SCOTUS, The Big Lie, Fascism: All Illegitimate
On our first post-Roe episode, we share some of the voices from the streets over the last couple days outside the Supreme Court demanding the federal government restore the fundamental right to abortion across the country NOW, including Sunsara Taylor (@sunsarataylor), Paxton Smith (@paxtonsmith) and youth organizers. Then, writer and pundit Wajahat Ali talks to Sam about the January 6 hearings which have unearthed in great detail (though not exhaustive, as Ginni Thomas's key role continues to be obscured) the Trump regime's attempted coup plot. Read his latest piece for The Daily Beast: No, Our Institutions Didn’t Hold After Jan. 6—Just Look at the GOP and follow him on Twitter at @WajahatAli. How are we accepting a ruling that reverses a fundamental right for more than half the population, issued by an illegitimate court full of fascists appointed by a (perhaps soon-to-be-indicted) criminal?  Answer: we're not. Samuel Perry: Christian Nationalist Violence Post January 6
Sam Goldman talks to Samuel Perry, associate professor of sociology at the University of Oklahoma, about his research into the American Christian Nationalist movement. Follow him on Twitter at @socofthesacred. Read his two recent articles in Time magazine: January 6th May Have Been Only the First Wave of Christian Nationalist Violence and How Trump Stole Christmas—And Why Evangelicals Rally to Their Savior. Order his new book The Flag and the Cross: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy. From the Refuse Fascism Statement on First Anniversary of January 6 Fascist Coup Attempt:  The January 6 coup attempt demonstrated that fascism is not just the worst of a pendulum swing. It is an all-out assault on the rule of law aiming to strip democratic rights from whole groups of people they see as sub-human. Trump and his fascist movement have torn up the norms and thrown out the rule book, yet the outrage and hopes of people on the side of justice keep getting diverted into the very channels that are being eviscerated, and away from the kind of deep, mass, society-wide struggle that is needed. The GOP: Entrenching White Christian Domination
Coco Das (@Coco_Das) interviews historian Thomas Zimmer (@tzimmer_history) about “polarization” in American politics and the shared agenda of white Christian domination across a spectrum of right-wing political forces.  At this time last year, January 6th was on the horizon. Trump’s big lie was already taking hold among millions of people. And for months, Refuse Fascism had been sounding the alarm and organizing ongoing, sustained, non-violent protests to change the trajectory of Trump’s base marauding through the streets while the decent people hid in their “safe spaces.” This is a situation that still needs to be transformed. As long as the fascist threat looms, it is up to all of us to understand and act to stop fascism from consolidating in this country, and Refuse Fascism will continue to bring you these conversations and our analysis of things as they develop. Show where you stand by wearing it on your head… there are new Refuse Fascism beanies available! No Capitulation on Abortion Rights!
"Highlights" from this week in fascism and future coup attempts (recommended reading: Trump’s Next Coup Has Already Begun) including the “options for January 6” PowerPoint uncovered by the January 6 commission and Matt Gaetz on Steve Bannon's podcast this past Thursday. Gaetz said an "army of patriots" should get ready now to "fight" for the US - Bannon said "shock troops" divided into teams could take over some 4,000 government positions. This is three things: a threat, a strategy, and also an exposure of what happened the first time around. Then, Sunsara Taylor (The RNL Show) on the moves to overturn Roe v. Wade and a conversation with an Ann Arbor based activist who traveled to the Michigan State Capitol on Dec 1 to shut down the State Legislature and sound the alarm on the emergency for abortion rights. Read Jessica Prozinski's piece Michigan Activists Shut Down Legislature to Read Statement on Abortion. Much is made of the fact that the majority of Americans support Roe v Wade. But it’s meaningless to simply state that without backing it up. The history of fascism has shown us that dominating the public square and the public discourse – whether or not they have majority opinion on their side, goes a long way in determining whether fascism prevails or not. A majority of obedient Americans are no obstacle to these Christian fascists. But even a portion of that majority of people in the streets – waging a sustained, non-violent struggle to say hell no, you’re not slamming women back to the days of back alley abortions and forced pregnancy, this makes it known to the whole world who the majority is and what they’re willing to put on the line. The State of Fascism Denial + The Fight for Abortion Rights
