Is induction of labour always necessary?

Is induction of labour always necessary?

In this episode, we cover the topic of induction as requested by a listener on our Relax Into Birth PLUS mom's whatsapp group.

"Dear Charlene and Karen. I am 39 weeks tomorrow and this morning at my routine checkup, my doctor recommended that I come in for an induction of labor on Thursday. Part of me is like 'hell yes, let's get this baby out pleazzzze', but there is another part that is wondering whether my baby needs a few more days inside? Is he ready? And actually - am I? I have definitely noticed that I am getting more frequent Braxton Hicks and I am feeling a lot of heaviness in my pelvis, but besides that, not much at all. If I go in on Thursday, I could be home by the weekend with my precious baby boy? Should I go for it? Looking forward to your thoughts on induction. Thanks, Anon"

Is induction of labour always necessary, or is it (sadly) sometimes scheduled out of convenience, fear, impatience or discomfort? Listen in for the ins and outs of this topic, as well as learn about some natural forms of induction that can get the bun in the oven keener to come earth side. If you are keen to join our whatsapp group of preggie mamas, please slide into our DMs and let us know. Also, look out for our Relax Into Birth PLUS online antenatal course, covering extensive Hypnobirthing techniques, as well as the physiological side of labour and birth. See you there!

Talk to me about episiotomy & tearing!

Talk to me about episiotomy & tearing!

In this episode, because we love it - we talk about a natural footling breech twin birth, weekends away in the mountains to recharge and last but not least, we answer a mom's question about tearing and episiotomies. We cover the full spectrum from what an episiotomy is, when is it necessary to perform one, when tearing is better than an episiotomy, how to avoid one and how to heal up the perineum after birth. Filled with expert tips and advice, we aim to remove your fear from this topic and help you understand what you need to know before you birth your baby!

You can thank me later! Here's a quick guide and recipes to help heal the perineum for the Postpartum Mama.

💜Spray bottle for the loo:

Mix:

-100mls Witchazel

-4-5 tablespoons of sea salt or Epsom salts

-1-2 drops or high quality lavender or tea tree essential oil

Spray the area every time you go to the bathroom - to assist the healing process.

💜Padsicles

A pdsicle is a frozen pad, made for nicks, tears or episiotomy. It is so soothing can help with bruising of the area. It is also helpful for post caesarean birth to place over the dressing.

What you will need:

-A spray/squeezie bottle

-1 cup Raspberry tea

-¼ cup of hammelis (witch hazel)

-3 drops Lavender Essential Oil

-3 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

-A tube of single ingredient aloe vera gel / hammelis gel

-1 to 2 packs of 12 absorbent maternity pads

-A butter knife that you have sterilised in boiling water

Method:

1. Make the tea and pour it into your spray/squeezie bottle once cooled.

2. Add the drops of essential oil to the bottle.

3. Lay your pads out, face up on a table on top of a clean towel / linen saver.

4. Spray the solution of tea, witch hazel and oils onto the pads quite thoroughly.

5. Squirt a little of the gel onto the tea-soaked pads and then spread like butter onto each pad.

6. Fold pads in half and place into a clean freezer bag / lunchbox and freeze.

7. Use as desired.

Do not use one pad for an extended period of time. Change as needed.

💜Sushi Noori aka Seaweed: This is an amazing natural product too. Get a pack of sushi noori and

use the sheets individually.

Take one sheet, fold it in half, wet it under water and place on top of

a dry pad. This has immense healing capacity.

💜Soak in a sidz bath of salt or Epsom salts daily until all healed up.

What if I want an epidural?

What if I want an epidural?

Every week Doula Charlene and Midwife Karen come together to bring you this podcast as an offshoot of the Relax Into Birth PLUS course they created for pregnant and expectant couples. Relax Into Birth PLUS is a comprehensive, online antenatal course, focusing on labour, birth and beyond, featuring extensive hypnobirthing techniques as well as covering the medical aspects of the birthing process.

We always have so much to share and so this podcast was born - and here we share birth stories, birthing world updates, interview birth workers from near and far, and also, we take the time to answer your burning questions around pregnancy, birth and motherhood.

