Episode 46: Becoming the HOST of our own lives w/Andrea Freeman
SHOW NOTES: This week, Andrea Freeman and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about putting our mini callings into a bigger calling, understanding that we are always evolving and becoming the H.O.S.T. of our own lives. Highlights from the conversation: [01:29] Andrea Freeman · Mom, wife and a former public school teacher · Founder of Andrea Freeman Consulting · Founder and Principal Designer of Andrea Freeman Events [04:53] Putting “mini callings” into “bigger calling” Morphing all our experiences and putting them into your big calling. Everything we learn are essential for the bigger work that is to come – our full purpose. Our job is to lean into what brings us joy and satisfaction. Our life experience is constantly leaving us clues and our job is to open up to be able to receive them. It is okay to change careers multiple jobs when we need to. [8:35] We are an evolution We are not meant to do one of anything forever. We can use all the things we learned to the next calling we want to do. We don’t need to settle for just one thing. Sometimes, we just have a sense that there is something else for us: something bigger for us to do. And if we are honest about it and accept that our life is meant to be joyful, it can uncover a lot and gives permission to people around us to do the same thing. [17:10] Being the H.O.S.T of our life To be a host, we have to: H – Honor our why O – Own who we truly are S – Shift our perspective T – Take inspired action Catch up with Andrea Freeman by contacting her at hello@andreafreemanconsulting.com. Episode 44: You Don’t Have to Relive Your Trauma to Heal It W/ Dr. Robert Carbuccia
SHOW NOTES: This week, Robert Carbuccia and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about the fear of undergoing a therapeutic process, why reliving past experiences can be traumatic and when to know you are ready to do the “deep work” of healing your trauma. Highlights from the conversation: [03:10] Robert Carbuccia · Neuro Linguistic Programming Trainer’s Trainer · Real Estate Sales Coach Creating the Next Millionaire Real Estate Agent [06:24] Old stuff creeping up in the background. One thing to note is when it starts to creep up, it means you are ready to resolve it. The unconscious mind stores and protects memories. The highest directive of the unconscious mind is to protect the body. When it has the opportunity to represent things that are ready for resolution, things start to come up. If you are remembering things from the past that are stopping you, it means the unconscious mind is ready for you to resolve it. [14:35] What NLP hypnosis is not Many people think that hypnosis, NLP and unconscious mind work is “mind control” installed at some level by groups of people. When people is misinformed about what NLP is, people tend to shy away from it. Additionally, people are afraid to deal with their traumas because they are afraid of what they are going to see and find out. You do not have to relive the trauma in order to heal the trauma – that is where NLP hypnosis comes in. [19:38] Is anything other than the traditional church method the “devil” Neuro linguistic programming is not a religious process but a neurological or metaphysical process. There is a stigma around unconscious mind and neurolinguistics programming taking Christians away from God but it does not. In fact, NLP helps deepen your connection with the high power. A lot of it is preached in the pulpit out of fear. Episode 42: From Code Switching to Code Fluidity w/Dr. Ijeoma Opara
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Ijeoma Opara and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about fluidity, the “blessing ripples” and the things we do that’s limiting us and our capability to do great things. Highlights from the conversation: [00:43] Dr. Ijeoma Opara · Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Physician and Associate Program Director at Wayne State University School of Medicine · Helps embody joy, abundance and freedom and fight for justice so the black community can live and thrive freely and prosper. [07:50] The fluidity of approaching the work The fluidity to be able to step in where we are to having your voice be heard in activism in the way that works for us. There is liberation in both ends, all of these are connected to limiting beliefs or the scarcity mindset that tells us “if you don’t do this, then you’re not doing it at all.” Each of us have our own skills and influence in our own little scope and we are on our own level of our journey. [13:30] Wherever you are at is good enough Wherever you are at now is good enough. When you’re ready, move to the next level where you’re then going to be good enough. And you do what you can do where you’re at given your resources, your options, and your availability. We are all powerful in our own space! We do not know how we are impacting someone wherever we are in our spectrum. [19:45] The importance of your support system Pay attention to the people who plant seeds in your life. They see something in you that they believe in and you owe it to them to believe in yourself. Believe in the power of community and embrace the joy of seeing different examples of what you could be. There is power in fluidity to navigate and to pivot so that you have freedom inside of that. [23:30] Be better at receiving “blessing ripples” Stop rejecting the compliments and the positive things that people say to you, rather, embrace and claim it! Do not deflect the compliment with another compliment, rather, receive the one that was given to you first and then deflect the compliment. Do not minimize, outright reject or deflect the “blessings” right back. [30:38] Practice intentional reflect more Practice quiet time, meditation and prayer. It is one thing to pray but take a few moments of your time to just be quiet, listen, receive and reflect. Reflect on your day, week, month or year. Open your ears and receive it! The about your day and receive it then feed into the ripple of other people’s lives. Catch up with Dr. Ijeoma Opara by contacting her at ijeomannodimopara@gmail.com. Episode 40: Developing Prosperity Mindset & Saying YES to Abundance W/ Dr. Latifat Akintade