Coco Das (@Coco_Das) speaks to an activist who traveled to Washington DC this week to protest for abortion rights as the Supreme Court heard opening arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization - the case which is primed to overturn Roe v. Wade and enable abortion bans in more than half the states in the US. Mentioned in this conversation: Will Supreme Court conservatives overturn Roe? Their casual contempt for women is not a good sign by Amanda Marcotte on Salon. Then, Coco talks to Paul Street about the state of fascism and the state of fascism denial as we near the close of 2021. Paul Street is the author of ten books including his latest, This Happened Here: Neoliberals, Amerikaners, and the Trumping of America, which is about to be published. Follow his work at paulstreet.org. We really can’t overstate the importance of having a presence in the streets – in the public square – over the next few months. Much is made of the 8/10 Americans who support Roe v Wade. But it’s meaningless to simply state that without backing it up. The history of fascism has shown us that dominating the public square and the public discourse – whether or not they have majority opinion on their side, goes a long way in determining whether fascism prevails or not. 8/10 obedient Americans are no obstacle to these Christian fascists. But 8/10 people in the streets – even 5/10 waging a sustained, non-violent struggle to say hell no, you’re not slamming women back to the days of back alley abortions and forced pregnancy, this makes it known to the whole world who the majority is and what they’re willing to put on the line. Carol Anderson: White Supremacy & the Second Amendment
Sam Goldman interviews Dr. Carol Anderson, the Charles Howard Candler Professor and Chair of African American Studies at Emory University and the author of White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide, One Person, No Vote: How Voter Suppression is Destroying Our Democracy, and her latest book The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America which was the focus of this conversation. Follow Dr. Anderson at professorcarolanderson.org and @ProfCAnderson. Topics covered in this episode: the shameful Rittenhouse acquittal, the complicity of local police in the lynching of Ahmaud Arbery, and the defeat of the federal charges against the Unite the Right rally organizers… where does this all come from and how does this relate to a fascist offensive that involves a whole fascist movement that attempted a violent coup on January 6 to overturn an election? How does it relate to the GOP which has since purged itself of anyone disagrees, and the deepened and hardened belief of millions in their fascist base that this violence was righteous and may be necessary in the future? How does all this fit together? Where is all this going? Where does it come from? And where do we go from here?  * * *  On Wednesday December 1, the Supreme Court will hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, where the state of Mississippi had specifically asked the Court to overrule Roe v. Wade. A Beautiful Rising Or Rising Fascism? The Rittenhouse Trial
Sam Goldman and Coco Das discuss the Kyle Rittenhouse trial in the proper context of the fascist movement he is a part of. Recommended reading: Coco’s recent article The Rittenhouse Trial and Two Sides in Contention: A Beautiful Rising or Rising Fascism and Reflections on Kenosha by Paul Street. Follow Coco Das on Twitter at @Coco_Das and Paul at @Streetwriter17 We’re continuing to pay special attention to the three trials with tremendous stakes:  In Charlottesville, Virginia: The federal civil trial of 24 white supremacist groups and individuals who came to Charlottesville in August 2017 and unleashed fascist violence that led to the murder of Heather Heyer.  In Brunswick, Georgia: the case against Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael, and William Bryan who are on trial for hunting down and murdering Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed 25-year-old Black man who was out on a jog.   And in Kenosha, Wisconsin: The criminal murder trial for Kyle Rittenhouse who traveled with an AR-15 to a Black Lives Matter protest in Kenosha where he shot and killed two protesters and wounded another.  All three concentrate the fascist mobs and threats of violence that are being unleashed to build the fascist movement and consolidate power & it reflects the ways in which there is an assault on the rule of law in this country and the most vicious overt white supremacy that threads it all together.  ALSO: Penn America released a report this week exposing what they are calling educational gag orders that outline how lawmakers in nearly half the country this year have tried to muzzle educators in regards to topics that include racism, sexism, and American history. As detailed in the report from January to September, a total of 54 bills concerning K-12 schools, higher education institutions and state agencies were introduced, the report says. Eleven of those bills have become laws in nine states, including Texas, Tennessee and Oklahoma. Read more here: pen.org/report/educational-gag-orders * * * After the discussion with Coco Das, Sam interviews Vara Ramakrishnan with Strike for Choice on their plans to take action on Dec 1 and how you can join. Dec 1 is the day the Supreme Court will hear Dobbs vs Whole Womens Health, the case which poses an imminent threat to abortion rights and the possible wholesale gutting of Roe v Wade. You can take action wherever you are to refuse to go along with the evisceration of this essential right with the hashtag #StrikeForChoice. Elie Honig: The January 6th Insurrection Isn’t Over
