305. Biblical Wisdom for Mental Health with Laura Smith

305. Biblical Wisdom for Mental Health with Laura Smith

In this episode of Radical Radiance, host Rebecca George welcomes Laura Smith to the show to chat about her newest book Holy Care for the Whole Self - all about faith and mental health. Laura shares her personal journey and passion for helping others care for their mental health in a biblical way. Laura gives practical tips for supporting those struggling with mental health issues and the importance of prayer and community.

Laura L. Smith has been searching her whole life for beauty. Not in the world—there’s plenty of that—in the crimson of a cardinal’s feather, in the sound of waves crashing along a shore, in the melody of a Beatles’ ballad, or in a Chagall stained glass window. The world is filled with beauty, but for her that was another story. It took her years to discover her true beauty, to fully grasp she is made in the image of her Creator, and therefore, she is beautiful. The incredible thing is…so are you. You were marvelously made by God to inspire awe. No matter what the world tries to tell you, no matter what you try to tell yourself. No one can rob you of the incredible true identity God instilled in you. Smith tells stories (through books, blogs, and speaking) in hopes of helping you discover what took her so long to see: your beautiful true reflection in Christ. Smith lives in the college town of Oxford, Ohio with her husband and four kids. Rebecca and Laura chat about:

  • Importance of caring for our mental health
  • Laura's personal journey of trauma and experiencing PTSD
  • The intersection of faith and mental health
  • Misconceptions about mental health
  • Encouragement for those struggling with mental health
  • How to support someone struggling with mental health

272. Walking Free with Micah Tyler

272. Walking Free with Micah Tyler

In this episode, recording artist Micah Tyler and Rebecca chat about his new book Walking Free: Taking Small Steps To A Big God!

Songwriter and recording artist Micah Tyler writes, performs, and lives out "battle-tested" music that gives glory to his God. Micah is the recipient of multiple Dove and K-LOVE Award nominations, and has written four BMI Top 25 Christian Songs. Along with five number #1 radio hits, his song Different is certified Gold by RIAA. Today, Micah's performance schedule ranges from youth camps to conferences to touring with other artists.

Micah's story up until his break-through into commercial success was, in the best sense of the word, different. Hailing from the small town of Buna, Texas, he spent his young adult years as a youth pastor. The future artist picked up the guitar to fill the need in his ministry for worship leadership, and from that time God's calling for his life got louder and larger than he could possibly have imagined. After nine years, Micah left his stable job as youth pastor, moved his family into a single-wide trailer, and began traveling the region performing his music. Micah recalls, "I told the Lord, 'I don't know how to be a professional musician, but you've taught me to be faithful.'" With few connections in the music industry, Micah made ends meet by working as a sausage delivery truck driver while he pursued his calling. The story of Micah's music career serves as a testimony that, with a little faith and a big God, incredible things are possible.

Micah and Rebecca talk about:

  • Micah's testimony (and when God made it clear he was supposed to pursue music)
  • What does faithfulness mean?
  • The story behind his song Different
  • What spurred the idea of his new book Walking Free
  • Pursuing a relationship with Jesus despite external circumstances
  • How songwriting is different than writing a book

269. Silence the Inner Critic with Mary Marantz

In this episode, Rebecca and Mary talk about the importance of silencing our inner critic and focusing our hearts on God’s word. This podcast series follows each individual chapter of Rebecca's debut book Do the Thing: Gospel-Centered Goals, Gumption, and Grace for the Go-Getter Girl and explores relevant scripture passages in each episode (this one is about Chapter 10 - Silence the Inner Critic). She shares a journaling exercise she has developed based on a passage from Philippians (verse 8) that can help identify incorrect or unhelpful beliefs. In this episode, 2 Corinthians 2:14-17 is discussed which reminds us that we are the "aroma of Christ" and to spread the fragrance of the knowledge of him. The inner critic and overthinking are common themes explored in the conversation, and small steps are encouraged to move forward.
