30. Briana MacWilliam | Breaking Glass Ceilings
I first learned about my next guest a few years ago at the 2018 AATA conference in Miami. I was talking with a colleague about my plans to create this podcast and consultation business, and they asked if I had spoken with Briana MacWilliam. Nope. Had not even heard of her. My colleague highly encouraged me to look her up to see how she had been able to develop a successful online platform as an art therapist. Then another colleague asked if I had heard of her. Then my last graduate student intern told me she had Briana as a professor and said, "everything she had to say was GOLD!" With that endorsement, how I could I not check her work out! I found her Instagram page @brianamacwilliam and was blown away. I have been following her ever since. Honestly, when I reached out to invite her to be a guest I didn't expect her to respond, AND I am soooo happy that she did. Briana MacWilliam is an author, educator and licensed and board-certified creative arts therapist with more than 14 years clinical experience, helping adults with insecure attachment styles go from self-doubting to self-sovereign, and call in the “soul-shaking” passionate partnerships they want, without years of talk therapy, and no results. She has also published two textbooks on the topics of attachment and complicated grief, and working with LGBTQ populations. Currently, she maintains a small practice, but primarily offers courses online in self-help and personal development, as a love and attachment coach. She’s also the director of continuing education for Pratt institute’s creative arts therapies department. 29. Networking for Your Client | Phillip Clark
Phillip Clark is the Founder & President of ENABLE Special Needs Planning, LLC. He created ENABLE thanks to the positive influence of his younger sister, Sarah, who has Down syndrome. Phillip began his career in the financial services industry with the intention of helping families with children with Special Needs Plan for their futures. He quickly realized that the industry’s standard approach to Special Needs Planning was very different from the way his family had planned for his sister’s life. Traditional Special Needs Planning only helps families prepare for what will happen to their child when the parents are no longer around to provide for him or her. While creating a transition plan is absolutely essential, Phillip knew that the primary purpose of Special Needs Planning should be finding ways for individuals with special needs to live purposeful, impactful lives every day, based upon their own unique abilities, dreams, and goals. Phillip and I talk about his business and the 5 types of planning he and his team help facilitate and the importance of networking and collaborating with other businesses serving similar clients in different ways. If you serve clients with special needs, you are going to want to tune into this episode. 28. Light Your Brand on Fire: 8 Parts of Branding with JennyBCreative | Jenny Boyd
Back in January I hosted a Vision Board - Goal Setting workshop at my practice. That is where I met my next guest, Jenny Boyd. I can't speak for Jenny, but I know my goals have taken a wee bit of a detour since March. Jenny is an award winning brand and graphic designer. With a background in director level leadership in brand management and art direction, she has been recognized in the areas of product innovation, as well as brand and editorial design. She enjoys making things come to life with her designs. Bringing a positive energy and an understanding that true art is in the details, Jenny takes great pride in her work and continues to strive to bring all of her projects the dedication they deserve. She is the founder of JennyBCreative, a graphic design and branding firm located in Cape Coral, Florida. And she is the co-host of "Deep Thoughts on Marketing" on Youtube, where she and her co-host Mary-Anne Cipressy share educational tips about marketing. In this episode, Jenny shares about the 8 Parts of Branding. Who knew there were 8 parts? I didn't! She also shares other valuable tips about marketing your business. 27. Industry-Expert Tips on Using SEO to make your website STAND OUT!
Episode 27 is all about Marketing! Our next guest, Joel Connor, shares Industry-Expert Tips on Using SEO to make your website STAND OUT! Joel Conner is the founder and director of Blue Swing Media & Epiq Video where he and his team use their digital marketing skills to help small businesses get seen on the web. When Joel started out as a web designer almost a decade ago, he used simple content marketing to rank his services on google. This included writing an occasional blog post, sharing a few things on Facebook, and listing his business with local directories. Over the years his web design firm grew and became more of a typical “we do everything under the sun” digital marketing agency. This came about because their client’s pretty websites on a brand-new domain were often lost in the vast ocean of the world wide web. They began helping their clients grow their web presence without charging the astronomical fees that other agencies would quote them for “SEO.” Paying a thousand dollars a month for content marketing makes perfect sense if you have a product or service that may bring in several thousand dollars a month per new client/sale, but not if your product is $10-$50 and you’re not currently being found online. So, after learning and testing PPC, Social Media Marketing, SEO, Backlink building, blogging, Video marketing and just about every other element of the digital marketing footprint, he found that “Content Marketing,” was by far one of the best investments for business when done properly. Since then he and his team have been dialing in best practices for how to best leverage content creation for their clients as well as their own projects. They are also expanding into professional video production with their newly launched Epiq Video brand. If you are anything like me, I knew nothing when it came to marketing when I first started. Really! I didn't even give myself credit for the work I was doing to market my business, because I didn't know it was marketing. I've learned a lot since then. The tips that Joel shares in this episode are incredibly valuable for those who know very little about websites and search engine optimization (SEO). 25. Take Control of Business Finances | David Axler
Does the word Accounting, send you running? Not to fear, my next guest shares how easy it is to take control of your business accounting needs using Wave. David Axler, is the VP of Strategy and Business Development at Wave Accounting. He is passionate about helping small business owners take control of their finances with improved efficiency. In today's episode he shares 3 things business owners need to know about accounting as it relates to operating profitably. He also shares what to look for in an accounting platform.                                                        Wave is a free intuitively designed accounting platform. Prior to upgrading to an electronic health record, I used Wave exclusively to operate my practice. I had tried a competitors product, which I spent a lot of money on, and felt defeated every time I used it. Like, to-the-point-of-tears defeated. Thinking-there-was-something-wrong-with-ME defeated! Then another art therapist introduced me to Wave. She raved about it! I immediately signed up and began using their product. It literally SAVED me HOURS and HOURS of time and frustration. I was no longer crying after reconciling my billing each week. Did I mention that it is FREE!  Yes, they have some paid for services integrated if you need, but all the basic stuff is absolutely free and designed for small business. You can even add your company branding which makes sending invoices polished and professional.  Resources Mentioned on the Show:  David Axler's Twitter @realax   Wave www.waveapps.com  Twitter @wavehq Intstagram @wavehq #therapistentrepreneur #accounting #businessfinances #creativeartstherapypractice #privatepracticetips

