Is physical therapy the unappreciated child of healthcare? The talk with Heather Linden from the UFC
How does physical therapy help athletes like Ronda Rousey, George Saint-Pierre or Conor McGregor? Why is it important to involve physiotherapists in the training of athletes before a fight and after the fight as well?
Heather is the Director of Physical Therapy Center of the UFC. The UFC managed to establish mix martial arts as a respected and highly valued sports discipline gaining popularity across the globe. It is only natural that they would set the standards of care regarding physical functionality for athletes in this sport. Heather explains how she transitioned from olympic athletes program to the UFC. The beginnings were not easy, as many athletes were not familiar with a physical therapist, yet her and her team managed to gain the trust they needed to increase the performance of the athletes. Heather shares her views on the "hot vs cold" controversy and clarifies how electro-stimulation can be used. In her opinion, a lot of doctors don't know enough about the level of professionalism in physical therapy and neglect to cooperate and communicate more with experts in this field, often with severe consequences.
Guest: Heather Linden, Director of Physical Therapy, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)

"Bacteria have there own language" The talk with Fatima AlZahra'a Alatraktchi, PhD
How quickly can the modern medicine detect bacteria? Why is the communication between bacterial colonies so important to understand?
Fatima approached a bio-chemical phenomenon in her own way, her background as a physicist, her drive and perseverance made her discoveries worthwhile. She developed a sensor that makes it possible to detect bacteria in any sample within 60 seconds, even in early stages, where other more commonly known methods would not show the results. This is a ground breaking thing for patients, who depend on the early recognition of infections, since their immune systems might be deficient. Find out more about her journey in the interview.
Guest: Fatima AlZahra'a Alatraktchi, PhD in Molecular biology, Founder of PreDiagnose, Assistant Professor at Roskilde University

"Athletes screw up before the race even starts!" The talk with Alan Goldberg
Do only professional athletes need a performance coach? Why is performing during practice so much easier than in the "moment of truth"? Is visualisation helpful indeed?
In this podcast Dr. Alan Goldberg explains how he structures his work with athletes, what he teaches them and where working on the surface doesn't help at all. His very vast experience with many kinds of athletes across different sports enabled him to develop a good sense of the essentials. What is the main difference between an athlete's best and his worst performance? A great question, that often needs quite a lot of digging to be answered. Dr. Goldberg stresses the importance of awareness and focus, both essential skills for performance improvement.
Guest: Dr. Alan Goldberg, performance couch and sports consultant

When "no problem" becomes the new "you're welcome" The Talk with Dr. Bonnie Clipper, DNP, MA, MBA, RN, CENP, FACHE
Why are only 10% of all nurses men? What is the so called "compassion fatigue"? Can we help nurses foster their innovative skills?
Bonnie and I took a different road on this podcast. Instead of simply gazing on the marvels of nursing innovation, we have mudded through some topics together that could be considered as difficult. Bonnie explained me how the generational gap influences expectations especially in communication. I wanted to know if ageism poses a problem for nurses and if it is really such a great idea for nurses to become business owners.
Bonnie certainly knows the nursing landscape in America inside out and we will see more of her and her colleagues in the future for sure.
Guest: Dr. Bonnie Clipper, DNP, MA, MBA, RN, CENP, FACHE, Chief Clinic Officer at Wambi

What your doctor doesn't want you to know? The talk with Cathrine DesRoches, PhD
How much more transparency is required for medicine to truly help the patient? Are doctors afraid of losing their privileges?
Cait and I dive into the pros and cons of OpenNotes. Imagine that as a patient you could access the transcripts from all your clinically relevant moments with a physician or therapist freely and at any moment. It is possible that patients would engage much more with their health, not only prepare for next visit at the doctors office but also double check on their previous conversation with the clinical staff. In Cait's experience, working with over 200 health institutions in the US, OpenNotes brought a lot of benefits on both sides. Meanwhile, some people remain sceptical about sharing patient's notes, afraid of increasing the administrative efforts or dealing with obnoxious patients. Time and practice will show, if complete transparency is the right way, how to change patients' engagement with health services for the best.
Guest: Cathrine DesRoches, PhD in Public Health, Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, executive Director of OpenNotes

