Episode 193: Your Inner Game Creates Your Outer Results w/Dre Baldwin

In this week's Mind Remapping episode, I am joined by Dre Baldwin to uncover strategies to cultivate a winning mindset, develop unwavering confidence, and build the mental toughness needed to thrive in any endeavor. Join us as we discover how to train our minds for success, develop a daily routine that builds discipline and resilience, and use affirmations to change limiting beliefs.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Influence of Thoughts on Water - As humans, composed of approximately 90% water, our thoughts can significantly impact our being and the outcomes we produce.
  • Four Pillars of the Work on Your Game Mindset - Discipline, confidence, mental toughness, and personal Initiative are the principles that guide individuals toward achieving their highest potential to succeed in their personal and professional endeavors.
  • Translating Sports Skills to Business Success - When moving from sports to business, you need to understand how to present your skills in a way that makes sense to others, essentially codifying your expertise for a new audience.
  • Who are the High Performers? - High performers are driven, ambitious, and open to improvement. They're the people who set ambitious goals and work hard to achieve them.
  • The Role of Coaching - Coaches do more than just provide answers; they provide insights by helping people ask the right questions and empower people by addressing the root causes of their problems.

Helpful Resource:

Reframing Failures- Humans have a very fragile relationship with failure but we can always choose to redefine our relationship with it and be able to be mentally resilient.

Notable Highlights:

"Since we are 90% water, the way we think impacts our being and the way we end up producing results."

"Sometimes to fill that gap between what you see, what you hear, and what you know, what you should do is that accountability piece."

Episode 192: A Rebirth: Sheree Carara's Journey with MS

Episode 192: A Rebirth: Sheree Carara's Journey with MS

In this week's Mind Remapping episode, I am joined by Sheree Carara to share the importance of recognizing emotional disconnect, surrendering to the process of healing, and the transformative potential of rebirth therapy. Throughout our conversation, Sheree and I recognized that true healing often begins with a willingness to confront and embrace all aspects of the self. Join us in this illuminating episode as we journey together toward greater emotional awareness, acceptance, and wholeness.

Key Takeaways:

  • Recognizing Emotional Disconnect - When we feel distant from our feelings and inner experiences, being honest with ourselves about our situation is the first step to reconnecting with our emotions.
  • Helping People to Heal - The healing you acquire should not only cultivate a thankful heart within yourself but also extend that gratitude outward and be a source of healing and support for those around you.
  • The Courage to Surrender - Surrendering frees us from the burden of trying to control everything and allows us to trust our inner resources to handle any challenges amidst uncertainty.
  • Being a Master of Your Emotions - When you're the master of your emotions, you can maintain inner peace even in the face of chaos and approach challenges with a clear mind and an open heart.

Helpful Resource:

Rebirth therapy focuses on helping individuals detoxify their emotions and release past traumas, allowing them to experience personal transformation and healing.

Notable Highlights:

“In our society today, in general, everybody is so disconnected from emotion, disconnected from our bodies and experiencing our bodies and we're disconnected from each other.”

“When I finally surrendered and just let go of needing to know this has to be fixed, I was able to get the clarity, strength, and courage to get the divorce.”

“What we know is, that trauma lives in the mind, but trauma lives in the body, and the emotions are in the body.”

Episode 191: Rediscovering your Purpose w/ Dr. Cassandra Dunbar

Episode 191: Rediscovering your Purpose w/ Dr. Cassandra Dunbar

In this week's Mind Remapping episode, I am joined by Dr. Cassandre Dunbar to share with you the importance of rediscovering your purpose and how we can bridge the gap from health to wellness. Dr. Dunbar emphasizes that wellness is a journey of constant rediscovery and that our purpose is innately within us. Buckle up and learn with us as we explore how to find and nurture your purpose, and understand the role of acceptance and flexibility in personal growth.

Key Takeaways:

  • To Thrive and Not Just Survive - Life is not just about getting through each day but about thriving in all aspects—physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially.
  • How To Get Still - In a world that often values productivity and constant activity, getting still can be a powerful tool for finding balance, peace, and purpose in our lives.
  • Going Back To Your Childhood - The practice of reflecting on what you enjoyed and were good at as a child can help guide you in rediscovering your purpose in life.
  • The Beauty of Flexibility - Just like kids who can easily switch from one activity to another, we should be flexible in life. If one plan doesn't work, we can try another without feeling stuck.

Helpful Resource:

When we accept our current situation, it doesn't mean we're satisfied with it. It just means we acknowledge it and can work with it to move forward.

Notable Highlights:

“Life is a discovery and a constant rediscovery too.”

"People with less external resources can still end up thriving."

"The resources and the tools to thrive are not always outside you. It's coming to remember and unlock the resources and the tools inside of you."

"The hustle and bustle of our lives make us silence our inner voice, inner wisdom, inner intuition, and it makes us seek outside for these tools which are inside."

"As we think about changing the world, like we can start within our families, home, and workplace and create ripple effects."

"We need to allow our purpose to evolve."

About Dr. Cassandre Dunbar

Dr. Cassandre Dunbar wears many hats. She is a mother of two young boys, a medical doctor, a wife, an educator, a wellness writer, and the host of the Be Well, Sis Podcast. Dr. Dunbar is deeply dedicated to promoting wellness and self-care among Black millennial women. Her journey began after completing medical school, where she realized a significant disparity between her education and the true essence of wellness. Episode 190: The Value of Naming Your Emotional Experience

Episode 190: The Value of Naming Your Emotional Experience

In this week's Mind Remapping episode, I will share with you my journey of waking up in an uncomfortable emotional space and how I overcame it by naming and acknowledging my emotions, creating a safe space to express them, and truly listening to my body. You will also learn of the harmful myth of leaving your feelings at the door and the impact this mindset can have on our relationships and well-being.

Key Takeaways:

  • Leave Your Feelings at the Door - Though there are some life instances wherein we have to table our feelings, we must prioritize emotional health by finding healthy ways to process and express our emotions in the long term.
  • Communication Beyond Words - Communication is more than just the words we speak because it includes our body, emotions, and sensations.
  • Naming Our Emotional Experience - The earlier we can recognize that something is happening that we need to take notice of, the faster we can begin to explore the emotions we’re feeling.
  • Consult the Feelings Wheel - Getting to the root of your emotions will allow you to understand and know how to take care of yourself.
  • Expanding Your Emotional Fluency - It involves not only becoming more aware of our own emotions but also learning how to navigate and express them in a way that promotes healthy relationships and emotional well-being.

Helpful Resource:

Listening to Your Body - Our bodies are incredible instruments of communication. They often convey our emotional states long before our minds can fully process them. The ability to interpret the signals our bodies send us is a powerful tool for emotional intelligence and self-care.

Notable Highlights:

“Oftentimes when we don't name our emotions, when we don't honor what's going on with ourselves, it will impact the people around us.”

“Oftentimes, what we can't name, we often dismiss or try to push away.”

“When you name your emotional experience, it gives you access to what you need to do next to take care of yourself.”

“If you don't take a moment to honor and name the experience that you're having, then you will end up pushing through and the impact of your experience will often bleed on others.”

“Some people shy away from positive emotional experiences because they're so used to negative emotional experiences that positive emotional experiences feel foreign.”

Episode 189: The Spousification of Black Males and the Impact of Being in a Love Relationship with Len Sturdivant

Episode 189: The Spousification of Black Males and the Impact of Being in a Love Relationship with Len Sturdivant

In this week's Mind Remapping episode, Coach Leonard joins me to discuss how parents can prevent emotional incest, set healthy emotional boundaries with their kids, and talk about feelings without making them feel responsible for adult emotions. Buckle up as we explore this crucial aspect of parenting and learn practical strategies for promoting healthy emotional development in our kids.

Key Takeaways:

  • Emotional Incest - A situation where a child is placed in a role of emotional support usually reserved for a spouse.
  • Setting Boundaries - Parents should clearly communicate what is appropriate and inappropriate in terms of emotional expression and interaction with children.
  • Gender-Specific Roles - The same-sex parent plays a significant role in shaping a child's understanding of gender roles and relationships.
  • Breaking a Pattern Through Conversation - An honest and open conversation between parents and children is crucial for breaking the pattern of emotional incest.

Helpful Resource:

The three-step approach of awareness, acceptance, and action can be a powerful tool for addressing challenges with a sense of mindfulness.

Notable Highlights:

"Mama was always harder on the daughter than on the son if dad was not in the picture, that spousification thing is starting to gel now."

"It's important to understand that as that vacuum takes place because of a parent's absence, it's not appropriate for a child to take care of that."

"Crossing the generational line comes from wanting to fix or solve the problem so that you can feel better."

"It's ok for a parent to show emotion in front of their child so long as they're not putting the responsibility on the child for them to make their child responsible for fixing."

"A child's first language is energy."

"The most important person usually in the child's life is the same sex parent."

"Denial is a river in Egypt, but it's also a thing we tend to do when we feel convicted."

Episode 188: Holding Space for the Complexity and Contradictions of Trauma

Episode 188: Holding Space for the Complexity and Contradictions of Trauma

In this week's Mind Remapping episode, I will share with you the complexities and contradictions that come with trauma and how we can embody the art of holding space for these complexities. Buckle up as we discover how trauma responses differ among individuals and how empathy, understanding, and emotional intelligence can foster healing and help us make a difference.

Key Takeaways:

  • Complexity of Trauma - Everyone probably carries some trauma that lives differently in different people and looks differently as it manifests in behavior and communication.
  • Trauma Responses - It is the body and the mind's signal to us that there is physical, psychological, emotional, or social danger or threat.
  • Acknowledging Multiple Truths - Let’s begin holding space for two things that can be true and let go of the scarcity thinking that if one person is right, the has to be wrong.
  • Honest Communication - Our society needs to advocate for honest communication because when it’s done in the right way, it is very useful.
  • Access to Empathy - Instead of only seeing things from our own perspective, we can gain empathy by stepping back and observing interactions from a neutral standpoint.

Helpful Resource:

Holding space helps us navigate the complexity of trauma as we allow other people's harm to be valid and still not invalidate our own experience.

Notable Highlights:

“Almost everyone probably carries some trauma. You can't have lived a life and not been impacted.”

“The belief sets up the view of how people see things, communicate, receive communication, how they experience emotion or not, and how they dissociate from emotion.”

