When it comes about Filipino identity and culture has so much than just where you came from or what language you speak. If you ask me when I first started with the podcast, I was first taken back by all the different cultures and language but as I continued with this journey, it comes to the land-based identity.

AJ Clifforde Alcover (1st generation) Filipino-Cebuano who immigrated from Digos City in the Philippines. He is a former graduate and alumni of Brown University. He is currently on the pre-med track on his way to go for Medical School.

Marnelli Joy B. Ulep is the Program Development Manager for the Business Administration Division at UH West Oahu. She holds a BBA in Marketing and International Business and a MEd in Higher Education Administration, both from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. 

For many years, she was involved with community organizations like NaFFAA and groups that empower Filipino/a youth, like the Sariling Gawa Youth Council and Miss Oahu Filipina Scholarship Pageant. She currently is an member of Advisory Boards for local high school academies.

Marnelli is also a wife, mother to two, and daughter to immigrant parents. 

Fourth generation Filipino-Kama'aina Settler in the Kingdom of Hawai'i, I introduced to you, Tiffany Nohea Kasoga (she/her/hers). Through the season of her life she calls this, "motherhood" and the journey in re-discovering her culture again especially since growing up she did not have any close ties that helped her uproot her own cultural upbringing or the way she was brought up varied through her genealogy.

Key terms you should know:

• Kama'aina - is a word describing Hawaii residents regardless of their racial background, as opposed to kanaka which means a person of Native Hawaiian ancestry.

Ashley Marie is a second generation Ilokana Filipino American. Roots in Ilocos region. Ashley is someone who aspires to break cultural stigma.

Kasamas Rise Up, Podcast Host meets Carlo Farinas, a second generation Filipino American born and raised in the island of Oʻahu as the only child.

Carlo is someone with great aspirations who continues to seek his Filipino heritage and roots.

A timeline of his grandparents lineage:

My great-grandpa on my mom's side Grandpa Ikong immigrated to HI to work on the plantation and was recruited by his brother Bernard who came by boat from PH after WWII

1979

My great-grandma followed afterwards to also work at the dole plantation

1986

Kasamas Rise Up, Podcast Host meets Emily Erika, first-generation Filipino-American who was raised on the west side of Oʻahu. She is currently a second year medical student with hopes of becoming a primary care physician. She is passionate about mentoring first generation students especially those with aspirations of going to medical school. Emily is a granddaughter of a Filipino Sakada, Victoriano Tombaga who was known as ʻPapa Victorʻ to her family. In this podcast narrative episode we reflect on her culture and identity especially as a Filipino-Ilokano who is continously learning about her identity.

A conversation with Jordan Tano, a 1st generation-2nd generation Filipino, Chinese and Japanese American who was roots between Guam, California and Hawai'i. For his podcast narrative we briefly talk about this local identity and reflecting on what it means for him to stay close with family specially his grandparents and those he look up too. Jordan is the producer behind Hawai'i Verse Podcast (hawaiiversepodcast) as well as an entrepreneur for Hawaii Saloon Suites. (hisalonsuites) where he is helping local beauty professionals in the community. 

Gaven Sugai (he/him) 4th generation Filipino-Japanese born and raised in Kailua, O'ahu. He is an accountant by day and a podcaster at night. Growing up, He used to identify himself more with his Japanese side than Filipino. I didn’t embrace Filipino as an equal part of me until I dated my wife. It was only through cooking and learning Filipino cuisine that I embraced being Filipino and Japanese as equal parts of him.

A conversation with a Filipino immigrant who immigrated to the Kingdom of Hawai'i with his siblings and parents through the petition of his family. Clyde is a first generation Filipino who is the first in his family to received a higher degree with a Master in Electric Engineering. You can say he achieved the "American Dream" that his families has dream for him. Most children of immigrants desires to give back to their parents to be the "hope" of their family. Through Clyde's narrative he openly shared about his struggles that he had to go through as he tried to assimilate and "play the game" to fit in to the society without losing his sense of identity and culture.

A conversation with FIlipino-Hawaiian instructor, Kumu J. Hauʻoli Lorenzo-Elarco is a, first and foremost, Hawaiian and Filipino. He was raised by the Kīpuʻupuʻu rains of Waimea, Hawaiʻi but currently resides in Waialua, Oʻahu. He is Instructor of Hawaiian Language at Honolulu Community College. His research interests include Native Hawaiian Intellectual History, Hawaiian Language Newspapers, Hawaiian Literature, and understanding ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi through a Hawaiian Worldview. He is also a committed dog dad to his two spoiled huskies.

A conversation with Angeley Pasco, an aspiring filmmaker, mental health advocate whose dreams is to uplift stories of her Filipino community. When it comes to her own filipino culture, to reclaim her own culture is to basically just going back home, seeing my family, visiting my hometown and just reminding myself where I came from and where my roots are.

Meticulous, Hard Working, Caring, Blessie Vergara is a second generation Filipino American who is a children of immigrants. Both of her parents got married in the Philippines when they were adults. Her dad immigrated to Hawai’i first, thanks to a petition from her grandmother (from her Dad's side).  A year later, her mom followed suit. Both her and her kuya and were born in Honolulu. Her  family is from Pampanga, which is a province a little under 2 hours north of Manila. My dad is from Sta Rita, and my mom is from Guagua.

Hard-working, Introspective, Curious, Algeo Rosario was born and raised in Honolulu, HI to two Ilokano parents. Growing up in Salt Lake, he went to school with a lot of military kids, but was also surrounded with many Filipinos as well. He went to the University of Hawaii at Manoa to study Communications and minored in Ilokano.He currently works as a Digital Content Specialist.  Prior to that I was at Ka Leo O Hawaii for 4 years, working as a student journalist for UH Manoa and had a short gig at the Department of Land and Natural Resources working in communications.

Easygoing, curious, imaginative - Ryan Geronimo (he/him) is a second generation, Filipino American born and raised in the Bay Area who moved through Hawai'i for college.

A Conversation with Shania Amodo with Culture, Identity and Family, we talks about what it means for her to reclaim her own filipina identity specifically being the second to the eldest child of the family. She shares that for one to reclaim her own identity is a personal experience tat one must have to live through and its through the lived experience that helps reconnect us back and ground us to where we are meant to be.

A conversation with a international student at UH Manoa, we have Adi hear with us on Kasamahan Co sharing his experience as a PhD Student. He would say I’m a Filipino, not an immigrant so the generational classification might not be appropriate. I consider myself transient in Hawaii and planning to go back home after my academic training. Both parents are from Negros Oriental in the Visayas region. I would say that this time with Adi, getting to know where he came from and the many things that kept him grounded while studying abroad at a foreign country. 

A conversation with MJ about her own filipina identity. Mary Jane Livingston has been practicing Dental Hygiene for the past decade. She dreamt of being a hygienist since High School. Mary Jane worked in all fields of dentistry, from the front and back office assistant to Dental Hygiene professor at Phoenix College and NYU. Mary Jane is passionate about her profession and strongly believes that education lays the foundation and trust for clinician patient relationship. On her free time, New York City has become her playground as she loves to explore new restaurants and events!

A conversation with Dr. Celina Hayashi about what it was like growing up not only in the island of Hawai'i but specifically the island of Maui as a Filipino whose dreams are to make her ancestors proud such as her grandparents whom emigrated from the farmlands of Ilocos Norte, Philippines in 1946 in order to give their children and future grandchildren the opportunity to pursue a better life through higher education in America. Through their sacrifices in coming to the US and the backbreaking work they endured as the lowest-paid “sakadas” in Hawaiʻi‘s pineapple fields.