Legal analyst and former federal and state prosecutor Elie Honig discusses what we know about the January 6th insurrection and any chances for real accountability (hint: the DOJ/Merrick Garland would have to take action and there is zero indication that they are going to do so). In addition to watching him on CNN, you can follow on Twitter @eliehonig, read his book Hatchet Man: How Bill Barr Broke the Prosecutor's Code and Corrupted the Justice Department and listen to his podcast Up Against the Mob. Mentioned in this episode Andy Zee in Conversation with Paul Street on The Revolution Nothing Less Show: Two Separate Nations: Developments in the State of Fascism and How That Is Shaping the Political Situation Gregg Gonsalves: COVID, Public Health & U.S. Mythology Fascist Mobs: 1850 to Today Wajahat Ali: The Death March of White Supremacy Holocaust Survivor: It Could Happen Here Meanwhile After the Virginia election, everyone who’s not a fascist seems to be playing the blame game over electoral strategy. But fascism’s advance runs deeper. As this week's elections in VA show, Republicans don't have to cheat to win. The danger is real that Republican legislatures in states like Arizona, Georgia, Texas erect enough barriers to the ballot and destroy enough democratic norms their party simply cannot lose a close race. Freespeechforthepeople.org is urging Attorney General Merrick Garland to resign from his post after nine months of inaction to hold Trump and his allies accountable for inciting the January 6th insurrection and other federal crimes they may have committed. It’s good that people are refusing to accept this accommodation to fascism. That said, it’s time for people to recognize that it isn’t just one or another individual doing this - but that ‘democratic’ norms, institutions, and the Democratic Party can’t be relied on to handle this threat. As revolutionary leader Bob Avakian has aptly stated, “The Democrats are committed to 'playing by the rules' and 'relying on the norms' of 'democratic' capitalist dictatorship, while the Republicans are moving to tear up those norms and rule through an open, undisguised capitalist dictatorship.” Send your comments about the Refuse Fascism podcast to samanthagoldman@refusefascism.org or @SamBGoldman. Time To Mess With Texas: Abortion On Demand & Without Apology
A few days after the Supreme Court refused to block the extreme Texas abortion ban, Sam Goldman (@SamBGoldman), Coco Das (@Coco_Das) and Sunsara Taylor (@SunsaraTaylor) discuss the roots and ramifications of this dangerous new law. Paul Mason: History, Ideology & Resistance to Fascism
Sam Goldman interviews writer Paul Mason about his new book: How To Stop Fascism: History, Ideology, Resistance. From the publisher:  The far right is on the rise across the world. From Modi's  India to Bolsonaro's Brazil and Erdogan's Turkey, fascism is not a  horror that we have left in the past; it is a recurring nightmare that  is happening again - and we need to find a better way to fight it. In How to Stop Fascism, Paul Mason offers a radical, hopeful  blueprint for resisting and defeating the new far right. The book is  both a chilling portrait of contemporary fascism, and a compelling  history of the fascist phenomenon: its psychological roots, political  theories and genocidal logic. Fascism, Mason powerfully argues, is a  symptom of capitalist failure, one that has haunted us throughout the  twentieth century and into the twenty-first. History shows us the conditions that breed fascism, and how it can be  successfully overcome. But it is up to us in the present to challenge  it, and time is running out. From the ashes of Covid-19, we have an  opportunity to create a fairer, more equal society. To do so, we must  ask ourselves: what kind of world do we want to live in? And what are we  going to do about it? Follow Paul Mason on Twitter at @paulmasonnews and read more of his writings at paulmasonnews.medium.com. Matthew Rozsa: The Parallels Between Trump's "Big Lie" and Hitler's
Sam Goldman interviews Matthew Rozsa (@MatthewRozsa) about his recent article for Salon.com: Trump's Big Lie and Hitler's: Is this how America's slide into totalitarianism begins? which reads in part:  "The Germans who 'believed' in Hitler's Big Lie did so not because he had  any proof that Germany had been stabbed in the back, but because they  hated Jews, hated leftists and wanted to restore the German Empire to  its pre-World War I glory. The Republicans who 'believe' in Trump's Big  Lie do so not because there is any logical argument that Biden stole the  election, but because they don't want to admit that a majority of  Americans do not support their policies. In order to stay in power, they need to disenfranchise racial minorities, low-income voters and anyone  else who might be inclined not to support Republican politicians." Susan Neiman & Daryle Lamont Jenkins: Learning from the Past to Chart the Future
It's the 50th episode!  We started the podcast this past summer; the week millions began to pour into the streets rebelling against white supremacy and demanding justice for George Floyd. When we began a fascist regime was tightening its grip on society; we called the podcast "Inside With #OutNow" as the movement to get these fascists out became all the more urgent.  Since then, we've covered Trump's refusal to wear a mask as a signal to fascism and other forms of fascist propaganda, the white supremacy, xenophobia and misogyny that is the core of this fascism, Trump’s death cult, the Christian Fascist movement and its embrace of Trump, American exceptionalism and American mythology; faith, resistance and complicity under fascism. We've shared voices from the frontlines: from Portland and LA to North Carolina and the suburbs of Chicago, and overall the need to stop fascism and organizing methods to mobilize all who can be united against it. Throughout all of this we have mobilized people to act in the name of humanity.  Thanks to all the amazing guests of the show as well as all of YOU listening, sharing and commenting. Donate this week and help us reach more people and do more... All donors who give $50 for this milestone will receive a beautiful Humanity enamel pin as a thank you (if you provide your address).  This week, Sam Goldman interviews Susan Neiman, director of the Einstein Forum in Germany and author of Learning from the Germans: Confronting Race and the Memory of Evil and Daryle Lamont Jenkins, Executive Director of One People's Project. Sarah Posner on Trump's Acquittal; An Unpunished Coup Attempt Becomes a Training Exercise