Silent Healthcare, 3 Jungs mit klarer Vision. Der Talk mit Dr. med. Robert Kromer

"In many cases we are the last hope for our patients!" The talk with Inge Kormelink, CEO Clinica Tambre
Why is Clinica Tambre among the best in the world in the field of IVF? Did the demography of patients with fertility issues change in the last years?
How did Inge find her way into this medical field in the first place?
All these questions are answered in our podcast, where Inge grants us an insider view on IVF situation these days. She explains very clearly that clinical excellence and reputation is not build over night and doe involve so much more than just great medical service. It is the very nature of Inge's team, to be as comforting to her patients as possible. Starting with enabling the patients to speak their native language to the fact that she offers psychological in-house counsel for the couples. Her team and her hard work have made the dream of becoming a parent possible to a great number of couples, for that the German broadcast WDR included her and Clinica Tambre in their documentary about IVF.

"Anaesthesiologists should use EEG monitoring during general anaesthesia!" The talk with Prof. Brown
Can computational sciences help anaesthesiologists in their daily work? How much do we understand general anaesthesia and the effects it has on the brain? Do we really need to accept that we simply feel groggy after waking up from general anaesthesia?
As Professor brown explains, the general idea about anaesthesiology is, that nobody knows how it works, although it is done daily, in the US alone around 60 000 times. By employing EEG it is possible for Prof. Brown and his colleagues to determine very precisely how specific drugs effect specific parts of the brain, showing unique patterns in the EEG. Common misconception about their complexity is refuted by Prof. Brown, explaining that reading an EEG is not much more complex than say reading a ECG. He also explains that the choice between general anaesthesia and local one is based on medically relevant factors, not on the wish of the patients. He also gives a brief introduction in his early research on the circadian clock and its changes due to light adjustments. Of course I had to ask about those scary cases when people felt their surgeries since they were not in a induced reversible coma, but they could not move. Prof. Brown shed some light on these cases.
Guest: Emery Neal Brown, M.D., Ph.D. is an American statistician, neuroscientist, and anesthesiologist. He is the Warren M. Zapol Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School and at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)

Don't' take drugs, but if you do, check what's inside first! The talk with Daan van der Gouwe
Maybe you are against drugs, maybe you are for some kind of middle ground regulation, or maybe, you are a hippie! It doesn't matter, because what is important is that if a drug user decided to take drugs, the best we can do is educate them about the substance and make sure the purity of the substance is high!
Daan is in the harm reduction and drug control for a lot of years and what he saw during those years shaped his understanding of what's going on for the better. Besides having a unique insight into the classic on-the-street drug market, he knows about dark/deep net market places. The stations that his colleagues work at provide the initial possibility for drug users to ask for help or guidance if they need to do so. Additionally, by checking the drug purity, Daan and his colleagues already saved thousands of users from potential fatal consequences due to impure drugs available on the market.

Don't forget to train your legs not just your upper body! The Talk with Nino Cherkezishvili
Why does anybody need a personal trainer? Why do some people have such a problem starting to engage in physical exercise and can the wrong motivational base for training be harmful?
Nino is a professional personal trainer from Georgia and she explains how the differences in the educational and cultural framework between Georgia and the UK account for the number of people exercising in both countries. She discusses with me why some people won't be happy with their bodies, even if they engage in physical activities and she highlights the fact that personal trainers have to take care of the mental side in their clients just as much as they care for the physical stuff. We both acknowledge the dangers of social media sport gurus/influencers and break down, why it isn't absolutely wise to try replicating what you see online. As a bonus Nino explains why the controversy on static and dynamic stretching doesn't make much sense.
Guest: Nino Cherkezishvili, Personal Trainer from Georgia

"Fly like a butterfly sting like a bee!" The talk with a ringside doctor Davide Bianchi, MD
Did you know that when a fighter gets cut, it is not the ringside physician who treats him first? Who can or should become ringside physician and why is it essential to have one on the spot?
In this informative and lively talk, Davide explains to me what it takes to be a ringside physician. As a fighter he understand, what nuances must be taken into account before heroically stoping the fight and maybe robbing someone of fame and money. As a ringside physician he understands the required calmness in heated situation, when audience is not happy. Damage to health in combat sports however does not only occur during a fight, but also during the preparation phase. Bad training methods and dehydration to make weight are the killers before any fight. "Fighters can water up in 24 hours but there is no way their electrolytes can be restored as quickly." This results in fatigue and consequences during the fight. Listen to Davide and his anecdote and you will know why!

