How to Read the Risale-i Nur
When people from different parts of Turkey came to Ustad Nursi and asked him to teach them, he would tell them not to come to him but to read the Risale-i Nur. Thus, everybody can read the Risale-i Nur on their own and benefit from it. One does not need permission from a teacher who had already studied the Risale-i Nur with another teacher. Nevertheless, we can think of some guidelines to follow in order to maximize our ability to benefit from the Risale-i Nur. This episode, based on a similarly titled section on the reflections-RN.org website, offers some of these guidelines.

This episode, based on a similarly titled section on the reflections-RN.org website, offers guidelines about what to intend in reading the Risale-i Nur.

What is the Risale-i Nur
The Risale-i Nur is a Qur’anic commentary that makes substantial contributions to the Islamic tradition especially in the fields of dialectical theology (kalam) and Sufism (taṣawwuf) but also offers important insights about the methodologies (uṣūl) of the sciences of Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr) and prophetic traditions (ḥadīth). This episode is based on the similarly titled "What is the Risale-i Nur" section on Reflections-RN.org under Introduction.

Who Was Bediuzzaman Said Nursi 04 (mp4)
Bediuzzaman Said Nursi (1878-1960 C.E., 1295-1379 Hijri) or Ustadh Nursi, as his followers refer to him, was a great scholar, gnostic, and saint of the fourteenth century of the Islamic calendar. He struggled his entire life to understand, implement, teach, and uphold the message of the Qur’an and the Prophetic example. His unshakable certainty in the truths of faith provided a bastion of refuge and hope for Muslims in the late Ottoman Empire and republican Turkey at times of calamitous defeats and moral collapse that sealed the end of the Ottoman Caliphate. Today, the treasure of knowledge he left behind, the Risale-i Nur, continues to teach and inspire believers all around the world. This episode is based on the brief introduction to Bediuzzaman Said Nursi's life and teachings as provided on the Reflections-rn.org website.

Nineteenth Word 9
“There are three universal things that make our Lord known to us: One is this Book of the Cosmos. We have heard a small part of its testimony in thirteen flashes from the “Thirteenth Lesson” of the Treatise of Light in Arabic. Another is the Seal of Prophets, blessings and peace upon him, who is the Great Sign of that great book. And the other is the Qur'an of tremendous standing. Now, we should get to know and listen to the Seal of Prophets, blessings and peace be upon him, who is that second articulate demonstration.”

Eighteenth Word 03
The Eighteenth Word is composed of three points: The Third Point that we are reflecting on in this episode is a commentary on the verse “Say, ‘If you love God, follow me, and God will love you… (Qur'an, 3: 31)” This point builds on the second point and establishes that since there is beauty in the creation, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the messenger and beloved of God and God examplar among the human beings to be followed. It is a beautiful and meaningful grace of God that we got to read this piece a couple of days before the birthday of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the 12th night of the Hijri month Rabi al-awwal.

Seventeenth Word 07
The Seventeenth Word is a commentary on the verses: "We have adorned the earth with attractive things so that We may test people to find out which of them do best, // but We shall reduce all this to barren dust (Qur'an, 18: 7-8)." and "The life of this world is nothing but a game and a distraction… (Qur'an, 6: 32)" It exposes the reality of the world as a means to a higher end that is not worthy of attachment in and of itself.
