Episode 111: Is the Truth Really the Truth, Or is it just A Perspective
SHOW NOTES: In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Is the Truth Really the Truth, Or is it just A Perspective. How do we come to our truth? How do we come to our view? We come to our view by the filters that we've acquired over time, over the years in our lives, these filters of our upbringing, these filters of our past experience, these filters of our environment and where we live of the people that we hang around. All of the things that have filtered our experience creates what we know to be our truth. Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Episode 110: Where Are You Doubling Down to Be Right
SHOW NOTES: In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about where we are doubling down to be right. What do I mean when I say doubling down to be right? Well, you know, sometimes we can be speaking or acting or going about our lives in a particular way. And we know it's the wrong path. We know that maybe what we're saying is not accurate or not the right thing to say or harmful. And in certain cases we will double down just to be right. Even when the evidence points in the opposite direction, even when we know that the thing that we're doing is not useful. This is something that is ingrained in our culture and it has a personal impact as well. Because we do inherit conversations, we inherit that being right is right and being wrong is very wrong. All these things are happening subconsciously, but the goal is to bring the unconscious to conscious so that you can interrupt the old patterns. Episode 109: When we Focus on the Doing, we miss the Being
SHOW NOTES: In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about how when we focus on the doing, we miss the being. We tend most of the times to focus on the projects and overlook who we are becoming. Things that are important to us begin to change. We need to be listening to that - when the environment is pulling into something different we lose sight of our values, sometimes, it's not about making a change but reconnecting to the value itself. Episode 105: If You Want to Know How to Motivate Someone... Get their Values
SHOW NOTES: In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about the how, if you want to know how to motivate someone first get and understand their values. What truly motivates us are our deeper level values and beliefs. When one is motivated by staying away from a discomfort, once the discomfort is off they tend to relax, whereas those who are motivated towards a certain goal tend to have another goal once the previous one is accomplished. Sometimes our beliefs and values tend to change depending on situations. You can't stay in a place where your values are violated, where values are misaligned there's definitely going to be a problem. Aligning values moves from forming, to storming, to norming, to performing. It's important to listen deeply to understand people's core values. Despite what most people realize, it’s our deep unconscious values that control us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 7 minutes! Follow and Share these pearls with others. Episode 104: The Difference Between The Goals You Achieve and The Ones You Don't
SHOW NOTES: In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about the difference between the goals you achieve and the ones you don't. In the process of setting goals you need to have the GRIT of taking the action and be willing to receive negative or no response at all. Sometimes when we set goals we tend to be attached on how the goal needs to happen. The process: - Have the goal to be very clear[The conscious mind is the goal setter and the unconscious mind is the goal getter] - S.M.A.R.T goal - State your goal in the now - Visualize and feel how it would feel like it has already happened - Drop the goal in a calendar in the specific date in the future and allow it to go. Listen in as I share my journey to my TEDx talk and the process I used to achieve this particular goal. Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? When we become aware of something we don't know, we become uncomfortable but we ought to see this as an opportunity to learn. We are so obsessed with being perfect and getting it right, which isn't the right way to go but we need to be fine with making mistakes in order to learn and become unconscious competent. Episode 100: Re-examining Our Thought Habits For Flaws
SHOW NOTES: It is episode 100!!! Thank you so much to all our listeners for always supporting us since the first day. In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Re-examining our thought habits for flaws. When you find that there is resistance letting go of a negative thought habit you should ask yourself what you are benefiting from holding on to the resistance.  Deconstructing the negative belief: - Breakdown the components of why you have the belief in the first place. - You can disapprove the theory of the negative belief by finding a time when you were able to do almost a similar thing to that particular belief or situation.  - How were you feeling when you did, that which you think you can't do. - Who do you know that has that skill? Who could you learn from that skill? Always question your life to see how you can create infinite possibilities. Episode 99: Justice Equity Diversity Inclusion W/ Dawnn Clisby
SHOW NOTES: This week Dawnn Monique Clisby and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about the role that emotional intelligence and communication intelligence plays in diversity equity inclusion. Highlights from the conversation: [00:15] Dawnn M. Clisby - Director of Staffing & Business Development at EARN Staffing Solutions - Entrepreneur Nique's Niche [01:48] Earn Staffing Solutions Earn staffing solutions is an African American HR solutions, staffing and diversity equity and inclusive firm that is new to Pittsburgh with over 75 years of experience with human resources, diversity and C-level clients and candidates providing the highest quality of service and being a bridge between diverse candidates and corporate America. There are 4 major parts being offered: - Staffing services; Corporate temp to hire and ; Direct hire - Diversity solutions; Delivering quality candidates & ; Diverse candidates for every position [09:00] Communication as a learning tool The only way people are gonna learn is if they're communicating since there's only so much training you can do before you have to get out there and do practical application. People will mess up and make mistakes but that's part of learning. Living is learning and learning is making mistakes. And the wonderful thing about messing up is that you can clean it up. But you can't ever learn if you're not willing to stick your neck out there. [16:10] Onboarding Pieces It's enough to come into a new leadership position and to have to onboard to all of that the organization is accustomed to and learning all of the systems and the dynamics of the organization without having to deal with the additional strain or having to think about how you are gonna be received. This decreases the risk of the new leader burning out and leaving. Conclusion Overall, it’s important for the whole organization to give support to the new talent for a successful onboarding. It’s not enough to identify and hire diverse talent, organizations need to be committed to support and have coaching programs that will help retain the new talents as well. SHOW NOTES: In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Creating reframes to empower you. Reframing is basically loosening the grip of unhealthy belief pattern and giving a new perspective on the view, giving someone another view. Reframing is used to change thinking in the unconscious level. Types of Reframes I'd like to share: - Context Reframe; It's when someone says something and you change the context in probably a positive way. - Content Reframe; It's changing the meaning of a situation Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. Episode 95: The Well Meaning Way We Box Ourselves In