“When people are responding from trauma, oftentimes they're in tunnel vision.”

“Both people can be correct in certain ways and manners.”

“Acknowledging another person's harm does not invalidate the trauma that you've experienced.”

“The reaction from the wounded place is not the most powerful reaction and it can be harmful. On the other hand, recognizing the wounded place is powerful.”

Episode 187: Coaching - What it is and What it isn't with Dr. Kimmy Reynolds

Episode 187: Coaching - What it is and What it isn't with Dr. Kimmy Reynolds

In this week's Mind Remapping episode, I am joined by Dr. Kimmy Reynolds to share with you what truly coaching is and what it isn’t, and how to effectively empower coaches to adapt to their client’s unique needs. Tune in as we explore the keys to unlocking your potential and transforming your approach to coaching, sales, and life.

Key Takeaways:

  • Coaching Relationship - Coaching is a partnership between two people wherein a coach helps the other facilitate movement.
  • Expanded Listening - Coaching involves a form of listening that goes beyond just words, diving into the non-verbal cues and underlying thoughts.
  • Powerful Questions - Asking powerful questions helps uncover deeper values and thoughts that clients may not express directly.
  • Coach Training - The right training unlocks a blind spot in listening and asking powerful questions.
  • Frameworks and Self-trust - Frameworks bring psychological safety that fills people's need to feel safe.
  • Internal Safety - To be able to observe our work as coaches from a neutral place, it all has to start within yourself that you don't need anything from your clients.

Helpful Resource:

Anchoring confidence in coaching is a valuable tool for enhancing effectiveness and creating a supportive environment for clients.

Notable Highlights:

"Coaching is misrepresented in a way that a coach tells a person what to do, but that is not coaching. It is a partnership between two people."

“Framework bridges where your clients are and where they want to be. People want a roadmap, they want to know where they're going, and they need that structure to feel safe.”

About Dr. Kimmy Reynolds, MD

Dr. Kimmy is a double Board-Certified Pediatric Hospitalist and CEO of The Doctor Coach School. She first built her business as a Procrastination Coach, helping professional women break the cycle of self-sabotage so that they could level up their lives after she was able to push through procrastination and develop systems and processes to overcome her own overwhelm.

helping women doctors master their messaging and learn how to sell. She was able to help several of her clients develop thriving coaching businesses and sell high-ticket, high-impact coaching.

This led to the creation of The Doctor Coach  School. DCS is for doctors who want to learn the mindset, belief-set, and strategies to build a thriving coaching business that is rooted in purpose. Dr. Kimmy believes that the only way to fully master coaching is to coach lots of clients, and the only way to create lots of clients is through confident selling.

Episode 185: How the Insider-Outsider Paradigm Threatens Psychological Safety w/ Noah Prince

Episode 185: How the Insider-Outsider Paradigm Threatens Psychological Safety w/ Noah Prince

SHOWNOTES:

In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by Noah Prince, and we delve deep into the crucial topics of psychological safety and the insider-outsider paradigm. We discuss how these concepts intersect within organizational dynamics and personal relationships, shedding light on the importance of creating inclusive environments where everyone feels valued and respected.

The conversation begins with an exploration of the exodus witnessed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and racial justice protests, where many professionals, particularly women and people of color, opted for remote work and entrepreneurship due to concerns about psychological safety and equity in traditional workplace settings.

Dr. Maiysha and Noah dissect the performative nature of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, emphasizing the need for genuine introspection and systemic change within organizations to foster true psychological safety. They highlight the role of leadership in setting the tone for organizational culture and the imperative of creating safe spaces for learning, growth, and making mistakes.

Drawing parallels between organizational dynamics and personal relationships, they stress the importance of practicing empathy, active listening, and self-reflection to cultivate psychological safety in all aspects of life. They tease an upcoming collaborative training initiative aimed at merging the insider-outsider paradigm with psychological safety training to enhance organizational culture and effectiveness.

I encourage you to apply the insights gained from this episode not only within your professional life but also within your families, communities, and personal growth journey. Noah and I invite your engagement if you're interested in transforming your culture and improving overall well-being and effectiveness, whether as an individual or as part of an organization. Let's embark on this journey together towards creating inclusive environments and fostering psychological safety.

Episode 184: The Information Black Hole; Moving from Talking About to Taking Action

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we delve into the topic of The Information Black Hole. How to move from talking to taking action.

Dr. Maiysha draws from her experiences as a coach and organizational consultant to identify the common tendency termed "analysis paralysis" observed in individuals navigating their careers. Through a personal example of her journey into real estate investing, Dr. Maiysha highlights the trap of endlessly seeking information without taking decisive action. There's a critical point where continuous learning must transition from conceptual understanding to practical application.

I emphasize the significance of moving from theory to action, drawing insights from my experience in real estate, and extending the discussion to address broader career changes and transitions.

There are parallels between personal experiences and organizational challenges, particularly in anti-racism, anti-oppression, and trauma-informed communication. The common tendency is to focus on learning concepts without effectively applying them within organizational settings. Leaders need to bridge the gap between understanding the concepts and actively developing personal skills, thereby shaping the culture within their respective domains.

Further, I'll stress the importance of taking action by engaging in hard conversations and practicing new communication and listening skills. Acknowledging the inherent messiness in the process, I'll underscore the necessity of learning from real-time experiences. The discussion will link organizational culture to leadership development, highlighting the pivotal role of leaders in setting the tone for anti-oppression and trauma-informed practices.

In conclusion, do self-reflection on your leadership to identify areas where you may be stuck on concepts and consider reaching out for assistance in bridging the gap.

Episode 183: We Are All Entrepreneurs w/ Dr. Una of EntreMD

SHOWNOTES:
In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by a seasoned entrepreneur and physician, Dr. Una, as she passionately shares insights into how every physician, whether employed or not, possesses the mindset and potential to be an entrepreneur. She emphasizes the importance of questioning conventional beliefs, using the example of money as a tool rather than an inherently good or bad entity. The conversation delves into the significance of financial freedom and its direct link to overall freedom in both personal and professional realms.
Dr. Una challenges the notion that money is only perceived as a problem when one earns it for themselves, highlighting the paradoxical attitude towards wealth within the healthcare space. Drawing attention to the healthcare system's financial structure, she questions why earning money becomes an issue only when individuals strive for financial independence. The discussion unravels the crucial role of entrepreneurship in achieving financial freedom, with Dr. Una underscoring the potential for physicians to leverage their skills and knowledge to create assets and build sustainable businesses.
Throughout the episode, the conversation expands to address the multifaceted aspects of entrepreneurship. Dr. Una advocates for the recognition of personal brand as a valuable asset and encourages physicians to explore various avenues, such as public speaking, podcasting, or consulting, to build their brand. She emphasizes the importance of expertise and experience, reminding physicians that they are already experts in their fields, which can be translated into entrepreneurial opportunities.
Dr. Maiysha and Dr. Una discuss actionable steps for physicians, both employed and entrepreneurial, to enhance their professional lives. They explore strategies for building personal brands, such as networking, social media presence, and podcast interviews. Dr. Una shares the success stories of physicians who transitioned from being employed to entrepreneurs by strategically building their personal brands and, consequently, their businesses.
The significance of treating one's career as an asset, drawing from Dr. Una's own experiences and the lessons she learned from a physician attempting to sell an unstructured practice. The importance of viewing a business as an asset capable of functioning independently is emphasized, challenging physicians to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset for long-term success.
To empower listeners further, Dr. Maiysha and Dr. Una touch upon the resources available through EntreMD, Dr. Una's platform dedicated to supporting physicians in their entrepreneurial journeys. They discuss the EntreMD podcast, the EntreMD Method book, and the EntreMD Business School, offering invaluable resources for physicians seeking to thrive in entrepreneurship. Dr. Una invites listeners to explore these resources and take a proactive step towards transforming their careers and financial well-being.

Episode 182: What Most People Miss About The Importance of Psychological Safety

Episode 182: What Most People Miss About The Importance of Psychological Safety

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we delve into the topic of What Most People Miss About The Importance of Psychological Safety.

Dr. Maiysha discusses the four stages of psychological safety outlined by Dr. Timothy Clark: feeling safe to be included, safe to learn, safe to contribute, and safe to challenge. Starting with the importance of feeling included, she explores the impact of inclusivity in personal and professional settings, shedding light on the initial guardedness that diminishes when one feels included.

Moving on to the need for a safe space to learn, Dr. Maiysha examines the importance of making mistakes and learning through trial and error. She discusses the adverse effects of criticism and perfectionism on our ability to learn and grow. Exploring the connection between feeling safe to contribute and fostering creativity, she delves into how constant criticism and negativity can suppress one's ability to contribute meaningfully.

Dr. Maiysha highlights the broader impact of psychological safety on mental health, job satisfaction, and overall engagement within organizations. Additionally, she discusses the vital link between feeling safe to contribute and the willingness to challenge the status quo, emphasizing the role of psychological safety in promoting growth and creativity.

Dr. Maiysha stresses the responsibility of leaders to set the tone for psychological safety in organizations, communities, and households. She discusses how leaders play a crucial role in shaping the culture and influencing the psychological safety of those around them.

Encouraging listeners to assess their environments, she provides practical advice on changing communities or initiating conversations around psychological safety. Dr. Maiysha explores the often-overlooked aspects of non-verbal communication and how they contribute to creating a psychologically safe space.

In conclusion, she wraps up the episode by reiterating the holistic nature of psychological safety, extending beyond a mere buzzword. Dr. Maiysha encourages you to reflect on your own experiences and actively cultivate safety in your respective spaces.

Episode 181: Reconnecting to Our Humanity w/ Mickey Feher

Episode 181: Reconnecting to Our Humanity w/ Mickey Feher

SHOWNOTES:

In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by Mickey Feher, owner of Mindset Maps, to dive deep into the intricacies of reconnecting with our humanity. Mickey, an immigrant with a rich background in corporate and personal development spanning 25 years, shares his insights into the fascinating world of mindset and the pivotal role it plays in shaping our lives.

We explore the essence of humanity, masculinity, and femininity, unraveling the threads that weave through our diverse experiences. As an immigrant in the United States, Mickey reflects on his unique perspective and the differences he observed, sparking a profound interest in understanding humanity and the underlying mindset that influences our interactions.