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Latifat Akintade and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about money and finances, what we do that block all the possibilities of wealth and what we should do to open ourselves to more opportunities. Highlights from the conversation: [00:05] Dr. Latifat Akintade · A mother of 3 little ladies · GI doctor based in California · Podcaster and the person behind MoneyFitMD · Helps women Physicians grow their net worth from the inside out [03:58] Getting our money right The uncomfortable process of learning how to get our money right. The reason why a lot of us struggle when it comes to money has nothing to do with numbers – the actual method is the easy part. However, the shame, emotions and mind blocks are a different story – nobody wants to tell anybody that they are broke and that they worry about money at night. No matter what profession we’re in, there’s an external, societal expectation that at a certain age, we have to have gotten our stuff together. [07:45] Struggles when it comes to getting our money right Our society plays a big role as to how we struggle getting our money right from our families to the people who don’t even know who we are. We are in a post-colonization world where we’re taught that one thing is right and one thing isn’t. And the effect is still here. We are unlearning now but some of our parents didn’t have the luxury of the internet space where they could leverage the level of this conversation. [13:45] Saying yes to abundance of wealth When we think our job is our only source of income, we are saying no to abundance of wealth. Many people think to earn money, we have to trade time for it on a one-to-one ratio. This is another lie that we are told. Our parents grow up in a different time where talking about money was not a thing. As X generation, we are waking up to a realization that there is something more. That it is possible to create multiple streams of income. [18:18] Stopping “buts” and start thinking “maybe”, and “what if” Thinking “maybe” helps us open our minds into endless possibilities. Instead of saying but, say “maybe”. And then when we’re there, then we can start thinking “what” instead of “how”. There’s something beautiful about dreaming. Imagining ourselves and getting the feeling of excitement thinking about being financially free. Then the excitement will motivate us to keep going. Episode 38: The Power of Partnership vs Allyship W/Dr. Jill Wener
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Jill Wener and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about the distinction between “allyship” and “partnership”, and the level of trust and the deep scrapping that needs to be done for the partnership to work effectively. Highlights from the conversation: [02:03] Dr. Jill Wener · Hospitalist-turned-expert-in-physician-wellness. · CEO of Conscious Anti-Racism. #Antiracism educator · Best-Selling Author and Podcaster · Meditation Instructor, Tapping Specialist at Conscious Health Meditation + Wellness [04:49] “Partnership” versus “allyship” With the white savior complex and this issue originally here because of white people, “partnership” is a better word to use than “allyship.” Partnership implies “we’re are a team and we are going to work on this together and have equal stakes. There has to be willingness to do it from both sides, especially when it’s hard. [11:38] Partnership to see through “blind spots” Partnership is important to so the party sees what the other does not. If it is a blind spot, we’ll never see it. Blind spots keep us stuck in specific way. People of colors have to be willing to listen and pinpoint what needs to be checked. [15:30] Speaking up for future generation The more we allow it to happen, the more they can get away with it, all the more that it continues happening. We have to be able to be courageous enough to speak up at times when it may not be comfortable in order to make the bigger difference. [17:40] What does true partnership look like? True partnership is about impact rather than intent: “how do my behaviors land” versus “how do I want them to look?” It means going really deep and scrapping out every last bit, finding more of resistance and figuring out what people in any position of power are projecting. For people of color, a level of trust to allow it to happen is very important. A level of vulnerability that comes with that partnership. [22:50] Hear and Understand For white people, there has to be a level of education that is self-motivated. It is important to push past comfort, if it doesn’t make one feel comfortable, it is not enough. Then giving the white people the tool to do that is the next big step. For people of color, one very important thing to do is to heal our traumas – be willing to look at how we’ve internalized this culture and how this greatly impacted us. When we can look at that and forgive ourselves for having internalized a lot of these cultures and heal from the impact it brings, it then gives us even more power to be able to partner. We can never heal if we don’t start to talk about it – between the cultures. ----------- Catch up with Dr. Jill Wener by visiting her at https://www.jillwener.com or contacting her at Info@JillWener.com. Episode 36: Embracing The Unknown In Our Lives w/Dr. Katherine Igah Phillips
