How Much Sanitizer Is Too Much?
I have never been a fan of hand sanitizer, that’s until I started going hiking and I noticed Dr Bronner’s made some healthier versions using essential oils. I was always concerned about the chemicals in conventional sanitizers. Sanitizers are full of toxic chemicals, like phthalates, which mimics hormones and disrupts the endocrine glands. Endocrine disruptors have been linked to diabetes and obesity. Using sanitizers also disrupts our hand microbiome, the “good” bacteria that keep our skin, and our bodies, healthy. But once we hit COVID, all the news had folks in fear and people really went crazy with sanitizing solution. I took a plane from NYC a couple months ago and all the passengers on the plane, which was packed by the way, had out disinfectant sprays and sanitizer spraying everything and wiping down everything. I love a clean environment but this was overboard. I started coughing from all the sprays. The irony is that the sanitizers have triclosan which can damage the immune system. Ultimately, soap and water is the best and only way to clean yourself in the least harmful and most effective way. When you are out hiking or in an environment where you need to disinfect your hands, opt for phthalate-free and triclosan-free sanitizers. When you have type 2 diabetes, there are no cheat days, but the good news is that most people are able to reverse their type 2 diabetes with a whole foods vegan diet within 2 weeks. The best accountability buddy you could have is a produce delivery box because once your kitchen is full of produce, you will eat it all to make sure the food does not go bad. Scripture to Keep You Motivated on Your Health Journey
If you want to get off metformin, the answer is nutrition. The Self Care Salon was created for folks looking to reverse type 2 diabetes and prediabetes and prevent type 2 diabetes. You create the environment from within yourself to allow healing to take place. It starts with a decision. Decide you want to eat clean. I’ve always taught that you setup your kitchen for success but folks get really caught up in their heads before they can even take that step. Don’t complain about your condition. Use it as an opportunity to do better. There is always room for improvement. Bob Marley said complaining is prayers to the devil. Here’s another way: Isaiah 33:10 says “But the LORD says: “Now I will stand up. Now I will show my power and might.” You have it within you to do a different thing, to show up more fully in your life. Type 2 diabetes is an opportunity to do that. It is a wake up call. How to Achieve Emotional Balance & the Importance of Rituals
Our bodies run on a circadian rhythm, which is an internal clock or schedule of which all the important processes that happen in our body run on and it is dictated by our wake, eat and sleep cycles. But we also have an internal clock and rhythm for productivity and energy.  For peak energy and performance, it doesn't serve us or our mission/life’s purpose to work for hours straight throughout the day and 7 days a week. We have to take breaks - mental breaks and digital breaks. My guest on today’s episode, Stephanie Redcross West, started Vegan Mainstream based on a simple idea: to build a pro-vegan world, we need a solid infrastructure of successful businesses and brands to ensure that an ethical lifestyle is accessible to everyone, everywhere. Opt for a Holistic Childbirth Experience
“Black women are three to four times more likely to die due to pregnancy-related causes than white women and often report experiencing mistreatment during care.” ~ Fast Company We have a broken healthcare system, which I often refer to as a sick care system but it does not have to be this way. There was a time when black women got the care and support they needed from other black women and had healthy babies. It is still happening now on a small scale. The Way Forward
At this point, I think most of us have wised up to how sick this country is and we are in a healing phase at the moment, which will be painful for most of us who are conscious beings. Many folks want to know how do we get through this and in my opinion, the answer is to have hard conversations with folks who do not look like you and may not think like you. We are all in our silos and what that will do is breed more division. We only get to a place of having love and empathy for all when we can listen and sit in understanding on some level. You may not have understanding with lived experience but you can find points of commonality. We also need to educate ourselves so we are having intelligent conversations. These are the weapons of change. I had the pleasure of having an awesome sistah in the fight against chronic disease plaguing our community, Dr Ruby Lathon, on the Raw Food Health Empowerment Show. Dr. Lathon is a certified holistic nutritionist, wellness coach and an advocate for the life-saving benefits of plant-based nutrition. She inspires with a powerful story of recovering from thyroid cancer through alternative treatment focused on a whole foods, plant-based diet and has worked as a researcher and an award winning engineer, and now teaches others how to re-engineer their health and live disease free. Think about the thing that is exhausting you, let’s say it’s work for example. Why do you do the work that you do? What are you missing in your work and in life? If we are eating for comfort, there is something we probably feel we are lacking in that moment that the food fills for us even temporarily. Can you find happiness and comfort beyond food? Here are some ideas: Read a novel or a good book Write your thoughts and emotions in a journal. Take a long walk outside. Watch a favorite movie or television show. Sing and dance. These are all examples of self care practices that will help you overcome food addiction or using food not to nourish your body but to comfort or quell an emotion. The Book Black Mothers Need to Read
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that around 700 women die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth every year. Black mothers are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than White women. Currently, we are seeing similar trends with the effects of COVID-19 on the Black community, with Black counties having infection rates nearly three times higher and death rates that are about six times higher than majority white counties. Disparities around maternal mortality and COVID-19 death rates are impacted by pre-existing conditions that, per the reports, Black people are more likely to experience, like hypertension and cardiovascular issues, due to social and structural inequalities and food choices. How to Maintain Happiness in a Marriage
My mother has always said happiness is a choice. Sometimes it feels hard to make that choice, especially if you are surrounded by unhappy people. I think that’s why I have always rejected negative people from my circle of friends. It sounds harsh but I knew I did not have the capacity to help them so I focused on making sure the bubble I lived in was a positive one. It helped me see possibilities and potential in life. It made (and continues to make) for a joyful life of promise and potential. To be happy, you have to focus on self-care. This may mean getting a massage, practicing emotional freedom technique (EFT), practicing daily meditation, yoga, tai chi, etc. Pick something that resonates with you. Research has shown that tai chi has tons of beneficial psychological impacts, ranging from increased self-esteem to reduced stress, anxiety, and mood disturbances (including depression). Yoga, laughter, dance, gardening and even music can be fun and effective at lifting your mood. Research has also shown that gardening also decreases the severity of depression and disrupts negative rumination that can keep us in a dark place emotionally. Finding personal peace is foundational. Then, to maintain that peace while in a union is the advanced level of spiritual growth. This episode we talk about how to maintain your personal happiness while in a marriage. ALERT! Christine McDonald healed IBS, gout, arthritis, anxiety, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and got off all of her meds not fully raw. She eats alkaline vegan and 80% raw.