SS6. Social Connection | Special Series on Trauma Response with Nicole Porter Davis
The current pandemic is creating a global scale traumatic event peppered with myriad micro traumas. It is impacting everyone in varying degrees. For those able to manage and integrate their emotional experiences, they may come out on the other end without any negative psychological effects from the experience. While others may surface experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. This may be especially true in areas of the country and world experiencing the highest number of illnesses and within the community of medical professionals on the front lines caring for them. Given the circumstances, Nicole Porter Davis and I thought it may be helpful to create this series on large scale trauma response. Today we talk about the role of Social Connection, for both client and therapist. We also discuss the role it plays in personal and professional emergency preparedness. In response to the current Global situation impacting all of us right now, I made the decision to press pause on the typical interviews that had been airing to this point and focus on creating content that might be of service to the community right now. Over the next few weeks I will be sharing individual recorded episodes on topics that may be at the top of mind for many. Today, I share with you ways that I have been having to pivot in my practice and share some ways I have been managing my responses to the current crisis so that I can continue to show up as best I can for my clients and colleagues. Also, if you are interested in signing up for a tele-therapy service, we have a blog post about what you will need to consider. If you are considering tele-health, check out doxy.me here. It offers a basic free, or upgraded paid, HIPAA complaint platform for video conferencing. I have been using it in my personal practice successfully for 5 years. My clients and I both find it super easy to use. Thanks for your support! RESOURCES: Sign up for our Therapy Support Group on our HOME page!

12. Tele-Art Therapy, Art Kits, and Beyond
It is a delight to introduce my next guest, art therapist Deanna Barton. She is the owner of Artspiration, LLC. She speaks candidly about offering online art therapy services and includes how she has made tele-art therapy work for her without shying away from the nitty-gritty about what strategies benefit her business as well as her clients. She is also very forthcoming about what hasn't worked and using that information to guide a pivot in her business. She details how she arrived at the decision to discontinue a product she invested time and money in as well as her plans for future products. There is so much to learn from her experience that can be applied to our current global social climate. Also, if you are interested in signing up for a tele-therapy service, we have a blog post about what you will need to consider. If you are considering tele-health, check out doxy.me here. 11. How to Create the Support of a Group Practice While Being a Solo-Practitioner
I'm excited to welcome my next guest Amie Thomas to the show. She and I crossed paths early on in both of our careers. I took a position she had previously been in, but it wasn't until 2019 that we met. And we did so through blind email Networking. What?! Yes. An email sent to a colleague to learn more about them, their practice and ideal clients. It resulted in a coffee date between myself, Amie, and another colleague. It was there we realized our paths had been intertwined. I'm excited for her to share how she's been building her individual practice alongside her colleagues as they build theirs. She details how she navigates having all the collegiate benefits of a group but also with the autonomy of a solo practice. RESOURCES: https://aimcounselinggroup.com/

10. Building an Expressive Arts Based Retreat and Workshop Focused Practice
I had been stalking my next guest on Instagram for a while before I ended up meeting her at a 3 day intensive Mandala training, created and taught by Carol Thayer Cox & Amy Bucciarelli that I had the great privilege of hosting at my practice in 2019. I was so excited when I realized that she was in my office space because I was watching what she created through her social media marketing. Ella Dufrene is an art therapist with a passion for integrating nature with her art therapy practice. She has created her practice offering expressive arts based retreat programs around the world. Although she is located in Miami, her retreats have been offered in Colorado, Georgia, Columbia, and Costa Rica. 9. Building a Following Based on a Specialized Course
I have to be completely transparent here. I invited my next guests to the show because they are going to be teaching the 20 hour Mastering the Meaning of Mandalas Course at my practice April 17-19 2020. I took the course last year and was blown away by how much I learned and how it changed the lens in which I view the world including client artwork. Carol Thayer Cox is a retired board-certified art therapist, educator, and writer. She is former faculty of the graduate art therapy program at George Washington University, was the assistant director there for 10 years, and has taught at Vermont College of Norwich University and Pratt Institute of Art & Design. She is the author and editor of many works. (See resources below for links to several books available on Amazon.) She seeks to understand how communication, whether through art, dance, music, or words can offer healing. Amy Bucciarelli is a board certified art therapist and Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor. She and Carol have been co-teaching the course on Mandalas together for several years, after being trained and supervised by Carol. Amy has used mandalas in her personal self-exploration and as an effective tool with a variety of patients including those experiencing various types of addictive behaviors, psychiatric illness, and in medical facilities. She is currently on the faculty of the University of Florida's Center for the Arts in Medicine https://arts.ufl.edu/academics/center-for-arts-in-medicine/ where she teaches courses about arts in health, creative theory, compassion, design thinking, and innovation. She also runs Art & Acupuncture workshops and Therapeutic Hand Paper-making workshops. She holds the belief that creativity is a lifestyle that promotes personal balance and well-being.