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Katherine Igah-Phillips and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about the importance of spirituality and mind-body wellness. In this episode, we will learn to embrace the “unknown” and know the difference between spirituality and religion. Highlights from the conversation: [02:00] Dr. Katherine Igah-Phillips · A wife and a mother of 4 girls. · Owner & CEO, Mind Body Spirit Wellness Center · Best-Selling Author of the book No Time to Waste · Global Speaker and a personal development coach [08:03] The concept and depth of spirituality We cannot grasp everything about spirituality, it seeps into every aspect of our lives – everything we do and touch. It is certainly not something we should ignore. The biggest misconception about the whole spirituality versus religion is something that needs clarification. It isn’t a right vs. wrong deal – religion is the outer armor or infrastructure. If misunderstood, religion can be misused. We can use religion to deepen our spirituality if we’re wise enough to use it that way. Spirituality is more about connection & core, and less about religion. It is also a connection to humanity. Part of spirituality includes how we are reacting to other people of this realm. It involves a flow that helps navigate life. [15:13] What it means to be spiritual There is an essence of the unknown that we have to be comfortable with. In the “not knowing” comes the creation and the connection with the “higher power”, connection with humanity, connection with oneself and then navigating to all of it. Being willing to be in the “unknown” and the flow is what deepens the connection itself and makes it more fluid. The unknown can be terrifying. We have a choice to be on the other side where we don’t want to step into the unknown or be on the other side where we’re creating and manifesting our future. [23:30] Fear versus vision-focus There is an essence of the unknown that we have to be comfortable with. It’s the experience of connectedness. We are a fear-based people, especially within the last two calendar years. We worry a lot and therefore messing up the vibration of humanity as we’re all connected. [32:45] Spiritual Beings First Nobody is forcing us to do something – we did it. Doing what we want helps us strengthen our spiritual principles which are obedience and discipline. The work we do is a reflection of how we feel about ourselves. Being obedient to what we receive but not finishing it to completion, it’s a reflection of our self-discipline. Be in tuned to hear past the norm. Catch up with Dr. Katherine Igah-Phillips by visiting her at http://www.elevatewithdrk.com or contacting her at drk@elevatewithdrk.com. Episode 34: The Evolution Of The Black Male Mindset W/ Brian Burley
SHOW NOTES: This week, Brian and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about the evolution of the black man’s mindset by breaking cycles, doing the deep work, breaking generation curses, and embracing “teachable moments”. Highlights from the conversation: Brian Burley · Best-selling author of YNGBLKPGH (Young Black Pittsburgh) · Husband, father, entrepreneur and community founder of YNGBLKPGH [03:30] Best Example for the next generation Breaking Cycles: the importance of not just maintaining a certain persona as a façade but living that life as a great example so the next generation doesn’t need to unlearn but instead just keep on learning. To do this, we need to be the one doing the dirty work and breaking generation curses. Millennial and Gen Z’s may have different ways of learning things – there’s no one-size-fits-all way to do it. [10:10] Awareness vs Action: the gap between knowing and doing Knowing you have to unlearn something versus being willing and taking the action to actually unlearning something. In order to take the action, one really need to take it to heart. Undoing what’s been done that’s not healthy and unproductive is not a walk in the park. Once you know, you can’t “unknow” and just keep going. One way to do it is acknowledging the need to be empowering, encouraging and normalizing development in general. [29:50] Black Men vs. Black Women Mindset On patriarchy, black men are taught to know “what it is to be a man”, not showing feelings (that feelings are weak). On the other hand, black women are conditioned to “be strong for the family, don’t let men see you cry or they think you’re weak”. Two different perspective on how to be “strong”. Something we missed because the examples before us may have not been right. A lot of learning on the fly that needs to be done. The dynamic is off because each of us is “surviving” and in pain. We can be vulnerable together which creates “strength” inside of the bond. [37:00] A “teachable moment” Not everything is a race, we all need to start somewhere and it’s important that we allow others to run their own race. If we all get that life in general is a teachable moment, things would be a lot different. Failures and feedback don’t mean anything about us and our character – they are just “teachable moments”. ----------- Catch up with Brian Burley by visiting him at via the following social media platforms: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/YNGBLKPGH  Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/yngblkpgh                   https://www.instagram.com/_brianburley  LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/brianrburley See you on the next one! Episode 32: Being Highly Sensitive Is Not An Emotional Problem W/ Charlice Hurst