Mickey sheds light on Mindset Maps, an institute he co-founded with Robert B. Dilts, designed to visualize and understand mindset through an online inventory and map. We delve into the significance of mindset in personal and professional growth, highlighting its impact on achieving our goals.

Mindset's Impact on Humanity:

Understanding and shaping our mindset is pivotal in navigating the complexities of humanity and influencing our perceptions of masculinity, femininity, and the world around us.

Difficult Conversations as Catalysts for Growth:

Difficult conversations are not roadblocks but pathways to deeper connections. Embracing vulnerability and honesty in these dialogues fosters personal and relational growth.

Mindset Maps for Personal and Professional Growth:

Mindset maps, introduced by Mickey Feher, provide a visual tool for individuals to explore and understand their mindset. Shifting focus from expecting others to change to personal agency is emphasized for positive transformation.

Lean into discomfort for relationship building:

Building meaningful relationships requires leaning into discomfort and embracing curiosity. Honoring differences while remaining sensitive creates a space for genuine connection.

The Curious Mindset:

Cultivating a curious mindset allows for a shift in perspective. Instead of seeing differences as obstacles, viewing them as opportunities to learn and connect fosters a richer human experience.

Empowerment Through Personal Agency:

Recognizing personal agency is crucial for change. The solution to relationship challenges begins with self-reflection and a willingness to shift one's own mindset rather than expecting external changes.

The Transformative Power of Difficult Conversations:

Difficult conversations, often feared, are revealed to be transformative. They serve as the foundation of relationships, offering opportunities for self-discovery, growth, and shared understanding.

Mindfulness in Relationships:

Mindfulness in navigating relationships involves being present, acknowledging differences, and approaching conversations with respect and sensitivity.

Episode 180: How Emotional Intelligence Mitigates Harmful Communication

Episode 180: How Emotional Intelligence Mitigates Harmful Communication

SHOW NOTES:

In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about how emotional intelligence mitigates harmful communication. As we explore emotional intelligence, I want to emphasize its timeless nature and often overlooked significance, both at the organizational and individual levels. Even as awareness of emotional intelligence grows, the hustle and bustle of daily life often leads us to default to our primal instincts. In these moments, the ability to create a pause between instinct and reaction becomes crucial. Emotional intelligence, or what I like to call emotional fluency, comes into play here.

Let's zoom in on emotional regulation, a key component of emotional intelligence. This skill involves inserting a pause between experiencing an emotion and reacting to it. Unchecked reactions can lead to significant harm, be it physical, emotional, or psychological. In personal relationships, the absence of this pause can result in emotional and psychological harm, especially in contexts like parent-child relationships or intimate partnerships. It's essential to understand that modeling emotional regulation is crucial for the next generation, and many of us may not have learned this skill in our formative years.

Disagreements are inevitable in any partnership or business collaboration. However, these disagreements need not escalate into harmful communication. I often speak about psychological safety, particularly within organizations, and the harm that arises from an inability or unwillingness to emotionally pause and regulate oneself. I address the privilege some individuals may have in expressing their emotions without consequences and the need to hold everyone accountable for their emotional expressions.

From a generational standpoint, I share my personal experience growing up with parents from the baby boomer generation, where emotions were often felt but rarely discussed. The lack of context for emotional regulation during my upbringing contrasted with a professional environment where some could freely express their emotions in harmful ways. Whether one emotes outwardly or internalizes emotions, the ability to recognize and regulate them becomes paramount.

Techniques such as counting, taking a breath, or stepping away can create a crucial pause between emotion and reaction. The importance of personal anchors or phrases tailored to individual preferences is highlighted. I stress the significance of proactive brainstorming to be prepared for emotional situations, ensuring one stays ready to regulate emotions effectively. Communication, both verbal and nonverbal, underlies everything, and prioritizing the development of emotional intelligence is key for personal, communal, and organizational growth.

Episode 178: The Way in Which We Listen Can Cultivates or Destroy Psychological Safety

Episode 178: The Way in Which We Listen Can Cultivates or Destroy Psychological Safety

SHOW NOTES:

In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about how the way in which we listen can cultivate or destroy psychological safety. Recently, I've been diving deep into the realm of psychological safety, exploring a space where the freedom to express, make mistakes, challenge, and feel included converges, as Dr. Timothy Clark outlines. Today, I want to shift the focus to how our listening habits can either nurture or erode the sense of safety in our relationships.

As we explore the creation of psychological safety, it's essential to acknowledge that emotional safety is also a key component. I'm eager to discuss how our listening techniques play a pivotal role in this process. Typically, we listen with the intent to respond, judging and assessing, which can lead us to be mentally absent during a conversation. Even when we appear engaged externally, our internal filters can be detected, influencing the speaker's perception of our attentiveness.

One crucial aspect is nonverbal communication, where our body language, facial expressions, and eye movements subtly convey our level of presence. In my coaching trainings, I conduct an exercise to demonstrate how intentionally breaking rapport during a conversation can significantly impact the speaker, even in a controlled environment. This highlights the power of nonverbal cues in either opening or shutting down a conversation.

Interrupting is another common behavior that can make individuals feel unheard and unimportant. Additionally, listening through our own judgmental filters rather than understanding the deeper commitment behind the communication can hinder constructive dialogue. Actively listening for the speaker's commitment and intention can lead to responses that foster understanding and appreciation.

Moving beyond personal relationships, effective listening has broader implications for organizational leadership. In large groups with varied power dynamics, feeling unheard or invalidated can stifle creativity and collaboration. The way feedback is provided, decisions are made, and biases are communicated all contribute to either opening or closing channels of expression within an organization.

Episode 176: The Importance of Understanding How We Represent Language

Episode 176: The Importance of Understanding How We Represent Language

SHOW NOTES:

In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about the importance of understanding how we represent language. When we speak, we're essentially painting pictures with our words, and these images can differ significantly based on our individual histories, memories, and filters.

As I engage more in this realm, particularly in the areas of teaching, coaching, and working with executives, I've discovered the foundational importance of understanding how our brains process language. It's intriguing to see how we represent language in various ways, leading to potential misunderstandings.

Let's break it down into the primary modalities of language representation—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Each person tends to lean towards one of these in their learning and processing. For instance, if you're a visual learner, you might find that you need to see things to truly understand them. On the flip side, someone who's more kinesthetic might need to physically engage and walk through concepts to grasp them fully. This distinction is crucial, especially in organizational settings. Recognizing and respecting these differences in communication styles can prevent misunderstandings and enhance team dynamics.

I've noticed this plays out not just in the workplace but also at home, especially when it comes to understanding how our kids learn. It's essential for parents to recognize whether their child is more visual, auditory, or kinesthetic in their learning approach. This insight can be a game-changer in how we support and empower our children in the classroom. The same principle applies to ourselves—knowing how we best learn helps in effective self-communication and understanding.

As we explore these communication dynamics, it's also crucial to touch upon trauma-informed communication. Our past experiences and traumas influence how we process language. By being aware of this, we can approach responses and reactions from a different perspective, leading to more empathetic and effective communication. Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 13 minutes! Follow and share these pearls with others.

Episode 175: The Importance of Acknowledging Trauma in the Church w/ Mandii Brown

SHOWNOTES:

In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by Mandii Brown, also known as the relatable counselor, to explore a topic close to many hearts—church trauma and the path to healing within spiritual communities.

Mandii and I delved into the profound analogy of different denominations being like children in a shared spiritual house, all looking at the same sky. We discussed the varied practices and beliefs within the black church, acknowledging the trauma and hurt that can occur and emphasizing the need for honest conversations to facilitate healing.

We touched on the diverse interpretations of teachings, the impact of historical translations, and the importance of questioning belief systems. Mandii eloquently highlighted the significance of acknowledging church trauma and hurt, naming these experiences, and collectively addressing them as a community.

As we navigated this sensitive terrain, Mandii shed light on the complexities of church rules, the creation of denominations, and the challenge of determining whose teachings are being followed. We unraveled the layers of accountability, especially for church leaders, and the necessity of creating safe spaces for dialogue without condemnation.

Our conversation extended to the geographical nuances, dispelling the myth that church trauma is exclusive to the South. Mandii shared her experiences and emphasized the need for validation, transparency, and a collective commitment to healing.

The discussion took an insightful turn as we explored the role of education in the process. Drawing parallels with anti-racism and anti-oppression work, we highlighted the need for consistent efforts, time, and accountability within spiritual communities.

Mandii brought up a crucial point about the delicate nature of addressing church issues without causing offense, particularly in the Southern context. We acknowledged the uphill battle of leadership accountability, emphasizing the role of education in fostering understanding and growth.

Towards the end, we discussed practical steps to facilitate healing within the church. Mandii stressed the importance of validating experiences, creating safe spaces, and encouraging professional mental health support. We explored the concept of faith-based practitioners and the potential for dedicated mental health ministries within churches.

About Mandii Brown

Mandii's journey in the mental health field has been marked by a commitment to addressing church trauma and promoting mental well-being within spiritual contexts. As a seasoned counselor, she draws on her experiences to navigate the complexities of church dynamics, denominational differences, and the unique challenges faced by individuals within the black church community.

Episode 174: Why The Words We Use Matter

Episode 174: Why The Words We Use Matter

SHOW NOTES:

In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about why the words we use matter.

Unpacking a recent incident, I shed light on the contrasting headlines surrounding a Montgomery brawl, emphasizing how the choice of words can significantly shape perceptions. Let's explore how our own filters, shaped by our upbringing, beliefs, and experiences, actively influence and shape the mental images created by the language we encounter.

Drawing your attention to the power of words While words constitute only 7% of communication, their importance cannot be understated. You ought to practice mindful communication, which urges you to observe reactions and responses, especially in group settings. By pausing and asking for feedback like "What do you hear me saying?" we can bridge the gap between our intent and others' perceptions.

Let's shift the focus to you as a listener. You need to be proactive in seeking clarification when a statement raises discomfort. I provide a simple yet powerful question: "Was that your intention?" to foster understanding and avoid misunderstandings. I emphasize the role of language in mitigating conflicts, whether in professional relationships, familial dynamics, or social interactions.

There are challenges to asynchronous communication on platforms like social media, where misinterpretations abound. It’s important to initiate dialogue by asking others about their intentions, fostering healthy communication.