SHOW NOTES: In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about The Well Meaning Way We Box Ourselves In. Frameworks give structure however frameworks can box you in and limit your expression.  The people in the system with the most flexibility control the system this is true since they tend to distinguish person to person, system to system and they tend not to leave gaps in transforming other people's lives.  Most coaching programs tend to follow specific framework but they never teach the skill underneath the framework, this doesn't give people the flexibility.  What's important is going beneath the structure to get the components on what makes the framework works. Despite what most people realize, behavioral flexibility is important to get the best transformation. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 16 minutes! To Dr. Dickson’s family, education was everything but only few people are in the medical field. So, it was up to Dr. Dickson to figure out how he would go about organic chemistry. In short, he has always lived with “there’s got to be a way, I just do not know what it is yet”. This ended up in him partnering with his mentor to start Ascension Medical Doctors. [34:29] Who does Ascension Medical Educators help? Medical students are in battle and they see their comrades slowly lose the battle. And so sometimes, “C = MD” becomes a coping mechanism to keep up with all the challenges. Episode 90: Year End Assessment Part 2 (Putting Goals For 2022)
On the last episode of the year we talk about the year end assessment part 2. I take you through my personal process and what I take my clients through in inserting goals for the future so that you too can integrate the process in your life. Seeing the bigger picture is the basis of empowerment to be beyond what you've already done. How do you make your goals come to you:  - Take action towards your goal: Have a structure(Have a internal representation)      : Your goal must be S.M.A.R.T( Specific, Measurable, Achievable/Actionable, Responsible/Realistic, Timely/Toward)      : Your goal should be stated in the present. - Evidence procedure(The last step to show that you've achieved your goal) - Feel how it would feel once you've already achieved the goal - Float up above yourself from the now to the future, imagining giving life and energy to the timeline - Drop the image on the timeline and see it fit in like a puzzle. Episode 88: The Courage To Take The Less Traveled Road w/ Precious Price (Best Of 2021)
SHOW NOTES: This week on Best Of 2021 Series, Precious Price and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about starting young, and identifying our purpose and passion. Precious shares with her her journey to building a new career inside something she is passionate about and the mindset it takes to do this even early in her career. Highlights from the conversation: [00:58] Precious Price · 25 year-old Speaker and motivator · Digital Marketing Coach and Brand Strategist · Author of The #AirbnbMoney E-Book [04:43] Identifying our purpose and passion How we expect our passion to be integrated in our career life? This question lit the true fire of the entrepreneurial spirit for Precious. She has since been doing personal and professional brand coaching, turned the value she brings, and monetize them. Most people may not be thinking about these things in their early twenties. [11:03] Pivoting out of career In life, there are things we want to accomplish, hence the desire to obtain a specific career. However, at some point, we grow and expand and in doing so, our priorities change and shifted. It is important to give ourselves grace when we are expanding and know that stepping into the unknown and pivoting out of career is fine. Let us give ourselves permission to outgrow what we thought our lives were supposed to look like, even if our lives look good. [14:48] Knowing it was going to happen Sometimes, we do not need to know how things are going to happen. Knowing it is going to happen is sometimes enough. Many people are so caught up to know the ending of the story and all the components (the how). Sometimes, all we need to do is to keep trying things out to pivot – one foot in front of the other. Episode 86: Finding Your Specific Voice & Gift To The World w/ Beverley Barnes
SHOW NOTES: This week, Beverley Barnes and sat down again to take the conversation to another level as we talk about why we are not meant to be invisible and finding our voice. Learn why it is important that we acknowledge our uniqueness and not allow the world to dictate us as well as the importance of starting to feel. Highlights from the conversation:  [00:15] Beverley Barnes · Jamaican descent, born and grew up in England ‘til 7 & moved to Canada · Founder, Coach Instructor and Mentor at Soul's Calling® Academy · Master Life Coach Instructor at Martha Beck, Inc. [05:05] Stop the denial Stop pretending that somebody’s going to help figure things out, stop pretending we are just going to fit. Stop denying ourselves and acting like we do not matter. Denial is not even knowing that we are lying. [08:28] Dare to decide Outside, everything may look the same but inside, we know we are preparing and are ready for the change. That is what happens when we dare to decide. And we then start to be able to focus on what we are looking at. Decisions sometimes do not mean tomorrow; we are going to make the change. Sometimes, it just means we taking the steps. [10:32] Out your truth We have been programmed by culture, our family, our ancestors, and many other factors. Some of these may not be true for you now already. There may be programming that just do not fit us. If we are focused on our programming, we may not be able to find our genius. Outing our truth with respect to our body system – connecting to our inner knowing and trusting the gut and the small experiments that can build our trust for ourselves. [24:18] Keep taking actions We cannot just plan things in our head. Directing our love towards oneself – if it does not look the way we plan for it to be, we should not be too hard on ourselves. The entire thing is an evolving process and so we have to direct it inward to be gentle with ourselves while taking firm and relevant actions. Episode 85: Where You Put Your Focus Matters: Be Careful With Your Words
SHOW NOTES: In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about where we put our focus since it determines our mental conversation. It's either we are focusing on what we are running from or where we want to be. The brain linguistically doesn't recognize the negative, when you are saying what you don't want, the brain doesn't recognize the "don't" so you are left with more of what you don't want. Episode 84: Code Fluidity: Being Our Fully Expressed Selves w/ Dr. Ijeoma Opara
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Ijeoma Opara and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about code fluidity. Let’s have a meaningful conversation on how people of African descent have developed and retain the ability to be flexible in our behavior and how we can use that to empower our full expression. Highlights from the conversation:  [00:40] Dr. Ijeoma Opara · Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Physician and Associate Program Director at Wayne State University School of Medicine · Systems transformation for anti-racism, justice, equity and decolonization activist and advocate · Helps embody joy, abundance and freedom and fight for justice so the black community can live and thrive freely and prosper. [01:30] The Code Fluidity Code fluidity created by Drs. Opara and Clairborne is created to adapt the term “code switching”. Code switching is being one part of yourself in one circumstance and then switching and being another part of yourself in another. There is a sense of being locked-in toward being fluid and being able to be oneself all the time. We use code switching as a tool of survival – an outcome of having living in an oppressive system or violent society. To some, code switching is also a trauma response. [04:43] The True Liberation We are constantly shifting in identities which was driven by our will to survive. But what does joy and abundance actually look like? It is being able to show up in our full selves in whatever space we are without fear of harm or retaliation in some way, form or fashion. This is what