Sam Goldman talks with journalist and author Sarah Posner (@SarahPosner) about Trump's impeachment trial. Read Sarah's recent piece, How the Christian right helped foment insurrection.  Upon acquittal, Trump said, “Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun. In the months ahead I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people. There has never been anything like it!” And as much as he lies with every breath, these statements about only just beginning will prove true if we don’t stop them.  Send your comments to samanthagoldman@refusefascism.org or @SamBGoldman. Sam Goldman talks with renowned educator and author of multiple books Henry Giroux about his recent piece on Truthout: Downplaying Trumpism is Dangerous. Sunsara Taylor Hosts Roundtable with Rosie O'Donnell, Jason Stanley and Andy Zee: "Trump & the Whole Fascist Cabal Must Go"

Is it too "inflammatory?"  Why are the fascists fighting in the streets and our side so passive?  Trump needs to be DEFEATED legally & politically. Now Is the Time to Act: No to a Fascist Coup!
On Wednesday, January 6th, we saw President Trump call forth and unleash fascist mobs to storm the U.S. Capitol. This was an attempt at a coup. It did not succeed this time, but the danger from even a failed coup is to be taken seriously, setting the stage for them to come back sooner or later to re-seize power – with or without Trump. RefuseFascism.org hosted a virtual press conference on YouTube, Thursday January 7, presenting a diverse group of people speaking out on the attempted coup, its short and longer term consequences, and what THE PEOPLE must do now. The press conference also announced protests demanding No to a Fascist Coup!

COVID: A Case Study with Life & Death Stakes: Science, Epistemology, Conspiracy & Fascism
A panel discussion presented by Refuse Fascism and The RNL – Revolution, Nothing Less! – Show, originally streamed live Wednesday, December 16. The Situation: Nearly 300,000 people in this country have died from COVID under a science-hating, genocidally racist, lunatic fascist regime, with the virus now out of control and thousands more projected to die before Trump leaves office. The Trump/Pence regime, the Republi-fascists, and their rabid base spread COVID as a matter of “liberty” – the liberty to infect and kill others. Trump recovers from COVID with the best healthcare in the world and then tells his overwhelmingly white followers at a campaign rally in Minnesota that they have “good genes.” The regime’s COVID response concentrates many of the features of this fascist program – white supremacy, xenophobia, Christian fascism, and unhinged conspiracy theories. Some Questions: How did we get to this point? Why have we tolerated a regime that has facilitated the deaths of 300,000 people, disproportionately Black and brown people? Is this deliberate mass murder or “collateral damage” in service of a fascist or fundamentalist worldview? How do we wage a society-wide struggle for truth, science, and evidence-based epistemology? Panelists: Coco Das, Editorial Board of RefuseFascism.org Dr. Phil Rice, Emergency Medicine Physician, Salem, Massachusetts Paul Street, historian and writer, author of Hollow Resistance: Obama, Trump, and the Politics of Appeasement, member of the editorial board of RefuseFascism.org Andy Zee, host of The RNL – Revolution Nothing Less – Show; co-initiator of RefuseFascism.org; spokesperson for Revolution Books. RefuseFascism.org is a movement of people coming from diverse perspectives, united in our recognition that the Trump/Pence Regime poses a catastrophic danger to humanity and the planet, and that it is our responsibility to drive them from power through non-violent protests that grow every day until our demand is met. The RNL -- Revolution, Nothing Less -- Show is a multidimensional YouTube show about making revolution and emancipating humanity. It's about the world and for a radically different world, bringing alive the need for revolution and the new communism developed by the revolutionary leader Bob Avakian. "Fight for Trump" = Fight for Fascism
Sam Goldman recaps the last few days leading into the Electoral College vote expected to confirm Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 election. Sam was with Refuse Fascism speaking out at Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington on Saturday, when Proud Boys and other fascist Trump supporters left a trail of destruction elsewhere in the city, including burning a BLM flag ripped from a historic Black church. Trump's former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn gave a speech at one of their rallies, stating, "I've been asked—on a scale of one to ten, who will be the next president of the United States, and I say Donald Trump. Ten." Why did 74 million people vote for Trump?