SHOW NOTES: This week, Charlice and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about high sensitivity Highlights from the conversation: [01:15] Charlice Hurst Professor of Organizational Behavior/Psychology of The University of Notre Dame Mendoza College of Business [03:21] What sensory processing sensitivity means About 15 – 30% of people are high in sensory processing sensitivity. They are called HSPs. To some, sensitivity has a negative connotation, however, people with high sensitivity are very “in tuned” to the environment and the people. Since HSPs process things more deeply, they make decisions differently. When it comes to resolution, some people look at the big picture while some look at the details. People with HSP tend to be more of a big picture people. People with sensory processing sensitivity may be misunderstood as aloof or emotional when it can be a gift if they’re looked at in a different way. [09:21] Sensitivity to smell, sound and light Some people don’t experience the noise that HSP people do which in return can cause relationship issues. People with HSP may not like going to the malls or go there when there are fewer people, they prefer online shopping and insta-carting. The ability to self-regulate is low which can be misunderstood as an inability to manage anger. Understanding the triggers and communicating it to your loved ones is a good self-care action. [25:25] Self-care for highly sensitive people For most highly sensitive people, enough sleep, regular meals, and doing something for the body to relax the nervous system is a good self-care. For busy people who may not have the time to get a massage – having a specific amount of quiet time and building in quiet time moments throughout the day to recharge self is a good way to go. [32:41] Self-esteem and HSP Researchers found that people with HSP tend to have lower self-esteem, making it harder to make a decision in doing self-care. Some of them grow up thinking something’s wrong and so a lot of people with HSP spend a lot of time working on “repairing” themselves. Episode 30: Leaving a Love Legacy For Your Family W/ Dr. Kelly Jackson King
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Kelly and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about how you can leave a love legacy by starting conversations with your loved ones about what you want after you transition, and building your legacy team. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Kelly Jackson King · Physician, Obstetrician and Gynecologist · Full time Entrepreneur at home who provides Legal Services Solutions to small businesses and Family Consultant [01:00] Love and leaving a legacy Many people are not at ease discussing death, passing, and final wishes. Sometimes, it can be hard for people to talk about, let alone be in the situation of seeing their loved ones die. Getting comfortable with this type of conversation is a good starting point. Rethinking of this process as “love and leaving a legacy” changes the conversation. It then becomes a love catalyst in caring for the person or people who might not going to be of age to be able to care for themselves. [09:15] Starting Conversations about final wishes with your loved ones A good place to start this process is by thinking what you would want, who are the people important to you are and what you have. This doesn’t have to be big but just a few moments to think about, so as to not leave it to the family to get into disarray when the time comes. One thing to note it making sure to have the conversation in a neutral time – meaning before anyone is ill. Doing it when everyone is healthy so it isn’t a conversation about death and dying but instead about love and legacy. [14:05] Choosing your key person Technically, the document needs to have at least two other people. For people with children under the age of 18, the most important is about the raising of the child. There needs to be a guardian and a trustee who will manage the financial aspect of the person. Most of the time, it is one and the same person. When choosing a guardian, using the best judgment and opinion about who is going to instill the values that most closely aligns with you, capable, and financially able. [25:40] Building your legacy team It’s important that everybody knows who everybody is. They need to all be able to be in communication. The legacy team starts with you thinking about what you wanted, next, the person closest to you, then the people you’re designating the responsibilities. This gives the person the chance to respectfully decline when they don’t think they’re ready for the said responsibility. It should involve the people you designated and the age of the children. If you’re afraid of them knowing, they may not be the right beneficiaries. ----------- Catch up with Dr. Kelly Jackson King by visiting her at www.kellyjacksonking.com or contacting her at ls.kjackking@gmail.com. Episode 28: Pushing Past Society’s Obstacles & Making a Way W/ Dr. Jen Caudle
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Jen Caudle and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about racism and bias as people of color, giving ourselves credit for what we do and becoming brilliant at what we do, not only for ourselves but for the future generation. Highlights from the conversation: [00:30] Dr. Jen Caudle · Former Ms. Iowa, competing for Miss America · Board-certified Family Medicine physician · Associate Professor in the department of Family Medicine at Rowan University-School of Osteopathic Medicine [09:10] Racism and bias as a black woman or a person of color We all experience racism and bias, especially as a black woman or a person of color. Being a black woman in the media makes the work that you do even more important for the people who are looking up to you. It is modeling something for people who may not see that there’s an opportunity for people of color. We are now seeing more doctors of colors on TV which is exactly what it should’ve been all along. [16:30] Giving ourselves credit for what we do Recognizing that we’re brilliant