true liberation means. If one looks at it in a spectrum like that, then it is almost like code fluidity is the next step from code switching which is like us choosing what we should show in the “facade” and what should be in the “background”. [09:39] Beginning the Journey How do we begin the journey for ourselves inside of a system that is not quite there yet? Getting to know who we truly are is definitely a good starting point for us! Getting to know ourselves, being comfortable of our own skin and beginning to explore all of our belief patterns, our traumas and where they come from. It needs to start from rejecting the myth of imposter syndrome as opposed to what the system is telling us that we do not belong. Conclusion: Overall, it is important for us to understand that people sometimes use code switching to keep themselves protected from an oppressive, violent system or a result of a traumatic experience they have in the past. One thing worth noting here is that there is hope – there is hope for true liberation, joy, and abundance. And it may not be easy at first but accepting who we truly are is a great first step to the process. Catch up with Dr. Ijeoma Opara by contacting her at ijeomannodimopara@gmail.com. Episode 82: The Building Of Sustainable Habits w/ Dr. Serene Shereef
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Serene Shereef and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about mindfulness, productivity systems and habit building. Let’s have a meaningful conversation about taking the steps on being who we envisioned ourselves to be. Highlights from the conversation: [00:55] Dr. Serene Shereef · Mom to 3 wonderful children · A wife and a life coach · Surgeon and medical educator · Owner of Serenity Wellness MD · Host of the Mindfulness and Productivity Systems Podcast [03:50] Perfection in Imperfections With social media and television portrayals, we are told we have to be the perfect mom, wife, husband, children, or business owner. But the perfection is being with and living with the imperfections of our lives. Finding joy in just being “us” is important not only for us and our mental health but also for those around us. Taking away the pressure of “we gotta do what someone else is doing.” [07:24] The Making of a Habit Habits are a way to take our daily mental fatigue having to make decisions about everything. Researchers at duke university found that at least 40% of what we do on a daily basis are habits and a lot of them are built unconsciously. When people start saying “we have to build a habit”, they likely mean, “these are the steps, I have a tracker, let’s build it”. More often than not, even if they build it, it is going to be hard to sustain because they have not done all of the ground work. Laying the ground work is essential for the sustainability of it and making the habit long-lasting. [09:02] Knowing the “what” and “why” The way to making a habit should be, first, understanding what is it that we truly want and why do we want it. Really digging deep to our core beliefs. For instance, if we want to be a healthy person, we first need to build an identity around being healthy. That may not mean we are that person who runs 3 miles a day, it means that when there are choices in front of us, we have a habit of making choices that are good for us. This is completely different from just saying, “my habit is doing this and that”, it is looking at the identity that we want to build. Once we have that, we can then start building a habit around it to make it fun, accessible and thoughtless. [19:23] Building the keystone habits Keystone habits are little modifications we add into our routines that accidentally spread to other elements of their lives. Knowing what would make the biggest impact in our lives is imperative in making these keystone habits. Again, connecting back to ourselves, connecting back to what is important to us, what is our identity. It is really connecting back to core beliefs and what we envision we are going to build as an identity over the next year. And then, we look at the things that will make a big difference to these goals. Conclusion: One of the sure-fire ways to build a habit is to build a habit that falls outside our core values. When there is no behavior and flexibility, we begin to feel trapped outside the habit. In building a habit, know that we grow into it, there are a lot of changes that comes along with it. Whatever the goal we may have, we are off to a good start when we understand our core values and build our keystone habits. Episode 80: Raising Our Kids To Be Resilient In This World w/ Rachelle Carrie
SHOW NOTES: This week, Rachelle Carríe and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about raising our kids to be resilient. Let’s talk about motherhood and the tools we are using to empower our kids, not only for their emotional and communication intelligence. Highlights from the conversation: [00:53] Rachelle Carríe · DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Advocate · Worship Facilitator, Host and Keynote Speaker [05:13] How our children help us learn and grow Our biggest teacher where we can grow most can be inside our relationship with our children. Being able to recognize our trauma responses and learning how to navigate our emotions as a model for them. In the older generation of our parents, there is likely no apology when the parents lash out. As parents, it is important to clean up any mess we make on our kids as quickly as possible. This can mean apologizing even at the moment but this is effective modeling. [20:25] The importance of giving ourselves and our kids grace Our kids are so intuitive – they think we are mad at them if they see we are mad. This is an opportunity for us to assure them that it’s something else we are mad at and not them. In doing so, our kids are at ease – gives them the space to offer a hug or ask us what can make us feel better. It is never going to be perfect and unfortunately, there are a lot of parents shaming other parents for it. We should allow ourselves to be “human parents” who clean up our mess. [22:36] Allowing ourselves and our kids to “mess up” As parents, the mentality of not allowing ourselves to mess up resonates greatly with our kids. And so, our kids believe that they cannot mess up. It’s important to let our children know it is okay to make mistakes, we learn from them. It is okay to fail – because we learn from our failures – it's feedback. Our kids may think we know everything and so telling them we don’t and that we keep growing gives them space to not be perfect. Conclusion: Overall, it is important for us to be doing the work and to be outwardly doing it. We can go to workshops and read books but the outward work is modeling. It is essential to give ourselves grace as parents – in doing so, we are teaching our kids a lot. Catch up with Rachelle Carríe by contacting her via email at rachelle@rachellecarrie.com. Episode 78: Our Money Beliefs Affect Our Earning Potential w/Amina LeGrand