When healthcare doesn't care! What can palliative care do for the terminally ill? The talk with Timothy Ihrig, MD
What ist the question that medicine needs to answer for itself in the next few years? Why do we need to rethink the way healthcare is applied?
Imagine somebody you love and adore is terminally ill, now imagine that medicine does things that person and not for the person! How would you feel? Tim and I tried to get to the bitter truth of dying and topics connected to death in the reals of healthcare. We touch on the topic of physician's responsibility, where Tim explains the necessity for truth over fear. He explains that changing the narrative from dying to "last period of living" empowers the patient to set a priority on "what is sacred to them". We discuss the assisted suicide and the choice of pain management in general. Overall the honest and direct communication with the patient and his family seems to be absolutely crucial. Tim offers statistical evidence for the efficiency of true care and helps us understand how economically futile the obsessive "let's try and fix it" ideology can be. Take a moment and listen to the talk, to Tim's anecdotes from his long years in the palliative care and actively unravel his thoughts for yourself.

"A diagnosis is a moving target" The talk with Danielle Ofri, MD
What does it mean for a doctor to become the patient? How important is to posess intellectual humility?
Danielle is a gifted writer and her career as a doctor gave her enough input to produce a number of great books. These books and the experience that inspired her to write them are the topic of this podcast. We speak about the necessity for emotional balance in doctors. There is a need for doctors to have enough room to be angry, sad, or happy. Moreover doctors need to be able to tend emotionally to their patients as well. Danielle explained to me that the whole topic of medical error is a complex one. Definitions and data are not conclusive and people should be careful when interpreting them. Danielle ends the interview with some great advice for future doctors.

"If you have a nail in your eye, don't pull it out, just go to the hospital!" The Talk with Dr. Edna Joyce, MD
Children aspire to take up the profession of their parents, sometimes there is a twist in the story as we shall see with Dr. Joyce! Why is it bad for you to rub your eye, she will deliver the answer!
If you wondered what Glaucoma is about and how it is diagnosed, this podcast will help you understand that. But not only that, you will find out why ozone therapy is such a help for the glaucoma treatment. Dr. Joyce is a proponent of homeopathy and she gives to anecdotal examples of a nutritional advice she gave to her patients and actually helped with their eye sight. As a diabetic with hypertension, she has great experience with self-management of her condition, using healthy nutrition in the first place. She explains how the blue light damages the retina. I was interested in her use of psychological knowledge in her job as a doctor. Her message is clear, people need people not diagnostic/treatment machines. Doctors need to know about their patients lives, feelings and thoughts, not just about their health status. By the end of our talk, she explains why she wrote a book named "Are you crazy?".
Guest: Dr. Edna Joyce (Fatima) Santos, MD,DPBO,SBO, consultant in ophthalmology

"ADHD is like driving a Ferrari with bicycle breaks!" The talk with Dr. Edward Hallowell
Did you ever wonder, how it feels to have ADHD? Is it really a curse or just a blessing in disguise when properly managed?
More questions and even more answers are presented by Ned and myself in this lovely talk about ADHD. Additionally, since Ned wrote more than 20 books so far, we discuss why and how people worry, we talk about our age of constant interruption and he explains how children can have a more fulfilled life. Ned speaks best for himself, paraphrasing him would be pointless.

Did you know there are environmental and seasonal allergies? Are you informed about the healthcare situation in Serbia?
Lejla introduces us in the beginning of our talk to the situation of Serbia's healthcare, she tells us about the progress that was made in the recent years and where the potential is not completely exhausted. Later on we discuss allergies and how they differ, why the skin-prick test is still a great method of testing allergies and we shed some light on the controversy about vaccination.