is as important as adjusting each other’s crowns and giving each other’s flowers. We are to acknowledge that what we do is so important. We have to work so much harder to be recognized as brilliant so we become – it is not just for us but for our future generation who are coming behind us. [21:33] Years of hard work and resiliency Finding holes of light poking through the darkness is what makes us Dr. Jen great at what she does. There are no bright sides to racism but bright aspects that come out of our negative experiences. There are a lot of bright things that have come through and come from the struggles we have as people. [24:15] What’s next? For Dr. Jen, it’s growing her platform and creating contents. It is essential to be careful what we rule out and decide what’s possible so as not to limit ourselves on what we’re capable of doing. ----------- Catch up with Dr. Jen Caudle by visiting him at www.drjencaudle.com or contacting her at info@jennifercaudle.com You can also follow them on social media at:  Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/DrJenCaudle  Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/drjencaudle  LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjencaudle  Twitter - https://twitter.com/DrJenCaudle See you on the next one! Episode 26: Healing From Intergenerational Trauma As A Community W/Jared Washington
SHOW NOTES: There’s a resistance to having a conversation about intergenerational trauma in the black community. A conversation needs to happen between black men and black women. We need to communicate and to heal -- Highlights from the conversation: JARED WASHINGTON ● Founder and owner of Hope LLC ● Licensed Professional Counselor. He has a Master of Art in Clinical Mental Health Counseling Master’s of Art in Clinical Mental Health Counseling ● Utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as his primary theoretical approach for depression, bipolar disorder, stress management, substance abuse, racial identity and trauma, life transitions, trauma and men’s issues. ● Author of “Intergenerational Trauma and its Impact on Black People in America” THE IMPACT OF TRAUMA IN OUR RELATIONSHIPS ● We’ve all experienced trauma. That's the baseline from which we operate and interact with people. Intergenerational trauma it’s passed down through different generations. The way we think or how we express ourselves can be defined by it - and it’s all based on experiences our ancestors went through. Slavery didn’t happen long ago, and it’s still a fresh memory from systematic oppressions. ● The violence that came before our time - men having to watch their wives get assaulted, brutality, kids being taken away, lack of rights and protection, and much more - created a friction between black men and black women. The dynamics in the relationships are affected by this, and children are exposed to problems and discussions with delicate topics. ● Traumas are passed through epigenetics, story learning, and through learned behaviors. What is present? Beating, comprehension, emasculation, shared responsibilities, absence, a caring relationship…? Experiences while growing up can inflict traumas or complexes. ● It’s necessary to talk about these experiences as a community. That’s how healing starts. That’s how an inherited cycle can stop. That’s how there’s a shift in the confidence and self esteem of black men being built on the backs of black women. ----------- Social Media Instagram handle https://www.instagram.com/j.washington.hope/ LinkedIn handle https://www.linkedin.com/in/jared-washington-92727063/ ------ See you on the next one! Episode 24: Healing Our Past Traumas w/ DR. Alauna Curry
SHOW NOTES: Traumas are something most of us have to live with. Is almost impossible to avoid damaging, painful experiences in our lifetimes. However, how do we deal with them so they don’t take over our lives? Should we set them aside, or should we confront them? Dr. Alauna Curry opens our eyes and gives us some insight on how our brain works in today’s conversation. -- Highlights from the conversation: DR ALAUNA CURRY ● Board-Certified Psychiatrist, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of complex psychological trauma and related mental health conditions. ● Founder of Dr. Alauna Trauma Recovery Institute, an educational practice geared towards education the public about how to heal themselves ● None of us get a good education about emotions, despite it being something very basic for us humans. TRAUMA VS US ● We live long lives in this world. It’s very difficult to always avoid painful experiences , which can later develop into traumas. Traumas usually restructure the way we see the world. It’s important to understand that we are running on our primitive brain systems. They still dominate the way we think of, talk about, feel, and interpret the world that surrounds us. When trauma poisons our system, it takes over our vision of the world. ● Trauma creates a predictable pattern of changes in our brain system. When we identify those patterns and find the correct tools and skills, we can regulate the way trauma affects us. We can create our own reality. ● An important first step is to recognize and accept your traumas. Dismissing them won’t let you reprogram the way you think, as you will be stuck in your own ways. Think of it as this: You are addicted to sugar, and you notice that you are gaining some unhealthy way. You refuse to acknowledge that the food you are eating is the one causing this, so you continue to consume it. Accepting the problem and willing to change is the only way to stop the consequences. ● Humans are built with a gigantic blind spot for ourselves. We see what everybody else is doing and we are quick to say how wrong they all are. We have solutions, suggestions, advice, etc. But when it comes to ourselves, crickets. ● The ability to regulate ourselves comes to self-acceptance and education. Thoughts have real power. Emotions are always present, but it’s possible to regulate them by controlling out thought processes. We have the ability to make ourselves better. ----------- Website Address https://www.dralauna.com Social Media Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/dralauna Instagram Profile https://www.instagram.com/dralauna/ Twitter Profile https://twitter.com/dralauna ------ See you on the next one! Episode 22: The Road to Freedom w/ Dr. Alixis Rhodes
