In this week's episode, we have Jens Nielsen who'll share with us how an employee with 0 knowledge in real estate investing came to own a large number of apartment units and mobile park lots in a span of 4 years. He'll also share what he has learned in his journey in multifamily investing.   

Our guest speaker, Jens Nielsen, is the principal of Open Doors Capital. His company’s mission is to “Open Doors to your secure financial future through multifamily investing.  

Originally from Denmark, he has been living in the United States since 1996. After a successful career in telecommunications and IT, Jens shifted from an employee to an entrepreneur. He was attracted to multifamily real estate due to the many benefits and began investing in 2016. Currently, he is the owner of 74 apartment units and mobile home lots in New Mexico and Colorado.   

He has invested in over 800 apartment units, 2000 mobile park lots and over 6000 storage units plus mortgage note funds and private money lending.

From Maintenance Man to Millionaire with Glenn Gonzales

In this week's episode, we have the author of Maintenance Man to Millionaire: Real Estate Wealth Creation for Everyday People, Glenn Gonzales, as he talks about how he got started and how he took advantage of the opportunities available to him. In this interview, we'll learn that there's no work too big or too small as long as you do good in whatever you do and when opportunities come your way, don't be afraid to take risks.  

Our guest speaker, Glenn Gonzales,  is currently the CEO of Obsidian Capital Company. He has 25 years of experience in the multifamily real estate industry. He has overseen the operations of over 7,000 units across 38 properties in five states. Has a proven track record of profitable multifamily, commercial and residential real estate investments.  

He served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors for the Washington Multi-family Housing Association and was elected as President of the association in 2006. From 1994 to 1998, Glenn was a board member for the Utah Apartment Association. He also served a two-year term as the Chairman of the Public Relations Committee and a one year term as the Secretary-Treasurer for the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM). Since 1994, Glenn has also been an instructor for the Apartment Associations in local markets.  

Prior to his position as President and partner at PPA Real Estate Management, Glenn spent many years working in multi-family and commercial property management with companies such as Equity Residential, Evergreen Management Group, Glacier Management and gained a great deal of experience at Pacific Property Company, a value-add investment firm.   

He is also a licensed real estate broker in multiple states and Certified Property Manager from IREM. Glenn sold most of the assets owned by NAPA Ventures and only has 2 remaining with his old business partner.

In this week's episode, we have Indiana's Real Property tax Lawyer, Kathryn Merrit-Thrasher where we'll be discussing how property taxes are calculated and how it comes to play when purchasing a property. Kathryn focuses her practice on real estate tax appeals and real property commercial litigation. She works closely with commercial property owners and managers to ensure property tax appeals are comprehensively pursued from the initial County level to the Indiana Tax Court level.   

Kathryn graduated first in her class, summa cum laude, from Ball State University’s Honors College in 2006.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the Miller College of Business in Corporate Finance with a minor in Economics.  While at Ball State, Kathryn was a Financial Executives Institute Scholar, a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and was an author and presenter at the Eastern Economics Association Conference in New York City, New York.   

Kathryn graduated with highest honors from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, receiving her Master of Business Administration degree in 2012.  While attending the Kelley School, she was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society.  Kathryn received her law degree, magna cum laude, from Indiana University’s Robert H.   Phil purchased his first property in 2010 in Norfolk, VA while honorably serving in the United States Navy as a Naval Special Warfare Combatant Craft Crewman (SWCC). While he enjoyed jumping out of planes, shooting machine guns, and practicing small unit tactics with Navy SEALs and other Special Operations Command operators, he realized in that first purchase that real estate was something he had a passion for and committed to pursuing it further when his time in the service was over. He took a real estate license course while still in the Navy and upon separation from service in 2012 immediately went to work selling his buddies from his old unit homes as they transferred to Virginia from other duty stations.