You need to apply these communication tools in your daily life to promote better understanding and connection. By being mindful of the words we use and actively seeking clarity in our conversations, we can contribute to more empathetic and effective communication.

Larry brings a wealth of information to the table and shares invaluable insights on how to stay safe in these real times when critical incidents seem to be on the rise.

Key Takeaways:

The Universality of Trauma:

Larry emphasizes that trauma is like cancer; it doesn't discriminate based on your background or ethnicity. It only needs a living body to act, and its aim is to spread. This underscores the need for everyone to be prepared to deal with traumatic situations.

Seeking Help in Intimate Partner Violence:

When discussing seeking help in cases of intimate partner violence, Larry stresses the importance of available resources and organizations. These resources can offer shelter, safety plans, and support for those who are ready to escape abusive situations. He mentions organizations like PIDV and the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, which can help people in similar situations.

Life-Saving Training:

Larry provides practical advice on the importance of learning life-saving skills. He encourages everyone to take CPR, first aid, and Stop the Bleed training, which can be crucial in times of accidents, emergencies, or violent, critical incidents. These skills can make a significant difference in saving lives.

Importance of Creating a Safety Plan:

Larry discusses the necessity of having a safety plan in place. He highlights the difference between cover and concealment, which is an essential distinction to understand when seeking safety in critical situations. He also touches upon strategies like "run, hide, fight," which empower individuals to take action in times of crisis.

Mental health and trauma:

Mental health plays a pivotal role in violence prevention. Larry stresses the importance of seeking help when dealing with trauma. He addresses the significance of overcoming the stigma associated with mental health and the need to create a plan of action to escape from traumatic situations.

Episode 172: How Trauma Can Show Up as Resistance & Hesitation

Episode 172: How Trauma Can Show Up as Resistance & Hesitation

SHOW NOTES:

In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about how trauma can show up as resistance and hesitancy. I discussed the importance of understanding these reactions through the lens of trauma rather than taking them personally. It was a profound conversation, shedding light on how resistance and hesitation can manifest in both personal interactions and professional settings.

I shared my own experiences from my time in medical school, emphasizing how the pressure to provide immediate answers can lead to anxiety and trauma responses. I explained the differences in processing information between introverts and extroverts, highlighting that introverts often need more time to formulate their responses.

We delved into the significance of observing resistance and hesitation and discussed how to communicate effectively in such situations. I provided valuable communication tools, emphasizing the power of naming and clarifying these reactions. I stressed the importance of curiously leaning into resistance and hesitation to foster deeper, more productive conversations.

Throughout the episode, I shared practical strategies to overcome these challenges, including the significance of returning to the big picture to find common goals and values. I encouraged listeners to notice their own reactions when faced with resistance and hesitation and to share this valuable episode with others who may benefit from this fresh perspective on communication and understanding.

Episode 171: The Power of the Body & Unconscious in Healing Burnout w/ Tanielle Brew

Episode 171: The Power of the Body & Unconscious in Healing Burnout w/ Tanielle Brew

SHOW NOTES

In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by Tanielle Brew, a remarkable transformational coach, about the power of timeline therapy techniques and the profound impact of combining various holistic approaches to empower individuals to heal, release negative emotions, and overcome limiting beliefs.

One of the central themes we explored is the transformative potential of timeline therapy techniques. Tanielle described how these techniques guide individuals on a journey to release old wounds and limiting beliefs that have been holding them back. The beauty of these techniques is that they facilitate the peeling back of layers of unconscious conditioning, enabling people to reveal their true selves and take charge of their lives. We discussed how this process can be incredibly liberating, offering newfound insights and opportunities for personal growth.

Reconnecting with our bodies emerged as a critical component of this conversation. Tanielle emphasized the importance of understanding where we store emotions within ourselves. As high-performing individuals, we often find ourselves suppressing our true feelings, putting on a facade, and further distancing ourselves from our bodies. This disconnection can manifest as physical and emotional turmoil, and Tanielle's work seeks to bridge the gap and restore a harmonious relationship between our mind and body.

Moreover, Tanielle's mission is to help people listen to their body's signals and reestablish trust in themselves. We reflected on the universality of the symptoms experienced by high-performing professional women of color across diverse industries. Tanielle's approach encourages individuals to navigate through their struggles, recognize their shared experiences, and heal forward.

Discovering empowering beliefs was another crucial theme. Tanielle shared an inspiring anecdote about a client who unearthed the belief, "I was made for this." We discussed how these empowering beliefs are often concealed beneath layers of self-doubt and negativity, waiting to be discovered.

In conclusion, Tanielle Brew's innovative approach combines body work, NLP, hypnosis, timeline therapy techniques, mindfulness, and yoga to empower individuals to heal, reconnect with their bodies, and release old wounds. Her unwavering support and guidance enable clients to discover their authentic selves and uncover empowering beliefs that can reshape their lives.

Episode 170: Trauma Aware, Trauma Sensitive, Trauma Informed & Responsive

Episode 170: Trauma Aware, Trauma Sensitive, Trauma Informed & Responsive

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about the intricacies of trauma awareness, sensitivity, becoming informed, and developing responsiveness. These distinctions have been on my mind in recent weeks, especially within the context of various initiatives aimed at fostering equity, health, education, inclusion, diversity, and justice. It's crucial to understand the differences between these four stages in the journey of addressing trauma.

The journey starts with trauma awareness, which is essentially the foundational step. It's about gaining a fundamental understanding of what trauma is and recognizing its presence in our lives. Think of it as putting on a new set of glasses that allows you to perceive trauma more clearly.

Moving forward, we transition into being trauma-sensitive. This phase involves learning how to interact with individuals who have been impacted by trauma. It empowers us to engage with them in a more empathetic and understanding manner.

Becoming trauma-informed is the next milestone. At this stage, we acquire essential skills and knowledge to effectively communicate with and support those affected by trauma. We gain insight into the stress-trauma continuum, helping us navigate the complex landscape of trauma and its consequences.

The final stage in this journey is trauma responsiveness. This phase is all about prevention and the provision of resources. It acknowledges the constant presence of trauma and aims to create structures that mitigate or even prevent traumatic experiences. This is especially relevant for organizations, companies, and communities seeking to support their members effectively.

Throughout this journey, there's a considerable degree of overlap and integration between these stages. Importantly, the process applies at both individual and organizational levels. Furthermore, it's about breaking generational cycles and creating environments that normalize trauma-informed practices, fostering a sense of safety and understanding.

I encourage you to initiate your journey by embracing trauma awareness and sensitivity. Begin by learning what trauma looks like and how to recognize it. If you're interested in delving deeper into this topic, please visit our website. Sharing this episode and leaving comments on your preferred podcast platform would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for tuning in, and I'm excited about the next episode. Wishing you a fantastic day and week ahead.

Episode 168: Looking at Behaviors Differently in Our Kids

Episode 168: Looking at Behaviors Differently in Our Kids

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Looking at Behaviors Differently in Our Kids.

The evolving landscape of parenting styles, drawing a distinction between older generations' parenting methods and those of newer generations like mine. I recognize that our parents had different perspectives and filters for raising us, shaped by their unique survival circumstances. However, I emphasize the shift towards more conscious communication in modern parenting.

There's a powerful tool for effective problem-solving within communication, which I call the SCORE model. This acronym stands for Symptom, Cause, Outcome, Resources, and Effects. I break down each element of this model, emphasizing its practicality in analyzing and addressing seemingly problematic behaviors, especially in children.

To illustrate the practical application of the SCORE model, I share a personal example involving my son's communication where he was struggling to find the right words to express himself and I was having difficulty understanding him, as a result, he becomes frustrated and says, "Forget it, mom." That's why I emphasize the importance of understanding the root cause and desired outcome in resolving communication issues. This example showcases how the model can help parents foster effective communication with their children.

I stress that the SCORE model isn't confined to parent-child interactions but can be applied in various communication contexts, both personal and professional. It serves as a valuable tool for problem-solving and expanding one's listening skills, facilitating smoother interactions and relationships. I encourage listeners to put the SCORE model into practice and share it with others.

ABOUT S.C.O.R.E

Join me in exploring the SCORE model—a transformative tool for understanding behaviors and enhancing communication! As a trauma-informed communication expert, I've seen the magic of this approach in action. 🌿 Let's dive into how we can redefine "misbehaviors" and foster understanding, especially in parenting and relationships.

👣 Understanding the S.C.O.R.E. model:

S: Symptom (Identify the behavior or issue)

C: Cause (Uncover the underlying reasons)

O: Outcome (Define the desired result)

R: Resources (Discover what's needed to achieve the outcome)

E: Effects (Evaluate the impact of the chosen resources)

👶 When applied to parenting, it helps decode a child's behavior and respond effectively. 🤔 Reflecting on what they need and providing appropriate resources can make a world of difference. 🌍

💡 This isn't just for parents! Use the SCORE model to navigate conversations at work, in relationships, and beyond. It's a versatile tool that can transform the way we interact and understand one another.

🔗 Share this post with anyone looking to improve their communication and problem-solving skills. Let's spread the power of understanding and connection. 🌟

Episode 167: The Parts We Don't Talk About w/ Dr. Simarta Brennan

SHOW NOTES

In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by Dr. Simarta Brennan. We delved into the fascinating journey that led Dr. Samara to become an author. Her new book, "The Parts We Don't Talk About," is a compelling read that delves into the world of healthcare from multiple perspectives. What inspired her to write this book was her unique position as both a physician and a patient, having been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and being a mother to a child with congenital heart disease. It's a powerful story of navigating the healthcare system, advocating for loved ones, and finding the path from surviving to thriving.

We also dug deep into the world of multiple sclerosis, a condition that Dr. Samara herself faces. She emphasized the importance of understanding the diversity of how the disease can manifest in different individuals. This awareness can help break down preconceived notions and facilitate better communication between healthcare providers and patients.

Dr. Samara shed light on the mysterious cause of multiple sclerosis, which remains unknown but likely involves a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. She stressed that open-ended and individualized communication is essential for those dealing with the disease.

The emotional aspect of living with chronic illnesses was another significant topic. Dr. Samara highlighted the role of grief in this process, emphasizing that acceptance is a powerful tool in moving forward.

Lastly, we discussed how friends and family can support someone dealing with a chronic illness. It's all about creating a safe space for individuals to share their experiences, being patient, and offering positive and constructive support.

