Ep. 9: The Tragedy of Macbeth

Ep. 9: The Tragedy of Macbeth

Hey everybody, welcome to Reel of Thieves! Don't forget to rate and share with a friend if you like the show! It's the best way to support.

This week, we're diving into the realm of Shakespeare adaptations with the most recent, Joel Cohn's The Tragedy of Macbeth. I can't be happier that I chose it because it's absolutely incredible. Also, is seeing a film heavily influenced by German Expressionism and power-hungry rulers a sign of the times? Probably! Smoke 'em if you got 'em, boys, the night is dark and full of terrors.

We go over the behind-the-scenes documentary, introduce Computer as a permanent fixture of our show (you're welcome), shout out all our fans in Germany, and dive into the play and some major themes before wrapping it up with our week's assignment.

Art is the antidote to our ills. Let's get to it.

Episode 8: A Fistful of Dollars

Hey Everybody! Don't forget to rate and share the show!

Twitter: @ReelofThieves

This week, we're going over a film that is close to my heart that is an unofficial adaptation of another film close to my heart, its A Fistful of Dollars, the famous adaptation of Yojimbo that never asked if it was okay until after it was released. We go over the similarities and some of the differences as well as one key theme that is completely lost in translation.

So let's ride off into the desert on a horse with no name! Don't be a troll, be an artist!

This week, we've got to go fast with Sonic The Hedgehog! Video Game adaptations have had a bad rap, but this one is actually pretty good. We go over the references and riffs in the film from both the games and other films. We even discuss some of my own attempts at video game adaptations at the end.

So strap in, kid, we're in for the fastest ride of our lives with Sonic here, on Reel of Thieves!

Episode 6 - Apocalypse Now!

Episode 6 - Apocalypse Now!

Don’t forget to Rate & Review!

Twitter - @ReelOfThieves

Instagram - @ReelOfThieves

Hey everybody! Welcome back to Reel of Thieves, the show where we go over all the references, riffs and history of your favorite stuff and this week, we’re doing a tour in Nam with Apocalypse Now!

This is a loose adaptation of Heart of Darkness by Sir Joseph Conrad made by Francis Ford Coppola, one of the biggest names of the American New Wave. This was an artistic film movement attempting to replicate the French New Wave in the US. It’s typically known for lackadaisical structure, elements of Italian Neorealism mixed with Interpretive, improvisational, method-style acting and cinematography.

So while there is the spirit and some pieces of the Novella here, it is not the same kind of adaptation we analyzed last week. Which is exactly why I chose it.

We’ll go over the plot of both pieces, what I found to be interesting in the film, and go over some of the history behind the making of Apocalypse Now!

Episode 4: Are Adaptations Really THAT Bad?

Episode 4: Are Adaptations Really THAT Bad?

Hey everybody, I'm Pete and this is Reel of Thieves, where I go over all the references, riffs and history of your favorite stuff! This week, we're going back to film school with an overview and discussion on adaptations.

I would be honored if you left a review on whatever platform you're listening on. It's a genuine pleasure to be a part of your day, and it really helps out the show by letting people know you listen to, and love, this show! It's the biggest thing you could do.

Following me on Twitter and Instagram is a great way to keep in touch: @ReelOfThieves. You'll get updates on new episodes, show clips, and random retweets and thoughts from yours truly. Also, you can send me an email over to reelofthieves@gmail.com

If you're on Anchor.fm, you can sub to the show and you can tip over on GoodPods! Both are great ways to support the show directly.

So why "back to film school?" Well, that's where you learn how masterful these kinds of projects can really be. But honestly everyone has had exposure to adaptations even in K-12 schooling. West Side Story? That's Romeo and Juliet! Gone with the Wind was a novel first! There's literally thousands upon thousands. Its quintessential knowledge for all art: It's all theft. That's what this show is all about at its core, so why not start at the heart of it all?

Thanks again for listening to this week's episode. Don't be a troll, BE AN ARTIST!

Hey everybody! I'm Pete, and welcome to Reel of Thieves! A place where I talk about all the little nuances and nods to our favorite stuff in our favorite stuff. Super meta, I know, and I'm pretty proud of it. I hope you enjoy it!

While you're here, could you do me a super duper schmooper big favor? Could you give me a rating here on wherever you're reading this? A rating and a review really helps the show. And the better the rating, the higher up this show is on the platform, app, or website you're listening on! That means more people like you to find the show! And it's all thanks to you...THE PEEPLE!

So this week took a while to get out. A ton of stuff going on, all super positive I assure you (I'm also lying) and it took a little longer to record and edit and ship out. But, it's worth the wait! Because this week, It's Panos Cosmatos's Mandy. It stars Nicolas Cage and as one of his best performances. It was also chosen by you on Twitter, so thank you!

I'm super happy that I got a chance to watch this, and if you're an Art House Horror Fan, you're going to LOVE Mandy

Episode 1: Gunpowder Milkshake

Episode 1: Gunpowder Milkshake

Hey everybody! Welcome to the very 1st episode of Reel Of Thieves. I'm Pete, and on this show, we go over new films and shows and break them down to find all the references and riffs they make.

This episode, we talk about Gunpowder Milkshake. This might be a title that's confusing for some, and that's because its a reference to the structure of the film. This isn't a random title: this is literally a blended shake of some great action films. But does that mean it works? What did they take and what did they leave behind? Was it a good decision? Was it on purpose, or by happenstance?

We go over all that in under 20 minutes. So, what are you waiting for?! Check us out!