What is the danger and what do we do about it? A panel discussion with Michael Coard (@michaelcoard), attorney and columnist for Philly Tribune, host of WURD’s Radio Courtroom, Chrissy Stroop (@C_Stroop), writer, scholar, ex-evangelical, co-editor of Empty the Pews: Stories of Leaving the Church, Andy Zee (host of The RNL – Revolution Nothing Less – Show; co-initiator of RefuseFascism.org; spokesperson for Revolution Books), and Coco Das (@Coco_Das, editor of RefuseFascism.org). The Situation More people voted in this election than in any other election in U.S. history, but 74 million of them voted for a fascist incumbent whose regime has advanced a vicious program of white supremacy, misogyny and theocratic patriarchy, and “America First” xenophobia. 74 million people endorsed locking children in cages, throwing immigrants in concentration camps, and backing the most vicious white supremacy, including vigilante racist and anti-Semitic murderers. A political form of Christian fundamentalism makes up the most organized solid base of this fascist movement. The 74 million include millions deeply mired in a world of lies, crazy lunatic conspiracy theories and a vicious anti-science mindset that has already killed a quarter of a million people from COVID, with the pandemic now out of control. Some Questions What accounts for this? What are its roots and how deep are they? Is it an historical aberration? Will this movement fade away with Trump out of office, or be further filled with revanchist determination? Andy Zee: Fascism Is Aggressively Advancing | Sarah Posner: White Evangelicals Worshipping Trump
More and more political commentators are using the F word and talking what to do about it. Andy Zee, one of the initiators of Refuse Fascism, comments on the developing situation in the US in late July 2020. Sarah Posner, author of the new book "Unholy: Why White Evangelicals Worship at the Altar of Donald Trump" talks about the Christian Right's unwavering support for Trump.  "If NOW isn’t the time to be in the streets nonviolently demanding the immediate ouster of this regime, when IS? "Trump is not 'losing an election.' He is setting the stage to declare any outcome other than his victory illegitimate, backed up by a GOP willing to rig elections and the violence of the “police, military, and bikers for Trump” to attack and suppress any opposition to their program. Waiting for November to remove Trump is like waiting for rain when a house is on fire." - From the new Call to Act on September 5, posted on RefuseFascism.org Find a protest near you or get connected with resources to organize in your area at RefuseFascism.org.  Support the movement to drive out the Trump/Pence regime: Venmo: @Refuse-Fascism Cashapp: @RefuseFascism paypal.me/refusefascism donate.refusefascism.org Music for this episode: Penny the Snitch by Ikebe Shakedown.