SHOW NOTES: This week, Amina LeGrand and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about how we view ourselves in relationship to money. Let’s learn how we can identify our natural strengths and blind spots to better understand who we are and embrace our value. Highlights from the conversation: [00:43] Amina · Empowerment Coach · DISC-certified [01:35] Money talks: what were modeled to us It is important to have a positive mindset when it comes to money because we can block our abundance if we do not know how to unlock that mindset. It is not always about us not being able to “take our money with us”. Sometimes, it is about what kind of legacy we are trying to build. And that is a piece that does not get taught – we do not always think about leaving a legacy. [03:25] The Need to break generational beliefs We have to start looking at our family and generational beliefs when it comes to money. Because in doing so, we are breaking cycles for the future and stopping the feelings that our community keeps bumping up from time to time. It’s true, we may not know how money works and if we do not get to the point where we do not understand it, we will just constantly be in the rat race. [09:00] Recontextualizing our beliefs and how it affects us Recontextualizing means knowing when was the first time we discovered we had doubts and what was the actual doubt sounds like. We can then go back and evaluate the lessons and learnings we took. Then look at how belief formed all of the decisions we made thereby. Then we can assess whether or not our belief was true by examining and looking for evidence. In doing so, we are losing the emotional attachments to these beliefs. [13:28] Healing before accepting wealth Healing has to take place – whether it be from trauma and pain before we can move to accept wealth. We have to do some work; this is something others are not willing to do because they are afraid of what they can find. However, the only way out is through. We have to allow ourselves to be with what it is and then it will have less power over us. When we acknowledge it, we become more in control. [19:42] Understanding the unconscious mind We have to understand the unconscious mind in order to reprogram it. Unfortunately, many people are just out of touch with that part of themselves. One of the ways is to really get quiet. It can be as simple as reframing but we have a lot of blind spots and we can’t always be the ones to transform ourselves. The majority of transformations happen in communities. We ought to find a community that can see the blind spots to be able to have that reprogram take place. Episode 76: Redefining Our Relationship to Tribe w/Dawn Dalili
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dawn Dalili and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about redefining tribes to build a thriving community and thriving health. Let’s learn what defines a tribe, the challenges in outgrowing the rules of a tribe, and when to step away from a tribe. Highlights from the conversation: [00:53] Dawn Dalili · A mom and a warrior · Naturopathic Physician · Owner, Montana Center for Vibrant Living [03:51] The challenge in outgrowing As we step into different areas of personal development, our immediate community may not understand. Then, we begin to go around like a square trying to peg in a round hole. And it can be very challenging when these people are your tribe. On some level, each of us must confront the challenge that comes with outgrowing one type of tribe – which is one way that we experience safety. [07:05] The “rule” is the “tribe” When we look at tribes, in any context, there are certain rules of membership. And the rule is the tribe in a sense. In the same way, if we look at sports, the rules are baseball. If we change the rules, we are playing a game, but we are not playing baseball. Therefore, when we start to break the rules, then we question “am I still heard of” in the tribe. The only way to go around it is to question what are the actual rules. [08:50] The danger in following the rules The rules of the games are so clear, we either follow them or not. When we look at tribe, we are looking at families, loved ones, or a group. The rules are for us to guess and then we tend to self-impose adherence to the rules that we presumed are required of membership. That’s when we start to get stuck – and then we are living by it as though it is “truth” required for membership. The way to go around it is to ask ourselves – what else might be true. [20:50] Letting go of a tribe Sometimes, some tribes need to be let go of. Especially the tribes that may be so toxic that it warrants stepping away completely. And that does not mean that if you choose to leave a tribe, that there may not be room for membership again. In essence, once part of the tribe, always part of the tribe. In cases like this, it is important to permit ourselves for doing so because one of the things resulting in stepping away from a tribe is enormous guilt that is extremely unhealthy and traumatic. Episode 74: Why Your Unique Voice Matters w/Beverley Barnes
SHOW NOTES: This week, Beverley Barnes and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about why we are not meant to be invisible. Learn why it is important that we acknowledge our uniqueness and not allow the world to dictate us as well as the importance of starting to feel. Highlights from the conversation: [02:20] Beverley Barnes · Jamaican descent, born and grew up in England ‘til 7 & moved to Canada · Founder, Coach Instructor and Mentor at Soul's Calling® Academy · Master Life Coach Instructor at Martha Beck, Inc. [05:24] “Fit in, do not make waves” mindset Living in a foreign land, Beverley learned to stay “just be invisible enough” to not be seen and try to get seen just enough for people to think you are okay. People of color have a universal experience when it comes to racial discrimination. When we try hard our whole lives to fit it, we would have no idea what would make us stand out. Which likely means we do not know who we are. On the other hand, some of us are also busy proving to others that we deserve to stand out in the crowd. [16:05] The breaking point of deciding to FEEL We can be good at coping with situations that were not good for us. In return, all we do is cope. It is imperative to start deciding to feel as opposed to repress and not feel. We can cope, persist and keep going but there will come a point that we have to face the reality of it all. We need to be able to STOP denying, coping, pretending, and trying to fit in in a world where we do not fit. Instead, need to start to tell ourselves to FEEL. Deciding to feel is beautiful because we are allowing ourselves to be human. [20:20] Purpose adjacent vs Purpose aligned It is so easy to be purpose adjacent because that is what the world is dictating to us. It can get really tricky that we end up rationalizing it. However, what is beautiful is for us to be able to follow our own path and do what truly fulfills us. The path is still not so clear for us even up to now but our work changes things. Our work changes the world – and sometimes we think it is not enough or that somebody else is already doing it but it is essential. It has to start with a strong decision to follow our own path. It is never too late! [26:00] Survival work vs. Sacred work We can have our survival work. We have to make sure we are clear what our survival work is, otherwise, it becomes our sacred work. Survival and sacred work are two completely different things. We can say our survival work funds our sacred work but it should not be the fallback. There should only be one direction – and that is to lean towards the sacred work. And whatever we are doing to fund that now is going to eventually turn away. Episode 72: The Power of the Mind in Healing the Body w/Amobi Okoye
SHOW NOTES: This week, Amobi Okoye and I took the conversation to another level as we talk his experience as the youngest player ever drafted on NFL, the illness that almost killed him, and the positive mindset he has after being victorious over Autoimmune Encephalitis. How can you get up from a big fall? Highlights from the conversation: [01:30] Amobi Okoye · Autoimmune Encephalitis Survivor · Nigerian-born former American football · Youngest Player ever drafted on NFL Team · Founder of Amobi Okoye Foundation [03:12] An inspiring story to tell Amobi started schooling at a very young age, two and a half to be exact. As others say, he was young for his age. Then he moved to the US when he was 12 years old. From there, he was introduced to football which he loved since. At the age of 19, Amobi Okoye graduated college in Psychology. A star defensive end at Louisville, Amobi joined the Houston Texans in 2007. He then became the youngest player drafted in NFL history. [15:34] Rise after the fall Amobi’s story is one that touches many lives! On Thanksgiving of 2014, his family organized a dinner to celebrate his remarkable recovery. It was there that he embraced all that he endured. After battling his way back from the near-fatal illness, he felt like he’s a walking miracle. It made him believe God has a better plan for him. His relationship with Him spiritually became stronger. He was involved in his church more often and he believes God would not put us through something that we could not handle. After he recovered, he trained again. [15:53] The sickness no one know was coming On March 15-17, 2013, Amobi was in a medically-induced coma for three (3) months and became more coherent three (3) months later. He nearly died from brain inflammation called Autoimmune Encephalitis. To him, it felt like he was just taking a nap, not knowing he was unconscious for a total of 6 months. After waking up from the illness, he was in denial for quite a long time but accepted it later on eventually. [19:20] What’s next? There was no thought to doing anything else for Amobi after he recovered – it was to go back to what he loved doing. Since officially retiring in 2019, he is focused on Amobi Okoye Foundation. It is focused on both the domestic and international divisions. The foundation aims to give hope to kids and communities by using athletics to promote academics. At the moment, his team is working on getting the website back, building the foundation, and campaigning for Autoimmune Encephalitis. He feels like it is his calling to create awareness about this illness. Amobi’s victory over illness is definitely worth sharing! Episode 70: The Truth About Trauma w/ Cerita Yvonne
