Joana Amorim is a multi-generational farmer, building a new earth, dreaming in foreign tongues, emerging from her forest speaking the language of plant medicine, and offering the fruits of her labor as garden-grown fuel for her community. Born and raised in Portugal, Joana learned quickly in film school as an animator, that she needs freedom in order to let divine inspiration flow through her. Her American partner fell in love with Appalachia while searching for a place to call their own. Joana joined him from Portugal, not knowing quite what to expect in the first wooded land she'd ever encountered, but fully intent on making a sustainable home here as a back-to-lander.
She now works with Permaculture Action Network to organize communities around music & food - getting fingers in the Earth alongside neighbors, and growing their own sustenance, as the sounds of local musicians fill the air, and sunshine fills their souls.

ABOUT ANNA LEIGH HOMA
Born in Germany (her father was in the Air Force) Anna’s family moved to Berea in October of ’79, and never left.
Anna Leigh is a Jill-of-all trades; she’s worked in fast food, pizza delivery, gas stations, factories, as an office administrator, in taxes, payroll and bookkeeping, as a wedding photographer, newspaper reporter/photographer, and for nearly eight years has been a group fitness instructor and personal trainer.
In 2007 she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism from Eastern Kentucky University, and in 2019, returned to earn a Bachelor’s of Science in Health and Exercise Science.
Her hobbies include punching things for fun (boxing), picking up heavy things just to put them back down again (heavy lifting), CrossFit, reading (Game of Thrones, Book 3 and The Walking Dead currently), music (metal warms her cold heart 😂), movies, and video games.
Anna Leigh really tries to live her life the best I can. She loves her son to the moon and back, and everything she does, she does for him.
Annna Leigh’s motto is:

A 'rabble-rouser' in the best damn sense of the term, Ali Blair has a heart for community revitalization, born from her rebel roots. Raised Jehovah's Witness, now an atheist who wears the label of 'small town witch' proudly, she came to deeply value unity and inclusivity as a young adult, and is now using that passion to question the status quo in little ol' Berea, Ky, where some folks in charge would rather everyone look and believe just like they do.
Ali's efforts to awaken Old Town, the teeny downtown area that was falling into disrepair and disuse, have generated new businesses in the area amid a 10-12 week summer concert series. Families and folks of all backgrounds convene weekly around a cabin stage, vendors come to sell their wares, and free music is enjoyed by all. The spirit of pride and sense of community this builds is immeasurably precious, and locals are noticing a change in the trajectory of Berea because of it.
*Correction: I stated in the beginning of this episode that Ali's 3rd annual concert series alone was created via a grant which brings in "$50,000 altogether." The actual number for the 2019 season alone is closer to $90,000, including inkind goods and services.

In 2017, Wilcox founded Women Count USA, a national database and femicide census of women and girls murdered by men in the United States.

Her resume is impressive to say the least, containing such feats as becoming Executive Editor at "The Good Men Project," doing market research for health organizations, organizing city-wide cleanups, teaching yoga, self-esteem-building and meditation to youth, organizing projects to bring food, clothing and school supplies to students in need, and raising her mixed-race sons in the era of Black Lives Matter. She graduated from Berea College in 2004 with a degree in Art and went on to obtain a masters degree from Eastern Kentucky University in Student Personnel in Higher Education. Emily worked in higher education for over a decade before leaving the field to pursue work that aligned with her passion for community development and justice.