Voices from the Portland Protests
In an ominous escalation of fascism, the Trump/Pence regime sent federal agents from multiple agencies to storm the streets of Portland, Oregon and crush ongoing protests. He is now deploying them to positions across the country, targeting those who dare to defy this regime and Democratic-run cities with large populations of Black people. In the United States the federal government now commands rapid deployment forces that can be sent to suppress protest or take over as “law enforcement” for any reason the regime deems necessary. They are deployed and commanded by a fascist lunatic, heading into an election. If NOW isn’t the time to be in the streets nonviolently demanding the immediate ouster of this regime, when IS? We talk to a couple of people who have been on the ground at protests in Portland almost every day over the past few months: Garrison Davis, independent journalist has been documenting the protests via Twitter @hungrybowtie and on his YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvgiWaFGDAN7INDMwR9VNOQ and activist and musician Samm Bones (find her at sammbones.com). Chantelle Herschberger & Michael Plaut: How to Defeat Police State Repression
Chantelle Herschberger and attorney Michael Plaut discuss the case of the Freeway 9 in Los Angeles - activists who blocked the highway in 2017 with a banner reading “Trump/Pence Out Now.” The case was finally dismissed this spring after two mistrials. Organizers with Refuse Fascism in LA mounted a political defense, admitting that they were in fact on the highway, but that it was necessary and protected under the first amendment due to the danger posed by this regime. Over the course of the prosecution it was discovered that the LAPD sent undercover informants to spy on protesters. This week, as Trump and acting DHS secretary Chad Wolf have sent federal forces to Portland to suppress protesters and threaten to deploy this secret police to many other cities, there are vital lessons to learn from this case and how to fight police state repression on all fronts.  LA Times: City attorney drops all charges against anti-Trump protest group that LAPD spied on  RefuseFascism.org: Victory in Case of Refuse Fascism Freeway Protesters in Los Angeles Support the movement to drive out the Trump/Pence regime: Venmo: @Refuse-Fascism Cashapp: @RefuseFascism paypal.me/refusefascism donate.refusefascism.org Music for this episode: Penny the Snitch by Ikebe Shakedown.

Jason Stanley: How Fascism Works
Protests continue against white supremacy and police murder across the country, as more people identify Trump as a fascist and demand his resignation. Today's episode is airing on Trump's birthday, which is being "celebrated" with protests outside the White House and in multiple cities around the country.  Jason Stanley (@jasonintrator), philosopher and author of "How Fascism Works," is interviewed by Coco Das (@coco_das), an editor of RefuseFascism.org. This discussion was recorded on June 3.  “By placing Trump in transnational and transhistorical perspective,  Stanley sees patterns that others miss. . . . Stanley’s comparative  perspective is particularly effective in illustrating how fascists use  fears of sexual violence. . . . By calling Trump a ‘fascist’—a word that  strikes many Americans as alien and extreme—Stanley is trying to spark  public alarm. He doesn’t want Americans to respond to Trump’s racist,  authoritarian offensives by moving their moral goal posts. The greater  danger, he suggests, isn’t hyperbole, it’s normalization. And twenty  months into Trump’s presidency, the evidence is mounting that he’s  right.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice) Support the movement to drive out the Trump/Pence regime: Venmo: @Refuse-Fascism Cashapp: @RefuseFascism paypal.me/refusefascism donate.refusefascism.org Music for this episode: Penny the Snitch by Ikebe Shakedown.

Lucian Truscott IV: "For Trump, there is only one victim: himself"
RefuseFascism.org volunteer Sam Goldman talks with Lucian Truscott IV, writer for Salon.com in an interview that was recorded via Facebook Live a couple weeks ago, during what was a very different moment, as anti-science fascists were mobilizing to demand states reopen.  THIS WEEK Call to Action: Trump has unleashed US military police against peaceful protest and threatened to call out the military nationwide. An uprising has begun. Day after day, night after night, coast to coast, the streets fill with Black youth refusing to face another day in fear and people of all backgrounds who have had enough of white supremacy and a culture of soul-crushing cruelty. Comparisons to 1968 fill some with dread and some with hope, but one thing is clear. Millions have been shaken awake. Trump has thrown down a heavy gauntlet to the people who have been heroically protesting in the face of heightened repression. Under the orders of Attorney General Bill Barr, federal forces hurled unrestrained brutality on peaceful protesters at Lafayette Park on June 1, driving them out so that Trump could rant like a police-state dictator and pose with a Bible for his Christian fascist followers. He invoked the Second Amendment to call out his armed vigilante militias, threatened to send the U.S. military into the streets to restore a fascist “law and order,” and bragged about dispatching “thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers” into D.C. Yet the people have not cowered. In the face of all the tear gas and rubber bullets, the curfews and threats of more firepower, the rulers have proven that they are not all-powerful. For the first time under this regime, the people have seized the initiative and have not let go. In contrast to the hate and bigotry of the Trump/Pence regime, these protests are infused with a love for humanity, and those in power seem more out of touch and illegitimate by the day. The splits at the top, even among conservatives, have sharpened up. A determined struggle that doesn’t yield and won’t be provoked has created a serious political crisis.