SHOW NOTES: This week, Cerita Ibrahim and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about the truth about trauma – what it actually is, why it is unhealthy to not recognize them, and the danger of pushing them way down our subconscious minds. Learn why we should not allow our “filters” to control us. Highlights from the conversation: [02:16] Cerita Yvonne Ibrahim, MSW, CCTP, CCTPII, CCHt · Therapist & Coach · Relational trauma expert · Founder and CEO of Love U [02:45] Trauma is everywhere In any relationship we experience, there is some kind of trauma involved. We think traumas are all huge, but then there are also insidious experiences that happen over time. Trauma, in its essence, means “a deep emotional wound”. It is not about what happens TO you, it is about what happens INSIDE of you, as a result of your experiences. The big T traumas can be abuse, experience in a natural disaster, or neglect. Although, what happens inside us remains the same, whether we experience Capital T traumas or emotional neglect. Understanding this will help us learn why we struggle in our relationships. [04:45] How trauma can be experienced Trauma is not limited to what was done to us. Rather, it is something we experience, witness, or something that directly happens to us. 9/11 can be very traumatic even to those who are not physically in New York. There are so many iterations of how trauma can be experienced that will dictate the way we relate with people, especially in our relationships. [15:00] How trauma is expressed (men vs. women) How trauma is expressed looks different in men versus in women. Men may need to look into doing more personal development. Connecting to our emotions can also be difficult, especially when we push them down for so long. This can cause us to even question what type of emotion is in there. Is it sadness? Fear? Or Anger? This is why it is important for our men to normalize doing personal development work. [23:30] Creating a personal glass ceiling When we allow our trauma to continue to fester and we do not look at it, we create our own personal glass ceiling. We can be successful, it’s not that we can’t, but there will always be a barrier that we keep hitting. And we would wonder why we could not get past that point. The truth is there is something else that is causing that personal glass ceiling that is keeping us from allowing ourselves to fully enjoy our life – the abundance of life. Episode 68: Financial Literacy Is The Foundation To Building Wealth w/ Calvin Wilkinson
SHOW NOTES: This week, Calvin Wilkinson and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about financial literacy, the importance of starting early, and how to achieve homeownership and build wealth. Financial literacy is an important topic not many people discuss. Highlights from the conversation:  [01:23] Calvin Wilkinson · Chief Executive Officer at Goldwater Home Loans, Inc. · Former Intern at Westminster Mortgage [10:09] Financial and Entrepreneurial Literacy Some of us do not get educated on financial and entrepreneurial mindsets when we were young. Investing is extremely is so important – money is something we should use to buy assets. It is important in our community that we begin to do this so we can begin to break cycles of having to start from scratch. Doing so also creates a legacy for our future generation. [18:07] Fortune favors the BOLD We never know what boldness can bring. It is what gets us started in taking big steps one at a time. Some of us think we have to have a lot of money before starting to invest. For instance, many people think buying a home is more expensive than renting. In terms of buying a home, it is not that expensive as many people think. ICE (Income, Credit, Employment) are what we need to buy a home. [26:27] Net worth fear related to age Sometimes, we do not take action because of fear and shame that we are not where we are supposed to be, financially. This is a mindset we have to get rid of. Many people are way better off than they thought they would be. Goes to show we never know our actual score until we speak to someone who can help figure out all the options we have. Where we focus our minds is what we produce. [30:15] "Strive to be wealthy" mindset Getting a financial checkup is imperative. This can be done with either a mortgage professional, a financial advisor, or someone who can look at our finances and provide realistic goals and plans to get exactly where we want to be. We should not wait ‘til there’s a crisis. We should not fear being broke but rather want to be wealthy. We have to be driven by a greater goal and not just fear the worst case. We have to actively move forward to being well instead of worry about what could happen if we do the opposite. It is moving towards something positive. There is a huge between being fearful and being motivated by something else. Episode 66: Normalizing Speaking About Mental Health & Trauma in Black Men w/ Tillman Givens III
SHOW NOTES: This week, Tillman Givens III and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about experiencing personal trauma, how community can help get through it, the importance of allowing ourselves to blossom, and making a huge impact on the lives of others. Sometimes, it's our light, not our darkness that scares us the most. Highlights from the conversation: [01:08] Tillman Givens III · Dad of 2 young kids · Owner of Titanium King Ad Agency [10:18] The stress of the trauma When we have the stress of the trauma and we intervene early (meaning we have a support system or a community around us that will put us in a direction) it does not put us in a situation wherein we are stuck like PTSD. We get stuck when we do not have the RESOURCES to deal with the trauma. Yes, we may move on in life but emotionally and mentally, we get stuck in a certain place. It is important to evaluate whether we are stuck or not. [17:08] Allowing ourselves to blossom Sometimes, we stay at a certain place because we are distracted from who we really could be. As we let our light shine, we unconsciously let other people do the same. We need to stop to celebrate our accomplishments and gracefully accept compliments. One of the ways to do it is to evaluate at night and think about the things that are good during the day. What gets celebrated gets repeated. [29:15] Figuring out what we want Light does not shine the best in the abundance of light. It shines the brightest in the darkness. Some people say they want to have their own business when what they actually want is freedom. Some of us want to meet the love of our lives and what we really want is security in relationships. The key is to figure out what exactly we need so we can find the right resources for it. [35:00] When to find help When we empower ourselves, we want to empower others as well. When we look back and acknowledge ourselves, if we backslide, that could be a clue that we should not be doing it on our own. A community that will elevate and pulls us to who we say we want to be. This community can be a coach, a therapist, or a listener. Episode 64: Your Past Doesn’t Have to Be Your Future w/Pedro Santos
