Let’s Talk About Death, Baby

In which R drops a bombshell regarding BRCA, the breast cancer gene, tells you how to kill someone (self defense!) and encourages sex magick. Ya. It’s not just a Red Hot Chili Peppers song. Trigger warning: suicide reference, reference to death, and violence.

China’s Genocide: The Fight to Free Uyghur Muslims in Concentration Camps, w. Jewher Ilham

China’s Genocide: The Fight to Free Uyghur Muslims in Concentration Camps, w. Jewher Ilham

Complete show notes at www.rainbowstarmusic.com/episode12 ABOUT JEWHER ILHAM Jewher Ilham is an author, activist, & daughter of Uyghur scholar, Ilham Tohti, an internationally noted moderate voice who was dedicated to bridging the gap between the Uyghur people and the Han Chinese. Jewher arrived in the United States in 2013, following the detention of her father at the Beijing airport, as they were prepared to travel to Indiana University for Professor Tohti’s fellowship. This was the last time she saw her father. At eighteen years old, with little English and no plan, and unable to return safely to China, Jewher found herself having to start a new life in Bloomington, Indiana. Meanwhile, her father’s situation worsened. In September of 2014, he was given an unprecedented life sentence based on the writings on his website, Uyghur Online, that promoted peaceful co-existence between the Uyghur people and Han Chinese. His conviction and sentence swiftly were condemned by the then-Obama White House and leaders throughout Europe and the EU. During the period between her father’s arrest and sentencing, Jewher enrolled as a student at Indiana University.  As an advocate for her father, she testified before the U.S. Congressional-Executive Committee on China, wrote op-eds in the New York Times, met with a number of government officials including former Secretary of State John Kerry, and received numerous awards worldwide on behalf of her father. In 2015, she recounted her experiences in her book, Jewher Ilham: A Uyghur’s Fight to Free Her Father (University of New Orleans Press). She was invited to be the key speaker at 2019 Ministerial to advance religious freedom hosted by Pompeo, the Secretary of State. During the week of the 2019 Ministerial to Advance religious freedom event, she was also invited to the White House to speak to the President on the Uyghur issue. Following that, she had the opportunity to speak at the UN general assembly on the atrocities the Chinese government is committing on the Uyghurs. In December 2019, Jewher accepted the Sakharov Prize on behalf of her father and urged the European Parliament to take a stand and hold the Chinese government accountable. Jewher graduated with her bachelors degree at Indiana University in May 2019. S She is currently taking a year off to assist on a documentary film (‘Static & Noise’) about Uyghurs, as well as to continue to advocate on behalf of her father. Building A New Earth: w. Farmer/ Artist/ Activist Joana Amorim of Permaculture Action Network

Extra goodies in complete show notes here. www.rainbowstarmusic.com/episode7

Joana Amorim is a multi-generational farmer, building a new earth, dreaming in foreign tongues, emerging from her forest speaking the language of plant medicine, and offering the fruits of her labor as garden-grown fuel for her community.   Born and raised in Portugal, Joana learned quickly in film school as an animator, that she needs freedom in order to let divine inspiration flow through her.  Her American partner fell in love with Appalachia while searching for a place to call their own.  Joana joined him from Portugal, not knowing quite what to expect in the first wooded land she'd ever encountered, but fully intent on making a sustainable home here as a back-to-lander.
She now works with Permaculture Action Network to organize communities around music & food - getting fingers in the Earth alongside neighbors, and growing their own sustenance, as the sounds of local musicians fill the air, and sunshine fills their souls.

Training To Slay Patriarchy, w. Personal Trainer Anna Leigh Homa

Complete show notes & extra juicy goodies HERE

Join RAINBOW and Personal Trainer Anna Leigh Homa as they empower one another to create gender equality, in the gym & beyond.
Hear RAINBOW’s big ol’ rant on police brutality, racism, and misogyny (some kind of 3-legged stool/tool of the patriarchy). Dive into (more) ways that (paid) men in authority are passing the buck to unpaid mothers who’ve lost their children to drunk driving.
In this episode, you’ll be reminded of how strong you are, and learn how to never take “No” for an answer again.
This episode is jam-packed with feminism, and we can’t wait for you to soak it up.