Today’s conversation goes around taking ownership of our culture, acknowledging our roots, and giving back to the environments that formed us so we can have an opportunity to break free from the oppressive, manipulative system that we currently run in. -- Highlights from the conversation: DR. ALIXIS RHODES ● She has a doctorate in Applied Clinical Psychology, a master’s degree in Forensic Psychology, and a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice ● One of the founders of No Black Girl Left Behind (NBGLB). A place to connect, uplift, inspire and promote black women self-care. ● Author of “The Rhode to Success” ● Experienced traveler ● LIBERATION FROM AN OPPRESSIVE (WHITE SUPREMACIST) SYSTEM The immersion of the black community in the white supremacy culture has become more and more evident. Colonization seems to have persisted despite the years, and it’s still alive in all of our mindsets. How do we begin to disconnect ourselves from that? We need to start creating our own systems, even within the current structure, in order to break free. ● We need more doctors, more artists, more vocal agents. And then we need them to go back to our community. It’s important to keep present that we are all products of our communities, and it’s fair to retrieve back to them. ● We can't continue to rely on the system to teach us. The system is also polluted with a white supremacy mindset. We do need to be aware of the socio political structures of the oppressed, and how we are constantly manipulated. Giving resources to our communities to create educated individuals is the only way to break the cycle. ● Educating the next generation should be a priority. With the current tools, they learn faster and become very rational beings at an earlier age. Let’s teach them about representation, about culture, about being proud of who they are, and embrace the differences that make them unique and special (hair, skin color, culture, etc). ● We can also look for allies outside of our communities. There will always be white, latin, asian people who are very into the anti-racism culture. They will advocate with us, they will reject white supremacy with us, they will support our businesses and causes with us. ----------- Social Media Website alixisrhodes.wixsite.com/website Instagram handle www.instagram.com/traveling.psychdoc/ ------ See you on the next one! Episode 20: De-stigmatizing Mental Health in Black Men
The hip hop and healing combination is back! We will continue our conversation with B. Russ about empowering mental health in creative ways. Let’s break the stigma! -- Highlights from the conversation: B. RUSS ● Rap artist and mental health advocate ● His goal is to make content to normalize mental health for everyone, especially for black men who tend to feel alienated or alone in this subject. ● He shares his journey to inspire people to take action. CURRENT CONVERSATIONS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH ● Millennials grew up in an environment with a lot of stigma surrounding depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses. There’s a difference with Gen Z, that started having these conversations more explicitly and earlier. ● Social media has a role with enabling conversations about topics that were considered taboo. Stories are shared, points of view and advice are given, communities are formed. ● Structures are taking place, and now as a society we are more aware of issues that were invisible not so long ago, such as the struggle of being a woman, or black. People are getting to know definitions, mindsets, and realities beyond their privilege and judgements. ● With the sharing of information, people are taking mental health and mental illnesses more seriously. There was a detachment due to not being able to sympathize with vague concepts such as a “panic attack”, which wasn’t considered as the same level as ‘diabetes’ or ‘heart attack’. ● Black men face some issues when opening up to their vulnerability. First, they were taught to deal with emotional hardships by downplaying them, because there’s the belief that “men have more important stuff to deal with” such as paying debts, putting food on the table, giving your kids an education, etc. ● We all do the best we can with the resources that we have, and we are in a position in which we can break the cycle of “toughing it out” and accept that we are not perfect, that sometimes we need help, and that it’s ok. ● It’s important to remember that we may all be struggling with something. Try to be as kind as possible with those around you, even if they are not so much. If you can help someone, do it. If you can sit and listen to someone, do it. That may be the difference that pushes them to break the “I don’t need help” cycle for themselves. ----------- Social Media Instagram handle https://www.instagram.com/therealbruss/ ------ See you on the next one! Episode 16: Getting the Root of the Asian and Black Divide w/ Dr. Jenny Lau