In this episode, Karen and Charlene answer a subscriber's letter about pain relief and help her differentiate between natural forms of pain relief, as well as medical options available at a hospital birth.

Dear karen and Charlene,
I have just finished Relax Into Birth PLUS - and I loved it by the way, but I have a few questions about pain relief. I have been thinking about about how labour will be - and if i will cope. I have heard that epidurals are amazing for pain relief - but have also heard that they can have an adverse effect on the baby. Is this true? What options do i have for pain relief - and should i opt for an epidural? From the course I learnt about having a doula present to help with natural forms of pain relief. How do they compare to the big guns of epidural and pethedine? What other options do I have? I think i have a high pain threshhold, but my husband thinks I will be begging for an epidural from the get go. I am hoping to prove him wrong - but I also have no idea what to expect. Thanks for your help - and for the course, I learnt so much!

Freebie: Hypnobirthing Breathing Audio

Freebie: Hypnobirthing Breathing Audio

Breath is your best and most accessible tool when it comes to mental preparation and relaxation for birth. Your breath is powerful and can get you out of a fear state (the sympathetic mode) into your birthing state (parasympathetic mode), which can make your labour feel instantaneously more manageable. You want to sink into your limbic centre, where the mind lets go and your body goes into a state of allowing your baby to come down and out. Breath helps to move you from survival mode into birthing mode, gently and effectively. These tracks have been created for your convenience and can be played in pregnancy, during birth and even as a calming visualisation after birth. They are included in the Relax Into Birth Hypnobirthing Online course of prerecorded packaged video, audio and e-book content.

Relax into Birth is the first proudly South African Online Birth Preparation School, of international standard, teaching women and their partners Hypnobirthing techniques and deep relaxation methods for a more comfortable and manageable birth experience at home or at hospital, for natural or caeasarean births.

Episode 8: Nicky and Peter's Birth Story

Episode 8: Nicky and Peter's Birth Story

Listen to Nicky tell her birth story of how she pivoted with the news that she had to have an emergency caesarean - and how Relax Into Birth had given her the tools for an easier transition to a new plan... "I’m Nicky and this is our first baby - Josephine Olivia. My husband, a doctor was hoping for a girl so he was ecstatic when she came out. Our delivery didn’t go as we had initially hoped and prepared for. I was so so looking forward to a vaginal birth (I was so excited!). I laboured for 7 hours at home and then they found meconium in my waters at the hospital so Josie was delivered by emergency Caesar. I do not like any kind of medical things - injections, giving blood, COVID tests - so I usually faint when I have to do those things, but Josie’s birth was incredibly peaceful and calm despite all the busyness that comes with an emergency caesar. I am so grateful that I was able to train my body to function out of my parasympathetic nervous system and really be so present and relaxed during my birth. Learning so much every day and we’re loving being parents."

Episode 5: Tertia & Mike's Birth Story

Episode 5: Tertia & Mike's Birth Story

Tertia and Mike share their home birth story of Siena, their second daughter. Their first daughter India was born in hospital. "Shortly after Susan’s arrival my waters broke on the kitchen floor - I said ‘oh shit’ & started crying again (I was not in a Zen mental space). The pool was taking forever to get ready. I waddled from the kitchen to the birth pool which was only about 5 steps. Another big push came just outside the pool. I really thought I wasn’t going to make it into the water! By the time I got in, I was very off my center, breathing like a crazy person, petrified that she was just going to shoot out and tear me from top to bottom, and while I was heaving and ho-ing I felt Susan putting her hand on my arm and saying with this beautiful smiling face in this serenely calm voice, “Tertia, this is your birth.... you are in control... slow down your breathing... put your hand between your legs and feel your baby’s head... can you feel her? ...you are in control of when she comes out”. It was like a switch went off in me. The Relax into Birth affirmations and tracks I did in the lead up to my birth, day after day, just kicked in. I became so calm and totally used my breath to control the speed at which my baby came through the birth canal. Within the next minute, my baby just popped out; no tearing. The most wonderful moment was to catch her myself and bring her to my chest. India was born into a frenetic, hospital environment where, even though it was a text book natural birth, it seemed to have the emotional current of a medical emergency. My gynae/obstetrician was shouting at me to push, the nurse was shouting in my ear to push whilst pushing down on my stomach, my poor husband was completely traumatised because he was under the impression something must be going wrong or will go wrong because everyone seemed to be in a panic. I remember shouting and screaming during delivery and needing to push and push and push – the birthing environment was not mine. Siena’s birth on the other hand was such a happy event, my husband, mom, doula and midwife were there to support and be with me. I was in the comfort of my own home, feeling loved, safe, hearing people chat to each other in a happy way, excited about meeting Siena, and me in charge of my birth in a way that I never thought would be possible. The birth was mine. I am so grateful to Charlene, Gayle, Susan and the Birth Options team. The Relax into Birth course and these amazing women held me throughout my birthing experience. We all have the snake charming ability in us, it just needs to be awakened. The mental preparation through the course, combined with these ladies’ belief in my ability & their absolute faith in the woman’s ability to birth in an empowering way is what made this experience such a healing one for me. It is such a gift. I am eternally grateful." Watch them tell their story in this episode...