Episode 166: Naming Trauma & Dysfunction is an Access to Healing

Episode 166: Naming Trauma & Dysfunction is an Access to Healing

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about the importance of naming our trauma and dysfunction as a gateway to healing.

Growing up as a proud Gen Xer, I remember hearing sayings like "what goes on in this house stays in this house" or "leave your feelings at the door." These phrases were meant to maintain a sense of privacy and control, but over time, I've come to realize the harm they can cause.

When we sweep our traumas and dysfunction under the rug, whether in our families or organizations, we're essentially hiding the issues, making them invisible, and allowing them to fester. It's like continuously stuffing trash into a full garbage can – eventually, it overflows and affects everyone.

This approach doesn't just lead to a dirty environment; it also damages relationships, safety, and overall well-being. Even those doing the sweeping, often driven by shame or guilt, are impacted by these negative emotions.

The access point to healing lies in naming the dysfunction. By acknowledging the problems, we can take the necessary actions to address them. Whether in a family or organizational context, this step opens the door to various outcomes, from repairing relationships to seeking personal or collective healing.

In both family and work environments, the effects of dysfunction can be far-reaching. Within organizations, it can impact productivity, creativity, and employee satisfaction. Leaders must recognize dysfunction and consider the desired outcomes for their teams and companies. Seeking external perspectives, like consultants or coaches, can be crucial to address blind spots.

So, I encourage you to reflect on what's been swept under the rug in your life, relationships, or organizations. Let's break the cycle of dysfunction and trauma and work towards healthier, happier futures. Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Episode 165: Pronoun Mislabeling and Bringing a Space of Grace w/ Dalia Kinsey

Episode 165: Pronoun Mislabeling and Bringing a Space of Grace w/ Dalia Kinsey

SHOW NOTES

In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, Dalia Kinsey, a fellow black and an expert dietician, joins me. We are discussing Pronoun Mislabeling and Bringing a Space of Grace.

Dalia and I had an amazing behind-the-scenes conversation during her last visit, and the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive. So, we decided to bring her back for another engaging discussion.

Dalia's work centers around BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals, acknowledging the immense impact of chronic stress on their health and well-being. She emphasizes the importance of self-care and stress management, especially for those who face marginalization and discrimination in society. Her work aims to help people enjoy life despite the challenges they may encounter.

Today, our focus is on the complex topic of pronouns and gender identity. Dalia shares her personal journey, including a period when she didn't use any pronouns. We explore the discomfort and challenges that come with mislabeling pronouns and names, highlighting the significance of setting boundaries and learning to respect one another.

We dive deep into the fear of making mistakes, the trauma associated with mislabeling, and the need for grace and understanding when errors occur. We also discuss the broader societal context, where visibility for transgender individuals is often met with resistance. Despite these challenges, we emphasize that inclusivity and acceptance are essential and inevitable.

We reflect on how similar dynamics of erasure and resistance play out in other marginalized communities, such as immigrants. Join us as we navigate the complex terrain of pronouns, gender identity, and the broader quest for inclusivity and understanding.

Episode 164: When Attachment to Purpose Becomes Unhealthy

Episode 164: When Attachment to Purpose Becomes Unhealthy

SHOW NOTES:

Welcome Back To Season 4!!! In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about When Attachment to Purpose Becomes Unhealthy. In the realm of neurolinguistic programming, we often discuss frames – the mental pictures that shape our thoughts and influence our perception of reality. Purpose, too, is framed in various ways by each individual, as we all hold our unique models of what it signifies.

On one hand, purpose can be an immensely motivating force, providing life with meaning and direction. Phrases like "finding your purpose" or "walking in your purpose" can be empowering. However, there's a flip side to this frame. An unhealthy attachment to purpose can lead to feelings of unworthiness when we tie our sense of value to it.

Moreover, an attachment to a singular purpose can create tunnel vision, limiting our awareness of alternative opportunities and routes. This is especially evident when individuals find themselves trapped in a career or environment they once believed to be their purpose, but which no longer serves them.

The key insight here is that purpose isn't static. It evolves and shifts as we progress through life. My personal journey is a testament to this – I once believed my purpose was solely in practicing medicine, but as circumstances changed, I realized that healing, in various forms, was my true calling.

So, instead of viewing purpose as fixed, consider pathways and callings. What are you called to do right now? Embrace change, explore different paths, and allow your purpose to evolve with you. Life is a dynamic journey, shaped by beliefs, values, attitudes, and the evolving collective culture. Embrace this journey with curiosity and an open heart as you uncover the layers of your true purpose.

Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 28 minutes! Follow and Share these pearls with others.

Best Of Season 3 "Episode 127: The Structure Of Missed Communication"

Best Of Season 3 "Episode 127: The Structure Of Missed Communication"

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we revisit when we talked about the Structure of Missed Communication.

It is important to listen to how the words are used while speaking because even in the 7% of communication there’s a lot that is missed because we are managing a lot of information on  a bit by bit basis that our brain has to filter out into chunks that we can handle.

The information is filtered through our beliefs, past experiences, memories, language, environment etc. So people speak in ways that often leave out important information and sometimes making associations that are inaccurate, untrue or not based on evidence or overgeneralizing and that’s why there’s so much missed communication in the 7%

People who tend to look or want to know the bigger picture of things or information most times generalize things and leave out details whereas those who like speaking details tend to assign meaning to things that don’t necessarily equal.

We speak in generalization, deletions, we speak in a cause and effect manner and associations but it is not obvious to the person listening that we are making these associations and since they are listening through their own filters of values and beliefs, therefore so much information tends to get missed.

In order to find clarity and avoid missed communication, we should ask instead of assuming things. We need to be mindful about what we say and when listening we should be mindful of the other person’s filters.

Our self talk is what drives most communication with others.

Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 19 minutes! Follow and Share these pearls with others.

Best Of Season 3 "Episode 133: How Our Trauma Affects Our Relationships w/ Len Sturdivant"

Best Of Season 3 "Episode 133: How Our Trauma Affects Our Relationships w/ Len Sturdivant"

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we revisit when we talked with a fellow Black Therapist who is a male and we are discussing a very important topic related about how our trauma affects our relationships, especially with our partners.

· Can trauma make a person narcissistic?

· How exactly does our trauma affect our relationship with the people we care about?

· What can one do when their partner is living in trauma?

These and a whole lot more await you in this week’s special episode with Len Sturdivant, a love and relationship coach who offers individual, group, couples, and even online consultations. In this episode, he is going to teach us that to love others, we should first truly love ourselves. Today, we will learn about trauma, forgiveness, and healing.

Are you ready to take part of your relationships?

If you don't know how to love yourself first, how can you be in a "love relationship" with someone else? Prior to entering a relationship, a person who does not know how to love themselves will force YOU to take care of them. For you to control your relationship, you must learn to love yourself.

Ways to begin the healing conversation between you and your partner

Recognizing that when you get together, once the love hormone wears off, your eyes open and they can see. And there’s a lot of conversations like our background like what it was growing up for you. If you survive the pre-marital stage, you’re good.

Recognize the trauma you are carrying

Virtual intimacy with each other is tricky. Ever since sex became easier, love became harder to find. In terms of virtual intimacy between men and women, the first thing they go for is to be close. However, it causes us not to see beyond that. Know your partner more by observing how they handle break down, how they can self-soothe, and they handle their emotions right away.

About Len Sturdivant:

Len Sturdivant got his Master’s Degree in Psychology from N.C. Central University and completed 140 hours of doctoral training in marriage and family therapy at Virginia Tech. He conducted several workshops and conferences on relationships and held panel discussions on marriages and divorce. The main focus of his work is on relationship/family coaching and

Best Of Season 3 "Episode 122: You Can Shift Your Belief Slowly or Rapidly, The difference is Just Resistance"

Best Of Season 3 "Episode 122: You Can Shift Your Belief Slowly or Rapidly, The difference is Just Resistance"

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we revisit when we talked about how you can shift your belief slowly or rapidly and the difference is just resistance. In the healthcare practitioner there’s an unspoken curriculum,a kind of messaging which tends to be a belief to many in the healthcare industry.

When we talk about belief change there are beliefs that we’ve had for a long time and some are just new beliefs, now the difference between shifting these kind of beliefs is just resistance and the resistance here represents many things but oftentimes it is all of the little beliefs that happened in between what you want to believe and what you actually believe.

Recently, many people are transitioning from what they do to wanting to start their own businesses and trying to find meaning and purpose outside what they are currently doing. It’s true that you can find meaning outside what you do or find meaning inside what you currently do.

Our beliefs collect around our core values, like a tree the values are the roots, the trunk may represent a big value that an up-shoot of the deep core value, then the branches become the beliefs, the tributary branches are the smaller beliefs and the leaves are somewhat our attitudes. So our attitudes are a collection around our beliefs, our beliefs are a collection around our values.

There’s a notion that acts as a resistance to many which is, you can only change a belief slowly and over time. It is true that you can change belief over time but the “ONLY” part is not true because there are people who’d quit an addiction instantly. The little beliefs that come in between what you want to believe to what you believe are the resistance. There are no unresourceful people, only unresourceful states.

The process of thinking and belief affects the content of belief, therefore when you get to dismantling the process of thinking we impact the content of the results that you want to implement or stop. When you focus on the content, you open up yourself to the internal and external resources to get through the process.

Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 23 minutes! Follow and Share these pearls with others.

Best Of Season 3 "Episode 125: When The Cause is not The Cause But a Symptom"

Best Of Season 3 "Episode 125: When The Cause is not The Cause But a Symptom"

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we revisit when we talked about When the Cause is not the Cause but a Symptom.

We sometimes look at the problems in our lives and while sometimes looking for the cause and end up finding the symptom, but what if those things are problems on the surface of a deeper set of programming?

Those people who have toxic interactions with others tend to ask, what is it that they are that keeps attracting such kinds of people, however underneath that is a tone of self-blame, a ‘what is wrong with me that?’

What is the programming that allows for people who are not healthy for us to be able to interact with us in an unhealthy way or to stay in our lives? What is the belief that drives the programming, attraction, strategy, internal mental sequence or decision making process that attracts us to a certain kind of people?

The things that we see in our minds tend to be the things that we create in our outer world, where attention goes it’s where the energy flows.