SHOW NOTES This week Dr. Jenny Lau and I took the conversation on a experienced level as we discuss the Black-Asian divide. To find a compromise, the community of colors needed to hold a forum so that everyone could begin to recover and appreciate cultural differences. These senseless actions had to "end" because they, too, are humans. --Highlights from the conversation: DR JENNY LAU She is an Optometrist in a small town in WI Originally from Canada GETTING THE ROOT OF THE ASIAN AND BLACK DIVIDE Being miles away in your origin is a major adjustment considering the differences in culture and skin color. There is always this line boundary between the Black and Asian communities that still an issue that needed to be voiced out and addressed. To heal is to share. Asian Hate Crimes: The trauma it caused for all Asian during the incidents brought an uncomfortable and unsafe feeling in the country they are in. Black Lives Matter: We have seen the incidents of police brutality and all racially motivated violence against black people. Many people made a protest and seek for justice. We all deprived by, what the society told us. But we forget about the emotion that it brought to them. That’s why, regardless of what community you are in, it’s important to check on someone. It’s easy to reach out and check on people if they are okay. Stop looking for the differences, start seeing the fairness that they deserve. However, the question here is; How can we heal from this situation? Stop the stigma. Our soul, our heart and our deeds determine us. We don’t have exclusivity when it comes to our culture and skin colors or whether you are Asian and Black. Stop the culture of hate and instead lift and empower each other. Racism is a decision we made and a perspective we put in our mind. We need to be mature enough to stand solidarity. There is no right or wrong, only a different perspective. Perceptual Position: First position, put your shoes into someone and embody the emotions, thoughts and feelings. Imagine that it is happening to you. Second position, Absorb and look. You will able to see a different perspective. It takes a courage for everyone to open up their own experiences and share it to someone. Healing takes time and that is okay. Episode 14: Faith, Purpose and Intentionality in Every Part of Our Life w/Dr. Keisha
SHOW NOTES: In this week’s podcast, Dr. Keisha Thompson gives us some light about the role faith, purpose, and intentionality play in the journey towards our true path. This introspective talk will help us filter what we should and shouldn’t focus on! -- Highlights from the conversation: DR KEISHA THOMPSON ● Psychologist, author, mentor, motivator. ● Host of the “Misadventures of an Inspired Woman” and “Black and Saved” podcasts ● First-generation immigrant from Trinidad & Tobago Her research agenda is centered around Blackness in the African diaspora FAITH, PURPOSE, AND INTENTIONALITY ● Faith is a foundation. The conviction that everything is going to work out can move you further. Those moments of prayer, when we are listening for guidance, give us reassurance, a sense of purpose, and intentionality. It’s a drive that comes without having to see the outcome, and that keeps you going even when it seems like life isn’t “cooperating”. ● A purpose gives validation to your efforts, and gives you some sense of direction to where you should be going. Without a purpose, you won’t be interested in pursuing or completing anything. ● Once you have all your variables in place, you will be able to filter what is and isn’t for you. Your purpose will bring you joy. ● Intentionality keeps you alert, looking for pathways to fulfill your purpose ● You have to look in your daily life your revelations and confirmations. No huge, very obvious event will show up for you, but subtle little things will guide you to the path you are meant to be. ● Purposes can evolve or even change with time. Sometime we can get attached to things we have already accomplished, or things we didn’t realize weren’t actually meant for us. ● To hear your calling, you should be willing to say yes. Don’t be afraid to open up your mind and look around for enlightenment. Past traumas or even guilt can hold you back from this. Honor your emotions and work on yourself, get to know yourself, and get better. ● Seek for authentic connections and authentic conversations that will help you in your journey. ----------- Website Address https://www.drkeisha.nyc/ Social Media Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/doctorkeisha/ Instagram Profile https://www.instagram.com/dr_keisha/ Youtube Channel www.youtube.com/c/drkeisha ------ See you on the next one! Episode 13: Your Perception is not always your reality
SHOW NOTES: In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about our Perceptions vs Reality. We walk around thinking that what we are seeing and hearing day by day is the stone cold truth, when in actuality it's a version of the truth. It's our filtered perception based on our model of the world that we have created and inherited. Listen to the breakdown of how distinguishing perception can be powerful in manifesting what you want in your life. Episode 12: We Don't Have to Be Every Woman: Knowing When to Take Off Some of Our Hats & Take Care of Ourselves w/Dr. Adaeze Adigweme