Episode 4: Pip and Josh's Birth Story

Episode 4: Pip and Josh's Birth Story

Pip and Josh share their New Zealand birth story and Pip shares how she overcame her extreme anxiety so that she could birth without fear - and birth without fear she did! "You couldn't have come at a better time for me as the anxiety was getting the better of me as time progressed. I remember around 26 weeks in tears at my midwife appointment feeling completely overwhelmed and not knowing what to expect. I spoke to my dear friend Felicity Meek who put me in touch with you. As soon as I started listening to your affirmations and then doing your course from around 33 weeks my mind set started to change and I began to relax! Your course allowed me to understand the process but in a way that wasn't scary but beautiful, something to look forward and that my body was going to do it. I had no idea how powerful hypnobirthing could be, but it was the best thing I could have done to prepare myself. I can not thank you enough Charlene - you are incredible and what an amazing birthing experience you and your course have given me." Listen to her story in this episode...

Episode 3: Frances and Chris's Birth Story

Episode 3: Frances and Chris's Birth Story

Dr Frances Straeuli and her husband, Dr Chris Straeuli share their birth story and the tools that helped them on their journey to meeting their baby girl Sienna Ruth. "It was a Saturday morning around 9.30 and I had just finished having some breakfast. As I got up to start my day I felt a small gush of water. Naturally, as every mom who's ever had their waters break I thought to myself "this is it. I've now reached the part of pregnancy where I am incontinent" a few moments after that on my way to the loo, a bigger gush! That's when I realised (initially feeling relieved that I hadn't peed my pants,  which was quickly taken over by fear) what was actually happening. I had ruptured membranes too early! I was only 34 weeks pregnant." Keep listening for the rest of their birth story :-)

Episode 2: Tracy and Ryan's Birth Story

Dr Tracy Flowers (of Médecins Sans Frontières) shares her birth story. Here's an excerpt... ""As a doctor, I always imagined I would want a caesar, but then I fell pregnant and everything changed. There's no doubt that the Relax Into Birth course and the preparation really made it such a wonderful event for us. We went into the birth feeling confident, calm and peaceful despite doing all this through Covid-19. Relax Into Birth helped me to normalise birth through daily listening to the hypnobirthing tracks. When I was in labour, I used the tools I had learnt about breathing, relaxation and visualisation, which all helped me keep calm. The surges felt so manageable and the techniques helped us both so much."

Episode 1: Caitlyn and Corbin's Birth Story

Episode 1: Caitlyn and Corbin's Birth Story

Caitlyn shares her birth story. Here's an excerpt... "My birth experience felt primal and it was fast. I could hear Charlene's voice through Corbin, as he kept reminding me of my breath and speaking to me telling me I could let go. I progressed very quickly, which is unusual for a first time and I truly believe it’s because of the Relax Into Birth Hypobirthing course. I guess when the baby’s ready he’s ready, but there was this tiny bubble around me and Corbs - and it was spectacular. I’d have loved the warm bath or the dim lights of the birth room, but I wouldn’t change a single thing, not for all the world. It was perfect and I’d do it all over again."