"Be brave enough to be your authentic self!" The talk with Sasha Shillcutt, MD
Why is failure in medicine a taboo topic? Why should a woman shine on more days than just her birthday celebration?
What do you need to know before you look for a mentor?
Sasha was a wonderful guest, who took her time to explain me her views on a number of topics. Thanks to Sasha I have learned a couple of things.
Mentoring is important, but if you do not know, what you need help with, the best mentor won't help. I have learned that work compression can be a total killer for a person, who needs to step out of the work environment to assess their current situation, "taking time" proceeds "having time".
Men and women both and preferably together need to find a way how to change the system so both can be parents to the best of their abilities, the children will appreciate it. And I have learned what it means to be "brave enough"

Space medicine, oh YEAH! The talk with Virginia Wotring, PhD
If you have never heard about space medicine and space pharmacology, you will now! By the way, what do you think causes the astronauts the biggest headache in space?
Virginia delivers answers to all these questions in an enormously informative talk. She gives us a wonderful insight into the world of NASA, pharmacological and medical issues connected to space flights. As Virginia explains, things have there up and downs (badam-tsssss). Astronauts are exposed to radiation, they have to deal with minimal gravity and female astronauts face different issues than male astronauts due to the biological differences.

Medizin, keine Branche für das Rampenlicht?! Der Talk mit Dr. med. Christian Gingert

What are the cultural differences between Swiss and Russian doctors? What is it, that Moscow's doctors can learn from the European colleagues and vice versa?
Claudine moved to Moscow and works in a private hospital essentially driving the change management forward with the goal to increase the quality of medical care. She has learned that there are serious differences in the patient-doctor communication between Russia and Europe. Moreover she explains, what the healthcare situation in Russia, specifically in Moscow looks like from her point of view. She would recommend her senior colleagues who like to pass on their experience to visit Moscow and work there for a few years.

Mandatory year of volunteering in medicine? The talk with Dr. Tom Catena
What would you do, if you were the only doctor available in a place with around 750'000 people? Can you imagine making a volunteering year mandatory for all doctors in the world and how would this effect the medical calling?
Tom tells a wonderful story about his path from the job in the US Navy to his job in Africa, where he has been through more than majority of us can imagine. The scarcity of professional support made him appreciate the ability to improvise and to try out things the best way possible with the essential aim of saving a life. Since he fell in love with Africa, he supported and cared for thousands of patients even during war times. His spiritual fuel makes it possible for him not to give up even in the worst moments. Our open and honest exchange about the relation between medicine and economy might cause an uproar, but it is a discussion we need to have.

"Nurses are natural innovators!" The talk with Rebecca Love, RN, MSN, FIEL
Did you know that a great amount of nurses leave healthcare after only two years on the job? Should nurses be considered in healthcare product developments?
Rebecca Love delivers a clear statement about the nursing situation in the US and it is not a pleasant one to say the least. Before we get apocalyptical here, there are some good news too, so calm down. Truth is, that although it is the nurses who run around the patients the whole day and night, not the doctors, nurses are only marginally involved in many of the developmental processes in healthcare. Nurses lack the proper management education and often the correct terminology to convince certain stakeholders. Rebecca disposes of some myths in regard of nurses and shares, why she became a nurse in the first place.
Guest: Rebecca Love, Innovator, nurse and former Director of Nurse Innovation & Entrepreneurship, School of Nursing Northeastern University

Humans and monkeys are not so different after all! The talk with Prof. William von Hippel
Do all systems governed by social rules include moral choices and moral imperatives? Why do we care so much, what the other people get compared to us?
Bill answers these questions and many more in a brilliant manner, picturing a complex sketch of different influences on our behaviour. As an evolutionary psychologist, he looks for clues and similarities in our common ancestors, the primates. He shortly vocalises his opinion about why the sciences have to fight idealogical movements and prove their worth as sources of knowledge and important discoveries. Bill dives into the topic of human communication due to the technological changes. as well.