We need to think deeply about the recurring problems in our lives that wear different faces, we need to focus on what is the underlying issue. Once we discover the underlying issue we ought to ask ourselves how we want to feel. We also need to figure out what resources we need to solve the problem.

Always examine what is programmed into you that gets you where you are in order to know how to reprogram yourself to the direction you want to go.

Best Of Season 3 "Episode 128: The Importance of Teaching our Kids Tools to Empower their Minds"

Best Of Season 3 "Episode 128: The Importance of Teaching our Kids Tools to Empower their Minds"

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we revisit when we talked about the importance of teaching our kids tools to empower their minds.

In the process of talking about conscious communication and the conversations I have with my kid has made me realize that what I am passionate about is making sure that kids know the tools to empower their own minds because I have seen the impact it has with my kid.

As parents the thing that disconnects us from our kids is the fact that we don’t  create the safe spaces where we can ask questions they really don’t tell us because we probably are too busy taking care of the big things of keeping them fed, educated, safe and clothed.

With social media, bullying and cyberbullying especially in children and also teenagers and young adults may be affected by what others may say about them if they are not grounded on who they are, it’s never too early to begin empowering the belief systems of our children about themselves and teaching them how they can reframe things and empower their own minds so they are prepared when they go out in the world.

To be grounded in oneself and who you are with the tools to communicate gives young people power to be able to choose their battles, choose when they should say something or brush it off, to find the confidence to express themselves transparently, honestly and authentically.

When you reframe a thought, what someone else says, a habit, you change the meaning of it with the context that is applicable.

There’s a difference between teaching a technical tool and modeling it through interaction and conversations and also modeling it in our own lives, this helps our kids pick it up unconsciously as a tool and would replicate that with time.

As parents we must embark on the journey of learning these tools, learning emotional intelligence, listening to our own self-talk and reframing the negative thoughts to empower ourselves.

Despite what most people realize, everything happens through communication. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 18 minutes! Follow and Share these pearls with others.

Best of Season 3 "Episode 126: Everything Is Communication"

Best of Season 3 "Episode 126: Everything Is Communication"

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we revisit when we talked about how Everything is Communication.

Communication isn’t just words and the tone, words and tonality are part but not the totality of communication.

93% of communication happens in what we don’t say, how we say it, tonality, the body language, eye contact, our eye movements, our facial expression, all this is outside the words we use.

Oftentimes people communicate things they don’t intend to without saying a word, or maybe they are saying one thing and their body language or tone is saying something else, this may lead to miscommunication.

Conflicts, death of intimacy, traumas, divorces, all these tend to stem out of miscommunication.

There’s always an unconscious communication(rapport) and we need to be aware of that somatic intelligence of our bodies.

Communicating also involves what we receive, listening is part of communication and when someone is attentively listening it creates a rapport which deepens the relationship.

Written text tends to have missed communication because it is limited and this may cause miscommunication.

We are responsible for our communication therefore we need to be aware and constantly listen to ourselves when communicating in order to impact people in the way we want to impact them.

Best Of Season 3 "Episode 121: Holding Old Mental Models of Each Other Damages Relationships"

Best Of Season 3 "Episode 121: Holding Old Mental Models of Each Other Damages Relationships"

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we revisit when we talked about how Holding Old Mental Models of Each Other Damages Relationships. When people see you for who you used to be, especially our families since they are the people we’ve been around for a long time we tend to drift apart and move from them.

For instance, I had a conversation with my mom who always held me as a shy and reserved kind of person, and she kept repeating that I used to be shy and timid even after having a conversation that  I have never been so.

When such a thing happens it tends to limit the closeness we have with these people because they are so hung up on holding these old models and they can’t see the growth. Seeing a person for who they used to be tends to make the subject feel lonely and frustrated.

People will oftentimes see you for who you used to be even when you are growing, you ought to have a conversation with them and call out what you feel like and what’s going on, especially with the people you think it’s worth keeping. Just like everything, repetition is important to make the conversation sink into their mind.

It’s understandable that people take time to realize that you have moved from what you were to who you are at the moment, so have compassion and patience because they are also dealing with their past traumas. Some people wouldn’t want to see you move past who they used to see you because of their own insecurities.

It’s important to find a community of people who see you for who you are in the present moment. The question is “Who are you holding in the old mental model despite them showing you and telling you that they’ve changed?” “What’s the source of holding others to their old beliefs?” “ Are you willing to move past seeing them according to the old mental model?” Remember, holding the old mental model of others tends to damage our relationship with others since it strains the subject from having conversations with you.

Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 20 minutes! Follow and Share these pearls with others.

Best of Season 3 "Episode 124: Change-Work; Why Changing The Environment Gives Limited Longevity Ended"

Best of Season 3 "Episode 124: Change-Work; Why Changing The Environment Gives Limited Longevity Ended"

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we revisit when we talked about Change work and why changing the environment gives limited longevity ended.

Change is always constant and universal, whether it is change in diet, beliefs, work out etc.

Changing your environment is helpful when you are in that particular environment , so unless you are in that one environment all the time, changing your environment can be very limiting because you still have the same mind and people in that environment.

There are levels to change and changing your environment is the most basic level in change and it is the easiest of things.

Changing your environment to a better one can improve your wellbeing and give you satisfaction and fulfillment in the space, however you have the same un-resourceful behaviors and you’ll experience the same thing you were experiencing before.

When we start moderating our behaviors, which is the next level of change, we start to deepen the level change, which results in another level of sustainability and in turn change in outcome.

On the next level, it’s about looking at what your capacity, your capability to change in a particular way may be limited. At this level you need to learn the skills required for sustainable change.

The next level of change is your “why” which is the level of value, this is where beliefs come, this is where the motivation comes from and this is the core point of change. What’s important to you about what you want to change, now if you align change in your beliefs, change in your skill capacity, change in your behavior and change in your environment then this a deeper level of sustainability in change.

The next level of change is in your identity, who we identify as defines what our values are.

At the next level of change is purpose and mission which tends to change over time depending where we are at that particular time. Our purpose and mission shapes our identity, our identity gives us our values and beliefs, our values and beliefs shape our capacity and capabilities, our capacity and capabilities shape our behavior and our behavior shapes our environment.

Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 27 minutes! Follow and Share these pearls with others.

Episode 163: Using Our Language to Transform Ourselves & Others

Episode 163: Using Our Language to Transform Ourselves & Others

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Using Our Language to Transform Ourselves & Others.

With my upcoming training on neuro linguistic programming (NLP), I've received numerous inquiries about what it entails and how it can benefit individuals as leaders, parents, and in their personal growth. Today, I provide a brief overview of NLP, emphasizing how language can be utilized to bring about profound changes in ourselves and those around us.

The Essence of Neurolinguistic Programming:

Having delved into the realm of NLP for over a decade, both within my integrative medicine practice and as a coach, I have witnessed its remarkable impact. NLP combines language tools, practices, and patterns drawn from linguistics, neuroscience, and psychology to empower individuals and effect positive change. While language represents only 7% of communication, it encompasses verbal, nonverbal, and kinesthetic forms that influence our experiences and interactions.

Thinking in Pictures:

Our minds naturally think in pictures, creating mental movies that encapsulate our problems, perspectives, and beliefs. Language serves as a means to encode these pictures, forming a bridge between our thoughts and communication. By using language intentionally, we can alter the mental images associated with problems, expanding our viewpoint and uncovering previously unseen solutions. Through this process, known as reframing, we enhance our ability to perceive possibilities and broaden our horizons.

Shifting Perspectives:

One of the fundamental techniques in NLP involves reframing the context or meaning attached to a situation, which, in turn, transforms the internal picture we hold. By helping individuals examine their problems from new angles, we empower them to find their own solutions and reduce attachment to their challenges. Rather than offering direct solutions, we facilitate an empowering journey of self-discovery, leading to greater resilience and personal growth.

Transforming Belief Systems:

NLP offers tools to address inherited or unresourceful beliefs by replacing negative mental pictures with more positive ones. Through rapid transformation techniques and deep release work, we guide individuals in releasing old limiting beliefs and reinterpreting past experiences. This process expands their perspectives and enables emotional regulation, ultimately empowering them to navigate their lives with greater efficacy.

Language as Empowerment:

Language holds immense power in our lives. By harnessing its potential, we can communicate effectively, reframe our experiences, and transform our minds. NLP equips individuals with the tools and techniques necessary to utilize language as a catalyst for personal growth, improved relationships, and enhanced leadership. By consciously choosing our words and shifting internal pictures, we open doors to new possibilities and empower ourselves and others.

Remember, the language we choose has the power to shape our reality and transform our world.

Episode 162: Our Story is Our Superpower w/ Monica Wisdom

Episode 162: Our Story is Our Superpower w/ Monica Wisdom

SHOW NOTES

In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by Monica Wisdom. We delved deep into the power of our personal stories and how they can serve as a pathway to healing, empowerment, and self-discovery.

Exploring Our Wounds and Inherited Patterns: Monica emphasized the significance of understanding our wounds as a crucial step towards healing and growth. By uncovering the clues within our stories, we can gain valuable insights into the challenges we've faced and the patterns we've inherited from previous generations. She highlighted the influence of family values and work ethic, acknowledging their importance while recognizing the need for upgrading and evolving these paradigms.

Loyalty to Self and Authenticity: A powerful revelation emerged as we explored the concept of loyalty. Monica challenged the traditional notion of loyalty to external entities, such as companies, relationships, or traditions, and encouraged a shift towards self-loyalty. We discussed the importance of putting ourselves in the equation and questioning whether our current commitments are truly aligned with our happiness and well-being. By prioritizing ourselves and fostering authenticity, we can create a stronger foundation for personal growth.

Embracing Emotional and Mental Wellness: One striking observation Monica shared was our tendency to focus on perfecting our external appearance while neglecting our emotional and mental well-being. She highlighted the need for self-reflection, examining how we respond to life and cultivating a positive perspective. By engaging in conversations about mental wellness, we can address the underlying issues that hinder our happiness and worthiness. Through this introspection, we can shift our focus from dressing up our lives to addressing the core aspects that truly bring us fulfillment.