SHOW NOTES: This week, Pedro Santos and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about getting up from a fall and with courage, turning challenges around, and becoming world-changers. This is such a lovely conversation about believing in ourselves because when we do, that’s when people believe in us too. Highlights from the conversation: [00:22] Pedro Santos · Founder/ Chief Purpose and Vision Officer of ENBY NYC · Independent Personal Trainer in personal trainer in Chelsea, NYC · LQBTQ+ community member and supporter [03:30] Challenges while growing up Growing up, Pedro didn’t understand how to navigate life and how to fit in with society. That took him to a dark place which had him end up in prison for narcotics distribution. His first four years in prison were spent in shame and resentment. However, the next four (4) years he knew decided he'd do something else. He started studying philosophy, psychology, music, and history to find out what he was capable of doing. He came out of prison well-equipped and started a business. [07:50] The mindset shift Shame and resentment do not allow us to crack ourselves and explore our true selves. Life is really about progressing and doing better things. Additionally, knowing and seeking help from professionals will help us progress in life. Sometimes, we can know things and still commit mistakes. When we seek help and counseling, it makes a huge difference. [12:30] Becoming world-changers Sometimes, we can be so insecure that we could not believe we could change the world. The only way we can become world-changers is by starting to believe that we can have an impact. By reading and doing research, we can find tools and apply them that serve us and our minds from subliminal messages that can put us down. Once we believe, then others start to believe. Episode 62: The Importance of Self Belief w/Angel Thomas
SHOW NOTES: This week, Angel Thomas and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about affirming and believing ourselves, stopping the negative thinking right when they happen, and reaffirming ourselves and what we are capable of doing. Additionally, we also discussed the need to talk about the things people do not usually talk about. Highlights from the conversation: [00:48] Angel Thomas · A wife and a mom to 2 beautiful kids · Host of Love Talk Show, a self-empowerment talk show · A license financial professional, helping people with financial literacy [02:45] We don’t always believe We do not realize that we are negating our self-affirmation. A lot of times, we don’t always believe that we can. We don’t always believe we can achieve financial freedom – and it is about trusting ourselves. Self-belief is understanding what we want, where we are, and where we are trying to go. Acknowledging that we cannot pour from an empty cup, it is important to not only appreciate others but more importantly, ourselves. [04:43] The components of self-believe Believing in ourselves is knowing that we may not succeed at everything but we tried. We do not do things out of fear of failure but instead, being uncomfortable to be comfortable. Affirming who we want to be and who we are what we are saying, even when things go wrong. It is to keep believing in ourselves no matter what. [08:34] Recognizing and Interrupting Patterns Pattern interrupt is recognizing the negative thinking, but then something clicks, and we say STOP. What happens then is the brain hears the command to the unconscious mind. Interrupting the pattern in the middle of the pattern is a smart thing to do. The beginner step to this is to catch ourselves in those moments, recognizing we are in the moment, and stopping ourselves out loud. Then start affirming. [18:10] Shifting our mindset away from the negative Our brain is a very flexible organ - when we put it to use, is very powerful. The whole thing of “I cannot” and “I do not have the” are excuses to not learn something new. There could be other systemic circumstances that may make things a little bit more challenging, however, the bottom line is that wherever we are, we can learn something new. And it is a matter of believing and trusting ourselves that we can do that. Episode 60: Developing Entrepreneurial GRIT w/ Janet Kafadar
SHOW NOTES: This week, Janet Kafadar and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about entrepreneurial mindset, dream bigger, and using all of our experiences as stepping stones to a business we want to start. We also discussed how important it is to leave a legacy as a guide for the next generation. Highlights from the conversation: [02:31] Janet Kafadar · Mom to a 9-year-old · Online Business Coach & Marketing Consultant for Black life coaches [06:44] Mapping on experiences to start a business We acquire a skill set in whatever job we are doing. We have a wider skill set than we realize. Many people go with what they love doing but that is not always the case. Sometimes, they are just stepping stones. The thing we want to do will just come along somehow. The big vision is sometimes just the stepping stone to what we are destined to do. [11:25] Growing a business takes time Success never happens overnight. Other people sensationalize the ease of building a business when the truth is we need to have tons of patience. Part of the dirty work is to know the problem and what the symptoms are. In doing so, we will know the right message we want to speak. Keeping in mind the importance to keep doing what we are doing. Otherwise, it will just be hard work without valuing having the WHY in mind. [23:08] Developing the WHY There are two mindsets to moving into entrepreneurship – (1) what you are running FROM and (2) what you are running TO. What is more powerful in terms of a why is having something to run towards – something bigger than ourselves. Our why is what will pull us through the tough times. If our why is just about us being comfortable, anything can derail us. [31:08] Think BIGGER We have to think bigger - it is okay to have big dreams. As people run towards what fulfills them, the purpose itself begins to reveal. We are to be the stepping stones for the generation to come. Show and lead the way how things are done so they do not need to start from scratch. That is what it means to dream bigger – to think about ourselves but not stop there. Instead, think of the bigger picture after. [41:28] The power of duplication We do not have the wherewithal to serve all those who need us. Duplicating ourselves is one of the important things an entrepreneur should do to create more resources for our community when needed. We duplicate ourselves to create more “resources” to serve “us”. Episode 58: Getting Our Full History And Teaching Our Kids To Empower A New Future w/ Sean Blount
SHOW NOTES: This week, Sean Blount and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about critical race theory, knowing the entire history, as well as the importance of educating our kids and our future generation. Highlights from the conversation:  [01:45] Sean Blount · Management position with the US Department of Agriculture · Developed his podcast from a “happy hour” with his colleagues [05:45] Critical Race Theory – how it’s impacting the space Critical Race Theory, or CRT, is a theoretical and interpretive mode that examines the appearance of race and racism across dominant cultural modes of expression. It is an academic framework on how we look at laws and policies that have shaped America at how it impacted us. Some of it, we hear frequently but we have done so much and are so involved. A lot of our history may not be pretty, it may have been violent and very dark, and however, a lot of it has been erased and are not taught to us. [13:15] Suppressing what really happened – doing our part teaching the history This could be a play on keeping what really happened which could be due to guilt. The reality is that just because history is not being taught in schools does not mean it will not get taught. This is where we have to take responsibility and learn the history ourselves so we can then teach our children what was not being taught in school. [19:33] Taking Responsibility - Educating ourselves and sharing what we learned Some people are busy being parents and living life that they have not just opened that door to allow themselves to take time and do the research. This is why we are on a movement to share what we learned and not keep it to ourselves. We play a big role as part of this whole movement to dismantle the system of oppression and suppression of true history and the education system. [22:25] Ripples that create a wave Doing things like going to the school board meetings, being a part of the PTA, educating our children – these are the small steps we can do to create that ripple. And with a whole bunch of ripples, we can create a wave! Catch up with Sean Blount by visiting his podcast at  https://buzzsprout.com/1053859  or contact him via email at  beingbluntco@gmail.com. Episode 56: The Healing Power of Storytelling w/Christine Mapondera
