Is an addiction a lifelong illness and a disease or a learned behavioural disorder?

Is an addiction a lifelong illness and a disease or a learned behavioural disorder?

As the debate and research continue side by side over 100s years later, there is still no quick fixes or magical pill to abruptly arrest, address, treat or eliminate an addiction or addictive behaviours once an individual has started the process that often ends in or leads to a loss of one's ability for self-regulation regarding the behaviour or behaviours in question.

Does this mean then that an addiction is a lifelong illness and a disease or a learned behavioural disorder?

This episode of the recovery show explores this question with a three criterion definition that looks at a wider cross section of addictive behaviours and presentation other than that of substance use, abuse or misuse.

I apologize... 12 Step is a valid Treatment philosophy for recovery.

It would be correct to say I did not hold the 12 approach to be best suited as more than an Aftercare community group support system. I now stand corrected and would liked to revise my known position. An example of what true and sincere practice of acceptance, forgiveness and the willingness to readily consider new information as a rule but more so in recovery. Knowing that the power of choice is always available to you to then verify and mindfully choose to accept or reject the new information to modify your old scripts and narratives about it.