The Therapeutic Power of Storytelling: Monica emphasized the therapeutic nature of storytelling, especially as we embark on our healing journeys. As we heal, sharing our stories becomes a transformative process, not only for ourselves but also for inspiring and empowering others. Telling our stories helps us release energy and emotions, relinquishing guilt and shame. It allows us to embrace vulnerability and connect with others on a deeper level, fostering empathy and a sense of shared humanity. Monica emphasized the peace and confidence that come from examining our journeys and acknowledging our strength and resilience.

The Superpower of Our Stories: In our concluding remarks, we explored how telling our stories becomes an act of sharing our power with the world. Our stories reflect our authenticity, embracing both our cracks and shiny parts. We are flawed diamonds, multifaceted and brilliant, and it is through sharing our stories that we truly share our power. Monica highlighted the importance of recognizing our stories as our superpower, as they encapsulate the sum total of who we are, transcending mere accomplishments or possessions.

Episode 161: When Our Past Gets in the Way of Our Progress

Episode 161: When Our Past Gets in the Way of Our Progress

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about When Our Past Gets in the Way of Our Progress; the impact of past traumas on personal progress.

Personal and professional development is an ongoing process, and everyone has their own experiences and struggles with past traumas. Despite my involvement in a business partnership, I have hesitated to legally become a part of it due to my own fears and past experiences. I’ve witnessed the challenges and failures of partnerships in the past, which have influenced my decision to remain a sole owner in her practice.

It’s important to recognize how unconscious trauma responses can hinder personal and professional growth. You ought to identify areas of resistance in your life and career that may be rooted in past experiences. Paying attention to physical sensations and thoughts that arise when faced with opportunities outside of one's comfort zone. By exploring the origins of these resistances, individuals can understand how past traumas may be impeding their progress.

The trauma responses, such as fight, flight, freeze, submit, or fatigue, can manifest in different contexts. Just like my personal experience of freezing and backpedaling when considering a legal partnership, perceiving it as a threat. Taking an observer's perspective, I realize that my own involvement in the partnership may actually be causing harm, despite my initial resistance.

It’s important to seek support from others to address these traumas and blind spots. Whether through working with a coach, therapist, or other professionals, the significance of healing past wounds is to prevent their reemergence and to break generational cycles. By healing the past, individuals can transform their future and contribute to the healing of future generations.

It’s important to reflect on your own experiences and consider how past wounds may be influencing your present actions and decisions.

Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 24 minutes! Follow and Share these pearls with others.

Episode 160: The Habits You Need QUIT holding onto Right Now w/ Dr. Taniqua Miller

Episode 160: The Habits You Need QUIT holding onto Right Now w/ Dr. Taniqua Miller

SHOW NOTES

In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by a good friend and one of my colleagues, Dr. Taniqua Miller. We are discussing her focus on helping women of color quit what they need to quit in life.

· What are the things we need to be quitting?

· What are the things we, as black women and women of color, hold onto that we do not need to hold on to anymore?

· How can I get back to myself?

These and many more await you in this week's special episode with Dr. Taniqua, a board-certified OB/GYN and national-certified menopause practitioner. As a little girl growing up in the Bronx, she learned firsthand the importance of owning your true self. Through her educational platform, TaniquaMD, she empowers women of color to embrace boundless midlife. In this episode, she will discuss QUIT- an acronym she used to help her. Today, we will also learn about her own experiences and challenges regarding self-worth.

Quitting

Most of the time, our self-worth is tied to our achievement; in this world, self-worth is inherited. But when you are living a life, and you realize that a lot of what you are doing is what gets you attention, a lot of what you are doing is what gets you that feeling of worth, it is tough to walk away from that.

Understanding the consequences

So many times, we make decisions about doing things because of what we're afraid others will think. Understanding the consequence of your stay or your go is essential. Sit with that vulnerability to realize that if you walk away, who will you be on the other side? There is always a choice; you just have to understand the consequences of the selection.

Relearning How to Listen to Yourself

When we lean into our intuition, we honor ourselves; we keep the deepest parts of us that know us so well that we know we need them. Sometimes it is tough to see if it's intuition because, for so long, it has been beaten out of us to trust that inner voice. To relearn how to listen to yourself is so powerful and uplifting, and it is like freedom.

We must challenge ourselves to leave things that no longer serve us. Let us quit that, take everything that drives that passion, and put it into something that moves us and makes us feel empowered. The more you start quitting, the more it becomes like a game.

About Dr. Taniqua Miller

Dr. Miller trained in psychology at Yale University and earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. As a little girl growing up in the Bronx, she learned firsthand the importance of owning your true self. Even from a young age, Dr. Taniqua has always been committed to empowering women and girls through pivotal puberty, pregnancy, and perimenopause

transitions. She prides herself on her commitment to supporting women and girls through their reproductive changes and beyond.

Episode 159: Knowing Your Child's Relationship to Structure & Time According To Myers-Briggs Part 4

Episode 159: Knowing Your Child's Relationship to Structure & Time According To Myers-Briggs Part 4

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Knowing Your Child’s Relationship to Structure & Time according to Myers Briggs. We explore the fascinating topic of personality traits and their impact on time management. We delve into the contrasting characteristics of perceivers and judgers, providing insights on how understanding these traits can help parents support their children effectively.

Perceivers vs. Judgers

Perceivers are individuals who thrive on flexibility and adaptability, while judgers prefer structure and organization.

Perceivers often struggle with time management and organization, while judgers excel at planning and meeting deadlines.

Maiysha shares a personal story about her experience as a perceiver and how she found a balance between structure and freedom by allocating specific time for writing chapters.

Nurturing Perceiver and Judger Children

Perceiver children need more accountability and structured when it comes to completing tasks within specific time frames.

Judger children naturally set up structures to ensure tasks are completed on time and may require less guidance.

Parents should be mindful of their children's natural inclinations and provide appropriate support, whether it be additional structure for perceivers or fostering flexibility for judgers.

Children can be unintentional teachers and accountability buddies for parents, as parents learn to adapt and support their children's unique needs.

Episode 158: The Practice of Anti-Racism & Anti-Oppression w/ Dr. Jill Wener

Episode 158: The Practice of Anti-Racism & Anti-Oppression w/ Dr. Jill Wener

SHOW NOTES:

In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by a friend, a colleague, and my partner in Anti-Racism, Anti-Oppression education. We are discussing where we center our work on the practice of anti-racism and anti-oppression in the course of it.

· What is the emotion that I am feeling?

· What dialectics is all about?

· When is that actual bad feeling started?

These and much more await you in this week’s special episode with Dr. Jill Wener, a doctor and a meditator; she teaches tapping and anti-racism and holds retreats and live events. In this episode, she will teach us about the different practices of anti-racism and anti-oppression. Today, we will learn about knowing that these practices are accessible; there are a million different ways to approach them.

The practice of being uncomfortable and recognition of our humanity.

For many people, these conversations of anti-racism, anti-oppression, and working to dismantle misogyny in our society are just very uncomfortable. Still, we can practice being courageous enough to be uncomfortable. The practice of recognizing our humanity and acknowledging our filters and our own biases that we live through and understand. Every time we speak to someone, we are communicating through our filter, and they are listening through their filter; they are telling through their filter, and we are listening through our filter.

Mistakes are not deadly.

In our profession, we are taught that mistakes are deadly, and many times, they can be. But on a day-to-day basis, errors are not fatal. So when we miss what we take, we can always take two and clean up.

Dialectics

An essential tool for Dr. Jill because she can be uncomfortable and still can speak, and those two things do not counter each other. She can hold space for identity- the oppression of a specific identity being worse than hers or having a different experience, and it does not have to be better or worse but being different, and that can also be true.

Just like in self-compassion practices which are also really powerful in this work, there are little micro-practices and formal methods; there are in-the-moment little things, and then there are more extensive practices. Knowing this practice is accessible, there are a million different ways to approach it.

About Dr. Jill Wener:

After 10+ years practicing Internal Medicine in a busy urban hospital, Jill knows firsthand what severe stress and burnout feel like. Amid her emotional turmoil, she was introduced to Conscious Health Meditation, which profoundly affected her well-being. She became a tapping practitioner in 2019 and found tremendous joy in facilitating incredible growth and benefits with her tapping clients. An (always aspiring) anti-racist, Jill is the co-creator of the CME- and SHRM-accredited Conscious Anti-Racism training programs, in which she (along with her business partner Dr. Maiysha Clairborne) combines her insights from her anti-racism journey with her mind-body expertise and her ten years of experience practicing medicine.

Episode 157: Understanding Our Children's Personalities; The Thinker & The Feeler

Episode 157: Understanding Our Children's Personalities; The Thinker & The Feeler

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Understanding Our Children's Personalities; The Thinker & The Feeler - the thinker-feeler polarity within the Myers-Briggs framework.

Thinkers are known for their logical, analytical minds and a preference for making decisions based on rationality and objective criteria. Feelers, on the other hand, prioritize emotional considerations and seek harmony and empathy in their interactions. Understanding these fundamental differences is crucial in nurturing and supporting our children.

We should understand the importance of recognizing and honoring our children's thinker-feeler tendencies. By doing so, we can create an environment that nurtures their strengths and supports their growth. It's essential to provide thinkers with intellectual stimulation and opportunities for critical thinking, while also fostering their emotional intelligence. For feelers, we need to cultivate an atmosphere that values emotional expression and teaches them how to identify and manage their feelings effectively.

We should never confine our children to rigid categories or stereotypes solely based on their thinker-feeler tendencies. Each child is a unique individual, and it's vital to celebrate and embrace their individuality. As parents, our role is to create a nurturing space that respects and appreciates their diverse blend of traits.

Engage in activities that stimulate both the intellectual and emotional aspects of your child's personality. Discuss books or movies that explore complex themes while also delving into the characters' emotions and motivations. By integrating these experiences, we can support the holistic development of our children.

We need to reflect on your own thinker-feeler tendencies and how they impact your parenting style. Understanding your own strengths and weaknesses in this regard allows you to approach interactions with your child in a more balanced and empathetic manner.

Episode 156: Vertical Intimacy Strengthens' Relationships w/ Len Sturdivant

Episode 156: Vertical Intimacy Strengthens' Relationships w/ Len Sturdivant

SHOW NOTES:

In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined once again by a fellow Black Therapist who is male. We are discussing a crucial topic related to how vertical intimacy strengthens our relationship with ourselves and others.

· How well do we communicate?

· What is vertical intimacy?