Hi, I'm Christine McDonald. 4 years ago I was really sick and couldn't lose the 65 lbs I gained from my 3rd son. I was a half marathon runner with arthritis, gout, IBS-D, hereditary high blood pressure, high cholesterol, migraines, anxiety and more. One day, I was running and asked God for the truth about health. He told me to go back to the beginning. The beginning meant the Garden of Eden. That is where the healing is. God's first intentions for us.  So I began doing research and began to baby step at changing my diet. I started with 21 days of alkaline eating cutting out the acid foods. Then I reintroduced the acid foods one by one so I could see which ones triggered me. Sure enough meat, eggs and dairy brought back my pains from arthritis, gout and migraines and also brought back anxiety. The wheat products brought back IBS-D. Etc etc. As I continued to baby step, I finally got to doing raw challenges and juice fasts.  I have wanted to be fully raw, but I find it easier to sustain on raw till dinner. Then have an alkaline cooked dinner meal. I consider myself still baby stepping and hope to one day be fully raw. But I never beat myself up. I love myself to health. Poor digestion can manifest in different ways, like excessive gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux and fatigue. Proper food combining can alleviate these symptoms. I said have fruit for breakfast only but this is only if you’re eating cooked food. The main point is to not do fruit after cooked food. The 2020 POTUS Election - Part 2
I’m a huge supporter of Marianne Williamson. She is the candidate I have waited for my entire career. She is also a huge inspiration because she is so well-rounded. She is spiritually wise and well-versed on all the national and international issues of the POTUS position. Most of all, personally she inspires me how she is able to have conversations about highly charged topics and combat it with historical facts, patience, and peacefulness.  I’m constantly in political debates with my family, but I admit, I often end up yelling and being annoyed and frustrated that the other person is saying stuff that I beyond grossly disagree with. Being the passionate person that I am, part of my spiritual journey has been to get skillful with engaging in conversation of disagreement without being annoyed by it. Why I Don’t Worry About a Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Is Genetic Engineering Ethical?
Food is not the only thing being genetically engineered.  Parents are using IVF and preimplantation genetic testing and choosing to implant embryos less likely to have certain genetic diseases and chromosomal disorders. Others are using prenatal testing to detect genetic abnormalities and, in some cases, choosing to terminate pregnancies. Gene editing tools will allow for designer babies where parents can remove or add characteristics with sophisticated levels of detail. You can select a baby who is tall, has a high IQ, and is an extrovert. The time is here where we need to think about our values and ethics around this. Where do we stand on this genetic manipulation? How much of taxpayer dollars should we allow for everyone to have access to this technology? How to Live a Plastic Free Life
Toxic chemicals leach out of plastic and are found in the blood and tissue of nearly all of us. Exposure to them is linked to cancers, birth defects, impaired immunity, endocrine disruption and other ailments. Americans discard more than 30 million tons of plastic a year. Only 8 percent gets recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, is burned or becomes litter. Mind you, plastic does not degrade. Did I mention, there are thousands of landfills in the United States and buried beneath each one of them, toxic chemicals from plastics drain out and seep into groundwater, flowing downstream into lakes and rivers? Small fish eat micro-plastics and big fish eat small fish. So plastic is ending up in almost all life in the water and on land. This is why I am so over plastic and working on being mindful when I’m shopping so I can avoid buying plastic and contributing to this destructive cycle. How to Support Heavy Metal Detoxification
Did you know using aluminum foil and consuming fish can lead to cognitive decline, or even worse, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease? I’ve seen women in my family use the foil to bake fish a lot growing up. Symptoms like low energy, mood imbalances and cognitive issues could be stemming from heavy metal poisoning from fish, silver dental fillings that slowly release mercury into the body, environmental pollutants (think cigarette smoke and air pollution), tattoos, vaccinations, and household products (like air condition filters, cosmetics, antiperspirants, aluminum foil, and fabric softeners). Debate: Is Makeup Good or Bad for Your Wellbeing?
Halloween is coming up and there will be a lot of folks putting on makeup. This is all fun and games until it’s not. I am not and have never been a fan of makeup. Primarily because I value and respect authenticity. I also feel like self-love comes from embracing yourself as you are instead of bending to other people’s perception of beauty. These days, I am anti-chemicals in and on the body and makeup is full of them. Now, this position on makeup is not really shared among all health coaches. I brought my colleague, Mishra, on the show to share her views, which is the polar opposite of mine.