SHOW NOTES: This week Dr. Adigweme and I discuss the challenges of wearing and pressures of wearing multiple hats as professional black women, recognizing the symptoms of our inner self saying “enough!”, and the first step towards freedom, mental health, and pursuing our true path. Highlights from the conversation: DR ADAEZE ADIGWEME ● Internal Medicine Specialist with over 12 years of experience ● Physician, coach, healing arts advocate, and alignment activist ● Board President of The Love & Light Institute SILENCING OURSELVES TO PLEASE OTHERS VS EXPRESSION OUR TRUE PASSIONS FOR OURSELVES ● Life can come with a demanding job, long days, and leadership roles. Because of this, you may lose track of who you are as an individual, what you truly enjoy, and even your core values. You may feel the need to hide burnout, due to the fear of being questioned or judged as someone who has no stability. You may feel overwhelmed by anxiety or depression. You are not alone. ● This pressure of being perfect all the time is not realistic. If you are a black woman, the weight is doubled. There’s this self-expected image of the “strong black woman narrative” imposed to us by white supremacy. “We have to be aware, we have to be effective, we have to protect, we have to be in shape, we have to go to church, we have to be likeable.” The last ones to benefit from the “strong black woman narrative”, are black women. ● So, how do we begin to benefit from our own black girl magic? Conditioning has been ongoing for the past 400+ years, so it’s no easy task to turn this into the right side. ● First, pause. Take a deep breath and stop the hustle for a moment. (Yes, it is possible!). One you hit pause, check around yourself and define if what you are doing and where you are going is what you actually, truly want. Are you on the right path, or are you in the path society told you to be and you just obliged? ● Second, determine what you actually want. If it’s not where you are standing, what is it that you desire the most? What do you want to bring to the table? What will be your legacy? If you go after your passion and what really moves you, then your hustle won’t be for the image that you will owe others, but for a mission that’s true to yourself. ● Start getting comfortable with other people's discomfort. Set boundaries. Feel your feelings. Live for yourself and for what really matters to you! ----------- Website Address www.alignandaspire.com Social Media Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/alignandaspire Instagram Profile https://www.instagram.com/alignandaspire ------ See you on the next one! Episode 10: The Importance of Black Male Mentorship for Our Sons
SHOW NOTES: This week Wes Whitsett and I discuss the parallels between male mentorship and parenting, what it involves, and its importance. -- Highlights from the conversation: WES WHITSETT ● Wearer of many hats: Entrepreneurial-Humanitarian, Blue-collar Philosopher, Artistic-engineer, Saw-slinging wood-chucker. ● Figurer of fatherhood ● MALE MENTORSHIP & PARENTING ● When we talk about mentorship, the “let’s sit down and talk” image usually pops to our minds. It’s more than that. It also involves what mentors say and don’t say. Because people that look up to them are watching, and will little by little imitate attitudes, answers, outlooks. This also applies to parenting. ● Model behavior can involve political views, ways of viewing life, reactions to adversities, and even the way a person starts and continues a relationship. ● There’s a lot of discussion about how to be a good mentor/parent/role model. Can it be learned? Is it a born-with skill? Wes believes that it’s half nature and half nurture. ● Being in tune and aware of our spaces and communities is important. As much as one would like to provide an example for mentees/children, the environment will still play an important role, as they can pick up messages and attitudes from external sources. ● Mentors and parents are always able to learn and pick up things from those they teach. Human growth has no limits, and interactions are a way of feeding our experiences (and therefore, our knowledge). But to allow this growth, there has to be openness to new understandings. ----------- Social Media Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/people/Wesley-Whitsett-Jr/100005938891582 Instagram handle https://www.instagram.com/wesdoesit/ LinkedIn handle https://www.linkedin.com/in/wesley-whitsett-wesdoesit-com-80281782/ ------ See you on the next one! Episode 8: The Strong Black Woman is Hurting Us...What to Do About it w/Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo
SHOW NOTES: This week Dr. Omolara and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about the “Strong Black Woman”, and how it’s hurting us in this country and beyond. Highlights from the conversation: DR. OMOLARA UWEMEDIMO ● Board-certified pediatrician, professor, and researcher ● Founder, Advocate and Coach at Melanin, Medicine & Motherhood, an empowered and free space. ● Working with marginalized populations SYSTEMS OF OPPRESSION ● The more I learn about white supremacy, the more I understand that we’ve adopted an internalized racism that’s very present in our society. For example, in systems that are so ingrained, such as capitalism, we can see how black women are undervalued and underpaid. Hiring a black woman is seen on many occasions as a “way” to save money. ● Things like this made us force ourselves to become part of the strong back woman trope, which has three components: Emotional suppression, uber independence, and constant self-sacrifice. When we operate like this, we produce and produce at our own expense, but we don’t always see the results or we don’t feel valued. ● Once we get rid of these symptoms of oppression and forced perfectionism, we can begin to see new possibilities to work on. ● Having a safe space to go for comfort is ok. Falling off again to this “forced toughness” is ok. Learning from experience is ok. What’s more important is to recognize that this is a process, and that we have to be patient. Patient with ourselves so we can heal and avoid passing this on to our children. ● Through our recovery we will also be able to reconnect to ourselves as black women or men. Who we are in the present and how it connects to our ancestry, without being defined by outside views and the need to prove them wrong as a compass for our lives. ● What is it that you truly hold as important? Discard the things that you force yourself to feel are important in order to succeed. When we are not thriving inside, that translates on our path.