· What do we need to begin cultivating closeness in the people we want to be close to?

These and a whole lot more await you in this week’s special episode with Len Sturdivant, a love and relationship coach who offers individual, group, couples, and even online consultations. In this episode, he will teach us that if we cannot create intimacy vertically, then we cannot connect with people. Today, we will learn about cultivating vertical intimacy, communication, and healing traumas.

All about Vertical Intimacy.

Vertical Intimacy is the foundation for reciprocity. Reciprocity and resentment cannot live in the same space. We cannot and do not always recognize when someone is bidding for connection, so learning the concept of vertical intimacy is so important. It is also helpful in friendships, parent-child relationships, and the broad spectrum. You must create intimacy vertically to connect with people. When we can love that inner child, we can have those reflections in our family and our community of ourselves, and we can experience that vertical intimacy.

Cultivating vertical intimacy between two grown people.

The first task we need to master is, how do I love myself? We need to re-parent ourselves and do the things that were not done for us early on so that we can begin to address the missing half of us. It would be great if we have a mate to help us re-parent that part of us.

Communication

Meaningful conversation is excellent- not just surface-level conversation- in which you go deep into chat and ask more intimate questions. It does not have to be deeply personal. It will involve some risk, and the risk is the reflection that comes back to you. You are connected when a person can see into you, no matter who they are; then dialogue is possible, and communication is possible.

We have to cultivate the intimacy with ourselves. So when we develop, that means healing our traumas; it means acknowledging them because we cannot heal before we recognize them. We have to be open and willing to look and accept so that we can heal those traumas and those old conversations that have us unable to and unwilling to open up to love ourselves first and then forge that connection with another.

About Len Sturdivant:

Len Sturdivant got his Master’s Degree in Psychology from N.C. Central University. He completed 140 hours of doctoral training in marriage and family therapy at Virginia Tech. He conducted several workshops and conferences on relationships and held panel discussions on marriages and divorce. His work mainly focuses on relationship/family coaching and divorce interventions. He helps couples who want to change how they communicate with each other and move on to the next level.

Episode 155: How Systemic Oppression Impacts Body Image w/ Dalia Kinsey

Episode 155: How Systemic Oppression Impacts Body Image w/ Dalia Kinsey

SHOW NOTES

In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, Dalia Kinsey, a fellow black and an expert dietician, joins me. We are discussing how systemic oppression impacts body image.

· How do you fix your food?

· Where is the part that we can celebrate, and what part of what we are doing doesn't serve us anymore?

· How are things functioning in your body?

These and many more await you in this week's special episode with Dalia, Owner of Kinsey Wellness and Communications. In this episode, she will share how she empowers people to use nutrition as a self-care and personalized tool to reclaim their well-being. Today we will learn about dealing with our relationship with food regarding dieting.

Trusting ourselves is foundational.

How we are treated as children and the messaging we have been exposed to influences our relationship with our body, our relationship with control, our relationship with food, and our ability to trust ourselves. Trusting ourselves is foundational to having a friendly relationship with food.

All about Diet

Dieting has been put forth as a healing tool, something that is going to make you better. When so much research clearly shows that all dieting can do is hurt you. It helps you become obsessed with food, and in the end, it leads to weight gain. It is not that it has never worked for anybody in the world. It is that it only works for some people. What it does successfully do is cause weight gain; it cause more body dissatisfaction.

Ideal Weight as Dominant Culture Norms

People step on the scale daily because weight has become this dominant cultural norm of ideal weight and useless BMI. All these things become background conversations in our heads when we look at our bodies. We have an internal discussion about that, and then it drives our behavior; it drives how we eat: whether we skip a meal or have the meal.

Give yourself more compassion, and understand that there are two things we are trying to hold here: your body is wise, and it is best to let it take the reins, and you are in a pressure cooker, and what is right for you can change over time, and that is OK.

About Dalia Kinsey

Dalia Kinsey is a Registered Dietitian, host of the Body Liberation for All podcast, and author of Decolonizing Wellness: A QTBIPOC-Centered Guide to Escape the Diet Trap, Heal Your Self-Image, and Achieve Body Liberation. Dalia speaks, leads workshops, and provides tailored group and individual coaching.

Dalia owns Kinsey Wellness and Communications, which teaches body-led eating as a mindfulness tool and joy in the way of eating. Her passion is to help people understand that if you feel like your body is not the way you want it to be or feel out of control around food, you have not failed.

Episode 154: The Dangers of the Insider-Outsider Mindset w/ Noah Prince

Episode 154: The Dangers of the Insider-Outsider Mindset w/ Noah Prince

SHOW NOTES:

In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by Noah Prince, a consultant, and a coach. We are discussing the Insider-Outsider Mindset.

· What does it mean to be a white man and a human being?

· Once you understand how you are an Insider, how do you move towards that with responsibility, self-love, and a growth mindset?

· How do we unpack our identities?

These and much more await you in this week’s special episode with Noah Prince. In this episode, he will share more about the culture and knowledge poured into him over his journey. Today, we will learn about the importance of humanity and how we apply it to the people around us.

Co- Liberation

An idea that your liberation is tied to others. Sometimes liberation is presented like many things, as an individual act. An individual can get enlightened, can get aware, can practice, and can be deepened. Still, to Noah and me, liberation is a societal thing where life is connected, honoring, and working to create that sense for each of its members.

The Race

Race itself; skin color is a man-made, one-level concept. It is a white-made concept that categorizes white skin in a racial hierarchy or cast system above blacks into several categories. The mindset and the society we built around that have, in many ways, dehumanized people with white skin. White people have become this actual entity, but the humanity underneath it is missing.

Insider/Outsider Mindset

It is the idea of beginning to get folks who maybe have had Insider or Social privilege experiences not to feel guilty about diversity and inclusions but to feel responsible, curious, and aware and to be accountable for their curiosity and awareness in practice. This suggests the idea that every organization has a culture. Insiders often need to be made aware of their group status.

We always expect these insider people to find themselves in our organizations. There is always a huge opportunity to grow and go deeper and learn more about yourself. We have to be able to step out of centeredness, out of that comfort, and look for something more profound. Part of that is us supporting, and challenging each other to do it, working in partnership with others so that we are held accountable to do that, and growing together, whatever your inside group is.

About Noah Prince

Noah Prince is a 45-year-old white-skinned cisgender and a universal citizen. His parents are first-generation Americans who believed in peace, justice, and a global community. He brings coaching services and facilitation services to different organizations in the public and private sectors.

Noah is a highly sought Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion facilitator and consultant specializing in supporting "insiders" in different organizations to think about culture and take steps towards being allies and champions for inclusion. He helps leaders shift privilege into equity and supports organizations to grow inclusive cultures that bring a sense of place to their people.

Episode 153: Understanding Personalities; How Does Your Child Perceive the World

Episode 153: Understanding Personalities; How Does Your Child Perceive the World

SHOW NOTES:

In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about Understanding Personalities; How Does Your Child Perceive the World.

In the last two episodes, I talked about how I like to view and help people understand personalities in the context of Myers Briggs. We began with the conversation of introversion versus extroversion. If you haven't listened to those episodes, head over to the Black Mind Garden podcast and subscribe to catch up.

Today, we will be discussing the second dichotomy, which is the sensor versus the intuitive. We want to understand our children's personalities in the context of our own personalities, as this helps us communicate better with them and move forward in a way that works for everyone.

The sensor versus intuitive dichotomy is about how we perceive the world. Sensors perceive the world through touch, feeling, and outward interaction, while intuitives are more imaginative and perceive the world from the inside out. I identify as intuitive and don't need a lot of feedback, while my son is a kinesthetic person who needs to feel and touch things to perceive the world.

Remember, these polarities of personality are a spectrum, and our kids can be on one end of the spectrum or the other end of the spectrum, and everywhere in between. Next week, we will be discussing the thinker versus the feeler dichotomy.

If your child is old enough, you can have them take a test that takes about 20 minutes to determine which side they are on. However, if you are just observing, generally speaking, if they complete the task in their own way and not how you specifically said to do it, it may be that they're on the intuitive side.

Intuitive children may sometimes get mislabeled as oppositional to guidance, so it's important to understand that they are just finding a better way to do it.

We need to observe our children, listen to them, and pay attention to the way they process information and interact with the world.

Behaviors do not come out of the blue and that there is always something underneath. As parents, it's important to understand where on the spectrum our children are and to interact with them in a more trauma-responsive and trauma-informed way.

Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 30 minutes! Follow and Share these pearls with others.

Episode 152: Recognizing & Addressing Trauma in the Workplace w/ Dr. Melissa Hankins

SHOW NOTES

In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by a coach, a speaker, and a physician. We are discussing recognizing and addressing trauma in the workplace.

· How do we deal with trauma in the workplace?

· How can we begin to recognize trauma responses in ourselves?

· How do we tap into our emotions?

These and many more await you in this week's special episode with Dr. Melissa Hankins, a mindset and executive coach for physicians for high performers. In this episode, she will share how to use tapping techniques. Today we will learn about dealing with traumas as children and adults.

The big key and the small key traumas

When people hear the word trauma, there is this automatic association with a concussion and a doubt that we call the big key traumas. There are also the little key traumas and significant emotional events we can have over time. Often these happen in our childhood, creating a blueprint for how we show up in our adult lives.

Trauma as children and as adults

Something life-threatening for a child may not feel life-threatening for an adult. As adults, we have more resources. We can do things, get out of a situation, and speak up. But children do not have the ability, so they rely on their parents and caregivers to create that sense of safety, love, and belonging. Things can also happen where we were being told as children, "No, that is not allowed" that gets internalized as children that as adults, we might become people pleasing or difficulty setting our boundaries.

Recognizing trauma

We may not have the language for it, but if we need to tune into our bodies, we get to communicate. Our bodies are constantly sharing with us, and it is just a matter of us listening to the messages we are getting. There is still such shame built into not knowing exactly what to say or what it is. When we are speaking with others, we can be more trauma-informed.

Trauma can show up in all of us, and it doesn't have to be as egregious or violent or evident as some violent act. Many people think that when we talk about trauma, it is the big stuff. The trauma we do not always look at is minor, repetitive, and ongoing. When we can self-regulate, it allows us to listen more compassionately in a more concussion-informed way and speak in a more trauma-informed or trauma-responsive way with the people we are interacting with.