ABOUT ANNA LEIGH HOMA

Born in Germany (her father was in the Air Force) Anna’s family moved to Berea in October of ’79, and never left.
Anna Leigh is a Jill-of-all trades; she’s worked in fast food, pizza delivery, gas stations, factories, as an office administrator, in taxes, payroll and bookkeeping, as a wedding photographer, newspaper reporter/photographer, and for nearly eight years has been a group fitness instructor and personal trainer.
In 2007 she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism from Eastern Kentucky University, and in 2019, returned to earn a Bachelor’s of Science in Health and Exercise Science.
Her hobbies include punching things for fun (boxing), picking up heavy things just to put them back down again (heavy lifting), CrossFit, reading (Game of Thrones, Book 3 and The Walking Dead currently), music (metal warms her cold heart 😂), movies, and video games.
Anna Leigh really tries to live her life the best I can. She loves her son to the moon and back, and everything she does, she does for him.
Annna Leigh’s motto is:

“I am me, unapologetically.“

Grief & The Quest To Save The World, w/ Molly Smith

Complete Show Notes & Extra Goodies HERE RAINBOW and Molly met as a result of an invitation for R. to come on Molly and Amy Harmon's 'Little Sister Radio Show,' a brilliant hour of feminist talk & spinning female musicians' tracks.   Molly greeted R. with thoughtful handmade gifts from local shops, and the friendship was instantly sealed. Molly is a Prospect Research Analyst at Berea College, and she loves cooking, reading, comedy, pub quiz shows, the Great British Bakeoff, swimming, cartwheels, writing, and pretty much just being able to do anything with friends. Other than ice skating. Molly hates ice skating. It hurts. "Pocketful of Miracles," by Dr. Joan Borysenko, the daily meditations book quoted regarding wintertime and birthing the Light "Everything You Need To Know About Miscarriage"  Stats on the high prevalence of miscarriage, a pervasively, perniciously taboo topic that affects 1 in 5 recognized pregnancies, therefore, many women, and can be utterly devastating to those who experience it

Waking A Sleepy Appalachian Town & The Witch Within, w/ Ali Blair

Waking A Sleepy Appalachian Town & The Witch Within, w/ Ali Blair

Complete show notes & extra goodies @ www.rainbowstarmusic.com/episode4

A 'rabble-rouser' in the best damn sense of the term, Ali Blair has a heart for community revitalization, born from her rebel roots.   Raised Jehovah's Witness, now an atheist who wears the label of 'small town witch' proudly, she came to deeply value unity and inclusivity as a young adult, and is now using that passion to question the status quo in little ol' Berea, Ky, where some folks in charge would rather everyone look and believe just like they do.
Ali's efforts to awaken Old Town, the teeny downtown area that was falling into disrepair and disuse, have generated new businesses in the area amid a 10-12 week summer concert series.  Families and folks of all backgrounds convene weekly around a cabin stage, vendors come to sell their wares, and free music is enjoyed by all.  The spirit of pride and sense of community this builds is immeasurably precious, and locals are noticing a change in the trajectory of Berea because of it.

*Correction:  I stated in the beginning of this episode that Ali's 3rd annual concert series alone was created via a grant which brings in "$50,000 altogether."  The actual number for the 2019 season alone is closer to $90,000, including inkind goods and services.

PODCASTS REFERENCED; FOR STUDY & CRIME PREVENTION PURPOSES

* Cold Podcast: I was addicted to this for a while.  The true story of Josh Powell, a narcissist who emotionally manipulated his wife for years, then brutally and horrifically murdered her, got away with the murder, then went on to kill himself and two toddler sons.   It's a gut-wrenching story, but I found it important to hear, as if it were a violence-prevention guide of its own accord.

* Hell & Gone Podcast:  Arkansas holds deadly secrets, and many of them lie in - yet again - men in authority not doing their jobs

* Man In The Window: Podcast about the serial killer who could have been caught long before he raped & murdered myriad women, (as well as a few dogs) had men in authority simply done their jobs