Cancer treatment, why the hell are we making patients more sick? The talk with Prof. Thomas Seyfried
Have you heard about the research conducted by Otto Warburg (Nobel Prize in chemistry, 1931)? If not, you might not know the modern follow up either! How is respiration and fermentation connected to cancer?
How can calorie-restricted ketogenic diets and fasting help with cancer?
The answers and much more coming from a man, who dedicated his life to understanding cancer and how to treat it, without making the patients sicker using radiation or chemotherapy. Professor Seyfried explains in simple terms, how the fermentation of glucose, damage to mitochondria and inflammation are connected in terms of cancer development. He was often labeled as controversial, yet his work is based on solid science and the obvious need for an alternative treatment for cancer patients. We scrutinise together, why this knowledge is either unknown to doctors, or suspiciously frowned upon. In his books, you can find more detailed information about his work and the work of his colleagues.

"We are all miserable, because we are trying so hard not to be!" The talk with Prof. Anna Lembke
Did you ever wonder, why we have so many people suffering from depression? Is spirituality just a buzz word these days offering false hopes?
Find out, why Professor Anna Lembke, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and behavioural sciences, Director of addiction medicine at Stanford and a book author, chose to work in the field of psychiatry. She explains very well, how addiction come to be very difficult to deal with. We discuss why some fields in medicine are not cooperating sufficiently. Anna is a wonderful person to talk to and her book "Drug dealer, how doctors were duped, patients got hooked and why is it so hard to stop?" gave me an insight on the huge problem of medical drug use as a "state of art" treatment for any sort of condition. In connection to this she explained, why pain has an intrinsic value, what "toyotisation" of medicine is and how lack of care continuity kills healthcare.
Guest: Prof. Anna Lembke, Associate Professor and Medical Director of Addiction Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, program Director of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Fellowship and Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic

Wendy's in a hospital cafeteria, you must be kidding! The talk with Dr. Joel Kahn, MD, FACC
Vegan lifestyle, why should you consider it? What is wrong with our hearts thanks to our jobs?
Joel is simply a fun guy to talk to, he is an interventional cardiologist and as such fights every day on behalf of a diet, which he considers the best for the heart. In our talk he was as kind as to explain me not only the current state of affairs in terms of dietician's 101, but also where the research stands and what claims can or cannot be trusted. Bottom line is that the Mediterranean states like Greece and Italy possess healthy nutrition habits, which provides them not only with longevity but with a relatively sickness-free life. To spice up things he explains how diets influence blood flow, which influences for example sexual arousal ability for both, male and female. And because Joel is not afraid to speak up up about sensitive topics such as body shape relation to health, we discuss the morbidly obese labeled as plus size models, too.
Guest: Dr. Joel Kahn, MD, FACC, Founder of the Kahn Center for Cardiac Longevity

The situation of healthcare in Russia, a changing landscape! The talk with Prof. Sergey Morozov, MD
The former rector of the EMC Medical School in Moscow, Professor of Radiology and now a CEO of a radiology center in Moscow, Sergey explains very vividly, how Russia's healthcare is changing in the last few years. One could call it dramatic, but things are improving rapidly in all dimensions included the medical education, clinical excellence and quality of patient care.
Sergey brings together two topics, which for a long time have been separated with dire consequences, medicine and management. He discusses how important the understanding of recruitment, change management and innovation are inside the field of medicine, not at its outskirts. As the former president of European Society of medical Imaging Informatics, he tells a compelling story about how digital imaging helps increase the quality of diagnostics everywhere.
Overall a wonderful talk worth listening to!

Do you have an idea how much muscle mass you loose between the age of 20 and 80?
We all heard at least once in our life, older person uttering the words " I need to take it easy, I am not as fit as I used to be! ". Well, what a lot of the older individuals do not know, is that inactivity causes their muscle to fade. Less muscle, less protection of their bones. That can be fatal! Andrea explains why the intake of protein becomes so vital in the older stages in life. Sarcopenia is the scientific term and was for long time simply accepted as a cost byproduct of ageing. Thanks to researchers like her, we know more today. Additionally, speaking about ageing, Andrea explains what the cellular senescence is and how it is connected to cancer. I also get schooled on the topic of wisdom, which she comprehends in a different way.
