and inflexible towards ourselves when striving to improve a particular aspect of our lives. In this week's episode, I share how to shift instead into a state of gentleness, curiosity, and compassion. I start the episode diving into the concept that healing is not linear, I then share from Chapter 11: Bumps Along the Way of my book, Radical Embodiment: A Practical Guide to Celebrating the Skin You're In. At the end of the episode, I share my own vulnerable 'bump along the way' that came about during the process of writing, editing, and birthing my book into the world.

I hope this episode shifts how you orient to your own growth and healing, supporting you to notice your own 'set backs' sooner, acknowledge them, and carve out some time to BE with what is emerging.

Why You Should Eat in the Bathtub

Why You Should Eat in the Bathtub

This topic may seem a bit silly but I am quite serious about it.

I am a fan of on occasion eating in the bathtub. I find it can be very supportive way to help your nervous system settle and enable more optimal digestion, particularly for days when you are tight on time but really desire a bath.

What is Embodiment?

What is Embodiment?

Welcome to Season 3 of the Radical Embodiment podcast!

In today's episode, I share what embodiment means. When I have a guest on the podcast, the first question I ask them is what embodiment means to them. I went through & listened to all of my interviews thus far and summarized the definitions shared to bring into one episode. I also share what embodiment means to me and what it means to be radically embodied.

Radical - a person who holds or follows strong convictions

Embodiment - having the ability to utilize your physical body to anchor into the present moment;  the integration of your physical and energetic bodies

What is radical embodiment to me?

  • Making the radical choice to no longer accept the societal conditioning of placing your the majority of your focus and power on the external world
  • Instead, you intentionally choose each & every day to BE in your body
  • This is radical because in our typical life, we aren’t ever invited into our body. Instead we are being sold to by marketing and advertising, we are getting lost in the social media scroll of comparison and lack.
  • Living a Radically Embodied life means CHOOSING YOU. Prioritizing some sort of daily consistent embodiment practice that helps you drop underneath the surface into what is truly present for, connecting to how you actually feel and what you truly need.
  • My mission with Radical Embodiment is to help shift the narrative that a woman’s worth is tied into her weight and physical appearance.

Somatic Simplicity & Reconfiguration

Somatic Simplicity & Reconfiguration

This episode was such a breeze & joy for me to get to do. I interviewed a dear teacher & friend of mine, Liz Janowski, Artist and Teacher.

In the episode, Liz shares her process that anyone can begin using to support them in being able to come more into their body. She emphasizes the importance of keeping it simple as you embark on your embodiment journey and to be clear for yourself that there is no timeline or end set goal. Liz invites in the opportunity of how movement and connecting with one’s body can help bring you back into more of a childlike state, connect into your potentiality body, and be in constant expansion of your self perception.

Liz Janowski teaches movement and makes art in Boulder, Colorado. She is a wife and mother.  In addition to teaching and taking photographs, she built and manages a successful surgery practice, alongside her husband. She has two masters degrees in communications and art from NYU and the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Embodiment in the Fitness World

Embodiment in the Fitness World

In episode 6 of Season 2 of the Radical Embodiment podcast, I interview Karen Mahar, PhD who is a co-founder and Chief Operating Officer at Animal Flow, the Quadrupedal Movement Training system developed by her business partner Mike Fitch.

Being that Karen is a female who has been in the fitness world for 12 years, I wanted to have her on the podcast as I knew she could shine some light about some of the outdated ways that are still lurking in the fitness world.

Dr. Mahar’s pathway her leadership role in the fitness role has included education and experience in a wide range of fields, each of which has contributed something valuable to being a part of the current adventure.

She has a Doctoral degree in Comparative Sociology, being a true data-geek who loves using research to build great programs. As a social scientist, she’s a big believer in developing evidence-based programs that respond to real-world needs, and in making sure the global Animal Flow program can be adapted to local levels.  She also has a Bachelors degree in film production, and it was this experience that allowed her to first begin making exercise video tutorials with Mike more than 12 years ago, a side project that soon grew into the formation of their company and the decision to make fitness her full-time career.

Dr. Mahar’s first job out of college was working for a nonprofit organization in Miami addressing income equality and homelessness. During 20 years with the organization, Karen rose to become its VP of Strategy and then CEO of its Institute of Homelessness Studies. While working for a fitness company and a homelessness organization might sound like disparate occupations, they are actually quite similar – Karen gets to use her passion and skills to create programs that make people’s lives better.

Dr. Mahar is passionate about fitness and the outdoors. An avid skier and hiker, you can find her all over the Colorado slopes in the winter. In the summer you'll find her hiking trails with her Bernese Mountain Dog, Pandora.    And, of course, she practices lots of Animal Flow!

Letting All Your Parts Live & Exist in the Body

Letting All Your Parts Live & Exist in the Body

In Episode 2 of Season 2 of Radical Embodiment the Podcast I interviewed Amy Lynn, a licensed psychotherapist in Colorado, and a true artist and psychic who supports you in healing trauma and aligning with more of your soul so that you can embody your wholeness.

In the episode, Amy shares what happens when we are in a trauma response. What happens with trauma is we can’t bring all of the parts of who we are into the body. There are ways we are suppressing, ignoring, or overemphasizing parts of ourselves because of dysregulation. Amy defines trauma as anytime our sense of security or status quo is abruptly shifted & we’re not able to immediately self regulate.

Amy is an expert trauma healing and offers a unique and powerful transformation model combining intuitive counseling and plant medicine integration. She has a rich vast of wisdom, knowledge, & insight.

Let Yourself Be Fully Seen

Let Yourself Be Fully Seen

Today's episode starts with a discussion on the all too common limiting belief that many women have of, 'I am too much.' Whether we believe our bodies are too much, our emotions are too much, or our needs are too much, or a combination of all of those.

Every single female client of mine has some sort of struggle around being ‘too much’. One may consider her needs to be too much in a relationship. Another feels the salary she wants to ask for at work is too much. Many of the women I work with have been conditioned since childhood to feel wrong for their body’s natural reaction to release tears after being hurt or feeling upset. We are conditioned to not ask for too much or be too emotional.

We feel we are not enough while simultaneously feeling like we are too much.

If you have the sense that you are too much, whether physically, emotionally, energetically, or spiritually, you will naturally and subconsciously start to limit your breath. You will breathe more shallowly, reducing your oxygen intake as you strive to take up less space.

Anytime you suppress your needs or wants because they feel too much, you are pushing away a part of yourself. Rejecting a significant piece of who you are is painful. To cover up this pain, to distract yourself from what you are really feeling, is where patterns of disordered eating, popping out of yourself, etc. begin to be created.

Make sure and stay tuned for the entirety of the episode. At the end of the episode, Emily shares a practice, Taking Up Your Space, where you get to have your own experiential of what it feels like to literally feel yourself, energetically, and how that can help to unwind the outdated, limiting story of 'I am too much.'