SHOW NOTES: This week, Christine Mapondera-Talley and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about celebrating and elevating the diversity of Africa and the African diaspora, the power of storytelling, as well as the importance of narrating the story from an African perspective. Highlights from the conversation:  [01:15] Christine Mapondera · A mom and a wife · Publisher of children’s books and magazine. · Life and success coach, Meridian Integrative Health Institute, LLC · Founder of Global Kidz House, a book publishing company specializing in children’s books that celebrate the diversity of Africa and the African diaspora. [02:09] Becoming a storyteller Prior to literature, Christine was after fashion and design. She did not have any grand plan and it was more of an idea to satisfy her needs which turned into doors of opportunity. Sometimes, it is out of our own needs and desire to empower our loved ones that the best things come along and get opened up. And in the process, you realize how people appreciate what you we are doing. [12:08] Culture and ancestral history Storytelling of our cultural and ancestral history is most often written and published by non-black people. Majority of the time, these books are about a child living in a refugee camp, or escaping a war, or seeking a better life to be saved by somebody. This is problematic because if we are drawn to these kinds of stories, it is like an infatuation. It makes one ignore everything else and are contributing to the perpetual viewpoints of who Africans are. [22:22] Empowering parents to empower children Christine’s passion in storytelling helps empowers moms and dads to empower their children as well. One of the ways she wants to do this is by infusing arts and crafts into helping children understand African countries. The goal was to learn through play or collaborative tasks that would cement in the kids minds. Doing them in the simplistic but educational way. Episode 54: The Courage To Take The Less Traveled Road w/ Precious Price
SHOW NOTES: This week, Precious Price and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about starting young, and identifying our purpose and passion. Episode 52: Leveling Up in the Next Chapter in Our Lives w/Dr. Jacinta Elder
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Jacinta Elder and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about leveling up in the next chapters of our lives. We also discussed how important it is that we pursue personal development to expand our capacity and possibilities. Highlights from the conversation:  [01:55] Dr. Jacinta Elder · Mom to two (2) daughters and grandma to two (2) grandsons · Board-certified Practicing internal medicine physician · Life and success coach, Meridian Integrative Health Institute, LLC [02:54] What does “next chapter” look like? Next chapter is “impact” – it is how our lives, at the end of the day, have an impact on those around us. It is important that we pursue personal development. When we expand ourselves, we do not only expand our capacity to impact but we also expand our opportunities and the view of possibilities that are available. [10:24] Nutrition for the mind A lot of times, when we focus on health, we tend to focus on the physical aspect – the exercise, the nutrition, and physical strength – leaving out the nutrition of the mind. A lot of it can be because as human beings, we tend to relate to the things that are tangible. The mind is how the brain works but we often do not think about optimizing the brain, we think about the body and the muscles. Mental nutrition is as important as physical health. [19:36] Is complaint bad? A complaint in itself is not the problem, it is the space in which we complain. When we complain to look for a solution and all the possibilities, then we are not complaining for nothing. However, when we are constantly complaining without looking for a solution, we get stuck and distracted. In return, we then have a hard time moving forward to the next level. Episode 50: Empowered Single Parenting: A conversation w/Dr. Kamilah Williams
Dr. Kamilah Williams Title: Empowered Single Parenting: A conversation w/Dr. Kamilah Williams SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Kamilah Williams and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about the challenges of single parenthood and co-parenting as well as the importance of building a strong support community for your child. Highlights from the conversation: [01:40] Dr. Kamilah Williams · Board-certified family physician · Founder of The Single Well Coaching Program [04:04] Single parenting and co-parenting For so long, single motherhood has always had a negative connotation to it. It is about time we shift the narrative. Not all single parenthood and co-parenthood results in a negative experience. Some people automatically think that the father is not involved or there is no male influence to the child when they meet a single woman, especially a black woman. Many co-parents find ways to make the co-parenting work and it can work out. [12:16] The power of community It is important to have positive male role models around, they can be the child’s relatives and loved ones. Our children need other male and female influence who can help us raise them well. Our kids are smart that they learn different lessons from different adults in different walks of live. Creating a village of people that we trust as well as a communicatory relationship with our child that they can tell us anything is essential so we are confident that the community we created for our child is a powerful community. [32:39] Career and single parenting It is not easy to be with our child whenever and wherever, especially when we are working full time. Entrepreneurship could allow single parents to have the freedom to be with their children while still earning at the same time. Many parents are afraid to jump into entrepreneurship but once one take that leap, the freedom and time with our child will be worth it – it is a whole mindset shift. Episode 48: Being Empowered to Make Transitions in Life w/ Pamela Burkett-Jones
SHOW NOTES: This week, Pamela Burkett-Jones and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about staying focused in conquering personal goals and making sure that our actions are consistent with our words. Highlights from the conversation:  [01:14] Pamela Burkett-Jones · Life coach and professional/personal development consultant · Founder and CEO of Proactive Life Coaching and Consulting LLC · A former criminal justice and law enforcement professional [03:23] Allowing ourselves to transition careers In our generation, we’ve awakened to “you don’t have to stay in a career and be unsatisfied in that career” or “it is okay to grow out of your career”. Sometimes, we don’t just step out of the box but rather “burn that box” because we are not designed to live in a box. Our parents and grandparents stay places that they do not want to be but want to get that retirement and stay there but the world has now evolved differently from what they saw in us. [10:45] External and Internal noises Shielding ourselves from external noises and overcoming the internal noises caused by the unconscious mind. Fear has different levels: there are even fear that we do not realize or identify as one. For instance, some people love Fridays but hate Mondays and how quick the weekend goes by when in fact, all days are alike and it just depends upon how we focus on those days. These are parts of the noise that we are hearing each day and it is important that we know how to manage and shut these noises off. [18:50] One foot in front of the other People sometimes disregard small steps thinking they always have to make a big leap. It is the small steps that add up. And then we may think we won’t make it but as we go through that run, we would look back feeling fulfilled that we made it far. Sometimes, we can be so results-oriented that we forget to celebrate and when we forget to celebrate, it is easy to feel demotivated. It is essential that we celebrate small wins. And when we get there, let us treat the finish line as the starting line for the next goal. Catch up with Pamela Burkett-Jones by contacting her at Proactivelifepbj@gmail.com. [8:35] We are an evolution We are not meant to do one of anything forever. We can use all the things we learned to the next calling we want to do. We don’t need to settle for just one thing. Sometimes, we just have a sense that there is something else for us: something bigger for us to do. And if we are honest about it and accept that our life is meant to be joyful, it can uncover a lot and gives permission to people around us to do the same thing. Episode 44: You Don’t Have to Relive Your Trauma to Heal It W/ Dr. Robert Carbuccia
SHOW NOTES: This week, Robert Carbuccia and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about the fear of undergoing a therapeutic process, why reliving past experiences can be traumatic and when to know you are ready to do the “deep work” of healing your trauma. Highlights from the conversation: [03:10] Robert Carbuccia · Neuro Linguistic Programming Trainer’s Trainer · Real Estate Sales Coach Creating the Next Millionaire Real Estate Agent [06:24] Old stuff creeping up in the background. One thing to note is when it starts to creep up, it means you are ready to resolve it. The unconscious mind stores and protects memories. The highest directive of the unconscious mind is to protect the body. When it has the opportunity to represent things that are ready for resolution, things start to come up. If you are remembering things from the past that are stopping you, it means the unconscious mind is ready for you to resolve it. [14:35] What NLP hypnosis is not Many people think that hypnosis, NLP and unconscious mind work is “mind control” installed at some level by groups of people. When people is misinformed about what NLP is, people tend to shy away from it. Additionally, people are afraid to deal with their traumas because they are afraid of what they are going to see and find out. You do not have to relive the trauma in order to heal the trauma – that is where NLP hypnosis comes in. [19:38] Is anything other than the traditional church method the “devil” Neuro linguistic programming is not a religious process but a neurological or metaphysical process. There is a stigma around unconscious mind and neurolinguistics programming taking Christians away from God but it does not. In fact, NLP helps deepen your connection with the high power. A lot of it is preached in the pulpit out of fear. Episode 42: From Code Switching to Code Fluidity w/Dr. Ijeoma Opara
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Ijeoma Opara and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about fluidity, the “blessing ripples” and the things we do that’s limiting us and our capability to do great things. Highlights from the conversation: [00:43] Dr. Ijeoma Opara · Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Physician and Associate Program Director at Wayne State University School of Medicine · Helps embody joy, abundance and freedom and fight for justice so the black community can live and thrive freely and prosper. [07:50] The fluidity of approaching the work The fluidity to be able to step in where we are to having your voice be heard in activism in the way that works for us. There is liberation in both ends, all of these are connected to limiting beliefs or the scarcity mindset that tells us “if you don’t do this, then you’re not doing it at all.” Each of us have our own skills and influence in our own little scope and we are on our own level of our journey. [13:30] Wherever you are at is good enough Wherever you are at now is good enough. When you’re ready, move to the next level where you’re then going to be good enough. And you do what you can do where you’re at given your resources, your options, and your availability. We are all powerful in our own space! We do not know how we are impacting someone wherever we are in our spectrum. [19:45] The importance of your support system Pay attention to the people who plant seeds in your life. They see something in you that they believe in and you owe it to them to believe in yourself. Believe in the power of community and embrace the joy of seeing different examples of what you could be. There is power in fluidity to navigate and to pivot so that you have freedom inside of that. [23:30] Be better at receiving “blessing ripples” Stop rejecting the compliments and the positive things that people say to you, rather, embrace and claim it! Do not deflect the compliment with another compliment, rather, receive the one that was given to you first and then deflect the compliment. Do not minimize, outright reject or deflect the “blessings” right back. [30:38] Practice intentional reflect more Practice quiet time, meditation and prayer. It is one thing to pray but take a few moments of your time to just be quiet, listen, receive and reflect. Reflect on your day, week, month or year. Open your ears and receive it! The about your day and receive it then feed into the ripple of other people’s lives. Catch up with Dr. Ijeoma Opara by contacting her at ijeomannodimopara@gmail.com. Episode 40: Developing Prosperity Mindset & Saying YES to Abundance W/ Dr. Latifat Akintade
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Latifat Akintade and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about money and finances, what we do that block all the possibilities of wealth and what we should do to open ourselves to more opportunities. Highlights from the conversation: [00:05] Dr. Latifat Akintade · A mother of 3 little ladies · GI doctor based in California · Podcaster and the person behind MoneyFitMD · Helps women Physicians grow their net worth from the inside out [03:58] Getting our money right The uncomfortable process of learning how to get our money right. The reason why a lot of us struggle when it comes to money has nothing to do with numbers – the actual method is the easy part. However, the shame, emotions and mind blocks are a different story – nobody wants to tell anybody that they are broke and that they worry about money at night. No matter what profession we’re in, there’s an external, societal expectation that at a certain age, we have to have gotten our stuff together. [07:45] Struggles when it comes to getting our money right Our society plays a big role as to how we struggle getting our money right from our families to the people who don’t even know who we are. We are in a post-colonization world where we’re taught that one thing is right and one thing isn’t. And the effect is still here. We are unlearning now but some of our parents didn’t have the luxury of the internet space where they could leverage the level of this conversation. [13:45] Saying yes to abundance of wealth When we think our job is our only source of income, we are saying no to abundance of wealth. Many people think to earn money, we have to trade time for it on a one-to-one ratio. This is another lie that we are told. Our parents grow up in a different time where talking about money was not a thing. As X generation, we are waking up to a realization that there is something more. That it is possible to create multiple streams of income. [18:18] Stopping “buts” and start thinking “maybe”, and “what if” Thinking “maybe” helps us open our minds into endless possibilities. Instead of saying but, say “maybe”. And then when we’re there, then we can start thinking “what” instead of “how”. There’s something beautiful about dreaming. Imagining ourselves and getting the feeling of excitement thinking about being financially free. Then the excitement will motivate us to keep going.
